Our take on the Rockford Fosgate P2D2-8

Cutaway view

Bulletproof bass

Engineers at Rockford Fosgate designed the P2D2-8 8" subwoofer to dish out the kind of powerful low end you crave in your ride. Its responsive paper cone is reinforced with the same Kevlar® fibers used in bulletproof vests so you get the best of both worlds — warm bass that's exceptionally hard-hitting. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

Made for heavy excursion

This P2 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out." Special venting keeps the copper-clad aluminum voice coils cool through heavy use for consistent bass performance over time.

The dual 2-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 1-ohm impedance to get maximum power output, or for 4-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P2D2-8 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 375 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Would recommend the Punch series over the basic subs. I was concerned that it wouldn't perform due to being fairly small in diameter but it went above and beyond. I had to modify the box to make the deep magnet fit but it was worth it.

Excellent value/sound!

Installed in custom ported enclosure, in my black and red resto mod 85 Corvette. Construction and design is fantastic! Sound quality is impressive for accuracy in music. Just be aware that the lower frequency response numbers come from the ported enclosure not the sealed.

Pros: Looks and performance.

Cons: Sealed enclosure performance was inadequate.

Nice subs

Tight bass. Very strong for the size

I decided to build an 8" sub as Ive never ran one. Built a sealed .42 cubic foot enclosure. They do add a fair amount of bass but im constantly wanting more. Good if you have very little room but mine didnt hit the low freq that a 12" does.

Pros: Nice in tight areas Quick response

Cons: Does not engulf the cabin with bass presence

Great sound for the price!

First set of 8's I've ever owned. Their so cute!Lol! I'm a big bass head so I wasn't sure what to expect, but not disappointed. These lil' subs hit some incredible low notes. Highly recommend these subs for anyone wanting a clean bass sound, but not to over powering.

Pros: Minimal air space required. Great bang for your $$$$

Cons: None

Great looking sub woofer but that's where it stops. Stiff cone when the sub woofer arrived.

Pros: Looks great, good price.

Cons: Due to stiff cone the sound quality is the worst I have ever experienced with a sub-woofer. I wasn't lucky enough to get the good subs like the other reviewers. No deep bass for me.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Enclosure Compatibility

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P2D2-8 is an 8-inch subwoofer with dual 2Ω voice coils. The sub features a StampCast steel frame, quick-release compression terminals, a Kevlar fiber reinforced paper cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 2Ω Voice Coils: The dual 2Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 1Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents a 4Ω load.

Steel Basket: The P2D2-8 subwoofer features a StampCast steel basket for added rigidity.

Compression Terminals: The P2D2-8 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P2D2-8 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle its rated power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is approximately 7/8 of an inch.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 0.23 cubic feet (from 0.2 to 0.3 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 0.65 cubic feet using one 2" diameter x 8" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 38.5 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 33 Hz).

I chose this speaker due to it's physical depth and optimum enclosure volume recommendations. Also, the power handling of the P2D2 is a bit higher than the p1s4 and should be better suited to match the 1200w 1-ohm Pioneer amp I purchased to power them (4 of these) [ Joshua  Jul 23, 2016 ]

It will be very tight. The Rockford Fosgate P2D2-8 have a cutout diameter requirement of 7 1/16". You will find this information, and more, by clicking the 'Details" tab on the woofer's main webpage. [ Ryan  Sep 27, 2018 ]  Staff
I have not yet built my enclosure for my P2D2-8's, but RF supplies optimum enclosure specs for both sealed and ported applications. You can download the manual from Crutchfields website within the product page. You'll have PLENTY of room to lay those out however you want in that truck. [ Joshua  Aug 17, 2016 ]
i used the smallest sealed Sound Ordinance box crutchfield sells. According to the subs specs, this box is slightly too big. I think it sounds just fine. These subs don't need much room in a box if its sealed. I bought this sub because it takes up very little space in my pickup truck. if i had a bit more room I would of went with a 10 inch. [ stephen  Aug 16, 2016 ]
This shouldn't effect the sub at all, I run mine in a 6" box and it's worked great for 6 months now [ Matt  Jun 13, 2016 ]
Hi. The one inch clearance should be fine however, if you are concerned, prior to installation, drill very small holes in the back of the box to aid in the air circulation. Space them out approximately one inch apart randomly. Around 8-10 holes should help air flow nicely. John [ JOHN  Jun 13, 2016 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
