A good value 9-channel AVR.
Marc from San Diego, CA on 3/10/2023
If you do not need pre-amp outputs, this is the receiver to get for 3D surround! 7.1.2 or 5.1.4 for $1K, yes please. Review done. Okay, here's more details... As of March 2023, it was $600 less than comparable receivers (like its brother Onkyo TX-RZ50) - the big difference being it has no pre-amp outputs and does 9-channel surround processing instead of 11-channel. Music playback is quite good when sent through a digital path like DLNA or Bluetooth, so that the receiver converts to analog internally; it makes effective use of the subwoofer. Through an analog input like CD, music is okay but the low frequencies (that make subs happy) suffer. No screensaver. And all the other stuff on the product page, no need to repeat the specs here. I have to leave off a star because: 1) Bluetooth does not sync with the source. Fine for just audio, but unusable for video. There is a full second or more delay! That's not due to latency in the Bluetooth codec, it's just a bad, lazy implementation. Say, when watching video on a laptop, Bluetooth audio to the receiver. (To be clear, not when playing an input source like Blu-ray, no delay there.) 2) The remote is a bit lame. No universal TV control. No backlight. Volume on the right side (left side volume is pretty standard on remotes). Feels not-so-substantial. See included pic (TV remote on left for comparison). So there's room for improvement. But at this price, still a strong recommendation.
Pros: Excellent value. Music playback sounds good.
Cons: Poor remote. Awful Bluetooth delay.

Sounds good so far. Haven't had a chance to fully explore all the options, though. The zones were a little hard to figure out, and I ended up blowing a set of speakers as a result. My fault for having the volume maxed out when I finally did get one of the zones working. But if it were more intuitive to set up, maybe that wouldn't have happened? Expensive mistake.

Best 9.2 Home Theatre System I could find for the price and then it got better with it being on sale at Crutchfield. Also, speaking to Crutchfield staff helped a lot. I love that the I could choose my Klipsch Reference speakers in the setup menu and the system would adjust its frequencies for the best sound and to protect them.
Pros: Great system!
Cons: A little difficult to setup and that is even before working with Dirac Live 3, which I installed onto my laptop (rather than onto my phone). It took a bit of internet searching for decent setup videos. The same goes for Durac Live 3 videos.

Peter from Evans, GA on 2/20/2023
Sounds great when you're finally listening to something, but getting there is not smooth and navigating around is slow. I spent 40 hrs trying to run Dirac , 3 calls to Crutchfield (they were very knowledgeable, but could not get to the bottom of it) Onkyo's phone system was down for a week, email correspondence with Onkyo was unfruitful. Finally, I received an email from Onkyo saying that Dirac's server was down, a small tidbit that they could've delivered a week earlier and saved me from destroying all my settings on all my equipment that I could get my hands on. I will probably be mentally unstable for the foreseeable future . If you want to listen to headphones on Bluetooth, you must navigate deep into the settings and then navigate back out to listen and then go back in again to turn it off. If you want to use zone 2 good luck knowing where your volume set because it doesn't display anywhere And doesn't display what source you're using on zone 2 either ,it just sort of goes on and on like this as if the software engineers never exactly use the unit themselves, they just make it possible for it to happen, and not in a very happy way. Couldn't they just steal someone from Apple ? The control app is more of the same. My Onkyo from 15 years years ago was easier to navigate, but this one sounds much better. That said 5 stars for Crutchfield
Pros: Crutchfield
Cons: Onkyo

Sound is fantastic. Big improvement over my Onkyo TX-NR646 which I loved. Wanted to upgrade to 9.2 speakers and Dirac. Dirac wouldn't work at first. Kept giving me a network connection error. Read similar problem with other owners. Seems to be caused by Onkyo servers. Used the Accueq and that was big improvement over previous versions. After a week tried Dirac again and it worked. Wow, sound really came alive. Dirac live is a must. Highly recommend this receiver.

After 1 week the receiver would not display on television. It kept saying Please Wait. Crutchfield very good about it and told me to return it. They suggested a Marantz which was the same money but only a 7.1 which was fine Onkyo support non existent Dirac live very spotty. It worked once then it would keep dropping network. Lots of people complaining about it

Failed in less than 6 months
Peter from MERRITT ISLAND, FL on 10/7/2022
I bought this AVR in April and was largely happy with the purchase. The sound was good although the network interface and menu was a bit klunky compared to my last AVR. About 2 months ago, I noticed a crackling sound in the left front speaker (like a loose connection). It was intermittent at first but is now there all the time, even with every input disconnected. I have tried swapping out the speaker and speaker cables, but no change. So now I have to send it back under warranty. I am gutted that I spent this much money for something that is now unusable after less than 6 months. It was the first Onkyo product I have purchased and will probably be my last.

Great AVR. Great sound from Dolby ATMOS down to Dolby Surr, as well as great decoding of DTS functions. All around best value. Using ROKU Ultra for streaming, (TVs ARC doesn't support ATMOS), SONY Blu-Ray, and cable STB. Nicest feature is allowing my 7.1 system to be feed with ATMOS when available, without adding additional speakers. AND As usual Crutchfield support is over the top!
Pros: FULLY Featured as adversity

Onkyo TX-NR7100 = AWESOME
Jim from Madison NC on 8/11/2022
First let me say Diane was great help when I bought the Onkyo . She took care of my sell fast all while answering my questions. Thanks Diane. The Onkyo receiver works and sounds very good. Better than I expected for the low price I paid. Crutchfield was dead on with their description of this receiver when they said ( looks like they've hit a home run with the TX-NR7100 ). They sure did. The Atmos speakers I added in work wonders for movies. I'm running it as a 7.1.2 and let me say it is just AWESOME ! I was expecting some real movie theater experience and I got it. The WIFI and Bluetooth pick up signal very very good, so streaming music and and controlling it are not an issue. I have not figured out all the bells and whistles on it yet, there are so many. I love music playing through it , not just the movies. This is my first Onkyo product ( always been a Yamaha fan) If the Onkyo last as long as my last Yamaha did I'll be one happy camper.
Pros: Great sound, Great picture going through, easy set up, Looks good, WIFI and Bluetooth work very well , Has tons of settings and use.

Home system recivery
James from Waianae, HI on 7/30/2022
I chose this Onkyo receiver to replace a Sony, and what a difference it made to my home entertainment experience. The Onkyo easily linked my tv, Apple TV, Amazon fire, Blu-ray, spectrum cable box and Bose surround speakers. I can control my viewing and listening now with just the cable remote. The (admittedly aging) Sony receiver would frequently lose its link to all of those elements and the only recourse was to restart the receiver. No more. And thank you, Crutchfield, for the quick delivery to my home in Hawaii.
Pros: Smart Onkyo easily linked all my entertainment elements, including my Bluetooth headphones.
Cons: A bit pricey, but worth it.

Sound Quality
William from Virginia Beach, VA on 7/27/2022
This TX-NR7100 replaced a Integra 50.4 that I've had for the past 10 years. Although it has less power, the Onkyo's sound is comperable to the Integra. I just added Atmos add-on speakers and it made a world of difference. Even without Atmos enabled content, the sound is fuller and more robust. I've only had this receiver for a little more than a week so I haven't explored all the "bells and whistles." This receiver is a good buy solely because of its sound quality. I think I made the right decision in buying the TX-NR7100.

I've really enjoyed Onkyo over the years and the AVR is doing the trick. I did buy this as a second choice admitted ( still no RZ-50s to be found). The Dirac is easy to use and works amazingly. The Onkyo app is a bit lacking with regards to speediness and usability. If this had pre outs it would be five stars for me!
Pros: It works!
Cons: App is a bit temperamental, lacking pre outs.

Charles from Irving, TX on 4/12/2022
So I've owned 2 Onkyo receivers previously and needed to upgrade to the new 4k-8k technology and went with a Marantz, thinking I was upgrading to a higher tier of quality. Well, big mistake. In a nutshell the movies sounded great but the music, not so much. Returned it (hassle free, thank you Crutchfield) and went back home to this new Onkyo. Oh my! I got that beautiful full punch sound back, full control of tone and subwoofer control back that was bizarrely missing on the Marantz. AND the movies sound even better, amazing in fact. I couldn't be happier. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

Dirac is impressive!
Crutchfield customer from Fulshear , TX on 12/27/2021
This receiver replaced an old Integra DTR 30.4 and it's a noticeable improvement. The Dirac room correction especially is a step up over the Audyssey 2EQ the old receiver had, where even the simple 3 point calibration produced a very cohesive front stage across my mismatched front and center channels. The audio quality sounds perfectly fine, and the user interface is good, just like every other Onkyo receiver I've used. I initially had an issue with my Vizio PQ65H1 where the receiver output static over HDMI 2.1, but a firmware update fixed that issue quickly. I haven't had the opportunity to test the other killer feature of this receiver, functioning VRR passthrough, but based on other reviews it seems to be working great. A couple of minor complaints net this 4 stars instead of five. IMO it's a bit expensive to not have any main channel pre-outs. Even a front left/right pre-out would be fantastic and potentially allow for 11 channel processing. My other quibble is with the remote. It's a noticeable downgrade over my old receiver's remote with much less affirmative buttons. Overall, it's a great receiver and well worth considering over other receivers in the price bracket.
Pros: Dirac at mainstream pricing 9 channel amplification Working VRR
Cons: Remote is mediocre No pre-outs except subwoofers

Happy with new functionality and great sound
Crutchfield customer from Mantua, OH on 12/19/2021
The sound of the NR7100 is fantastic! General installation was reasonably easy for such a piece of equipment. The downloadable manual isn't as clear as it could be, but seems to be complete. This system replaced a very old home theater system, and some of the component settings were in conflict with how the Onkyo worked. That took a few days to work through all of those. It seems like the processor is a little bit slow, judging by how long it takes to switch sources, or respond to changes in settings, like switch from a streaming device to cable TV, but maybe that's the norm on a system with so much more functionality than what it replaced.

Flynn from North Pole, AK on 12/11/2021
When I got this receiver and tried to hook it up to my PC and do 4K120 I wasn't happy. It would not pass from PC to Receiver to TV. The PC passed 4K120 no problem when hooked straight to the TV with the same cables. So the cables didn't seem to be the issue. Emailed Onkyo twice about it asking for help only to get 0 response. Left a bad review about the whole experience as I was not happy that I just spent $1100 specifically for the HDMI 2.1 featureset and it did not work. Crutchfield saw my review and set up a call between me and Onkyo. After working with Onkyo for over an hour on the Phone, we hadn't gotten too far, until I did something by accident and it started working. The fix? The cable going between the TV and the receiver was bad. Despite working when hooked from TV to PC. *Face slap* I confirmed this by going into the hidden Onkyo Menu by holding Tone + pressing Return. To check the HDMI cable, put it into whatever port you're wanting to use on the back and then plug the other end into the Sub out. Then make sure you're on that input. Then press and hold Tone and press return. Navigate down to HDMI diagnosis and press enter, then perform the cable test. It will start with 480P and end at 8K60. I ended up using this to test all my HDMI cables and just the one that was running between my AVR and TV failed. This menu option is extremely helpful and I wish it wasn't buried and hidden. Now as for the receiver itself, I love the sound! Its a definite improvement over my previous TSR-700. The only complaint I have really is the DIRAC was quite fussy to set up. It kept erroring out when it came to trying to set it up. I went with the quick setup and it kept failing, it was either too loud or too quiet. I believe I ended up setting the volume to 30 and the gain in the app to -5 and it finally was able to complete the test.
Pros: Sounds Fantastic!
