About the PAC RP4-FD11 Wiring Interface

PAC RP4-FD11

PAC's RP4-FD11 radio replacement interface lets you replace the factory radio in select 2005-up Ford, Lincoln, Mazda, and Mercury vehicles. You'll still retain your factory steering wheel audio controls, rear seat entertainment (RSE) system, retained accessory power (RAP), and the use of your Ford factory amplifier, if present.

The RP4-FD11 interface eliminates the need for the steering wheel audio control adapter that's usually required for a Ford-built vehicle, saving you some more cash. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: You'll lose your fader control if you have an amplified system in your vehicle. The RP4-FD11 adapter does not work with your SYNC system; you'll need PAC's MS-FRD1 adapter to maintain that functionality. See Details for a list of compatible car stereos.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this model is compatible with your vehicle.

This product works as advertised. Just verify what harness you have because the instructions shipped with mine did not match the harness in the box. Go here and verify the colors in the harness with the two instruction sheets. https://catalog.pac-audio.com/catalog/radio-replacement/rp4-fd11 What is interesting with mine, was that the harness was labeled V3, but needed the V2 instruction sheet.

This product is necessary for the install, and it works great! i had to call PAC to get tech support though, because wires were different colors and it turns out the part was new but had old instructions.

Pros: Acessory, brake, and reverse wires are all in the harness, makes install much easier.

Cons: Not all steering wheel controls can be used unless hard wired. Didnt like this.

This went together a lot easier than I thought it would. Never having use one before I was a little skeptical & wondering what I got myself into when I opened the box. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I used heat shrink butt connectors to splice the harness into the deck harness, adjusted the settings on the module as per the instructions and guess what? Everything works exactly as it's supposed to.

Instructions were vague at times. I had to contact Crutchfield for assistance based on one wire seemingly needing to be installed, but turned out, needed to be left unattached.

Pros: The pro was that Crutchfield tech assistance was able to help me where the instructions couldn't.

Cons: Even though the switch had to be set for my radio (Sony), it didn't work when I installed it. I had to unassemble the dash again to reset it.

No Luck.

Ryan from Columbus, OH on 10/29/2018

2009 Lincoln MKZ

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The instructions sucked. I'm a pretty tech savy kind of guy and have installed my own stereo, amp, and subs quite a few times. This is my first time needing an adapter. I connected everything as described, as best as I could. Set the switch to the correct number Never got it to work. Powers on, but steering wheel controls do nothing. I have a 2009 Lincoln MKZ (Non-THX) and I've heard claims this adapter should work... So unless you have dealt with these adapters before, I would not try and install on your own. Rather disappointing... but I rarely used my SW controls anyway... I am giving this a 3-Star rating because I am sure the device works well if the installation situation is ideal and don't want to give it a 1-Star rating simply because I failed to get it to work.

Pros: good in theory

Cons: instructions sucked. Not easy to install.

PAC RP4-FD11 Wiring Interface

Crutchfield customer from Bellevue, NE on 9/11/2018

2012 Ford F-150 XLT

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought this after having returned a different PAC interface and harness from a local store that I learned wouldn't work with my vehicle. It was recommended by a Crutchfield advisor for simplicity and ease of installation. There is no setup or programming required (unless you want to customize the result(s) of using the steering wheel controls or assign a 2nd function using a long-press action on a given button on the steering wheel. I wasn't concerned with customizing so all I had to do was turn the dial to the number which corresponded to the manufacturer of my aftermarket radio (Pioneer AVH-201EX). I also read that some people took off points because supposedly sometimes the volume buttons acted in reverse of the intent... i.e. somebody used their steering wheel button to increase volumne but instead the volume decreased; or I'll try to increase volume and it skips to the next track or next radio preset. Mine does that but I do not believe its this PAC interface -- I believe the actual Ford steering wheel buttons are overly sensitive or maybe dirty behind the trim or something because the same thing happened with the factory radio when it was working. Be aware: although a Crutchfield advisor informed me... I could not find a current install guide anywhere on the site or from searching Google to confirm -- but in the manual has outdated information for the wire leads. Acutal wiring is: Green > Parking Brake Purple/White > Reverse Trigger Pink > Spe

Pros: Has the reverse trigger lead and parking break lead for the after market radio harness to connect to so you don't have to get creative to implement the reverse trigger to use a backup camera and you don't have to hassle with splicing into your parking brake sensor wire or buying the bypass (for Pioneer radios).

Cons: Crutchfield needs to provide the updated install guide/diagram to customers who purchase this.

Crutchfield response on 10/1/2018
Thanks to this customer's review, our tech support crew contacted PAC, and they received the updated the online manual to reflect the correct diagram.

Can only give it a 3 as i didn't integrate to everything I thought it would. Replace OEM AM/FM/CD/Satellite Nav system on 2009 F250. Hated the small buttons on that radio, Navigation was out of date, and wanted ApplePlay. Didn't have a connection for the factory backup camera so I had to splice a RCA connector to the wires of the connector that had no place to go. White/Green stripe wire positive, Brown negative. Also didn't have an adapter to connect to the Satellite antenta, so had to route a new antenna. It's also a lot of wires to stuff into a small place.

Pros: Works great for the connectors is has

Cons: Doesn't have all the connections required

I was completely blown away how well this thing integrates my '09 Ford Escape Factory functions to the Kenwood 893S double din head unit. I am listening to the double din head unit through the factory speakers and factory subwoofer and it sounds amazing. Icing on the cake is that the steering wheel controls are also retained! I highly recommend this product. I was also impressed because for those who don't read instructions, they put a piece of tape over an input where you must take configure the unit to the appropriate setting before using.

It works on the 2nd try! Crutchfield shipped a RP4 converter (the blue computer converter). The 1st one wouldn't let power through. Hopefully it doesn't go bad down the road. Also, only half the steering wheel controls work. Volume up/down and next track/previous track work. Voice and phone buttons do not work from existing steering wheel controls.

I used this to install a Sony XAV-AX100 in my 2011 Ford F-250. Bottom line it works but it required a lot more work than it should. Had to call tech support to get some help, and they were great. For reasons I still don't understand plugging the speaker cables into the Sony didn't produce any sound. I had to solder the separate speaker wires into the corresponding wires on the Sony. Subwoofer sounded awful so I just disabled it. Steering wheels control work, sort of. Volume, skip forward, backward, okay. Voice, OK, no. In the end, no big deal but it took me a lot longer to figure it all out than it should.

2011 Ford F-150 XLT

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installed on a 2011 F150 with Sync. At first I almost threw this away because I couldn't get the steering wheel controls (SWC) to work with the JVC radio, but then I realized where I went wrong. I had connected the black plug in into the AUX connection on the radio and also crimped the blue/yellow wire from the radio to the PAC device, thus interfering with the signal. I unplugged the black plug from the AUX connection and IT WORKS. I have only tested during installation so only time will tell if the connection holds up (I do not think it will fail). Even though I've installed a few radios in multiple cars, the included instructions were somewhat difficult to understand for those who aren't tech savvy. Overall, seems to be a great product to keep the SWC function which I constantly use during traffic. I would suggest to a friend and will buy again in the future.

Pros: Works as advertised. Plug and play. Simple install.

Cons: Instructions are difficult to understand/read.

Cons: Scans the radio instead of flipping through presets. I opted not to cut any of the steering wheel wires for the voice override.

Doesn't work correctly on 2012 Ford F250

2012 Ford F-250

I really hate to give bad ratings, esp at Crutchfield. But I feel this is important. This wiring interface simply did NOT work correctly on my 2012 Ford F250. I followed the steps to the T, and I ended up with a radio that was constantly on. I had to manually shut the radio off, and even then it would kill my battery if it was left on overnight. But possibly the worst part is that, it would tell the truck something was left on.. so ANYTIME you opened the drivers door, it would just ding constantly. I called Crutchfield support, which was amazing, and they gave me a few things to try. I did, and they deemed the unit bad, so shipped me a new one. I spent another hour+ installing the new one only to have the exact same issue. I ended up taking matters into my own hands and CUT the yellow 12v power going to "the box" (which was the trouble maker) and just used a multi meter to find my own switched 12v power wire and tapped "the box" power wire into that. Solved my problem, now everything works great, no more dinging, and no more dead battery. However, its insane to have to pay that kind of money only to have to hack it to work correctly. Perhaps the firmware needed to be updated, but there is no consumer way to do this. I think if a company is going to have something with flashable firmware, they should include a cable, or at least make the interface a standard miniUSB or something. So in short.. Crutchfield gets 5 stars as usual.. but not this product

Pros: Once hacked into, it does work correctly and mapped my steering wheel controls correctly.

Cons: Unit would stay on regardless of key position, creating constant dinging from my truck, and several dead batteries.

I had no trouble wiring my car stereo right the first time, but I am very technical. I read all instructions and plan before I install. I used male bullet connectors from a local auto parts store to connect power antenna and power amplifier remote connectors on my Clarion stereo.

This adapter kit was top notch for my 2008 Mustang and now works well, Except that it was missing the pigtail wire and pin to hookup to the Run/Accessory Power. I had to jimmy-rig a new wire so that the radio would turn on/off with the ignition key like it should. That was an hour spent researching and fixing. Other than that, I would have given it 5 stars. The instructions were adequate. Be prepared to practice your wiring skills as you will be required to match up and manually connect the blues, greens, etc. In the end, it works great. I initially tried buying another stereo elsewhere but it became a headache trying to figure out the correct adapter wiring kit and brackets. Go with Crutchfield and feel ensured it's all going to fit.

Pros: Fairly simple to install. Worked great in the end

Cons: Missing a pigwire wire and pin. Instructions were more complicated than they needed to be. Could be better tailored for Steering wheel and non-Steering wheel controlled cars.

This device works about 9 times out of 10 when I press the steering wheel controls on my 2011 Ford Escape. I don't know if that's a limitation of the device, the steering wheel controls, or the head unit I purchased. I'm happy it was pre-programmed. The instructions are kind of a mess, I had to call Crutchfield more than once but they saved the day as always.

Pros: pre-programmed Crutchfield Support was great works most of the time

Cons: does not work all of the time terrible instructions

PAC RP4-FD11 Wiring Interface

Loyal Customer from Oregon on 1/8/2015

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought a Pioneer DEH-X8700BH stereo and this PAC RP4-FD11 Wiring Interface to retail the steering wheel controls for my system. In the years as a Crutchfield customer I've never had any issues with any product I've bought from them. But I guess it was just meant to happen, with this product.

Pros: I've never had the need to use this type of product in the past but I guess it would've been great had it worked. I took my stereo to a professional and have it installed. The guy installing this PAC wiring interface said he's used this product and has always had good things to say about it.

Cons: The issue we ran into was that this PAC unit would not program to my specific steering wheel audio controls, not matter how many times we tried over and over and over again. Again, the guy installing this product said that it was weird that he couldn't get it to work because he's never had issues with it before. So I guess I happen to purchase the one faulty PAC wiring interface. Other than that, I'll take the professional's word on this being a great product.

Instructions are fairly clear, except for the "Blue" wire which states that it only needs hooked up if you have a powered antenna. This should say an antenna with a powered amplifier. This would avoid all confusion. If you are not sure, hook it up anyway. That is my suggestion, not Crutchfield's. I did not hook it up and ended up taking the dash apart twice.

Pros: Works great

Cons: Instructions could use improvement

Crutchfield response on 11/18/2014
This reviewer makes a good point. PAC's wording regarding the blue wire is a bit dated. We forwarded this review to PAC with a suggestion that they reword the wiring instructions. Also, even if things are going according to plan, it's never a bad idea to call our Tech Support team when you're prepping for an installation. We can always confirm and clarify what's needed. Crutchfield Tech Support is free with every purchase and for the life of the product.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Purchased this to upgrade my 09 Ford Flex without sync and navigation. This as very helpful in the wire connection for my Pioneer DEH-6600BS. Had no problem with wiring, but to keep the steering wheel controls you'll have go pay close attention to programming the item before closing up anything. I made that mistake so I had to pull apart everything and program my SWC before finishing up. Other than that the product worked as suppose to be. No major problems. Just need to pay close attention to the wiring diagram.

Pros: Easier hook up than splicing wires

Cons: take a while to handle the bunch of wires, its a bit bulky, but still able to tuck away for the finish

easy to wire/instal. Basic (original) steering wheel functions work, but I can not figure out how to modify them for double function. Called tech support and got sort of an explanation (!). still there's no way ... frustrating!

Pros: basic/original functions work

Cons: instruction very confusing/over complicated

Crutchfield response on 8/6/2014
Installing and programming a steering wheel control interface can indeed be a challenge. To add the double function capability (long press/short press), you have to manually program the interface. Our Tech Support team reached out to the customer to let him know that we'll be standing by if he wants to do that. They'll be glad to walk him through the process over the phone. SWC adapter PAC RP4-FD11

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used this to connect a Sony MEX N5000BT to a base model 2010 Mercury Milan. It works as advertised. Hookup was no problem for this ex-Air Force radio electronics technician. My main complaint with this adapter is that it is overkill and overpriced. It included wiring to connect to a lot of other things besides my steering wheel controls. I think Crutchfield is now offering some cheaper and more realistic adapters now and that is a good thing.

Pros: Does what it is supposed to do.

Cons: Overpriced. Includes a gaggle of unneeded wires for systems with rear seat controls (which mine doesn't have).

It was easy to hookup and my steering wheel controls work exactly as they should. I used it in a 2007 Ford Fusion with 6 speakers. A couple of the descriptions of the wires didn't match up exactly but you can figure I out, based on their functions. The wires were long enough for the hookups, but a little more length on them would have made stuffing the unit in the dashboard a little easier. It also gives you the ability to program different functions into your steering wheel buttons, but I have not true That yet. Overall, it is a very good product. I would not have installed an aftermarket radio without it.

Pros: Easy to use, keeps steering wheel controls

Cons: Wires could be a little longer

This adapter was perfect for my installation of the new Kenwood head unit. I was concerned that its bulk would not fit in the dash cavity behind the new audio unit, but there was absolutely no problem!

Pros: Ease of "plug-and play" installation.

Cons: Directions were somewhat vague in regards to the adaptation of the steering wheel controls. We had to abandon using them as a result. Otherwise, a five star rating would have been easily earned.

It works ok, but as mentioned in other reviews for this unit in a Ford Fusion the stock console will only show DVD not the clock. Also each steering wheel control press registers on the console and stays there until another steering wheel control is pressed or the car is shut off. I think it should blank out the last command after some 5 or 10 seconds. I talked to PAC and they cannot fix this with a firmware update.

Pros: steering wheel controls are retained

Cons: The output to the stock console should be better.

This adapter works as designed and my steering wheel controls properly operate my aftermarket stereo. There is an annoying side effect on my 2010 Ford Fusion. Cons: My Ford Fusion SE screen no longer shows the clock.

Double-press doesn't work on 2012 Focus

Chris A. from Alexandria, VA on 9/19/2013

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Programming this guy in a 2012 Ford Focus (without Sync) gave me a headache, but eventually I figured it out. The real trouble was that apparently the double-press functionality for the SWC that they say you can program in simply didn't work. After resetting to default, I was able to alter the single-press, and change my "source" button to a "phone" function that gave me hands-free calling with a JVC AV61BT. Other than the initial fuss, couldn't be happier with the result. Would be nice if the wiring was a bit longer to allow the programming unit to hang further in your dash so it was accessible by popping the armrest assembly vice taking out the head-unit bezel.

Pros: Gives a lot of flexibility for steering wheel control

Cons: Double-press functionality doesn't work on all models.

More details on the PAC RP4-FD11 Wiring Interface

Product Research

Features

Radio Replacement Interface: The RadioPro4 (RP4-FD11) is a radio replacement and SWC (steering wheel control) interface that comes pre-loaded with amplifier retention and SWC software, navigation based output signals, and firmware that retains many of the vehicle's original safety and convenience features when replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket head unit.

Functionality: The RP4-FD11 interface allows the replacement of a factory radio in select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles with the CAN-bus system. Using this interface will retain factory features such as steering wheel controls (SWC), rear seat entertainment (RSE), rear seat control (RSC) and, the factory audio amplifier whenever the original radio is removed. The RP4-FD11 also provides data bus driven outputs such as retained accessory power (RAP), vehicle speed sensor (VSS), illumination, reverse trigger, and parking brake.

Note: If the vehicle is equipped with the Sony factory stereo system, adjust the fader to your preferred front/rear setting before the factory radio is removed. Neither the aftermarket radio nor the RP4-FD11 interface has the ability to adjust the factory amplifier's fader. The RadioPro4 (RP4-FD11) does not retain your vehicle's factory SYNC system. SYNC retention requires the PAC MS-FRD1 radio replacement interface (541MSFRD1, sold separately).

Vehicle Compatibility: The RadioPro4 (RP4-FD11) is compatible with select 2005-up Ford, Lincoln, Mercury vehicles with MSCAN databus radios. Compatible vehicles as of 7/13/2012 include:

I have a 2007 Explorer with a factory DVD player for the rear seats. Will it still work if I use the RP4-FD11 harness?
[ Jacob  Mar 04, 2019 ]

Q
Will this Harness and Interface retain the AUX and USB port that come factory in the center console. I'm assuming they were made for the SYNC system but i would like to keep function of those two ports in a 2012 Ford Fusion?

I have a 2011 f150 with the same sync system with those 2 ports. They still have power but don't connect to the stereo. So the USB can still be used to charge devices. If you buy a stereo that will retain the sync then they should still work for that. I did not because I didn't like sync anyways
[ F  Feb 09, 2019 ]
A
Yes I still have them in my 2012 f-150

A
On my 2012 F150 I was able to keep the aux jack, but the usb has not worked. You will not use sync, but you can use voice control like you would with sync. All the other controls work.

I want to be able to use hands free devices, however I have never been able to use this feature in my 2011 Ford Escape. Is there a wire I need to connect to be able to allow this feature?
[ Anna  Jul 09, 2018 ]

Unfortunately this unit is supposed to work with some of your hands free devices. I have a 2007 Ford Expedition I installed in with a Clarion radio and GPS and I'm only able to use the volume control, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It will tell you what you might use it for there is a setting on the box make sure you switch it to what you need. Good luck, call Cruutchfields there techs are great..

Yes you will! Prior to installing my system I call Crutchfield for technical support and they identified each wire and where to connect in on my 2008 Ford Expedition.

I've connected everything to my aftermarket radio harness and plugged in to the radio, but have no display/light on the radio. It's receiving/ejecting cds just fine. Am I missing a wire (that might need to be hardwired to the vehicle)?

From the radio is there an orange colored wire not connected? Typically that's the dimmer connection and not every vehicle connects to it...

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
i have a 2008 Escape XLT, which does not have SWC (just cruise control) or a factory amp. is this item overkill or can i just buy a wiring harness? it's been a while since i've installed a car stereo, but i've never had to use one of the blue things before. usually a $10 wire harness covers it. Thanks.

Yes, this is not necessary for your application.
[ JOHN W  Nov 26, 2014 ]

David, I don't now why you would want this PAC RP4-FD11 interface? This is basically for SWC (steering wheel control) and it worked great for me! I didn't spend $149 on it either!!! I just bought PAC RP4-FD11 05-Up Ford/Linc/Merc interface/SWI Item #: 541RP4FD11 for my Daughter's 2006 Milan and it worked GREAT with the JVC KWR500 CD Receiver. You do have to pair them up at the end BEFORE you push everything back into the dash! I would THINK just the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Kit Late Models, DD or the Ford wire Harness for Ford/Linc/Merc/Hyun 03-up woukld be all you need plus the Chrysler/GM/Ford Antenna Adapt Motorola M to OEM antenna F hook-up. I used to install radios in cars back in the 70's, Boy, times have changes with easier hook-ups with cable plugs! Whew,,,,,,,, my neck would be sore back under those dashes! lol. I had no problems but YOUR hook-up should be easier with out SWC and NO amp! Good Luck and use your cell phone to call their Install Support Team, I am sure they will help you out if you get stuck?
[ TOM  Nov 24, 2014 ]
A
This is just if you have steering wheel switches to turn up volume, source, or change channels. If you do not have those on steering wheel you don't need this item. I have a 2010 Edge with steering wheel controls and had to have this to operate radio from the steering wheel.
[ CHAD  Nov 24, 2014 ]
A
You only need it if you have steering wheel controls and want to use them for the aftermarket stereo. I have the steering wheel control for the stereo but decided not to use this, since i could just as easily reach the stereo. Your cruise control will still work without it, so you will have no use for this.
[ JAMES  Nov 24, 2014 ]
A
I purchased this to retain the steering wheel controls, factory amp, and factory auxilary imput. Without needing those, i dont see any reason why you would need this interface. The regular wiring harness should suffice.
[ Jason  Nov 24, 2014 ]
Q
Hey I have a question for all using the product. If you were to do this after it was plugged in are you able to unplug the interface and do the process again? I'm not getting anything out of my SWC at all. ** Radio Select Switch: The radio select rotary switch on the side of the interface must be adjusted to the proper radio setting before plugging the interface into the vehicle.**

Presenting the interface is mandatory for the head unit to work. Read the instruction provided with the interface to correctly set your radio up.

My understanding is the head unit controls what is displayed, this just allows you to use the steering wheel controls to work with the aftermarket head unit/ stereo.

Q
Hi ... did you install the PAC RP4-FD11 in a 2010 Ford Fusion? I recently installed mine that I got from CrutchField. It works well and all SWC functions are fine. What I have question about is if your LED screen (my car is SE model) shows the clock anymore? I lost the clock display functionality, plus it always shows "DVD" in upper corner. Just wondering if this is typical behavior with other people. Thanks.
[ Eric  Jan 16, 2014 ]

A
Actually I ended up returning mine. In the end I could not justify the money and the cuts to the wireing harness for the stearing wheel controls. I can reach the stereo as easily as I can reach the steering wheel controls. I would not expect that to be normal behavior, since my understanding was that this would make your steering wheel controls work like a remote. Not that it would come in as a seperate line-in. This might be worth asking Crutchfield or anyone else running your stereo. On a side note, did you make the same mistake on the wiring so that your stereo does not dim with the interior lights? Ford uses a different wire than the harness shows. I need to go back in and make the change, but waiting until a nice warm day and that I feel up for it. Good Luck

I was sent this question, but I'm sorry I can't offer any assistance. Mine was in an explorer that didn't have the screen. Put in your car, go to stereos, and click in the top bar. It has "important info" about you particular car. Should describe if that screen will or will not work with an aftermarket radio

I did have my head unit installed by a local shop this time. My 2012 Escape Limited has the LED screen on the upper center dash as well. Mine shows temperatures, outside temperature, direction and it reads "Audio" and in upper left it reads "DVD"

I have a 2007 ford explorer, have no problem......maybe wiring?
[ ERIC  Jan 17, 2014 ]
A
I did some research prior to the install and found that some features stop working intermittently and that the clock feature from the screen does not work. I decided to not use install it because of the integration it requires. Since then I have sold the fusion and bought a new vehicle. Sorry I could be of more help with your issue. You could always try contacting a reputable car audio store. They should be able to help you without any fees.
