Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Oh my gosh!!! I'm so excited to have music throughout my house!!
Pros: Everything I hoped it would be.
Russound's D1650 amplifier offers versatile multi-room flexibility and plenty of power when and where you need it for top-notch sound. Enjoy clear stereo sound in eight rooms, or combine two channels into one to give your speakers more juice — a great option for power-hungry outdoor speakers. And unlike traditional amps that run hot and waste a lot of energy, the D1650 boasts a high-efficiency Class D amplifier design for cool operation, reduced weight, and clean, undistorted sound even at high listening volumes.
The D1650 can distribute music from one audio source, such as a networked music streamer, to multiple rooms in your home. Or you can connect up to eight separate sources and play a different one in each listening room. Each of the amplifier's playback "zones" features independent left- and right-channel gain controls so you can adjust its output to fine-tune the levels of each speaker in your system. For music playback in more than eight rooms, you can daisy-chain multiple Russound amplifiers together.

Oh my gosh!!! I'm so excited to have music throughout my house!!
Pros: Everything I hoped it would be.
This amplifier is simple to use and is part of my hybrid SONOS system. The amplifier is used to drive in wall/ceiling speakers and is feed by one SONOS connect for each zone that I setup. I particularly like the type of connector that is used for connecting the speakers and that the unit comes ready for rack mounting.
Easy to install. Great sound!
Pros: Easy to install. Great sound.
Completely solved my problem just as the Crutchfield rep suggested it would. My system used to shutdown because I was trying to drive too many pairs of speakers. This amp has solved that issue.
Pros: It works perfectly and has some good configuration options should my system change in the future.
This amplifier sounds great and was relatively easy to set up. I am using it to power 16 high end Polk in-ceiling speakers and they sound amazing. I've had my speakers for almost 5 years now and they have never sounded this good. I am using it with a Sonos Connect, which is also a great product. The fact that this is a class D amplifier means it will run much cooler and it does. I have mine in the entertainment center under my TV and heat is not an issue (with that being said it still puts off some heat, but that heat's nothing when compared to a similar class AB amp). It arrived quickly and undamaged. I have and always will use Crutchfield when purchasing A/V equipment.
Pros: Great sound Cool running Lots of power
The hook-up to my 25 year old whole house system proved to be simple....the only thing I missed is a second "line" input that I had to add via a 3 way switch.
Pros: ...most all the options are covered for audio needs
Cons: could use a little more simplistic included manual....
Great quality/value for the price. I'm using the product in a "bridged" mode to power 8 outdoor speakers servicing 4 separate zones. Surrounds our pool and deck area wonderfully.
Pros: Great value
Cons: I could always use a "bit" more power.
I have bought a few of these now - they are perfect for my needs. Super simple to setup and plenty of power.
Nice sound throughout the volume range. I am no expert. Volume trim on individual channels helps. easy to figure out with no experience.
Quick install. Replaced an old Russound 1250. Great sound and controllability for multi room installation. Great packaging for shipping. Highly recommend this unit.
We bought a home that had in-wall speakers in 6 zones in addition to the family room and needed a distributed amplifier to play music in those zones. I discussed my options with Ozzy and chose the Russound 1650 for its ability to control the output to every speaker individually. My wife and I love the results! Christmas music throughout the house, priceless.
Pros: Individual speaker control Good power
I've used this amplifier at several customers houses to power both indoor and/or outdoor speakers. Always a reliable product and easy set up.
Perfect for multi room application. Sounds great. I am thinking of integrating the other rooms into a second device for more Control.
Pros: Simplicity on set up and great functionality. I looked at many amplifiers for our home system and the System integrated in to our existing system perfectly.
Cons: Had to turn volume controls up to max to acquire desired output. My other amps do not have a volume control and they have the same volume level.
I have this thing pushing 5 pairs of Klipsch AW-525s. The combination is great. The speakers sound awesome with this thing. I would like the some AW-650s in Bridge mode of this thing.
Cons: I wish you could Line In or Bus In from the front of the amp.
Works great, only wish I'd read the specs a bit more closely before purchase. I had thought the bus input on this amp could AUTOMATICALLY override the line inputs. In fact, you need to manual switch each line to the bus input. That small issue does not override how well it works to distribute audio throughout my new home.
stable and excellent sound
Failed after 40-60 hours!! Made in China. Used it to power Yamaha ceiling speakers. Input was SONUS Connect units. Sound and features are GREAT!!!! The power started cutting out intermittently. Sometimes power would come back on. Sometimes not. I played consistently loud music so the input signal was steady. It wasn't going to sleep. Maybe wifi connection too slow? Boosting up the wifi speed didn't help. Sketchy WiFi ruled out. Maybe Sonus system was faulty. I hooked up two SONUS Play 1 self powered speakers + SONUS Bridge to send input to the Play 1 speakers. The Russound powered speakers (fed by three Sonus Connects) all cut out at the same time and the blue lights all turned off but the Play 1 speakers played on... so the SONUS wasn't the problem. I contacted AMAZON where I bought it for $930 on Aug 16, 2016 (about 10 months earlier). AMAZON website replies: "No Product Support Available." WTHeck?!?! Initiated direct chat with AMAZON customer service. They directed me to Russound. Russound stated that AMAZON was not an authorized reseller and that they would not honor the warranty. True enough, their website has a cautionary page (bottom left of webpage titled: "Before you buy online...") that calls out Crutchfield and one other retailer as the ONLY authorized reseller. Russound offered to repair the unit for ~$250 + shipping both ways. So about $350 Lesson learned. Buy from Crutchfield. Pay $70 more... get a warranty. Use a good VISA/AMEX and
Pros: Runs cooler than old fashioned amps Input sensing so shut down and turns on automatically Light weight Easy install and wiring
Cons: Poor build quality Mediocre customer service
I use these units, along with Sonos Connect's, for installs where we may not have adequate heat dissipation, as they run very cool - at least compared to Class A and AB amps. They're much lighter weight, too, so save your back. They'll get that additional 1 star when 1. The volume control has an arrow indicator and are the detent type, for precise volume matching and being able to see it's setting in dark areas. 2. The switch for the Time Delay is either turned into a variable dial or, at the very least, a 3 position switch or dial with detent. The current method is too difficult to manipulate and too easy to set incorrectly. 3. Add another input bus or two, or offer a model that does. 4 would be ideal, as I've never had to use more than that and it would be so much easier than having to split outputs or run extra outputs (via digital->analog converters) from the Sonos Connect units.
Pros: Lightweight, quiet, efficient, runs comparatively cool, sound quality is great.
Cons: Needs more bus inputs, detent volume controls, Time Delay switches frustrating if having to work in tight spaces or by 'feel'.
great sounding multi channel amplifier.
Great product, sounds better than the speaker craft it replaces and works brilliantly with the 8 zone casatunes music streamer I bought to use with it. A couple of notes, if using the 12v trigger out make sure to use mono cables. Even better was Crutchfield's stellar support it helping me figure everything out.
Pros: Drop dead simple. Great sound. 12v triggers OR source sensing
Cons: Source sending poor at low volumes.
Ton of power, Sweeet sound. Highly recco.
Easy set up after discussion with Tony who helped alot, wokrs great. Have all indoor and outdoor speakers powered and linked to sonos for music apps
Pros: easy set up and power is great to all speakers
Cons: screws for speaker wire need small screw driver to get done right
Purchased this whole house amp a few weeks ago and have been playing with it since then. It seems like a pretty good product. Sound fidelity is fairly good at this price point. The installer-friendly speaker wire connections work well. I've tried bridging channels, and that also worked well for outdoor speakers that needed a little extra punch. Gain is configurable via screw adjustment on back panel. I particularly like the input auto-sensing. I haven't yet run my Kill-A-Watt meter to measure actual power usage, but I'm hopeful the power efficiency should be high. My Russound is part of a whole house Control4 system with a various devices feeding a Control4 audio matrix switch, which then feeds the amp. The amp works well in this environment.
Pros: Efficiency, sound quality, connections, small size
Cons: None yet
16-Channel/8-Zone Amplifier: The Russound D1650 digital multichannel amplifier offers the features custom installation professionals demand while offering a lighter weight, smaller chassis and more efficient Class D power. The feature-rich design of the D1650 is ideal for the demands of distributed audio systems and is also compatible with our Russound volume controls. The D1650's sixteen channels are arranged in stereo pairs to provide discreet amplification and custom configurations for each of eight zones.
System Configuration: The Russound D1650 can be configured as the main amplifier for an audio distribution system or home theater system.
Bridged Mode: When the amplifier is in Bridged mode operation, both the left and right channels are combined for a higher power mono output. In bridged mono mode, both channels in any zone become a robust mono output delivering 160 watts of power into an 8Ω load.
Ultra-Low Distortion: Ultra-low distortion output (relatively unheard of in other multi-zone amplifiers) allows for clean, undistorted audio even at high listening volumes.
Auto Sensing Zone Inputs w/ Independent Control: Each zone of the amplifier features a stereo RCA input. These line-level inputs are auto-sensing and will activate when an audio signal from a source is present. Each Zone input offers independent gain control for the left and right RCA channel. When used in Bridged Mode, only the left gain is used.
Bus Input & Output: The bus line input is a stereo RCA input that can be used to connect a single source to multiple zones. The bus line output is a stereo RCA output that allows passive passthrough of the Bus Input and can be used to daisy chain the source to other amplifiers in the system.
Speaker Outputs: The Russound D1650 multichannel amplifier is fitted with phoenix-style speaker connectors. The minimum speaker impedance is 4Ω for Stereo Mode and 8Ω for Bridge Mode.
Trigger Inputs/Outputs: The Russound multiroom amplifier features Zone 12V trigger inputs/outputs (3.5mm) and Bus 12V trigger inputs/outputs (3.5mm) for added convenience.
Zero Hum: Advanced triggering options allow the amps to operate on demand. Apart from the obvious energy efficiency, there is no amplifier hum on your speakers when the system isn't in use.
Zone Indicator LEDs: The eight LEDs on the unit's front-panel correspond to the D1650's eight stereo zone amplifiers. The LEDs will illuminate blue when the amplifier power is on and a zone is active. The LEDs do not illuminate when a zone is off.
Protection Circuitry: A robust protection circuit provides efficient, safe and reliable operation under extreme conditions and protects each amplifier output channel. Russound's resilient protection circuit maintains safe and dependable operation in maximum performance conditions.
Note: The amplifier will auto-correct itself when the trouble condition has been removed. The amplifier will then resume normal operation.
Auto Standby: The amplifier will go into Standby mode when audio signal or trigger is not present, and after the minimum delay time has timed out. The amplifier consumes 0.5 Watt or less current while in standby power mode. Standby delay can be adjusted to either 5 seconds, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes by using the DIP switches on the rear panel. This delay is selectable per zone. When an audio signal is not present, the amplifier will automatically go into standby mode after the preset period of time.
Rack Mountable: The multichannel power amplifier includes a
set of rack ears for rack mounting applications. The amplifier will take two rack
spaces with the feet removed.
Optional Volume Controls: The D1650 amplifier has been tested to work with all Russound autoformer-based volume controls (sold separately).

Reviews on other sites, as well as the information contained at Crutchfield. I chose the Russound amp over the Dayton Audio MA1260 [ David Aug 24, 2017 ]
I have not installed this equipment as yet. Mama has given very strict warning to finish the list of projects on my plate. Yeah, it kinda reminds me of days gone by, "Rich, have you eaten all your veggies?" Yes Mom! The dog didn't eat them either. They were still on the ground, where I'd tossed them out the window! However, the D1650 will be a great addition to the whole house audio when it replaces the manual knob controlled speaker selector switch. Will do an update once installed. [ Richard Jun 07, 2017 ]

I do not know about those other items. I use the 301's by themselves. A stereo sound purist and like to hear exactly how they put the final mix together in the studio which appears on the recordings. 301s sound superb in all my estimations for what I need. [ robert Aug 08, 2017 ]
I have a pair of 301s they have great sound and can Handel a lot of power , you can always move them to different rooms , or take them when you move , you can't go wrong with the Bose . I have 201s 401s and 601s so I am a big Bose fan [ Bruce Aug 07, 2017 ]

No [ William Mar 08, 2016 ]
Jesse, this amp does not have an internet connection (WI-FY or Ethernet). The only controls on the unit are power and gain (screwdriver adjustment on the rear panel for gain). The unit can be turned on / off with a hardwired 12 volt signal or it can sense the presence of audio for auto on/off. No other control options exist. John [ JOHN Mar 07, 2016 ]
No, my Yamaha receiver Zone 2 runs through the Russound amp which turns on and off depending on the signal output of the reciever. I use the Yamaha app to control the system. [ David Mar 07, 2016 ]
You can power up to two speakers per channel and that would give you two pairs per zone. I recommend calling an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your setup and see if this will work for your setup and performance goals. [ Paul Jan 04, 2016 ] Staff
Russound does not have a published specification for all channels driven; just the 2 channel specs at 1kHz & 8 Ohms: 50 watts RMS. (80 watts RMS at 4 Ohms). While I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, I hope the information helps. [ Ryan Dec 02, 2015 ] Staff
