About the Salamander Designs Synergy Model 402
Simple modern design
Simple modern design
Salamander's Synergy Model 402 features an aluminum frame and select hardwood panels, giving it a simple yet elegant look. It's ideal for a small bedroom or den home theater system. The perforated metal door panel allows IR signals from your remote to pass through, as well as air to ventilate your gear. It also effectively hides the gear behind it.
Stores up to 5 components
The cabinet top can support a TV up to 40” and weighing up to 150 lbs. Inside the cabinet are four adjustable shelves. The shelf supports slide along the aluminum frame, so you can move each shelf to the exact height you want — not just where the next peg holes happen to be. A removable back panel gives you easy access to your gear for wiring.
Good for the environment and the country
Salamander Designs uses only hardwoods harvested from managed forestry programs. Their frames are made from recycled aluminum, with environmentally friendly coatings and stains. And each Model 402 is built in the USA.

Salamander Designs Synergy Model 402 reviews
A really beautiful audio cabinet, furniture grade finish and very sturdy after built.
Pros: looks, the finish, and quality
Cons: a little tricky to assemble and a little pricey.

The Synergy system is the only customizable modular audio rack products on the market. There's a lot of accessories and options, which really stand apart. I also purchased the slide out shelf for my record player. Unfortunately, I was disappointed on several factors when my 402 arrived. This is a beast, extremely heavy, over 100 lbs. MDF is used throughout and it's cheaper to produce I suppose, but it weighs a ton. The instructions were vague, confusing, and outdated. It took me over two days to assemble, think your worst Ikea nightmare x 4. The top panel came damaged, which they replaced within a week. The door comes pre-drilled with hinges that attach directly into those holes to one of the aluminum posts, so assembly error is near impossible. The door ended up being noticeably crooked, and it left a half inch gap on the handle side. Consequently the after market lock from Salamander didn't reach the other post when locked due to the gap. They didn't replace the door unfortunately. Now I'm stuck with a crooked door that won't lock, which was the main reason I went with the Synergy. The sliding shelf works well, and the adjustable feet are great for my uneven floor. Overall I feel like Salamander's intentions here are good, and they've really got a unique vision with the Synergy system. Where they could improve is making the materials lighter (bamboo or wood option), instructions more clear and updated,
Pros: Options Flexibility Accessories
Cons: Unnecessarily Heavy Extremely complicated assembly Confusing instructions Ill-fitting door and innacurare lock template/instructions

Excellent product! Well made. Easy assembly although, the shelf spacing could be made easier with periodic markings placed on the inside of the cabinet. Both Crutchfield and Salamander are impressive companies with outstanding customer service. We called the tech support at both companies and they were both incredible to work with. Both companies resolved our questions and made sure we were 100% satisfied.
Pros: Excellent product and service

The Salamander 402 is well made and attractive (my wife says it looks nice, so that's high praise given he disdain for my audio furniture in general). The basis of the rack is the use of 80/20 extrusions that form the 4 corner pillars. If you're not familiar with it, it's got t-slots on each of its 4 sides - so using t-slot nuts makes attaching things (like the shelf brackets) easy. The tops and bottoms appear to be high density MDF with high quality wood veneer. Sides are ~1/4 inch thick fiber board with (I think) vinyl veneer. Shelves are stout and covered with textured, grippy vinyl (I think) veneer. It all looks very nice. Door is solid wood framed with a perforated metal "grill" and metal hinges. Door dampener is cheap plastic and I didn't use it. So far so good (though I would like to see plywood on the sides with veneer). The negatives are around setup. I'm an engineer and can put anything together. The difficulty here is setting up shelf spacing. Even using a tape measure to set heights is troublesome. It would be a great add to have index marks on the 80/20 pillars to aid in adjusting shelves. Assembly can take 1-2 hours. Think out your spacing carefully - pain to change it once together. I bought, from Salamander, the small 19-inch rack mount ears and the cable management rods for the back (you cannot install the plastic back cover with those in place). For the price, these pieces should have come with it. Overall, highly recommended even at the price.
Pros: Nicely finished, solid, flexible, good capacity.
Cons: Pricey even at Crutchfield's discounted price, some small cheap bits, can't use back with cable management bars in place.

Synergy Series audio cabinet: The Salamander Designs Synergy series SB402 is a audio cabinet with an open top-shelf, four interior adjustable middle shelves, and one interior fixed bottom shelf, to hold your components and even accommodate a TV up to 40". Available in a Black, Cherry, or Walnut finish.
Real Wood & MDF Construction: The Synergy series AV stand's top shelf & bottom base are 1-1/8" thick and consist of real wood veneers or a powder-coated black finish over an MDF core with a real wood lumber edge. The Door is also made of solid hardwood or powder-coated MDF, while the adjustable shelves are made of 0.5" thick MDF. These woods are a select grade of American hardwood and finished for durability and low maintenance.
Note: Wood being a natural product is prone to different grain patterns which can lead to slight variations in color and shade.
Anodized Aluminum Posts: At the heart of the Synergy series audio cabinet are unique square-shaped extruded aluminum support posts. Theses posts are used simultaneously as an external cabinet skeleton for supporting top, bottom, side, and back panels; as well as an internal skeleton for supporting shelves and drawers (sold separately). The audio cabinet is available with black or silver anodized aluminum posts.
Audiophile-Grade: The Salamander Designs Synergy series AV stand is designed with the Audiophile in mind. It is constructed of dissimilar materials which reduce transmission of performance robbing resonance. This will provide ample component isolation to enhance the sound quality of the system.
Solid Wood Door Frame w/ Perforated Steel Insert: The Synergy series AV stand features solid wood or black powder-coated MDF door frame with a perforated steel insert and a soft-close dampener. The perforated door insert permits IR signals to passthrough, adds ventilation, and hides your components. The snap-on hinges fully extend and are removable for better in-cabinet access. The door can be hung so they swing to the left or right.
Open & Enclosed Shelving: The Salamander Designs Synergy series SB402 audio cabinet features a top shelf, two enclosed adjustable shelves, and one enclosed fixed bottom shelf.
- Open Top Shelf: The top shelf measures 23.25" (w) x 41" (h) x 19.75" (d), and will support up to 150 lbs. It can hold an audio component or up to a 40" TV.
- Adjustable Middles Shelves: Behind the hinged door are four adjustable middle shelves. Each shelf measures 19.75" (w) x 18" (d), and can support up to 75 lbs. The four adjustable shelves are infinitely adjustable within the interior compartment, which measures 37.75" (h).
- Fixed Bottom Shelf: The fixed bottom shelf is also located behind the hinged door. It measures 19.75" (w) x 18" (d), and can support up to 75 lbs.
Removable Back Panel: The removable back panel permits fast, easy access to components and wiring. Wires can be easily hidden with the use of the rear panel by allowing cables to pass over and under them. There is approximately 1" of space between each shelf and the back panel, permitting wires and cables to pass-through.
Leveling Feet: The Salamander Designs Synergy series SB402 is fitted with heavy-duty, non-marking, leveling feet.
Optional Accessories: Optional accessories enhance functionality and add greater design flexibility. Choose from Casters, Adjustable Shelves, Pull-Out Shelves, Universal Storage Trays, Media Trays, and/or Accent Lightning (all sold separately).
Built-In The USA + Lifetime Warranty: All of the Salamander Designs Synergy series cabinets are hand-built in the USA and come with a limited lifetime warranty.
