About the Rockford Fosgate P2D4-8

Cutaway view

Bulletproof bass

Engineers at Rockford Fosgate designed the P2D4-8 8" subwoofer to dish out the kind of powerful low end you crave in your ride. Its responsive paper cone is reinforced with the same Kevlar® fibers used in bulletproof vests so you get the best of both worlds — warm bass that's exceptionally hard-hitting. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

Made for heavy excursion

This P2 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out." Special venting keeps the copper-clad aluminum voice coils cool through heavy use for consistent bass performance over time.

The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 2-ohm impedance to work with a mono sub amp, or for 8-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P2D4-8 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P2D4-8 is an 8-inch subwoofer with dual 4Ω voice coils. The sub features a StampCast steel frame, quick-release compression terminals, a Kevlar fiber reinforced paper cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: The dual 4Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 2Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Steel Basket: The P2D4-8 subwoofer features a StampCast steel basket for added rigidity.

Compression Terminals: The P2D4-8 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P2D4-8 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle its rated power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is approximately 7/8 of an inch.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 0.23 cubic feet (from 0.2 to 0.3 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 0.65 cubic feet using one 2" diameter x 8" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 38.5 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 33 Hz).

Q
Do I have to put this in a box?

A
I would suggest an enclosure unless you have a stock sub that you can replace with this one.

Honestly it would sound alot better if you put it in a box with a good amp. I have a 2013 Kia soul and it had an 8' but I never really put it in right and then went with 2 12s.

Not if you are mounting it in the rear dashboard of your car.

Q
is a Fosgate 500 1channel amp too powerful for P2D4-8?
[ Robert  Nov 17, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
To properly power the Rockford P2D4-8 subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 375 watts RMS at 2-ohms. For further help finding an appropriate amplifier for this sub model, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!

Q
is a Fosgate 500 1channel amp too powerful for this speaker?
[ Robert  Nov 17, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
It depends on the which model Rockford Fosgate 500 1 channel amp you are referring to. What you will want to look for is how many watts the amp is RMS and at how many ohms before you can tell weather or not it is compatible with this speaker. Respond with the amplifier model and I'll be able to give you a definitive answer.

Q
I want to hook up 4 rocksford p2 8 do i need 2 ohm or 4 ohm?
[ Isai  Jul 16, 2017 ]
3 answers
A
All depends on how you wore them but Crutchfield has wiring diagrams that will show you what ohm it runs for two of any speaker. Typically on a class D amp or single channel, it will be 2 ohm stable so two 4 ohm subs wired in parallel make a 2 ohm load. If the amp is 1 ohm stable you can do the same with 2 2 ohm subs to make 1 ohm.
[ Luke  Jul 20, 2017 ]
A
id go with the 4 ohm
[ Brandon  Jul 17, 2017 ]
A
Depends on what ohm load your amp can handle

Q
How to connect wires from amp to speaker ?
[ Rodney  Jan 21, 2015 ]
1 answer
A
We look that depends on a few things. How many speakers, what size amp, etc. You need to know how to wire for a certain ohm load. Since this is a 4 ohm speaker. Then you'll want to keep the ohms wired to 4. Easiest thing to do bud is call Crutchfield and they can give you the step by step for your specific equipment. That's what I did to be certain and the customer service was beyond fantastic. Also, Rock ford's website has links for diagrams of how to wire for certain ohm loads.
