Works as advertised. Had to ziptie the connector into the PAC that ties into the radio harness as it would intermittently loose connection to speakers when plugged in resulting in speakers not working at times. Put a ziptie through the harness and around the PAC unit and problem solved.

These work perfect. You may not need to use all the wires. I ran into this problem, thought "ugh-oh" what have I missed? I called customer service. Boom, handled and done! They walked me through what I needed to install the system. Let me digress. When I first ordered the products They walked me through what I was going to need. With instructions emailed to me as well. They asked if I might need any tools I might need. Well, of course! What gave you got. Furthermore, Crutchfield is wonderful, from beginning to end, and every step in between!

Pros: Everything imaginable or auditable.

Once removed from the box the sheer amount of wires can be intimidating, and the instructions only lead to further confusion. After watching several videos of the product I felt confident enough to install it.

You get a lot, when you might only need a little

Crutchfield customer from Miami, FL on 7/19/2020

2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Man this little thing can do a lot. Its packed full of awesome stuff that can make your head unit do anything you can imagine, and probably some things you can't. However, I just wanted my volume button to work on my steering wheel. Its supposed to just work for the easy stuff, which it probably does 99% of the time, but not for me. While my head unit works, and I have sound coming out of all of my speakers, I still haven't gotten the PAC RP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface to work with my steering wheel. Its not that I haven't tried, but at this point I haven't had the time to troubleshoot. Because this unit does so many different things for different vehicles, the instructions don't provide much guidance beyond basic installation before moving on to programming.

Pros: Lots of options, plug and play

Cons: difficult to understand instructions, may require programming

Really glad I got the PAC interface because it allowed me to keep all of my factory features (oem sub, steering wheel control etc). Crutchfield sent a wiring guide that took any guesswork out of the wiring. Install was quick and easy.

Easy to install, confusing to program

Crutchfield customer from Oxnard, CA on 6/10/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Fairly simple to install. Some of the programming instructions aren't crystal clear (you have to do it all in one go, which isn't specified). Wasn't able to program buttons on my steering wheel to answer and end calls, which the manuals for the interface and the radio say I can do, which is disappointing.

Pros: Simple installation. Plugs fit obviously. Works as specified (mostly).

Cons: Programming steering wheel buttons isn't clearly explained, and two functions that should be available to me (according to the manual) don't work.

Worked perfect to integrate the aftermarket stereo with existing steering wheel controls, etc. The included instructions looked complicated, but fortunately, Crutchfield already had it setup for my application, so it was simple plug-and-play!

Works Great - Despite Confusing Instructions

John from West Bloomfield on 6/6/2020

2008 Toyota RAV4

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This unit was part of the package that I ordered with my Pioneer DMH-1500NEX. We recently acquired a 2008 RAV-4 and I wanted to update the audio system to include Car Play for my daughter. In reading the reviews, I knew installing this could be a challenge, so I read up on the instructions and watched YT videos to prepare for the process. In the end, this product works very well and retains all the SWCs, which is what I wanted. That said, the instructions are SO confusing and convoluted. They try and cover far too many permutations, and even fail to talk about a mysterious blue wire that, after calling Crutchfield support, I was told could just be capped. Yes, it works great, but I'm knocking a star off for the instructions.

Pros: Retains full SWC functionality

Cons: Confusing, convoluted instructions Extra blue wire with no description

Be Patient!

Crutchfield customer from Florida on 5/25/2020

2015 Toyota Prius

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The trick with this harness: go slow, read everything, use common sense. I used this with a Sony XAV-AX1000 in my Prius to retain SWC, backup cam (w/ harness), and just make the connecting easier. There's a lot going on with the wiring, but the extra wires are there just in case you might need them. There's a few connectors that you likely won't use. Just take your time, compare to what's in your car, an use common sense when splicing them to the radio's wiring. It took me a couple hours but I was able to sit at the table and wire everything, then just plug it into the car and watch everything start working as soon as I turned it on. The SWC programming instructions did not match my radio, but the Sony I got has it's own SWC customization in the Settings menu, so check your radio's manual first. If you have a newer car I would say this is necessary to make an aftermarket radio feel like it came with your car.

Pros: Can retain every feature, once wired to your radio it's essentially plug and play

Cons: A mess of wires, lots of connectors that go unused, difficult to separate unused wiring

I was disappointed with the wiring interface. There were some loose connections that caused the speakers to cut out randomly. I had to return the whole package to get the problem corrected. The stereo itself seemed to work okay though. I am awaiting the replacement system.

Pros: Great customer service from Cris!

Cons: Great idea. that theoretically should have worked, but it did not work.

It plugs right into your vehicles harness and retains steering wheel controls. However, the connectors to the device itself do not seem very robust. Upon testing I had to wiggle the interface connector 4 to get it to function. Once I had everything tucked into the dash it stopped working again- until I managed to push on connector 4 again. Who knows how long it will function- I am not impressed with the physical quality of the device.

It did what it's supposed to do. A lot of extra connectors that don't get used as it's designed to work across several vehicle platforms which creates extra work when installing.

Works but with some big caveats.

Crutchfield customer from Pembroke, NH on 5/5/2020

2013 Toyota Venza

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Unimpressed with this unit. It does WORK but has some caveats. First, in my 13 Toyota Venza with factory JBL system I needed to turn the ignition to accessory for a few seconds before starting the engine or it wouldn't successfully power up the factory amp. Second, the gain was WAY TOO HIGH. Volume level was crazy loud and needed to be adjusted farther than the dash pot would allow. Third, had a pronounced hiss because it processes the sounds before sending it to the amp - lots of unnecessary audio processing seems to be done in this unit. Ended up upgrading to an iDatalink Maestro RR, which I would recommend.

Pros: Simple installation with Crutchfield's premade harness

Cons: Just doesn't work that great.

This is the only way to go if you want to keep your steering wheel controls. Plug and play, for the most part, but there may be some programming from the control head that needs to take place.

Pros: Ease of use and installation

Cons: There were two connectors that didn't come with clear instructions, but the helpline was great. The OBDII connector must be connected to use the full functionality of the Bluetooth and SWC. The SWC jack didn't have clear instructions, but the helpline was able to direct me to a final solution. Clearer instructions would be my only compliant.

I've installed several stereos over the years and when I first opened this box and a tangle of wires came out, I thought for moment I might be over my head, but installation is very straight forward. A bit of slicing into the stereo's harness and the rest is practically plug and play. My car had the option for a reverse camera but didn't come with one, this integrated easily into the aftermarket camera I had previously installed

Pros: -Easy to use -Works with aftermarket camera

Cons: This allows for the integration of several features, but with my car I only needed the steering wheel controls, so I paid a lot for the use of those four little buttons :)

Made hookup of new speakers and head unit a breeze with no cutting into factory harness. Very nice that comes preprogramed for the typical controls used. My only issue with the instructions was that there was one wire from the adapter that was not addressed in any way or identified. I was plain blue wire( no stripe). It wasn't in the instructions anywhere. I ended up just capping off and have not noticed any problems.

Thought I was buying a product to keep my steering wheel controls without the hassle of EXTRA wiring! Got it all hooked up and NOTHING happened. Called Technical support and talked to Carl, he explained i had to connect the harness to the port underneath my Steering Wheel, Carl offered to walk me through it even sent pictures to go by but it was late and i was tired of messing with all the wires. Needless to say i paid for convenience i did not receive. Carl was very patient and pleasant to talk to, he is 5 stars. I might try his solution at a later date.

Pros: May have some but haven`t found any yet.

You will need this for certain applications, no question. The hookups are pretty much no-brainer. However, and I'm not sure whether the following is due to the head unit (Sony XAV-AX5000), this interface (PAC RAP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface), my application (2006 Toyota Sequoia with JBL system - I retained the JBL amp - with Infinity Reference 6030cs front speakers [2 ohm speakers to match the factory JBL system specs]), or a combination of factors, but... The Gain could not increase beyond the minimum without distorting the sound even at mid-volume levels. While radio volume is OK (not great), and bluetooth-fed volume is OK (not great), phone call volume is so weak I cannot even use it to conduct phone conversations - in other words, when increasing the volume to get "great" sound from radio or bluetooth, or trying to get even "OK" sound from phone calls, the sound starts distorting badly. (To clarify, regarding phone use, the person on the other end can hear me very clearly - it's just that the weak volume through the speakers makes it very difficult for me to hear them.) So - yes - you will definitely need this (or something like it) for certain applications, but understand that you may want to change up a few things to make it respond properly. For me, I wanted to keep the factory amp, and therefore the 2 ohm speakers, etc., whereas doing a complete system changeout (head unit, all speakers, and amp) may not have same results.

Pros: Super easy hookup

Cons: Gain not functional for me

The PAC RP4.2TY11 wiring interface works well. However, the instructions were written for a professional installer and definitely not for a DIY guy. Two calls to Crutchfield (very helpful people) would not have been necessary if the PAC instructions explained how the unit works, what does what, what wires go where, and ALL the programming steps. They use a ton of acronyms that mean nothing to me. Took me a solid hour to figure out what all their terms mean. I finally gave up trying to program SWC (this means Steering Wheel Controls by the way) on the PAC. I'd had more than enough of the thing. That said, it does pick up a lot of info from the car via the OBD2 connection (thank Crutchfield for explaining that). This saves a LOT of wiring. Pay the extra $ to get Crutchfield to wire it up. That would have saved me some time. In short, it works great but the documentation is pretty frustrating.

Pros: Works great Saves wiring

Cons: Poor documentation causes hours of unnecessary frustration.

FYI, I have NO experience with installing car radios. This really helped simplify the install of my Sony AV1000. Yes, the instructions are not awesome but between reading them several times as well as looking up YouTube videos, it really is not that hard to figure out. In addition, I paid for Crutchfield to pre-wire my radio to this harness and that was $25 well spent if you don't want to learn wire crimping on your new purchase. Basically, it's all plug and play except for the wires that come from your radio, however, you can even make that plug and play if you pay for Crutchfield to pre-crimp the wires for you. Finally, I called support for something and the tech I got was knowledgable, patiend, and helpful. Overall I had a great experience.

Pros: Simplifies the intsall and allows you to retain your features (steering wheel controls, fading, etc...)

Cons: It may be tricky to shove all this stuff in the dash behind the radio.

I got the entire interface hooked up and installed for my 2013 Scion TC. The first thing I noticed was my rear speakers weren't working. I had to unplug the amplified option and plug into the non-amplified option to get those to work even though there is a factory amp installed in the car. The steering wheel controls were also not working and before I could sort that out I smelled a burning smell so I quickly turned off the car to investigate. It turns out the smell was coming from the interface itself and something inside the unit had fried. So I returned the defective unit and went another route with much more success. This product is cumbersome and ultimately didn't even do the task it was purchased for before terminating, thankfully, it's own existence. I'm just glad it didn't harm anything in my car or my Pioneer stereo at the same time.

Pros: Absolutely none!!!

Cons: Overly cumbersome, faulty design, poorly made, failure to do the simple task it was made for

The radio antenna does not work at all. There is a missing adapter piece that combines the two Toyota antennas into a single large jack for aftermarket radios. I'd be happy to provide information on this if requested.

Pros:

Cons:

Crutchfield response on 3/26/2019
Once we saw this review, our Tech Support specialist, AJ, reached out to help this customer. Toyota vehicles have a "diversity" tuning system; the radio has dual AM/FM tuners and it will also have dual AM/FM antennas. Since the new radio can't replicate this with a single tuner, there's no need (or benefit) of combining the two factory AM/FM antennas into one. Just use the larger of the two antennas (only one should fit snug, the other will be smaller and loose).

Works fine with my RAV4 V6 Limited (with JBL sound system). I wish it was made more vehicle-specific though, as it has many unused wires and connectors, and the result is a very bulky package. Luckily there was a lot of space behind the radio, so managed to stuff everything in.

Pros: Works well, allowed me to retain factory amp and steering wheel controls.

Cons: To many unused wires and bulky connectors, for this price I was expecting something more vehicle-specific.

This is an expensive, bad product. My installer had trouble getting the steering wheel controls configured to the right commands. The 'next track' button wouldn't work. Eventually he repeated the same steps to configure the buttons over and over again (about 20 times), and it magically worked on the last try. I'm glad it works now, but it's insane that repeating the same exact steps, over and over, somehow yield different results. The steering wheel controls were being mapped to all the wrong commands each time.

4 Star, could be 5 with some tweaks

Crutchfield customer from Pooler, GA on 1/21/2019

2011 Toyota Camry

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Would be a 5 star product with some tweaks. First the red power wire is not red, it's bright fuchsia. There is a red wire with a white stripe but that's not the right one. Second the blue wire with white stripe has a tag on it that says System Remote Control- this label is ridiculously confusing as this wire is needed for the non-amplified antenna to receive full power. Nothing in the documentation received says anything about connecting this to the Interface for connector to the aftermarket radio harness. Frustrating after you get everything buttoned back up to learn the radio signal is almost nonexistent! Then have to tear it back apart to connect the wire that really isn't labeled right in my opinion. Make these tweaks and it's a great product!

Pros:

Cons: Wires aren't actual colors- I.E. red power wire is fuchsia not red! Labels on some wires make no sense- see blue wire white stripe issue above.

Really easy to connect - paid extra for Crutchfield to do the initial wiring and I'm so glad I did. Honestly, it took me about an hour to figure out exactly what this unit was doing and what needed to be connected/what I could just ignore. As others have stated, documentation isn't really thorough. Eventually I just tried it and when it seemed to work out fine, I just jammed everything back into the dash and reinstalled all the panels I removed while hoping for the best. I was thrown off because I think one of the manuals said I should have three clips connected and I only ended up having two...

While it works in my 2009 Prius, it has taken four calls to Crutchfield support and significant time searching on the internet to get it operating properly. The documentation is riddled with mistakes and omissions. If you do need to configure the device it can only be done with a Windows application that works intermittently. There is no longer a wire on the connector for the antenna amplifier, this means no AM radio in the Prius unless I am willing to cut one of the wires to the factory harness and connect it to power myself The instructions state "Adjustment of the vehicle settings through the original radio's vehicle settings menu will be disabled after installation fo the new radio." What this actually means is that you have to center your fade and balance and set volume to max before removing the factory head uint. Otherwise you will have to use their app with a Windows laptop to change the settings in the device. It has no effect on any other settings in the vehicle as far as I can tell. Also for the Toyota, the Crutchfield instructions say to install a resistor on the factory harness to retain climate control and other functionality on the main car display. If you do this it will cause audio dropouts and other issues, and the RP4 already handles this.

Cons: Horrible documentation

Decided to return the Metra unit and use this instead to simplify the SWC connections on my JBL Toyota. SWC works great, but the Metra unit had better sound. I notice new clipping at moderate volumes that has me endlessly messing with the EQ. Also, the FM signal is weaker so I suspect a voltage drop to the built-in Toyota antenna amplifier - it requires 12v and is sourced by the blue wire indicated for remote power amp turn-on. I'll be pulling the unit again and testing that voltage - if it's low I'll be bypassing the TY11 and running it straight from the red ACC line. I reached out to both techs and to the sales person to ask for their experience with these 2 problems but it's been several days and no response at all which is surprising.

Pros: All-in-one interface device

Cons: sound quality, very weak documentation, decline in FM reception

Three stars because mine didn't auto program and I had great difficulty going through the steering wheel control program setup. It took numerous attempts for it to work although some of that was probably a learning curve for me. At any rate I thought I was getting a unit that was plug a play. Also, like some others have mentioned, no luck with the firmware update. Maybe Crutchfield could start updating these units before shipping to the customer. If you are buying this harness, realize it is very generic and you may have many wires and connections that are unused.

Pros: Once you get it to work it functions flawlessly.

Cons: Unit did not auto program to steering wheel controls and manual programing took several attempts. Generic harness with many unused wires and connections you are forced to deal with.

Works ok, once I bypassed the remote device 12v leads.

Crutchfield customer from Haverford, PA on 7/29/2018

2018 Toyota Tundra

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I had problems with radio reception that, as of now, I've traced back to this unit. My 2005 4Runner / non-JBL has an antenna amp that requires 12v. The PAC Audio instructions say to wire the remote lead from the radio into two wires on the harness that goes into the RP4.2-TY11. The voltage coming out of the radio was 12v, but the voltage at the antenna lead was 9.5v, which was not enough power to the antenna lead to ensure proper reception. The only thing between the radio and the antenna lead is the PAC Audio unit and a wiring harness. As of now, I've bypassed the PAC Audio unit and have wired the antenna amp directly to the radio. Reception is fine again. There's apparently an MS-Windows application that can be used to configure the RP4.2-TY11 and update firmware, but I was unable to get it to work with the unit. Maybe that provides some added configuration that would have solved by problem. Don't know. Aside from that, the steering wheel functions work fine with this unit. No ding on Crutchfield's support for this. I only called them once early in the diagnostics process, and they helped me.

2006 Toyota 4Runner

The box itself works well, but (at least the Toyota version) they tried to cover too many configurations with the plug and play harnesses. This makes for a rat's nest of wires and extra connectors. I ended up having to cut the unused wire and connectors out of the harnesses to get enough room in the dash for the module. Also wish the signal input was RCA line level instead of speaker output.

Pros: Steering wheel control is responsive and like the custom programming options.

Cons: Need to make more specialized Toyota wiring harnesses to prevent clutter or having to spend time cutting out unused connectors.

PAC RP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface

I'll start by saying this worked just fine, first time, including antenna power booster, steering wheel controls, etc. the instructions could use a lot of work though. There are so many potential harnesses and wires to connect to ensure compatibility with every Toyota that I had to reread the directions about 10 times. The basics (speakers, power, etc) are easy. But I ended up with one loose wire harness that was originally in my car, and probably three connectors both in my car and on this unit unused. Everything worked though, so I guess the instructions worked?

5 Star Functions

The Module gets a 5 star rating, however it did not properly sense the Parking Break on my vehicle. Crutchfield's tech service had a quick resolution for me that worked first try, but if you are not handy with car audio or car electronics you would have been left very frustrated that you paid the money for the function and it did not perform properly. I still had to spend time to run to a local auto parts store to grab some extra wire to run to make the parking brake work. All other functions for my steering wheel controls and my factory JBL amplifier and JBL sound system worked perfectly, ONCE I CONNECTED THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROL WIRE that Crutchfield FORGOT TO Connect.

Pros: 95% functional

Cons: Parking Brake sensor function did not work.

So the other reviews of this product made me a little wary of installing it. While there are a lot of wires, it's pretty simple to install. Color code the wires out of the stereo to the appropriate wires on the interface, align the dip switches, pick the correct plug for your vehicle and your in business. I have installed stereos in my personal cars before, but this is not rocket science. It made for a quick and easy install. Anyone could install this. Took a total of about an hour from opening the box to picking my stereo light colors. Very simple to use.

Pros: Easy to use, my amp and steering wheel controls work!

Cons: It looks scary. Don't fear the octopus!

This is the second one I have purchased. The first one worked intermittently after a few weeks of use. Unfortunately, I blamed the radio I installed with it at the time and since I didn't have a spare interface to troubleshoot with I had to make a best guess. Also, having limited time available to mess with car radio installations I lived with the problem past the one year warranty period. So, I finally had some time to invest in screwing around with this again and I ordered a new radio. I installed it and had the same issues. I finally called PAC and after troubleshooting we determined that the interface was bad, but would not be covered under warranty - my fault for waiting. I replaced the PAC unit and all is well, except I have a spare head unit sitting around. In short, their tech support is great - don't hesitate to call them, but my experience with the unit is 50/50 at this point. Works great if you get a working one.

Pros: Does what it says it does.

Cons: 1 st one didn't work. Difficult to troubleshoot if you don't happen to have access to a spare. Lot's of extra wires hanging around - messy installation.

As most other reviewers have indicated, this PAC is not easy to figure out. I installed this on my 04 Tundra crew cab (twice)! The first day, I wired everything as directed, but, there were two wires I wasn't sure if I used or not. It did not work . I got up the next morning, researching the PAC, reading the instructions and watching video. This gave me a better understanding of the wiring harnesses and I was able to get it all connected. The only problem is that the steering wheel controls aren't working, in the accessory position. I will see if it works when I have the engine running. This PAC allows a full range of control through the aftermarket JVC radio.

Pros: A great option for maintaining the factory amp

Cons: A lot of wiring harnesses

This unit seems overwhelming at first mostly due to the poor instructions. Starting with the aftermarket stereo speaker connections gets you started, everything after that is pretty straightforward. I also purchased this under the belief that I WOULDN'T be able to retain steering wheel control (2007 Tacoma) and was pleasantly surprised to see I could. I had to make a call to a crutchfield tech to finish installation, but they were able to get me sorted out. The knowledge held at crutchfield is why I will be a repeat customer.

Cons: Pain in the neck instructions.

Thankfully I had my harness premade or this would have been brutal. I have 6 factory connectors and 4 from the SWC that are unused and had to find room to tuck them in behind the receiver. The software had to be installed twice on my laptop and the same for the firmware. Programming was really fast to perform. Had to bypass the box to get my backup camera working. However, it was exactly what I needed to minimize the effort needed to install.

I installed this module in combination with a Pioneer AVH-291 BT in my '06 Tundra. I chose this combination with Crutchfield's recommendation to retain my SWC. The instructions are confusing, mostly because I think they are trying to cover multiple car manufacturers with one document. Once I figured it out, it was easy to install. The system worked great for about four months then the sound started to fade in and out. At first I thought it might be the deck and with Crutchfield's excellent CS I started some troubleshooting. I couldn't find any issues with the installation so they sent me a replacement deck and module. The first thing I replaced was the module. PROBLEM SOLVED! For some reason the module was causing the issue. If it happens again I might look for another alternative to this module or bypass the SWC all together, which would suck. Good luck if you purchase this product.

Pros: Retain SWC

Cons: LOTS of wires Poor instructions Malfunctioned after about four months of use.

Bought an aftermarket radio from Crutchfield a year and a half ago. The stereo died this past summer after less than a year. Really frustrated and prepared to trash the radio in a review, but wanted to make sure that it wasn't simply a fuse. Haven't had time to investigate and have been driving around with no radio since mid summer. My brother - in town for the holidays - offered to take a look at it for me today. Turns out PAC unit is the issue. Died after less than a year and had to purchase a brand new one to replace. Really, really not happy right now.

2003 4runner. Product did the job and retained steering wheel controls. Instructions are a challenge. Better instructions can be found on PAC audio website, but even those instructions contain generalized direction. Just matchup the wires according to function and don't over think it, you will have unused wires and connectors. It's a big glob of wires to stuff in the dash, I ended up taping things together trying to streamline the wiring birds-nest. No programming needed other setting the dip switches to match new head unit.
