About the Alpine S-W10D4

Great bass in less space

To create great bass, you need the best in materials and engineering. Alpine's S-Series subwoofers apply technology from their higher end subs to bring you the depth and punch that'll make your tunes come alive. And to make things even better, these subs are about an inch shallower than their predecessors, making them great candidates for locations where regular high-power subs won't fit.

Advanced materials

The S-W10D4 10" sub can handle up to 600 watts RMS, so you can drive it hard without any worries. The tough Kevlar® treated cone stays rigid under pressure, while its rubber High Amplitude Multi-Roll (HAMR) surround enables maximum excursion for impressive performance. Its dual 4-ohm voice coils allow for extra wiring flexibility, which helps if you plan on adding another subwoofer down the line. Also, it rocks in both sealed and ported boxes, so you can choose an enclosure that suits your tastes.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 450 and 900 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Punchy, clean, and strong! This is my second one of these because the 1st one went with my last car when sold. I liked it enough to buy it again without much thought. I love that it can be ran at 2 or 4 ohms and doesn't require a large enclosure, 1/2 cu.ft. is plenty for it to rock a quad cab truck. I'm running it from a JL 700/5 Marine amp at a 2 ohm load and it handles it respectably.

Pros: 2 or 4 ohm, small enclosure requirement.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Subwoofer problem or?

Since I was a young boy beginning to install stereos in my old beat up truck I have wanted to use Alpine products. It's not until I am now in my 40s that I was in a financial situation in order to do so. My entire system is built around the Alpine line and I have been very happy with the performance of the amps and speakers. My only complaint is that I did just buy this sub and within 2 days I smoked a voice coil. I'm not sure if it is a problem with improper wiring on my end or if it had something to do with the subwoofer itself. That is my my rating is only a 3-star. Once I figure out the true issue and determine how it happened I could adjust my rating accordingly. what I will say is that the customer service representative was awesome and sent me a replacement immediately. I love Crutchfield!

Excellent value. Needed a shorter sub for an under seat downfire application but didn't want to use a shallow mount. This sub was originally placed in a prefab sealed box .6 cubic feet with a 1.5" from from floor baffle that snuff the sun out badly. Custom built a 1.3 cubic foot slot port box tuned to 32hz and increased floor clearance to 2.25" and it literally sounds like I added another sub. Very pleased w this subwoofer

Pros: Mounting depth, power handling, sql

Cons: Don't use a sealed box

Pleasantly surprised! Am replacing a Type-R with this new S-Series, due to space in a new vehicle. Needed a smaller depth, and the S was perfect. I did not think this would hit as hard as the Type-R but it is awefully close!

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine S-Series subwoofer uses a parabolic cone structure, with a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone and a Poly-Mica-Talc dust cap. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone material. The oversized, inverted dust cap increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS) that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve extended pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 4Ω voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2Ω load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2Ω load) or series (for an 8Ω load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Alpine recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume between 0.45 and 0.9 cubic feet, with an ideal volume of 0.58 cubic feet. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 0.8 cubic feet to 1.35 cubic feet, with the ideal size being 1.13 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 10" (W) x 1" (H) x 17" (L).

Q
what is one amplifier that can handle 3 of Alpine S-W10D4?
[ Neil  Feb 13, 2019 ]

A
Hi Neil, Delayed response, sorry about that. I did a lot of research, but am not an expert, so take this with a grain of salt. I wanted subs for my Sierra truck without compromising the rear seating. I found a custom box that fits perfectly under my rear seat, but because of the lack of space, I had to find subs that would complement my box. These Alpines were PERFECT. As for the power plant, I was given an amp for christmas. So Although the amp works great, Crutchfield does not sell that particular amp. I got lucky. If you are buying the amp from Crutchfield, you should contact them. Their support is impeccable. You have to consider so many things to build the correct solution. Box air space is key. Do you already have a box? Any way, back to your question, I dont know what you should go with, but sticking with the same manufacturer is never a bad thing. And let me say this.... These speakers are clear and hit hard. If your into long deep rock your head hip hop bass, you might want to look at kicker, but if you like the bass to be clear and responsive, these are the right ones to get! Good luck Neil!

I am currently running 2 of the s-w10d4's and I'm running them on a Memphis 1000d which runs them hard at a 1 ohm load... This amp is capable of running a 1, 2, and 4 ohm load depending on how you have your subs wired.
