Powerful sound and expanded connectivity
With over 50 years of experience building premium audio components, Harman Kardon knows great sound. So if you're looking for a receiver with serious stereo power and performance, you've come to the right place. The HK 3490 boasts 120 watts per channel of high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth Harman Kardon power to ensure dynamic, audiophile sound quality with all your music sources. It also features cool extras like satellite radio capability and digital audio inputs for music playback with compatible gear.
Pull in your favorite stations local or satellite
The HK 3490's integrated AM/FM tuner provides 30 presets for quick access to all your favorite stations. And the XM Satellite Radio ready design makes it easy to add over 170 channels of music, news, and entertainment with an optional XM Mini-Tuner and Home Dock.
Flexible connections for your A/V components
This versatile receiver offers plenty of connections for your music sources. You get three sets of inputs for audio components, including one for a turntable so you can enjoy your treasured vinyl collection. Plus, optical and coaxial digital audio inputs are available for making high-quality connections to a digital audio source, such as a CD or DVD player. The '3490 even includes convenient switching for video components an unusual but useful feature for stereo receivers. Four A/V inputs, including one on the front panel, let you connect a game console plus other video sources and use this receiver as the centerpiece of a two-channel home theater system. Two separate subwoofer outputs make it easy to add a powered sub (or even two) for extra bass impact.

At the heart of the '3490 is Harman Kardon's high current, ultra-wide bandwidth amplifier. With clean, consistent and accurate performance, this amp will drive your home speakers to new levels and your enjoyment to new heights.

High-Current (+/- 45 amps) Stereo Amplifier: The built-in amplifier has high-current capability to handle demanding loads. Although the receiver is made to be used with 8 ohm speakers, the amplifier sees a 4 ohm load when two sets of 8 ohm speakers are connected and both speaker outputs are on. The high-current capabilities of the amplifier allow it to simultaneously drive two sets of 8 ohm speakers without difficulty.
Dolby Virtual Speaker (DVS): Dolby Virtual Speaker technology creates a compelling 5.1-channel listening experience from two speakers, useful for locations where space for multiple-speaker setups is limited; choose from two setting options:
- DVS Reference: a small, well-damped room appropriate for both movies and music recordings
- DVS Wide: a larger room, more like a concert hall or movie theatre
Dolby Headphone: Dolby Headphone technology accurately simulates the experience of hearing a 5.1-channel speaker system, and is compatible with conventional headphones. It's ideal for private playback of multi-channel entertainment without disturbing anyone else. Dolby Headphone can be turned off if you prefer.
iPod: The included A/V adapter cable (3.5mm mini-jack to RCA) can be used to connect the audio and video output of many iPod models the the HK3490 (the iPod classic, touch, and iPhone are not compatible with the included cable for video or photo output). An optional Bridge II iPod dock (item number 532BRIDGE2, sold separately) can also be used; it plugs into the proprietary jack on the rear panel and plays audio from your iPod through the HK 3490 (neither video nor still photo playback is possible through the Bridge II). The Bridge II also charges your iPod's battery.
XM Satellite Ready: The optional XM Direct 2 Home Tuner (220XHD2H1, sold separately) lets you enjoy XM Satellite Radio through the XM-ready receiver. Simply connect the XM direct 2 Home Tuner to the XM jack on back of the receiver, place and aim the included antenna for optimum reception, and you are ready to start enjoying commercial-free music, plus live sports, new, talk, and exclusive entertainment.
Note: In addition to the XM Direct 2 Home Tuner and the XM-ready receiver, you will need a subscription to XM Satellite Radio to receive XM programming.
Remote In/Out Jacks: There is one 3.5mm mini-jack remote input and one 3.5mm mini-jack remote output on the rear panel of this unit. If the receiver is placed behind a solid or smoked glass door, the obstruction may prevent the front panel IR sensor from receiving commands from the remote. If the unit is positioned so the front panel IR sensor cannot receive commands from the remote, an optional IR repeater system may be connected to the Remote IR In jack and positioned to accept commands from the remote. The Remote IR Out jack can be connected to the remote input jack of compatible equipment to relay commands to that equipment.
Sleep Timer: You can program the receiver's sleep timer to turn it the unit off after a preset amount of time; choose from 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, or 10 minutes. Once the sleep timer has been engaged, the display will dim to half-intensity and the amount of time remaining will count down.
Remote: The included remote (HK 3490) is preprogrammed to control harman/kardon DVD players, CD players, CD recorders, and the DMC 1000 digital media server.
Display Dimmer: The display brightness can be set to full intensity, half intensity, or off. This feature is activated from the remote only. When the display is dimmed or turned off, the light around the volume knob also turns off.
Speaker Terminals: There are binding post outputs for 2 pair of speakers, labeled Speaker 1 and Speaker 2. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because each post has a plastic collar that prevents use with spade lugs.
Pre-out/Main-in Loop: Factory jumpers connect the main amplifier input to the full range preamp outputs. This offers the flexibility of inserting an equalizer, surround processor (when using multiple amps), or another type of processor between the two stages.
Digital Inputs: There are two digital inputs, one optical and one coaxial.
Subwoofer Preamp Output Jacks: There are two subwoofer preamp output jacks on the rear panel of the receiver. These jacks are provided for connection to powered subwoofers with line-level inputs. Each sub output has a corresponding trigger output and link switch, allowing you to automatically turn a compatible powered subwoofer on/off along with the HK 3490's speaker outputs.
Headphone Jack: There is a full-size (1/4") headphone jack on the front panel. When headphones are plugged in the speaker outputs are automatically muted.
Switched AC Outlets: There are two switched AC outlets on the rear panel; the maximum output is 100 watts each.
- 8 Ohms: 120 watts per channel, 20Hz-20kHz @ 0.07% THD, both channels driven
- 4 Ohms: 150 watts per channel, 20Hz-20kHz @ 0.2% THD, both channels driven
