About the Onkyo TA-RW255
The Onkyo TA-RW255 dual cassette deck keeps things simple, whether you're dubbing cassette tapes, or just playing them. The deck offers dual-well auto-reverse playback, and auto-reverse recording on deck B. It also detects the type of cassette loaded and automatically adjusts bias, equalization, and sensitivity for the best possible recording with that specific tape. Dolby B and C help reduce unwanted tape hiss for cleaner sound reproduction. The cassette deck also lets you "relay play" two tapes for four sides of nonstop music.

Onkyo TA-RW255 reviews
This purchase replaced an Onkyo TA-RW490 purchased in 1990. The 490 was a heavy, well-made piece of equipment. This TA-RW 255 is lighter but the audio reproduction is superior. This is the quality I expect of Onkyo and they do not let me down! Thanks to both Onkyo and Crutchfield! Crutchfield delivered quickly, and overall, I'm extremely impressed.

Yes, audio tape players are obsolescent, but if you are going to make one, at least make it at a Satisfactory level of quality and features. The RW255 records in only 1 well. Features such as Reverse mode, and counter, must be reset every time it is turned on. Only 1 counter display (A,B) has to do for both decks, and you must reset it manually when auto reverse kicks to the next deck. It does not retain the display settings of where it was when turned off, they have to be reset again. Since none of the above faults help the user, I assume the design engineers were trying to save pennies. They may have saved pennies, but I would have paid dollars more to get the formerly standard features now missing.

The reason I bought this unit was because I still have great audio cassettes I enjoy listening to; and, it was the most compact double cassette deck I could find, as it had to fit into a small stereo component cabinet--it did fit nicely into my cabinet, which is the best thing I can say about this unit. The sound quality is not very good (even with a great amplifier and magnificent speakers), and it has very few features (e.g., no pause button, no headphones plug, etc.). [I am comparing the sound to my JVC TD-W354 audio double cassette deck which I still use in another stereo set-up at my office; that unit is much larger and has great sound reproduction.] Finally, what I really hate about this deck, is that every time I press the play or stop buttons (on either side), it makes a very loud annoying clunking sound. So, unless you need a really small deck, get something else.
