About the Rockford Fosgate PM100X1

Magic power pack

Rockford Fosgate's gamechanging PM100X1 package contains two seriously small, full-range mono amps, each one delivering 60 watts RMS to a speaker — that's more than twice the power of a typical factory radio or aftermarket receiver. Employing their patent-pending "FreeLoad" technology, each PM100X1 uses a receiver's output as its power source, so it doesn't need a power wire running to the battery (although you will have to run a ground wire).

New design

This revolutionary amp stores voltage from the receiver's output in a large power supply reservoir for boosting its output, allowing Rockford Fosgate to pack all that power in such a small chassis. Instead of having to find a spot for a larger 2-channel amp, you can mount these tiny amps just about anywhere you want, even behind the speakers.

Each amp comes ready to work with almost any radio or receiver — no complicated gain control adjustments are necessary. A selectable high-pass filter lets you tune the sound to fit your speakers. You'll also find an input impedance switch, which you can use to match the amp's input to the output of a receiver capable of driving 2-ohm loads.

Powersport and marine ready

A rubber switch cover prevents dirt and water from getting inside and doing any damage. With the cover in place, the amp carries an IPX6 water intrusion rating, which means it'll tolerate getting sprayed but not submerged. The amp's compact size (4" x 3") makes it perfect for powersports vehicles and boats, where space is precious.

Product Research

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate PM100X1K contains two separate PM100X1 full-range mono amplifiers, one for the left channel, and one for the right channel. These Punch Marine amps feature conformal-coated PCBs (printed circuit boards) and Element-Ready design that makes them perfect for mobile, motorsport, and marine applications. Rockford Fosgate's patented BTL Powered "FreeLoad" technology powers the amplifier without requiring a standard B+/Ground power connection. These tiny amplifiers only require a 4" x 3" footprint.

BTL Powered FreeLoad Technology: The PM100X1 does not require a power wire from the battery to power the amplifier. Audio signals contain an AC signal, and a DC offset voltage that the amplifier can use to store in its internal capacitors to produce higher output power when needed. This technology works with 2-ohm radios found in many premium systems, as well as typical 4-ohm radios. A 2-ohm/4-ohm input switch is provided on the amp to match to the output impedance of the connected radio. The amp uses the input signal to automatically turn the amp on and off.

Note: A power wire is supplied in case the output of the radio is not high enough to sufficiently power the amp.

Element Ready: This Rockford Fosgate Element Ready amplifier is designed to stand up to harsh environmental conditions, with protections against dust, UV rays, corrosion, and moisture. The amp features an extruded aluminum heat sink, stainless steel hardware, sealed motor structures, and UV inhibitors, to keep the amplifier performing day in and day out. The single-sided wiring port is sealed to protect it from water intrusion, and carries an IPX6 rating. The amp can be installed on motorcycles, ATVs, and boats without worry of failure due to exposure to the elements.

Power Output: The PM100X1 amplifier has a rated power output of 60 watts x 1 at 4 ohms (CEA-2006). The dynamic power ratings are 61 watts x 1 at 4 ohms, and 109 watts x 1 at 2 ohms.

Selectable Crossover: A selectable Butterworth high-pass crossover is provided to tailor the output to the size of the connected speaker. You can set the crossover frequency to 60Hz, 80Hz, or 100Hz via the 3-way switch on the side of the amp. The crossover has a slope of 12 dB/octave.

Protection Circuits: The PM100X1 amp has protection circuitry that will shut off the amplifier in case of short circuit, over-voltage, or excessive heat.

  • Frequency Response: 60Hz to 20kHz (+/- 1.0dB)
  • Total Harmonic Distortion (THD+N): <1.0% at 4 ohms or 2 ohms

Yep. It has a switch you can select 2 or 4.
[ ROBERT  Mar 13, 2022 ]
Yes they operate at 100 watts @2 ohms per amplifier/channel

[ Flavio  Mar 13, 2022 ]
There are 2 an 4 ohm switch on each amp yes they play well
[ KEVIN J  Mar 13, 2022 ]
What is the minimum input wattage? My factory deck puts out only 8 watts per channel. Will this even function?
[ Sean  Aug 14, 2021 ]

First I replaced the stock door speakers with JVC but not much improvement. Then I purchased a pair of the Fosgate PM100X1 for the door speakers in my 2016 Mazda MX5 Sport with the standard radio. No additional amplifier. They definitely improved the sound. Now I can hear the music with the top down. Crutchfield tech support has been fantastic too.
[ STEVEN  Aug 14, 2021 ]
Can these be used to in place of the OEM Monsoon Amp in my 2002 Pontiac Firebird? I have replaced the head unit with a Kenwood and the speakers have been replaced with ones that are the same ohms as the original speakers. Since these are speaker level input, would these not work as a viable replacement for the anemic Monsoon amp?
[ Dwain  Apr 20, 2021 ]

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

I am replacing a Jeep console mono subwoofer. Can I purchase just one?
[ Andru  Jan 08, 2021 ]
1 answer
I don't believe so. They come as a pair. Plus, these are not designed for that purpose. They are high passed and use the low frequency energy to create their power.
[ JOHN  Jan 08, 2021 ]
If you car is equipped with ANC, do you need to disable that when you use these amps?
[ Michael  Nov 25, 2020 ]
1 answer
Hi I have these hooked up to a stock radio with aftermarket front speakers and have them mounted in the doors .They work great and sound good .But as far as an ANC everything I have read about it says its best to disable. I hope this helps
[ THOMAS  Nov 25, 2020 ]
I already have an Infinity component set up. would the crossovers from that set up be redundant with these amps or would they still be needed?
[ Cheyne  Nov 19, 2020 ]
1 answer
I am not sure if I understand your question but if you currently have crossovers no additional ones would be needed. The crossovers go between the amp and speakers; allowing you to ger the desired sound out of each speaker connected. I hope this helps.
[ Mark Lenon  Nov 20, 2020 ]
Can they support a 1 ohm speaker?
[ I  Sep 03, 2020 ]
1 answer
The Rockford Fosgate PM100X1 amps are not compatible with a 1ohm load. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, if you would like to look into other amplifiers that are 1ohm stable.

I need amps to replace the single amps in a modified Bose sound system, these guys are line leval inputs. I need rca level inputs?, is there an adapter that would work for this? Or should I be looking for a different unit?
[ Mxcobra  Aug 11, 2020 ]

You need to find another option. These are made to crossover @ a minimum of 60hz. and use the electrical energy from the signal under that to charge the capacitors.
[ JOHN  Aug 11, 2020 ]
You would need a different unit. These take their power from the speaker line inputs, add a ground and you're done. You should look into the RF PBR series if you're looking for a small amp with good power
[ Emmanuel  Aug 11, 2020 ]
will these work at low volume?. meaning will they be under powered and turn off at low volume?
[ charlie  Oct 03, 2019 ]
1 answer
Yes they work at low volume. They are always on. They basically just work like a capacitor. They can go really loud with lots of dynamics. A word of advice make sure you have a good ground for them.
[ Jason  Oct 03, 2019 ]
Has anyone experienced amplifier whine as a result of installing these? Trying to track down an issue in my car...
[ Jay  Jul 27, 2019 ]
1 answer
It's the ground. These need to have better than good grounds. Mine did the same thing yours are doing. I thought I was going to go crazy. At first I had installed them in the doors. Paint on the door hinges was the issue. After searching and tearing the car apart I found a place where i could ground to the chassis and that did the trick. RF told me to ground them all in the same place if possible and I was able to ground a pair together. Now they sound great. Good Luck
[ Jason  Jul 27, 2019 ]
Can the high pass crossover be defeated?
[ a  Feb 23, 2019 ]
1 answer
No. The energy from the lower frequencies is what powers the amplifier. If you were to defeat it, there would be no amplification.
[ KEVIN  Feb 24, 2019 ]
Will these ones work on my ford f-150 with sony audio??
[ Milio  Oct 04, 2018 ]
1 answer
Potentially, yes. You'll want some aftermarket speakers that are capable of handling the additional wattage but you should be able to provide audio into the PM100X1 from your stock system. What is the maximum input wattage these units can handle?
[ don  Feb 20, 2017 ]
1 answer
Sorry for the delayed response. There is no "maximum input wattage" rating. If the stereo's output somehow exceeds 60 watts RMS at 4 Ohms, the PM100x1 would be redundant so, they will work for any wattage output you may want to use them with. I hope that helps. My Bio:
