Instructions are pretty clear, match up what they say match up, match some colors and your done. I kinda wished it was a little more organized though, ended up being a pretty big spider web of wires. Ultimately though, the kit is amazing.

Pros: easy to wire up, straight forward

Cons: Spider web of wires

Actual interface had issues with noise, and SWC functionality, required a swap.

Pros:

Cons: Size of unit makes install troublesome, should consider downsizing the interface for easier install.

PAC RP5-GM11 Wiring Interface

Crutchfield customer from Dallas, PA on 2/17/2020

2005 Chevrolet Avalanche

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I recently installed the Alpine ILX-207 in a 2005 Chevy Avalanche with the factory Bose and Rear Seat Audio system. The PAC RP5-GM11 was recommended for that model year to retain the steering wheel controls and other features. My Avalanche does not have the Rear Seat Entertainment system. Currently everything works except for the Rear Seat Audio (where you insert headphones). The RSA controls work; you can change source and use the seek function, but no audio. When the RSA is turned on the rear speakers' sound is cut out so the controls are doing something but no audio. Crutchfield technical support told me that the RSA "audio" won't work with this configuration. The Product Research website page states the PAC interface includes: Factory Entertainment Features: The RP5-GM11retains several factory entertainment features; including Bluetooth (2009+ vehicles), Aux input, rear seat entertainment (RSE), rear seat audio controls, and dual zone functionality. In order to retain factory rear seat entertainment, your aftermarket head unit must be fitted with a rear-panel AUX or AV input. Since the RP5-GM11 is outfitted with stereo RCA jacks, if your aftermarket head unit has a 3.5mmAux input, you will need a stereo RCA-to-mini jack adapter (sold separately -see accessory list). Interestingly it states support for the rear seat audio "controls" but doesn't state it supports the "audio" itself. This tends to be misleading to the consumer.

Pros: Retains most of the factory features. Plug and play.

Cons: Chime sound is poor. Lots of wires to find a space for. No support for the rear seat audio.

Great product. Retained all of my factory features. Chime sound is a bit dated, but I like that you can adjust the volume of the chime. SWC work perfect.

2003 GMC Yukon

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Worked great in my 03 Yukon. Steering wheel controls work perfectly when hooked up to the "wired remote" jack on my pioneer stereo. My only gripe is that the buzzer is so freakin loud. Like four times louder than the factory chime. It's minor but it's annoying.

Pros: Does everything it's supposed to. Maintains all factory chimes, delays, buttons, etc.

Cons: The chime is very loud even when tucked all the way back in the dash. I wish there were a volume control.

Installed in a 2006 Suburban z71

Mark from RIGBY, ID on 1/23/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed this interface in a 2006 Suburban Z71 along with a Kenwood DMX-7706s head-unit and pleased with the outcome and install procedure. If you take the time to read the instructions carefully, anyone could install this unit. I did solder and heat-shrink the connections from the interface to the head unit harness to give all the wiring a low profile. This helped consume less space Some reviews said the chime module was loud and annoying. I found that if you taped the speaker and placed it deep in the dash. you could barely hear it. I ended up removing the tape and where I have it positioned, it's perfect. Customization of your steering wheel buttons is a breeze. I left everything default, but did mess around with this customization. I did a temporary install prior to final solder and tape, to make sure everything worked. I did forget to splice BOTH the YELLOW and BLACK wires per instructions and ended up blowing the vehicle-side radio fuses . I only mention this, as it took me a bit to figure out what went wrong.

NO fade option with BOSE premium system!

Lee from Ankeny, IA on 1/5/2020

2002 GMC Envoy

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I really wish I had reviewed the specifications more closely on this device. This module does NOT allow fading capability when integrated with the BOSE premium system - which I overlooked in the detailed description. The ability to fade is as necessary as any other adjustment on a car stereo. How on earth could PAC allowed such a device to be sold in the first place? Is there another module available that does retain the fade capability? The instructions included with the module could be a little more intuitive. I've installed dozens of systems, and the instructions required considerable study before making connections. Crutchfield staff great as always - no complaints there.

Pros: Works with some of the steering wheel controls, but not all.

Cons: No fade capability - huge con.

I installed this in a 2006 Grand Prix, along with the Sony XAV-AX1000 head unit. Very simple install, however the PAC-5 doesn't play very well with the Sony... The volume is the only Steering wheel control that works as it should. (Yes I turned the selector dial to the #7 position). I reprogrammed the unit to get a few more steering wheel functions (Mute, preset 1-6, and Band which I set up as source) but call answer/end could not be programmed, nor could the tuner selector switch. The Sony is a nice unit for the price, I just wished it interfaced with the PAC 5 a little better.

This is the greatest thing for aftermarket radio installations. SO EASY. I did the entire installation during halftime of a football game. This made it so much quicker not having to look up wiring diagrams online and mess up and try again. Worked first time I plugged it up.

Pros: Makes installation easy Works with stering wheel controls

Not Happy with this Device

James from Mc Lean, VA on 9/20/2019

2007 Pontiac Grand Prix

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

So I got this thing to retain the factory chime and steering wheel controls in my 2007 Grand Prix.It has some rely in the wiring that constantly trips on and off whenever this thing moves a fraction of an inch. This also cuts power to the HU when this happens. I have had the bass in my car cause it to cut off, hitting bumps, taking turns, sneezing, closing the door, opening the door, thinking too hard, temperature fluctuations, but nothing short of banging on the passenger side of the center stack of dash or taking the dash back apart and re-situating the wire in the dash makes it come back on. Sent it back to Crutchfield but the replacement one did the EXACT same thing. Followed wiring precisely. I have not seen this issue in any other reviews so I assumed that maybe its just something with my car's electrical system but my car isnt showing any other symptoms of electrical problems so I dont know what is ticking this thing off. Long story short, if you get this thing and you have a similar issue, give up all hope and find something else, unless you are some kind of master electrician. Also, like other people say, factory chime is hopelessly crappy. just throw it away and save yourself the displeasure of ever having to hear it. Put some electrical tape over the speaker to dampen it some, got quieter but more shrill and angry. This thing hates me. Never buying anything from the company that made this piece of junk. :(

Pros: Everything it advertises it can do -If it just works it fairly easy to install

Cons: Doesn't do most of what it advertises for me -Depending on your car, could be hard to find somewhere to stuff all the extra wires. I ended up cutting the ones that didn't apply specifically to my vehicle to free up some room

If you hame a GM vehicle this is the simplistic interface to retain almost all the factory options others don't. Thanks

Pros: Comes complete

Cons: Still have to solder to radio harness they should make a complete plug and play for most vehicles

The vehicle warming chime that this "retains" is horrendous. It's a loud digital chirp that is just torture on the ears. I'm going to leave it disconnected because no one in the car can stand it. There is also some white noise that this generates through the stereo. It seems to be a bad or weak ground connection...

Pros: Easy to plug in

Cons: White noise and unbearable warning chime

This kit made my install so much easier. Tearing apart the dash to get the radio in was bad enough. If I didn't have this simple kit to install it, I would have been throwing things. ha. I paid the extra $24.99 to have Crutchfield do the extra wiring for me, and it was perfect. I am a female that does quite a bit of minor mechanic work and installed this in my 2003 H2 Hummer. I don't normally install stereos, but since this was my own, I decided I would. I had to call Crutchfield twice for minor help with wires, and they were super helpful! I would absolutely recommend getting the wiring kit and having them wire it together for you. It made my day! Thanks!

This is a necessity for factory integration. Also , if you choose to have Crutchfield wire it up, it saves you about 2 hours of tracing and reading over manuals and diagrams. When I received it with my order, it was a plug and play operation and took about 20 minutes to get it all hooked up.

I installed this along with a Soundstream VRCP-65 in my 2005 Tahoe z71 with factory Bose (regular Bose amp, not the lux amp) system. I was able to maintain OnStar, Bose sound system and steering wheel controls. I did have trouble getting the SWCs to work, but a quick call to Crutchfield's awesome tech support helped me reset the RP5-GM11 interface and then select programming #3 to get them to work. If you're trying to keep your factory GM system and just upgrade the head unit, I highly recommend!

I mean this thing does work, but it's a rats nest and a half. I have all the factory controls and chimes working after installing a new Kenwood receiver and it all runs through the factory amp and does what it says it will do. I'm giving it 3 stars for the ridiculous wiring mess it brings with it though. If they could solve that then this would be a 5 star product for me. The one thing I can't figure out though is the chime module, either I got lucky or maybe it's for a different model car not sure but I didn't need it as I still have all my factory chimes and leaving it plugged in gave me two different chimes at the same time. Kind of nice that I didn't need it because that was one less thing to have to stuff under the dash. Just worth mentioning so you can test and see for yourself if you really need it or not for your application.

Pros: Works

Cons: Rats nest

Expensive and it's required

You're already spending $500+ on a radio, but wait, here's another $85 that's required. The unit is roughly 3" square and you have to stuff that behind your new radio somewhere along with all the pigtails coming out of the radio. Add to that 3 harnesses that come out of 3 different sides of the unit. It would have been nice if all the harnesses come out 1 side so the wires could all line up in the same direction making it more compact.

Pros: Allows you to install aftermarket radios

Cons: Price Wire harness layout

Pretty much required for the install in my 2008 Corvette. Made it pretty easy, although there's some extra connection that left me a little confused during the install. NOTE: Turn down the volume on the "chime" module before install. It's way too loud.

Pros: Everything works as expected - worth the money for the simplicity

Cons: Had to call tech support to make sure some wires aren't used

The PAC is a great device and straight forward out of the box with its directions. I took one star because sometimes it can be finicky on first start up. I've had experiences where it goes into programming mode and takes over the ignition (with two different vehicles 03 Tahoe & 04 Suburban). To remedy this, a disconnect of the battery and reconnect fixed it.

Installed in '06 Silverado 2500HD (bose system), with Pioneer AVH-501ex. As described on website, I had to cut some of the support behind the dash to get the unit to fit (especially with the size of the wiring components with the PAC kit). Installation was relatively simple with basic electronic tools and connectors. 2 areas of caution for future installers: (1) instructions are misleading/inaccurate on the mute wire connections. The pioneer has a yellow/white mute wire and the PAC kit has a brown loop mute wire. The instructions say to cut the loop and connect brown to radio mute (yellow/white on my unit). When following those directions, the amp/speakers would not turn on until you turned the OnStar ON, then OFF - then the speakers came to life. Ultimately, I left the yellow/white mute wire capped and re-connected the brown loop - works perfect now. (2) the SWC harness has 2 options - only connect one or the other (NOT BOTH). There's a 2-pin connector and a blue/white wire. You may want to connect the blue/white wire to the other blue/white wires - DON'T! I hooked up the 2-pin connector and left the blue/white wire capped - all SWC buttons work great.

Pros: Retain factory functions & great sound, detailed instructions

Cons: mute wire instructions should be updated, bulky box to fit behind head unit

New life for an old Suburban

This made the installation of a Kenwood DNX994S in my 2003 Suburban "plug-n-play". The steering wheel controls worked perfectly, no programming needed. The chime module does work , but it sounds very tinny and cheap. I'm sure I'll get used to it. The wiring harnesses would have been easier to install if one side would have been a little longer. With plugs on all sides of this interface, it would work best being between the radio and the factory plug/harness. I ended up putting this to the right of the new radio behind the dash storage pocket, and it was a challenge plugging everything in with no room for two hands. There may have been more room behind the new radio if I had cut the metal brace out, but I just removed the old radio's plastic supports. My new radio fit, but it only had an inch or so behind it.

Pros: Makes wiring very simple. Retains factory steering wheel controls without extra programming.

Cons: Plug location makes installed unit a little bulky. Chime module sounds cheap.

This was my first time purchasing from Crutchfield and I will tell you that I will not shop anywhere else for Car Audio products again! They had the best customer service I have ever experienced, kind, patient and very knowledgeable. Along with the Wiring Interface, I had purchased a Pioneer Stereo from them earlier, which I recommend. They were happy to give me the discount on the Wiring Package since I had bought the stereo from them in a separate order a couple weeks prior. Upon receiving my equipment, the instructions were very clear and everything was pretty much a plug-and-play interface, with the typical connection of stereo wires (they told me about these awesome threaded wire connectors which you can see in the picture, just strip, insert, and screw together. No soldering or crimping needed!) I was able to keep all features in my 2005 GMC Sierra (steering wheel cntrls. most importantly, chime feature (this is optional which I love, just plug it in if you want to add it), my OnStar, factory Sub, ect... So far I am loving my new radio and taking advantage of every feature (USB, AUX, and BT which my wife really wanted for hands free phone calls). I was recommended this company from my Brother, and I would recommend it to anyone else! Thanks Crutchfield!

One of the connectors going to the box wouldn't connect tightly, and was causing my audio to cut in and out. I fixed that issue with a zip tie. The door chime is kind of annoying. It sounds tinny and cheap. Turning the volume down in it makes it sound a lot better. This harness is a pretty good buy, just be sure to set the dial to the right make of your stereo and make sure the harnesses are all tightly connected.

Pros: Retains on-star, bose audio, door chime, and steering wheel controls. Pretty simple to wire and install.

Cons: Harnesses may not plug in tight enough. Door chime sounds kind of cheap.

Makes it plug-n-play for the vehicle. The only reason I ding it on a star is because the steering wheel controls don't match that great, and programming them didn't work. Got it close enough and am just learning to adjust to how it works the way it is.

I installed this around 3 years ago with my radio. It worked perfect until around 6 months ago. I was driving one day when my whole dash and radio cut out. No gauges worked, as if it had completely been unplugged. I pulled over, turned the truck off, and tried to turn the truck back on. The truck did not do anything, as if I had not even turned the key. After some reading in forums, I was able to pull the PAC RP5-CM11 out in the parking lot and the truck turned back on. This unit, according to forums where others have had the same issue, is susceptible to shorting out after warranty is up. I contacted the manufacturer and Crutchfield and I am not able to get a free replacement. Unfortunately this is still the only option that provides full use of the steering wheel buttons, so I am forced to buy a new one.

Pros: Works well

Cons: Doesn't work well forever

The chime. Ugh. Crackling, obnoxious, sounds like a blown speaker being over-driven. Steering wheel controls don't work and unit doesn't dim with dash lighting. I have no way of knowing if this is the interface or due to the way it was wired by Crutchfield (I paid for the ready-harness service.) The parking brake interlock on the head unit is also a bit flaky, but again, can't isolate the failure point. Other than maintaining the chimes for doors and seatbelt, I'm not really sure what this item delivered since nothing else works. Unfortunately I have to carve out time to call and talk to someone in order to figure out what the likely culprit is. Until then, two instead of one star is the best I can do.

Pros: Not sure there are any

Cons: Horrific chime, none of the OEM controls work.

steering wheel controls do not work. everything hooked up correctly (not my first stereo install) and triple checked. the unit led lights up when a swc button pressed but doesn't do anything to the new kenwood head unit. also tried programming the buttons all separate and still nothing. seems the factory amp wire needs to share the remote wire for power up. this could be the issue but feel like I'm wasting time fighting something that won't work. Was supposed to be a nice surprise for the wife and it doesn't work. RAP sometimes works and then doesn't as well. most likely crap in a blue box!

Used for install on an 05 Yukon XL with factory Bose amplified speaker system and a JVC R930 BTS radio. Initially looked like a major project to wire and set it up. The instructions had lots of set-up options for changing programming and such. I just hooked up all the wires, plugged in the connectors as indicated and everything, including the steering wheel controls, worked without any additional programming.

I realize that different harnesses will work differently in certain vehicles, but the reviews made it sound like this harness would make "everything" work. In the C6 Corvette the steering controls for audio work, but the phone controls will not. This is confirmed with PAC. Therefore, in the case of the Corvette I rate it as merely functional.

Issues with module causing error messages on vehicle

John from Tonawanda, NY on 7/3/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Issues with Body Control Module on 2004 GM Pontiac Grand Prix. I had 3 error messages from day 1 when I installed the unit. Errors were: Service ABS system, Service Stability Control system, Service Traction Control. Apparently the Body Control Module on this vehicle did not like the electronic pass through of the PAC module. I figured I would give it a few days to adapt. It apparently did but, once or twice a month the gauges (fuel, tack, temp) will completely go dead with the exception of the speedometer. Additionally, the 3 error messages will randomly come up. I am a technician by trade so I know what I'm doing and soldiered all wires to prevent any problems, or so I thought. After 2 years the 3 error messages now will come on every other ignition start. Could this unit be bad from the start? Poor engineering?

Pros: -Makes an Aftermarket stereo work -Retains full functionality of steering wheel controls

Cons: -Intermittent error codes on computer information center for ABS, Stability control. -Gauges sometimes stop working until restarted. -Instructions not clear at times.

The connectors do not stay in the box. They have clips to hold them but they don't do anything. After three tries I got it to work I put the dash together, closed the glove box, and the glove box closing jarred the wires enough to pop back out. Also the wires connections in the connectors are poor. You can barely wiggle a wire and listen to a speaker crackle and fade in and out. And I'm not talking about a spliced wire, which would be my fault. I'm talking about in the wires going to the box.

Pros: When it works it makes the radio work.

Cons: Poor quality, bad wire connections in the connectors, connectors pop out too easy.

Speaking of the door chime, it is so loud on the factory setting that it distorts the sound, making it sound terrible. I turned it down, and it sounds better, but it is so quiet that it doesn't really grab my attention like a door chime should.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Great little interface that worked as designed, with a couple of small tweaks for my Kenwood DMX7704S. The chime is only obnoxious because its ships turned to the highest volume level. Use a small screwdriver and set it to the lowest volume first, then work your way up. If you get a repeating chime, turn everything off and reset the chime by unplugging, and replugging the interface cables again. The default setup for my radio used 5 of the 8 steering wheel buttons out of the box after being set for a Kenwood brand head. Had to program 3 buttons. The interface come with instructions to reprogram, easy to do.

Pros: -Allowed me to continue using steering wheel controls and other car features like retained accessory power. -Once the wires are all connected, it's plug and play. -Upgradable firmware if one is necessary -Very well made, solid connections -PAC support via 800 number, very responsive and helpful just like Crutchfield.
