Power for speakers and automatic source switching

Today's networked audio players, music streaming services, and remote control apps for smartphones and tablets have radically changed the way we experience music at home. You still need good clean power to drive your speakers, but you probably don't need a traditional receiver with a lot of buttons to push. Maybe all you really need is a smartly automated amp like the Russound P75.

Connect one music component as your primary source, and it will activate the amplifier when it sends out an audio signal. The amplifier returns to standby mode when the audio signal ceases. Your secondary audio source takes over automatically when there's no signal coming from the primary source. There's no need to manually switch inputs.

Say you have a network audio player, such as a Sonos Connect, connected to the primary input. Any time you fire up the Connect, your P75 turns itself on and feeds the music to your speakers. Because the P75 has two sets of speaker outputs, you could be listening in the den, the kitchen or wherever you chose to install your speakers. Because you control the Sonos Connect with a wireless controller or smartphone app, it doesn't matter where you put it. The Connect and the P75 could be out of sight in a utility closet or cabinet.

You might connect an old-school music source like a CD player to the secondary input, and enjoy it whenever you're not using your Sonos Connect. When a CD stops playing, the P75 will automatically switch to standby mode.

Great amp with some issues. I run this amp in bridge mode and get a nasty power on pop when turning on the power button only in bridge mode. My work around is to remember to un-select the speaker A button so the speaker is not engaged, turn on the amp and then push in the speaker A button and reverse the operation when turning off. Other than that simple straight forward amp.

Purchased this amp solely for use with my i-pod for music out in the garage. There is poor radio reception in our area, so I did not need a receiver for an FM signal. I am pleased the Russound P75. It delivers all the power that I need, and more to spare to drive the pair of speakers that I have hooked up. Straight forward simple hook for the i-pod and speakers. Puts out clean power to fill my garage with my favorite music.

Great little add-on amp

Crutchfield customer from Sheffield Lake, OH on 7/24/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

What a great amp for a few extra speakers. I have a 9.1 THX and four additional wall built ins. I used this as a pre-out amp to power 2 sets of outdoor and upstairs bedroom speakers. It produces greater volume than my 110w per channel Onkyo! I like that it recommends utilizing 1 set at a time, but gives you the option of a second set of speakers--because I don't want bedroom and outdoor speakers on at the same time, this was perfect for my application. And at this price, great value.

Pros: See above

Cons: I wish it had a remote for changing volumes via phone apps.

i am powering one stereo ceiling speaker with this and it works great. It also has an A and B channel incase u want to install a second pair of speakers or stereo speaker elsewhere. Lastly it an automatic switch which puts the system on standby when not in use and turns it on the second you put sound through it.

Pros: automatic on/off A and B channels powering up to 8 speakers

Cons: none. great product

Works as advertised. I give it 4 stars only because I wish the volume worked with the remote control I have for my receiver. Plenty of power for my additional speakers and now my whole house is officially wired for sound!

Pros: Powerful, easy to install (but see cons)

Cons: Volume doesn't work with my existing remote and didn't come with a remote, speaker wire attachment a bit difficult to access and very close together

You cannot go wrong with Russound and Crutchfield. I know nothing about Stereo receivers. I set up receiver, with two zones, AVX 1600 speaker selector, Russound P75 and Russound volumes controls. Nothing worked until I spoke with Clarence at Crutchfield, two wonderful people at Russound and two people at AVX. You all are a blessing to those of us do it yourselfers. Thanks again.

Sufficient power for Zone 2 home speaker needs

Danny from Staten Island, NY on 9/9/2018

So far so good for this amp. After speaking with Chad from online support we decided this amp was the best product for me within my price point. I am using this amp to power my Zone 2 line out from my receiver into a speaker selector with volume. I'm powering 6 speakers with no problem. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because it lacks the auto on trigger function. Overall, a great product.

Pros: Sleek design, easy to set up

Cons: Lacks auto trigger on function.

Love the sound but not the clicking

Anonymous from Virginia on 1/24/2018

The music sounds great, but the amp clicks between songs or when a song gets quiet. Turning off the Auto-On setting didn't affect the issue. Not sure if I had a bad unit or it's a general problem with this model, but I decided to exchange it for the AudioSource AMP100VS, which doesn't have the problem.

Pros: Sounds great.

Cons: Clicks between songs or when sound volume is low.

A Good Amp for My Small Studio

Mike from North GA on 11/3/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Pleased with this amp in my small studio. I needed to power a pair of passive speakers that route through a switching system that lets me switch between sources and speakers. I like the banana plug outputs and the purchase included 2 pair of plugs. Plenty of power for my limited use but you may want to pay a little more and get the next power grade up if you have a lot of space to cover.

Pros: A/B speaker switching, banana type outputs. Reasonable price.

Crisp sound, some additional features needed.

Soroush from Sacramento, CA on 10/29/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Incredibly simple to use but could use a couple more minor features. I do wish that you could control speaker A and speaker B volumes independently. One pair is in one room and that same volume is too high for the second room. Sound quality is great. We have all of our inputs running into the TV, Chromecast and Cable and from there we have the analog audio coming to the amplifier. So whatever is playing on the TV is what you hear. If there was an optical input I would have preferred to have a digital signal from the TV.

Pros: Minimal buttons, turns on automatically, theoretically has pass through to sub woofer, A or B speakers can be turned on independently or at the same time.

Cons: No optical input, only RCA. Not sure why RCA is still a standard. Speaker A and speaker B should have independent volume control. A remote would have been nice. These are being used in a pool house / gym so it's not convenient when you have to get off of a machine to adjust the volume.

Good amp, not for subwoofer because no crossover option

James from Folsom, CA on 9/25/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This product was easy to install, good instructions, and quality is what you should expect. My problem is that I bought this amp to power a subwoofer on a bridged mono output. There is no built in crossover so all the high end audio bleeds out of my subwoofer. Don't buy it for a subwoofer unless you have another way to cut the high frequencies.

Purchased this amp to replace a failed left channel in one of my Russound MCA-C5 zones. Cheaper solution than shipping the MCA back for out of warranty service. Works fine out of the box, but you may need to shunt source 1 if nothing else is connected to it so it doesn't act as an antenna when source 2 is not powered.

Pros: Inexpensive amp with enough features to make it fit a lot of applications needing low-medium power for relatively efficient speakers

Cons: Power/standby light is way too bright.

Excellent packaging. No blemishes on the outside. Decent reviews. What do I expect when I connect it to a pair of entry level atmos speakers? A decent sound right? It's quite the opposite. At baseline there is a constant clicking noise from the speakers... it's not even a static, a random, constant clicking noise! the amplification level is not good enough, even after adding full gain with the pre-amp. If you think it's a complete let down, it's even more surprising that the amp makes an on/off kind of ticking noise which I presume is a step up/down process of the transformer. To add insult to the injury, you have the blinding red light in front. Crutchfield should stop selling this product until Russound makes necessary amends...

Pros: none

Cons: noisy. poor amplification. bright red light.

The amp that we were using for the TV in our customer went out and I was looking for a replacement on line. I was looking to replace it with the same one but unfortunately it is no longer made so I went on line to Crutchfield and asked for a recommendation. Within 1/2 hour my inquiry was responded to with a recommendation for a nice amp. I responded telling the advisor that it was out of my budget so could he recommed me something in a less expensive price range. It was past 5:00pm in CA so I was not expecting a reply till the next day. BUT in less than 45 minutes the advisor came back with another recommendation BELOW my budget. SOLD! I paid for it and it was shipped; when it arrived took me 10 minutes to set up and my customer lounge had TV audio again. World Class customer service and excellent products, Thanks Crutchfield!!

Pros: The Amp does what i expected it to do and the set up was done in 10 minutes.

Cons: I spent a few hours shopping on the internet (on someone else's website) and that was a waste of time till I remembered Crutchfield. I should have gone to you guys first!

under powered for the two speakers it was connected to and has Speaker B outputs that I can't imagine using . it would only draw more current and lower the output more.

Pros: price and ease of set up. volume on front. auto setting

Cons: power and punch on the low frequency not there. I thought I hooked them up out of phase it was so bad.

Added this amp to my home outdoor Bose speaker system. Was looking for a cost effective amp to add to my system and this fit the bill. I don't know what the guy was talking about where his review said it was crappy sound?! I have my primary amp/receiver input from an optical source so the pre-out is clear as a bell. Will definitely get another one as my speaker bevy grows. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Power Sound Simple interface

Cons: No remote

We bought this to expand the number of speakers that we had at our location. It works very well as the speakers are located a far distance from the unit. It does get hot so we had to put it on its own shelf and add a small fan.

Pros: Works well, allows for 4 extra speakers to be added to our receiver.

Cons: Gets hot.

Functional Zone 2 Lowfi Sound

Mike from Kentucky on 8/27/2015

I use this amplifier as a Zone 2 Amp. I didn't need much functionality just something that would take audio in and send audio to B speakers in my bar's bathroom and to two small but quality Polk Audio speakers outside. I also use the audio Out to drive an FM transmitter. I turn the amp on and off using a WEMO switch and my iPad. This is possible because the amp doesn't have standby but has a manually pressed On And Off. Unfortunately, the sound quality of the Russound is extremely poor as is the power. You get what you pay for but you are likely to find a cheap receiver at a local discount retailer with better fidelity. Also, only Input 2 Routes to the output so I cannot hook up something to Input one and have it routed to my Output. That is a shame as to me it renders the automatic override function useless if you are trying to route the audio out to any other source.

Pros: Cheap. Simple.

Cons: Extremely Bad audio Quality. Low power. Does not pass Input 1 to the output.

Bridge to two different speaker arrays

Space limited to receiver feature limited. Marantz powering a Bose Acoustimas system while second set of speakers traditional. Preamp out for second set of speakers but power to traditional speakers too low even with this amp. Has to dial back the setup output to each of the Bose speakers to balance. Something easily done with a dual output receiver such as Denon but with help of Crutchfield and Marantz setup features got a system that works.

Pros: Low profile and easy to set up the amp.

Cons: Little underpowered.

After using the amp for about a month, it seems a little underpowered. My Crutchfield rep did say it would be good for background music and it's good for that. I was hoping for a fuller, more bass filled sound but it falls a little short. For the price, it gets the job done and it's a good buy.

Pros: inexpensive

Cons: slightly underpowered

Nice for the Price

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Very nice for the price. I purchased this amp to add two sets of speakers in a separate room from my main amp. I am driving it off a pre-amp output from the main. I loved the fact that you can set the amp to automatically detect whether a signal is present so I do not have to turn the power on and off whenever I want sound in the second room. However, the auto-detect is the only small issue. The first issue is, when the volume is very low, it may cut out as it does not detect a signal. The second issue is that the "On" LED is very bright. When the unit is in auto detect mode the LED cannot be turned off.

Pros: Sounds good, easy setup, low cost

Cons: The first issue is, when the volume is very low, it may cut out as it does not detect a signal. The second issue is that the "On" LED is very bright. When the unit is in auto detect mode the LED cannot be turned off.

More details on the Russound P75

Product Research

Features

Dual Source Power Amplifier: The Russound P75 is a 2-channel dual source power amplifier with auto-source switching. It features two audio line inputs with a loop out to another zone, receiver, or device from Line 2 source. This amplifier can be used for power upgrades in specific zones, for speaker selector, or volume control systems.

Class A/B Design (Bridgeable): The Russound P75 is a Class A/B amplifier rated at 75 watts per channel into 4-ohms, and 60 watts into 8-ohms. With the Stereo/Bridge Mono switch in Bridge Mono position, both amplifier channels are combined for a higher powered mono output. In Bridge mode the X75 is rated at 160 watts of power into a single 8-ohm load.

Dual Source w/ Auto-Switching: The P75 has dual source capability. If two sources are used, connect the source you want to listen to most of the time to the Line 2 (secondary) input and the source you listen to less constantly to the Line 1 (primary) input Whenever the Line 1 (primary) source becomes active, that signal will take priority over the distributed audio signal on the Line 2 (secondary) input. The signal remains active but not heard on the Line 2 input, and once the Line 1 audio signal is muted or turned off , the P75 will automatically switch back to the Line 2 (secondary) audio signal.

Front-Panel & Rear-Panel Controls: On the front-panel of the P75 are Power, Speaker A/B, Volume, and Balance controls. On the rear-panel are Stereo/Bridge, and Auto On/Manual controls.

  • Power On/Off +Auto On: The P75 amplifier can be turned on manually or automatically by setting a switch on the back panel. For manual power on or off , press the Power button on the front-panel. For automatic power on, set the switch to Auto On, and place the front-panel power button in the "On" position. When music is sensed on either input RCA connector, the amplifier's signal sensing sends a command for it to power on. Once the signal ends, the amplifier turns off.
  • Volume & Balance Controls: You can adjust the speaker output volume, as well as adjust speaker output balance between right and left channels
  • Speaker A/B Switch: You can select speaker pair A (main) or speaker pair B (auxiliary) for audio output. You can use speakers A and B together, as long as the speakers are at a minimum 8-ohm impedance.
  • Stereo/Bridge (Mono) Modes: In Stereo mode the amplifier sends separate power and audio signals to the left and right channels. In Bridge (Mono) mode both the left and right channels are combined for a higher power mono output; the minimum impedance for the total load connected to a pair of channels in the bridged mode is 8-ohms.

Stereo RCA Inputs/Outputs: The Russound P75 amplifier features two stereo analog RCA inputs (Line 1/Line 2) to connect up to two analog audio devices. There is also a stereo analog RCA output to send the amplifier's Line 2 input to another zone amplifier.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The P75 amplifier is fitted with eight binding post speaker terminals and can accommodate up to two pair of speakers. You can power "A" speaker only, "B" speaker only, or both "A & B" speakers. When driving a single pair of speakers the amplifier can handle 4-ohm speakers in Stereo mode, or a single 8-ohm speaker in Mono mode. When driving both "A & B" speakers the amplifier can handle a minimum of 8-ohm speakers. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire (16-12AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual)

Unswitched AC Outlet: The P75 amplifier has a built-in outlet on the back panel. This 120 VAC outlet provides 400W unswitched power for a device such as a small powered subwoofer. This switch provides power as long as the P75 is plugged into an outlet, whether or not the unit itself is powered on.

Protection Circuitry: The Russound P75 dual source power amplifier employs protection circuitry to safeguard against short circuits and over-heating.

  • Short Circuit Protection: Special circuitry has been designed into the amplifier to safeguard under a short-circuit condition. A faulty speaker can also cause a short circuit condition. If this fault condition occurs, turn off the amplifier and check speakers for short circuit conditions when appropriate.
  • Thermal Protection: The P75 amplifier is designed with special circuitry to safeguard the amplifier under a thermal overload condition. Thermal protection mode will only engage when the unit has been run at high volume for extended periods of time without adequate ventilation and/or when speaker impedances are below the minimum levels for the amplifier. In thermal protection mode the amplifier will automatically stop output. If this fault condition occurs, turn off the amplifier.

Mounting Options: The P75 amplifier can be placed on a shelf in an equipment rack, or on a table or cabinet. Make sure there is enough clearance around the amplifier for proper ventilation. The rear-panel should have approximately 5.125" of clearance, while the front-panel should have about 2.4375" of clearance. Both side of the amplifier should have around 0.9375" of clearance and the top should have 8.25" of clearance for proper ventilation.

This is only an amplifier. If the pre amp only has 5 channels, this will be of no use. 1050 is a pre/amp set up and doesn't need an additional amp. In any case, this particular amp is awful. If you want an affordable 2 channel amp for the onkyo one.

No. The unit has a relay inside that clicks back and forth between sources by sensing the signal. If the primary source has signal it will play. If the primary signal stops, and there is a secondary signal, the unit will sense the signal on the secondary input and switch to the secondary input. If both sources are running, the unit will only play the primary source.

If i want to run 4 speakers Mono, can i simply bridge the amp, then run all 4 speakers off the bridged speaker output? ie. group the speaker wire together and just connect to the mono connection?
[ lee  Jun 22, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
While the amp is bridgeable, it requires a minimum 8 Ohm impedance so, no, you would not be able to connect 4 speakers in parallel to the bridged channel. If the speakers are conventional 8 Ohm, the best option is to use the amp in stereo mode and connect the pairs to the A/B speaker outputs provided.
[ Ryan  Jun 29, 2017 ]  Staff
A
I only use it in the stereo mode. Works great. The manual lists doing the following for bridging. You need to select "Bridge mode" on the back. Connect Speaker wire (+) to the SPKR A Right (+) & Speaker wire (-) to the SPKR B Left (+). Keep load to 8 ohms total.

Q
I have this amp in my study connected to 2 stereo speakers (A) and a sub (B); the audio source is my desktop PC. The amp switches off when it doesn't detect any sound from the source. This would typically be ideal but extremely annoying when it happens while watching a video with a 3 or 5 sec timeframe during which there's no ongoing conversation or sound in the video. I played a movie and the amp kept switching off/on/off/on ... (you get the point). Is this typically, can the switch delay be extended, do I have a defective amp? Thanks!
[ Ife  Feb 10, 2017 ]
3 answers
A
Check the auto-on switch on the back of the amp. In the auto-on position it will turn the amp off whenever there is no signal. In the auto-off position the amp is turned on and off solely by the front power switch. This should cure your problem but of course you have lost the auto feature. I know of no way to change the delay built into the auto function. I have two of these amps installed on a large yacht driving outside ceiling speakers and have had no problems in two years but we do operate in manual. Hope this helps.
[ DWIGHT  Feb 11, 2017 ]
A
The P75 amplifier can be turned on manually or automatically by setting a switch on the back panel. For manual power on or off, press the Power button on the front panel. For automatic power on, set the switch to Auto On, and place the front panel power button in the "On" position. When music is sensed on either input RCA connector, the amplifier's signal sensing sends a command for it to power on. Once the signal ends, the amplifier turns off. Recommend you set power setting on back on unit to "manual."
[ Hugh  Feb 11, 2017 ]
A
I think there might be a slider switch on the back of the amp where you can select whether the unit automatically turns on/off by detecting a signal or just leave the unit on when the power switch is on.

You can connect any type of cable you wish. If you have a specific Monster cable in mind that has a specific connector, take a look at the back panel picture online.

Q
8 ohms. If I use a switch A as bridge mode with 160 watts can I use switch B as bridge mode as well to get 160 watts? What if I connect switch B to two individual speakers, can I get 60W each along with 160W bridge mode from switch A?

If you bridge the amp you'll get 160 watts into a single 8-ohm load. You can use an external switcher to alternate 160 watts x 1 between your A/B speakers, but you can't have the amp run in 2-channel output for your B speakers if it's bridged.

Q
I've been looking for an Auto-Power on Power Amp to provide the extra " juice" for the Rear Speakers( 6 and 7) and the B remote speakers ( through a Russound Switch Box) connected to my Onkyo TX-NR809 Receiver. What do you all think ?

There are no speaker inputs only RCA in. You will not be able to connect rear surround (or b speaker out) unless your Onkyo has RCA out for surround. You can hook remote speakers if your Onkyo has a zen 2 RCA Out.

It is a good amp and well priced. Just be aware that there are not separate volume controls for A and B, so you would just have to switch A and B on | off depending on what you want to listen to. Russound does make an in-wall volume controller that would allow you to separately control volumes of A and B.

Can I use this with a vizio soundbar?

I don't think so. A sound at powers its own speakers.

Q
Will this amp work as a subwoofer amp? Will it accept a LFE output from an audio receiver?

I don't think it is intended to drive the low frequencies associated with LFE, but, I haven't tried it. I would recommend looking for an amp that specifically says it is intended to amplify LFE or better yet, buy a powered subwoofer.

A
No, there are not any LFE inputs on this amp. I know that Crutchfield does have a Polk amp that includes this feature.

I'm a vinyl collector who has mono records, this amp has a bridge stereo and mono switch, will this serve my purpose of listening or is it used for the subwoofer?

Hello, unfortunately i am not sure what you are asking and/or how to respond about the switch you are referring too.. :-/ sorry i couldn't be of any help..

I think the switch is used to combine both A and B amps to drive a stereo speaker. Not to take a mono input and change it. You can read the users manual online at Crutchfield.

I think you would need an rca y-adapter to feed both L-R channels on the amp but it should work. It will amplify full range in mono.

Q
Will this amplifier work to run 4 single (MONO) speakers in different rooms or just 2 stereo zones? The description makes it sount like the MONO selection is for a single speaker load only.
[ Daniel  Mar 08, 2015 ]
1 answer
A
Hello Daniel, The mono is designed for sub woofers when more power is needed. When channels are bridged (bridging is explained in manual) it increases output. You can have more zones by using cable splitters. If your prefer mono, you can combine left and right channels (4 wires) to the same speaker. If you do choose mono, make sure to combine both red wires and both black wires before attaching to speaker post. Good luck with your system.
