Meh. Wouldn't splurge on this again

Crutchfield customer from Bloomington, IN on 9/15/2021

2014 Toyota Sienna

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bought this thinking that it should make it easier then the old-style wiring harnesses and an additional steering wheel control. Thankfully I had a ton of room behind the new head unit, because this has a lot of extra connectors. Also, I don't like how the audio goes through this unit. If it goes bad, I'd be out sound completely, vs just out steering wheel controls.

Pretty much plug and play. Just connect the wiring per Crutchfield guides and plug everything in. I didn't have to reprogram any settings, steering wheel, USB, even reverse camera worked with the adapter. I recommend laying everything out and confirming connections before finalizing.

Pros: Easy connections Retains everything factory, with some other adapters Did not need to reprogram

Cons: Lots of wires that can become a nest if not managed

Perfect for Tacoma

Crutchfield customer from Middlesboro, KY on 7/31/2021

2007 Toyota Tacoma

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Worked perfect for my Tacoma. Directions are pretty mean but straight forward. Was pretty simple to install (match wires, plug and play, etc.) using common sense and the directions though. I did have to reprogram it once as it lost the swc controls as I was hooking/unhooking my aftermarket stereo and fitting it in but even that was simple. Happy with the purchase so far. Everything works as it should and as described for the time being.

Pros: Simple, works as it should.

Beware of possible electrical problems

Alexandra from CALIFORNIA, MD on 7/24/2021

2013 Toyota Highlander

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used this as a recommendation by Crutchfield when I installed the Boss Elite BE10ACP radio into my 2013 Toyota Highlander. My car's check engine light came on after installing the radio. The scan showed a problem with the Vehicle Speed Sensor. I took my car to the shop and $500 later, they could NOT figure out what is causing the engine light to come on because they even changed the VSS sensor and still did not fix the light. Something electrical got tripped when I installed the radio with this harness. I taped the unused wires in the harness so they come in contact with anything that can cause a short circuit, and it's a plug-n-play harness, so nothing may have caused it unless a wire is not lined up correctly. I may have to install the old radio and clear the error code to see if the problem comes back on. I used a Metra harness on my daughter's car and it worked perfectly fine. I've used Metra harness in my old car before as well with no issues. This one has been a pain--it does not detect the parking brake and even with the reverse camera wire connected, it is not turning my reverse camera on while on reverse. Very frustrating.

Pros:

Cons: Caused an electrical problem that turned on my check engine light, and mechanics cannot make it go away. I will end up spending thousands of $$ to try to figure out how to turn the light off.

Crutchfield response on 8/16/2021
We're sorry that the PAC interface posed issues with the vehicle's "Check Engine" light after your installation, and we understand the frustration. One of Crutchfield's Tech Support gurus, AJ, reached out to this customer with a thorough checklist on ways to try to overcome this light issue. We're awaiting feedback to see if any of AJ's suggestions worked to eliminate the problem. Remember, you get lifetime technical support on items you purchase from Crutchfield.

works great if it works, module that was sent malfunctioned and it needed to be replaced. While waiting for the replacement, went to another source to buy another kit to troubleshoot shoot the installation process. first two kits had a bad module. went again for a third module after calling customer service and determine the only thing could be wrong was the module. fortunately 3rd time was a charm, other than that fiasco module does what it's supposed to do. SWC integration works flawlessly.

I used this on a 2008 Toyota Sienna to install a Android auto radio. I wasn't sure if I could install this when I first saw all the wiring, but with some patience everything worked out. I had to read through the directions quite a few times and also watched a few youtube videos. One issue I had was Android Auto didnt want to work. The easy way to deal with it was to wire the parking brake wire in one the radio wire harness in with the ground wire. Other than that I had no issues. My steering wheel controls work.

Effective and required - just one small thing...

Crutchfield customer from Pembroke, MA on 6/9/2021

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bought this harness based on Crutchfield's recommendation to pair it with a Boss touchscreen for my 2007 4Runner. It workes and was definitely needed. The only thing that didn't work was the violet wire used to send a signal to the reverse wire into the stereo from the car to tell the head unit to show a backup camera when putting the car in reverse. I'm not sure if it's the car's fault or the harness, but docking one star since I had to then manually tap into the car's reverse wire and run a new wire into the head unit's harness and bypass this one. Other than that, everything else worked, including the steering wheel controls which was great.

Pros: - Definitely needed - get it - Steering wheel controls all worked

Cons: - Reverse wire signal didn't work for the backup camera

This worked great. I had a earlier version with the SWC and factory amp adapter being two separate modules. 2013 Tundra (non-JBL, no Nav) with new Sony head unit - This works as advertised. Steering wheel controls function as expected. Note that you have to tie one harness to the new head unit harness yourself. I used butt splice crimps and it was straight forward and the wire to wire instructions are crystal clear. I expected full plug and play (which may be available with Crutchfield's "Ready Harness") for some reason. Again, not difficult and very clear instructions, I just didn't expect it.

Works as it should, has too many variants (used for multiple vehicles) so has lots of extra dead connectors that have to get tucked behind unit. Bought so steering wheel controls still work and it does that nicely. Just not a fan of extra wires hanging out. Also, for mine to work fully it has a plug adapter to the ob2 connector. Lame. Opted to cut that harness and hard wire above the ob2 so it doesnt look dumb. Works great, bad extra unneeded stuff

Confusing but necessary for some vehicles

2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Overall, once product is installed, it seems to perform well, however the installation instructions are confusing and intimidating at first, until you get a grasp on how the device operates and interfaces with your vehicle. I needed this product to install an Alpine ILX-W650 into a Toyota FJ Cruiser. The OBD-II connection included with this wiring harness interface worked for about 20 seconds and then I was unable to get it to work again. Also, the radio harness, which has all of the individual speaker connections, was loose on this device and caused the speakers to fade in and out, until I was able to firmly press in the harness connection and now it seems to work fine. Once installed, product is operating fine and doesn't seem to affect the overall fidelity of the sound system.

Pros: Easily maintains steering wheel control functions Doesn't affect sound quality

Cons: Confusing and intimidating instructions OBD-II harness for parking brake, speed, and reverse sensing is unreliable and is not a legitimate solution, at least for the FJ Cruiser Cheap plastic on actual interface device and had a loose harness connector

Let me first say I know nothing about car radio installation and I felt incredibly initiated by the whole process. Lots of wires and connectors to deal with which seemed somewhat overwhelming. The PAC adapter made my install very straightford. It looks intimidating, but it really isn't. For starters, you simply connect the smaller supplied PAC connector bundle to your aftermarket radio's wiring. Just follow Crutchfield's wiring diagram for your car (emailed to you) and that's half the battle. I chose to solder the wires together and finish off with heat shrink tubing. The PAC kit's larger wire/connector bundle simply bridges your vehicle's internal radio connectors to the PAC interface box. Maybe three of the large PAC harness connectors are actually used for this purpose. One important note: After I installed my PAC interface, the steering wheel controls did not work. A quick call to Crutchfield's tech support revealed the need to reset the PAC interface box a few times and BOOM, the steering wheel controls worked. Thank you John from Crutchfield Tech Support!

Pros: Seems intimidating nor noobs, like myself, but the PAC interface was fairly straightforward.

Crutchfield customer from Austin, TX on 9/17/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

It seems to work part of the time. But mysteriously the functions dropped off. First the steering wheel control, then speakers stopped working. Turns out the problem is that there is no room in the dash for all these components to hang out. So every bump shorts a wire where they all connect into the PAC RP4.2-TY11's input harness connects. When I applied a small amount of pressure against the harness speakers would short out. I don't like having to take the thing apart 5 times to find the weak link. So, not happy with the design of this crap. When you try to be everything to everyone, you end up being nothing to nobody.

Pros: Works initially.

Cons: Design flaw is there is a lot of extra stuff that can interfere with operation after everything is installed.

Wow do I really need all these wires? I paid for the prepared wiring bundle feature. Maybe there was an easier way? I am not the "typical DIY-er". I like to do a lot of research on any project I attempt- and there was nothing out there that was specific enough for my situation. Boy, there were so many wires I could barely stuff this and them all behind the new head unit. Additionally the "specific" instructions left a lot to be desired. Thank God you pay customer service employees, cause the sheets supplied were confusing and even contradicted themselves. I called twice and am I glad I did.

Man this little thing can do a lot. Its packed full of awesome stuff that can make your head unit do anything you can imagine, and probably some things you can't. However, I just wanted my volume button to work on my steering wheel. Its supposed to just work for the easy stuff, which it probably does 99% of the time, but not for me. While my head unit works, and I have sound coming out of all of my speakers, I still haven't gotten the PAC RP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface to work with my steering wheel. Its not that I haven't tried, but at this point I haven't had the time to troubleshoot. Because this unit does so many different things for different vehicles, the instructions don't provide much guidance beyond basic installation before moving on to programming.

Pros: Lots of options, plug and play

Fairly simple to install. Some of the programming instructions aren't crystal clear (you have to do it all in one go, which isn't specified). Wasn't able to program buttons on my steering wheel to answer and end calls, which the manuals for the interface and the radio say I can do, which is disappointing.

Pros: Simple installation. Plugs fit obviously. Works as specified (mostly).

Works Great - Despite Confusing Instructions

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This unit was part of the package that I ordered with my Pioneer DMH-1500NEX. We recently acquired a 2008 RAV-4 and I wanted to update the audio system to include Car Play for my daughter. In reading the reviews, I knew installing this could be a challenge, so I read up on the instructions and watched YT videos to prepare for the process. In the end, this product works very well and retains all the SWCs, which is what I wanted. That said, the instructions are SO confusing and convoluted. They try and cover far too many permutations, and even fail to talk about a mysterious blue wire that, after calling Crutchfield support, I was told could just be capped. Yes, it works great, but I'm knocking a star off for the instructions.

Pros: Retains full SWC functionality

Cons: Confusing, convoluted instructions Extra blue wire with no description

2015 Toyota Prius

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The trick with this harness: go slow, read everything, use common sense. I used this with a Sony XAV-AX1000 in my Prius to retain SWC, backup cam (w/ harness), and just make the connecting easier. There's a lot going on with the wiring, but the extra wires are there just in case you might need them. There's a few connectors that you likely won't use. Just take your time, compare to what's in your car, an use common sense when splicing them to the radio's wiring. It took me a couple hours but I was able to sit at the table and wire everything, then just plug it into the car and watch everything start working as soon as I turned it on. The SWC programming instructions did not match my radio, but the Sony I got has it's own SWC customization in the Settings menu, so check your radio's manual first. If you have a newer car I would say this is necessary to make an aftermarket radio feel like it came with your car.

Pros: Can retain every feature, once wired to your radio it's essentially plug and play

Cons: A mess of wires, lots of connectors that go unused, difficult to separate unused wiring

It plugs right into your vehicles harness and retains steering wheel controls. However, the connectors to the device itself do not seem very robust. Upon testing I had to wiggle the interface connector 4 to get it to function. Once I had everything tucked into the dash it stopped working again- until I managed to push on connector 4 again. Who knows how long it will function- I am not impressed with the physical quality of the device.

It did what it's supposed to do. A lot of extra connectors that don't get used as it's designed to work across several vehicle platforms which creates extra work when installing.

Pros:

Cons: A lot of extra unused connectors that take up space in an already tight area when installing.

2013 Toyota Venza

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Unimpressed with this unit. It does WORK but has some caveats. First, in my 13 Toyota Venza with factory JBL system I needed to turn the ignition to accessory for a few seconds before starting the engine or it wouldn't successfully power up the factory amp. Second, the gain was WAY TOO HIGH. Volume level was crazy loud and needed to be adjusted farther than the dash pot would allow. Third, had a pronounced hiss because it processes the sounds before sending it to the amp - lots of unnecessary audio processing seems to be done in this unit. Ended up upgrading to an iDatalink Maestro RR, which I would recommend.

Pros: Simple installation with Crutchfield's premade harness

Cons: Just doesn't work that great.

This is the only way to go if you want to keep your steering wheel controls. Plug and play, for the most part, but there may be some programming from the control head that needs to take place.

Pros: Ease of use and installation

Cons: There were two connectors that didn't come with clear instructions, but the helpline was great. The OBDII connector must be connected to use the full functionality of the Bluetooth and SWC. The SWC jack didn't have clear instructions, but the helpline was able to direct me to a final solution. Clearer instructions would be my only compliant.

I've installed several stereos over the years and when I first opened this box and a tangle of wires came out, I thought for moment I might be over my head, but installation is very straight forward. A bit of slicing into the stereo's harness and the rest is practically plug and play. My car had the option for a reverse camera but didn't come with one, this integrated easily into the aftermarket camera I had previously installed

Pros: -Easy to use -Works with aftermarket camera

Cons: This allows for the integration of several features, but with my car I only needed the steering wheel controls, so I paid a lot for the use of those four little buttons :)

Made hookup of new speakers and head unit a breeze with no cutting into factory harness. Very nice that comes preprogramed for the typical controls used. My only issue with the instructions was that there was one wire from the adapter that was not addressed in any way or identified. I was plain blue wire( no stripe). It wasn't in the instructions anywhere. I ended up just capping off and have not noticed any problems.

Thought I was buying a product to keep my steering wheel controls without the hassle of EXTRA wiring! Got it all hooked up and NOTHING happened. Called Technical support and talked to Carl, he explained i had to connect the harness to the port underneath my Steering Wheel, Carl offered to walk me through it even sent pictures to go by but it was late and i was tired of messing with all the wires. Needless to say i paid for convenience i did not receive. Carl was very patient and pleasant to talk to, he is 5 stars. I might try his solution at a later date.

You will need this for certain applications, no question. The hookups are pretty much no-brainer. However, and I'm not sure whether the following is due to the head unit (Sony XAV-AX5000), this interface (PAC RAP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface), my application (2006 Toyota Sequoia with JBL system - I retained the JBL amp - with Infinity Reference 6030cs front speakers [2 ohm speakers to match the factory JBL system specs]), or a combination of factors, but... The Gain could not increase beyond the minimum without distorting the sound even at mid-volume levels. While radio volume is OK (not great), and bluetooth-fed volume is OK (not great), phone call volume is so weak I cannot even use it to conduct phone conversations - in other words, when increasing the volume to get "great" sound from radio or bluetooth, or trying to get even "OK" sound from phone calls, the sound starts distorting badly. (To clarify, regarding phone use, the person on the other end can hear me very clearly - it's just that the weak volume through the speakers makes it very difficult for me to hear them.) So - yes - you will definitely need this (or something like it) for certain applications, but understand that you may want to change up a few things to make it respond properly. For me, I wanted to keep the factory amp, and therefore the 2 ohm speakers, etc., whereas doing a complete system changeout (head unit, all speakers, and amp) may not have same results.

Pros: Super easy hookup

Cons: Gain not functional for me

The PAC RP4.2TY11 wiring interface works well. However, the instructions were written for a professional installer and definitely not for a DIY guy. Two calls to Crutchfield (very helpful people) would not have been necessary if the PAC instructions explained how the unit works, what does what, what wires go where, and ALL the programming steps. They use a ton of acronyms that mean nothing to me. Took me a solid hour to figure out what all their terms mean. I finally gave up trying to program SWC (this means Steering Wheel Controls by the way) on the PAC. I'd had more than enough of the thing. That said, it does pick up a lot of info from the car via the OBD2 connection (thank Crutchfield for explaining that). This saves a LOT of wiring. Pay the extra $ to get Crutchfield to wire it up. That would have saved me some time. In short, it works great but the documentation is pretty frustrating.

Pros: Works great Saves wiring

Cons: Poor documentation causes hours of unnecessary frustration.

FYI, I have NO experience with installing car radios. This really helped simplify the install of my Sony AV1000. Yes, the instructions are not awesome but between reading them several times as well as looking up YouTube videos, it really is not that hard to figure out. In addition, I paid for Crutchfield to pre-wire my radio to this harness and that was $25 well spent if you don't want to learn wire crimping on your new purchase. Basically, it's all plug and play except for the wires that come from your radio, however, you can even make that plug and play if you pay for Crutchfield to pre-crimp the wires for you. Finally, I called support for something and the tech I got was knowledgable, patiend, and helpful. Overall I had a great experience.

Pros: Simplifies the intsall and allows you to retain your features (steering wheel controls, fading, etc...)

Cons: It may be tricky to shove all this stuff in the dash behind the radio.

The only thing that stops me giving this a 5-star review is that the instructions were a bit vague. That said, the Crutchfield service rep got me straightened out. Made the install easy, and got done in about an hour.

Pros: Everything fit as expected. Crutchfield service was awesome !

Cons: Took a while to figure out that there are extra connectors on each side that don't get used.

Poorly made product that didn't even do it's job before burning up!

2013 Scion tC

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I got the entire interface hooked up and installed for my 2013 Scion TC. The first thing I noticed was my rear speakers weren't working. I had to unplug the amplified option and plug into the non-amplified option to get those to work even though there is a factory amp installed in the car. The steering wheel controls were also not working and before I could sort that out I smelled a burning smell so I quickly turned off the car to investigate. It turns out the smell was coming from the interface itself and something inside the unit had fried. So I returned the defective unit and went another route with much more success. This product is cumbersome and ultimately didn't even do the task it was purchased for before terminating, thankfully, it's own existence. I'm just glad it didn't harm anything in my car or my Pioneer stereo at the same time.

Pros: Absolutely none!!!

Cons: Overly cumbersome, faulty design, poorly made, failure to do the simple task it was made for

Pros: Retained steering wheel control and amp.

Cons: Did not have a way to retain factory backup camera. For the price they could have added the one connector. Js

Thankfully Crutchfield's tech support was quickly able to help me solve the issues I was having with retaining my steering wheel controls. With this PAC I was able to retain 100% of my factory functionality which was absolutely vital. The radio antenna does not work at all. There is a missing adapter piece that combines the two Toyota antennas into a single large jack for aftermarket radios. I'd be happy to provide information on this if requested.

Pros:

Cons:

Crutchfield response on 3/26/2019
Once we saw this review, our Tech Support specialist, AJ, reached out to help this customer. Toyota vehicles have a "diversity" tuning system; the radio has dual AM/FM tuners and it will also have dual AM/FM antennas. Since the new radio can't replicate this with a single tuner, there's no need (or benefit) of combining the two factory AM/FM antennas into one. Just use the larger of the two antennas (only one should fit snug, the other will be smaller and loose).

I was initially intimidated because this was my first car stereo installation. However, the wiring interface and installation instructions were great. I was able to install the new Sony head unit (including connecting all steering wheel controls) and it worked the first time! This wiring interface also provided input to the "parking brake" and "reverse" signals so that I didn't have to independently tap into them for stereo connection. Overall, very satisfied with this purchase.

Works fine with my RAV4 V6 Limited (with JBL sound system). I wish it was made more vehicle-specific though, as it has many unused wires and connectors, and the result is a very bulky package. Luckily there was a lot of space behind the radio, so managed to stuff everything in.

Pros: Works well, allowed me to retain factory amp and steering wheel controls.

Cons: To many unused wires and bulky connectors, for this price I was expecting something more vehicle-specific.

Dan from Houston, TX on 1/25/2019

This is an expensive, bad product. My installer had trouble getting the steering wheel controls configured to the right commands. The 'next track' button wouldn't work. Eventually he repeated the same steps to configure the buttons over and over again (about 20 times), and it magically worked on the last try. I'm glad it works now, but it's insane that repeating the same exact steps, over and over, somehow yield different results. The steering wheel controls were being mapped to all the wrong commands each time.

4 Star, could be 5 with some tweaks

Crutchfield customer from Pooler, GA on 1/21/2019

2011 Toyota Camry

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Would be a 5 star product with some tweaks. First the red power wire is not red, it's bright fuchsia. There is a red wire with a white stripe but that's not the right one. Second the blue wire with white stripe has a tag on it that says System Remote Control- this label is ridiculously confusing as this wire is needed for the non-amplified antenna to receive full power. Nothing in the documentation received says anything about connecting this to the Interface for connector to the aftermarket radio harness. Frustrating after you get everything buttoned back up to learn the radio signal is almost nonexistent! Then have to tear it back apart to connect the wire that really isn't labeled right in my opinion. Make these tweaks and it's a great product!

Pros:

Cons: Wires aren't actual colors- I.E. red power wire is fuchsia not red! Labels on some wires make no sense- see blue wire white stripe issue above.

Really easy to connect - paid extra for Crutchfield to do the initial wiring and I'm so glad I did. Honestly, it took me about an hour to figure out exactly what this unit was doing and what needed to be connected/what I could just ignore. As others have stated, documentation isn't really thorough. Eventually I just tried it and when it seemed to work out fine, I just jammed everything back into the dash and reinstalled all the panels I removed while hoping for the best. I was thrown off because I think one of the manuals said I should have three clips connected and I only ended up having two...
