Bring on the power

The SWR-8D4 can handle up to 350 watts RMS, so be sure to choose a suitable amplifier as these subs definitely want lots of juice. Its dual oversized 4-ohm voice coils offer the wiring flexibility you'll appreciate as your system changes and grows, ensuring that you can always pull maximum power from your amp. It works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 260 and 525 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

These things rock.

Pros: Quality subwoofers.

Cons: None

William from Virginia on 10/27/2016

I've had many subs years. Never top end, just value based. 10s, 12s, 15s etc. I.picked up two of these Alpine type R 8s, thought one day I'd find a use for them. I wanted bass in my trunk, but didn't want something gaudy or huge. I built the box sealed, maybe 1.5 cu.ft. subtracting sub space. Absolutely blown away. No way a pair of 8s sound this good. Highly recommended. Wish I could add a pic.

Pros: Big sound in small package

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely the best 8" speakers I have ever heard. I swapped 2 12" kickers for these and I am blown away. The sound quality is second to non. I hear better bass, and get such a better response a lower volumes than I did with the kickers. I can listen to music and hear it as it was Intended rather than just boom boom boom... I wish I would have found these sooner. They will not move the air around at sub 35 hrtz lime 12s will, but the sound quality more than make up for that. I placed them in a ported labrynth box running 600 watts to them. I love them.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of use, look nice

Cons: None

Small for Big Sound

Cartunes Unlimited from Texas on 7/14/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little subwoofer packs a BIG punch. I built the smallest enclosure possible for the speaker and it works great. People can't believe it's an eight inch woofer, they think it's a twelve.

Pros: Small enclosure!

Alpine 8" Type R sub

DBooya from Vancouver Island, BC on 8/31/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm guessing these haven't broken in yet as they don't give the sound I was expecting for a top quality sub, as far as Alpine sells it. Mind you, I'm running these along with a pair SWS15D4. The 15s make sound like the 8s are along for the ride, even though I've got them crossed to play different ranges. Overall, not bad, but can't say that any extra cash for Type R is money well spent.

Pros: Easy install, cast basket

Cons: FInish shows evidence of 'assembly line' finish quality.

Product Research

Enclosure Compatibility

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a two-piece structural parabolic Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted poly-mica dust cap, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of Santoprene, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive Conex spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (40mm), high-temperature, 4-layer dual voice coils offer increased power handling to 350W RMS / 1000W Peak.

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8-ohm load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or single banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box volume ranges from 0.2 cubic feet to 0.55 cubic feet, with 0.3 cubic feet being the ideal size.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 0.3 cubic feet to 0.75 cubic feet. The ideal size is 0.7 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 7" (W) x 3/4" (H) x 15-1/2" (L).

awesome! thank you so much for your prompt response :) [ Christian  Mar 05, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yes, running this sub in parallel with the Alpine PDR-V75 will be a perfect match. The power handling numbers on the sub stay the same whether you run each voice coil on its own channel or wire them together. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Mar 05, 2015 ]  Staff
Free air deck, if you can afford it, go with a dual setup. I currently have a dual 8 inch (2 ohms mind you) SWR-8D2 setup in my Caliber SRT4. The performance and acoustics these two little subs deliver is absolutely phenomenal. They sound crisp, clean and have LOTS of BASS to shred your ear drums out with. I would highly recommend these subs and would highly recommend a dual 8 inch setup for truly amazing bass. I plan to add a third 8inch SWR-8D2 into a cubby nook in the back to allow for full storage utilization without sacrificing bass. Hope this helps :) P.S. If you go with the dual setup, make sure to have an amp that can push at least 700 watts out to the subs. [ AARON  Jun 18, 2014 ]
