About the Rockford Fosgate Punch P165-S

High-quality replacement speakers

Rockford Fosgate designed the Punch P165-S component speaker system as a high-grade replacement for your factory speakers. Each 6-1/2" woofer features a responsive polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround that'll stand up to hours of high-volume jams. The separate 1" dome tweeters provide clear, extended highs that can hold their own when the bass gets heavy.

Rockford Fosgate innovations

Take a closer look and you'll notice a couple of cool innovations. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the surround to the cone that yields up to 25% more cone area, for fuller sound and stronger performance. They build the crossover into the speaker frame so you don't have to find an area to mount a separate box. The slots around the frame eliminate the need to redrill screw holes when the factory holes are just a little bit off. Grilles are included.

Product Research

Features

Injection-Molded Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are mineral filled, injection-molded polypropylene. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: The butyl rubber surrounds dampen unwanted harmonic distortion while maintaining linear geometry under extreme weather conditions. This leads to less distortion, superior frequency response, and superior durability.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Woofer Size: Although the FlexFit basket allows a wide range of screw hole positions, it does not offer the standard three hole 6-1/2" pattern. Drilling new screw holes may be necessary.

PEI Dome Tweeters: The 1" dome tweeters are made of Poly-Ether-Imide (PEI); PEI is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The tweeters have multiple mounting configurations; choose flush or surface mount. The surface mount housing can be positioned at a 10° or 30° angle. Depending on the mount used, the installed dimensions are:

  Flush Surface 10° Surface 30°
Mounting Height 0.446" 1.075" 1.265"
Mounting Depth 0.911" Screw Depth Screw Depth
Frame Diameter 2.357" N/A N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.75" N/A N/A
Frame Width N/A 2.130" 2.130"
Frame Depth N/A 2.162" 2.140"

Crossovers: The high-pass crossovers are integrated into the baskets of the woofers. The slope is 12dB per octave.

Speaker Terminals: These speakers have 0.25" wide positive (+) terminals and 0.187" wide negative (-) terminals, which are too large for the vehicle-specific speaker harnesses Crutchfield supplies for many vehicle applications. We recommend that a pack of assorted female quick slides (item number 120FQS10PK, sold separately) be purchased and spliced to the harnesses to adapt them to the speaker terminals.

Customer Q&A

5 questions already asked

Q
is the middle supposed to be raised when you get them or after they are broken in?
[ DougB  Jun 08, 2015 ]

A
With almost any speaker there quality will improve after working them in a bit but these should have too large or drastic of a change
[ Rhett  Jun 18, 2015 ]
A
when you get them
[ Elizabeth  Jun 09, 2015 ]
A
the middle is raised in a cone shape
[ Elizabeth  Jun 09, 2015 ]
A
If by the middle you mean the center of the cone, no. The center part is a concave design.
[ John T.  Jun 09, 2015 ]
A
Doug what do u mean by the middle? I don't follow exactly? I'll need a little more info or a picture then I can help. R u talking about the dust cap over the cone?
[ PETER  Jun 09, 2015 ]
Q
should i get a small amp for these or would that not be necessary?
[ DougB  Jun 02, 2015 ]

A
a small amp would help but the sound was very good with my factory radio.
[ Daniel  Jun 05, 2015 ]
A
Not necessary, but you can if its your preference. I'm running two pair of these a pair of 6X9's and a pair of 12" P3's. Only amp is a mono for the subs. Sounds great.
[ Dwayne  Jun 04, 2015 ]
Q
Why does it say these require 1 12v battery?
[ Tejas  Dec 16, 2014 ]
2 answers
A
It requires your car battery to operate. Which is a 12v battery.
[ TIMOTHY  Dec 17, 2014 ]
A
I'm not sure why the instructions say that. I installed the system in my Subaru with no problems and I didn't have to use a 12v battery.
[ JONATHAN  Dec 17, 2014 ]
Q
How do you suggest wiring the tweeters into the system? Does it come with a crossover or run them in series with the speakers? Thanks
[ Bob916  May 08, 2014 ]
6 answers
A
The crossovers are built into the woofers so the wires for the tweeters plug right into the woofers
[ BRIAN  May 13, 2014 ]
A
Yes it comes ready to install with every thing you need.
[ Douglas  May 08, 2014 ]
A
They come with a passive crossover. I wired them in with the crossover in series. Tweeters that come as a component system work best and last longer if you wire them according to the manufacture's directions.
[ MAURICE  May 08, 2014 ]
A
The speakers have a crossover built into them. They don't allow as much freedom as a traditional component speaker but for the price they are very decent speakers.
[ SCOTT C  May 08, 2014 ]
A
On this model of speaker, the crossover is built into the 6.5" speaker. When you get them, you will see 2 sets of terminals on the 6.5". One set is for the vehicle wiring, the other set is for the tweeter. I loved this about these speakers, because it made wiring a breeze. You don't have to worry about mounting a separate crossover and all the extra wiring that goes along with it. Rockford even provides the extra wiring for the tweeter in the box. I love these speakers and would recommend them to anyone.
[ FRANK B  May 08, 2014 ]
A
Bob the main speaker has the crossover built into the base with the wiring terminals marker speaker and tweeter. Hope this helps.
[ PATRICK  May 08, 2014 ]
Q
Hi , any one buy these speakers for your 2010 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab ? if so where did you mount the seperate tweeters ? appreciate any feedback, thanks !

A
Best to install on the pillar or top of the door facing you ,or mount in the dash pointed toward the windshield ,that will be the best sound
[ gomezj22  Apr 28, 2014 ]
A
I had a 08 frontier and I fit the same size tweeter in the factory location. I took the old assembly out and made a bracket out of plexiglass glass and they fit like a glove. I installed the p 165, s in my girlfriend's 12 corolla They sound really good and are well built. They will need an amp to get the best sound out of them.
[ PHILLIP T  Dec 15, 2013 ]
A
Yes but for a Chevy Silverado. They sound great but maybe need some real tuning. If not it sounds like they are screaming at you without bass. But after the tuning they sound really great. Kenneth
