Awesome stereo sound

If you're looking for hi-fi sound from a simple stereo setup, the Onkyo TX-8220 is a great choice. Its discrete amplifiers, massive transformer, and customized capacitors deliver ample power with low distortion to up to two pairs of speakers.

Connect up to five audio components, and take advantage of built-in Bluetooth to stream music wirelessly from your compatible mobile device. The receiver remembers up to eight Bluetooth-enabled devices, so family and friends can share their music too.

Music in different rooms

Playback from such a capable music receiver shouldn't be confined to just one room, so the TX-8220 gives you the ability to spread your music through different parts of the house. A/B speaker connections mean you can add a second pair of speakers in another room or outdoor area. Or use the line out connection to connect a power amp and speakers in a different room.

Very simple to set up. Setting up my iPad to broadcast music through the receiver was easy and Bluetooth connection seemed reliable. That is all I have tried so far. I just needed a basic receiver with very few features. This receiver replaced an '80s Onkyo receiver I have had since college.

Great Receiver

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A perfect receiver for simple, 2-channel fun. This is my first Onkyo and I wanted something simple, for music. I paired this receiver with Klipsch RP-600M bookshelf speakers for a small bedroom, converted into a small home office. A 40 year old Marantz Turntable hooked right up and some old vinyl came back to life. A 20 year old Kenwood 200-disc changer plugged easy with the coaxial input and the Blue Tooth is awesome. Pairing both an iPhone 6 and iPad mini in seconds, I have the entire iTunes library at my fingertips tips, from anywhere in our condo. For $200 you can't go wrong with this little jewel. An easy remote with simple bass and treble controls. You can also use the EQ feature within the General settings on your phone or tablet, to change sound settings. 5 stars all the way!!!

Pros: Simple, 2-channel, easy set up, blue tooth, phono connection with ground, real speaker connecting post.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was pleasantly surprised with this receiver. I has the inputs I need and nothing fancy that I don't need. My 35 year old Harmon Kardon unit finally gave up (capacitor failure) and I just didn't feeling like fixing it. So, I first bought a new HK receiver. It sent it back after a week due to substandard sound, too many bells and whistles and a very confusing remote control. I then did some research and found this receiver. It is not high powered but has all the guts that I need in my family room. It is also priced right. I like that the bass is centered around 100Hz. My old HK385i was centered around 50Hz. That made for some annoying sub-sonic rumble while playing vinyl. This Onkyo does not have that issue. My vinyl sounds great. I like that it has an optical input for the TV and an easy to use remote. I recommend this receiver for a no-frills audio experience.

Pros: easy to hook up good sound easy to use remote good price has phono and optical inputs useful tone controls

Cons: small fonts on the front panel lettering

Just an outstanding receiver. Great sound by far than other new receivers I have listened to. I purchased this receiver to replace my aging Kenwood KR 900G that I purchased many years ago while serving in the Navy. It was an excellent replacement, and for an outstanding price as well. Thank you Crutchfield.

The Onkkyo TX-83220 certainly fulfills my "old school" needs for a basic receiver to power my vintage 1974 large Advent speakers! No problem so far, only pleasure. However, should I ever have an issue or question, I feel that Crutchfield will have my back! Great product reviews and descriptions, fair pricing, and fast free shipping. What else can I say...You folks rock!

Michael J. Caldare from Cerritos, CA on 7/10/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

FM Stereo sounds really super. AM antenna is some what a problem to adjust for "best" reception. My previous Onkyo Receiver was a Model TX-8211(B) it had several really great features deleted from the TX-8220: (1) two 115V AC outlets on rear panel, (2) RI connector when connected to other Onkyo units so equipped allowed use of a single remote control, (3) The binding posts for speaker connections are poor substitute for the terminals provided on the TX-8211(B), (4) the terminals for the AM antenna connection are very poor (extremely difficult to use). (5) there is no mention of this unit getting hot in the manual with a 3 inch clearance above the unit and11/2 inch below the temperature on the top center rises to 112 F after 15 minutes of operation! The bluetooth feature is a plus as well as subwoofer connection. MY previous Onkyo lasted 151/2 years

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Would have given the receiver five stars overall but I don't like the volume control (no physical start or stop point on the dial control) and the balance control does not completely cut off the output (one channel on 10 but sound is still audible from the other). Other than those two things, the receiver is great. Easy controls, clean layout and good sound. It does the job and the price is great. Crutchfield rep was great, too.

Pros: Sound, layout, price

Cons: volume and balance controls

I needed a decent receiver to play my music from my IPHONE on my stereo system via bluetooth. This was recommended and it serves my purpose just fine. All my other connections, CD and phono also work well. Th useful remote is another plus.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use it in my small music room to practice my bass with. It sounds good and the bluetooth feature is nice. A subwoofer connection was the final selling point for me. Very good receiver for the money.

Pros: Good price, bluetooth and subwoofer.

Cons: None.

All the receiver that I need.

Allen from Crawfordsville, IN on 2/20/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is very nice and meets my needs. Set-up is easy. As noted in another review, it isn't overpowered but, perhaps, my hearing will decline more slowly as a result! It has plenty of power for my living room, however. I'm quite satisfied with it.

Pros: Radio sensitivity is better than the one it replaced. Remote makes it convenient to operate and bluetooth is easy to set up.

Cons: Not overpowered but enough for my living room.

Works OK

Kurt from Angleton, TX on 2/18/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to replace a Sherwood receiver that went wonky. Not quite the same tone, but serves the purpose. Switchable A/B speaker is a must for a center channel bass. Works good as a replacement in the back music room. 45W x 2 is OK, but slightly lacks the headroom.

Pros: Good for the price. Lots of input options, including BlueTooth, a big surprise plus. Real speaker connectors!

Cons: Cannot control the A/B speakers or add a preset station from the remote.

Exactly what I wanted.

Alan from Silver Spring, MD on 2/16/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was exactly what I needed. I wanted to a simple hi-fi stereo receiver that I could use with both modern inputs (bluetooth) and a turntable. Also, I have a pair of 4 ohm speakers that I might decide to use with this receiver. So having a receiver capable of handling 4 ohms speakers was important.

Pros: Good sound quality, bluetooth, speaker binding posts as opposed to clips, phono preamp, and simple & easy to use controls and remote.

Cons: Limit to its volume, but more than enough decibels for most standard-size rooms.

Features

High-Current Discrete Amplification: The Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver utilizes high-current discrete amplifiers, a massive EI transformer, and customized capacitors to deliver ample driving power with low distortion. Onkyo's high-current low-impedance WRAT design uses a massive EI transformer to drive your speakers accurately, even under heavy loads. High current amplification grips the speaker cones for more accurate control, restoring vitality and detail to music. Non-phase-shift circuitry, meanwhile, clearly focuses the audio image.

192kHz/24-Bit DAC (PCM1754): The Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver utilizes a 192kHz/24-Bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) from Texas Instruments (TI) for excellent signal-to-noise (S/N) and low-noise performance - so your music sounds clear, full of detail, and natural.

Tone Controls + Direct Mode: Bass (100Hz), Treble (10kHz), and Balance controls are useful for adjusting the tone characteristics of your music for satisfying the response with practically any type of speaker. These carefully designed tone circuits let you personalize sound to your taste with no perceived loss in audio quality. You can also select Direct mode, which bypasses the Tone control circuits for the purest sound possible as the artist intended.

Analog (Including Phono) & Digital Inputs: The Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver is outfitted with both analog & digital audio inputs. There are five stereo RCA analog audio inputs (including a MM Phono input with ground terminal). There are two digital audio inputs - one optical (toslink) digital input and one coaxial (RCA) digital input. The digital inputs support 2ch PCM only (not compatible with  Dolby Digital/DTS or other multichannel audio formats).

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: Built-in Bluetooth 4.2 with support for A2DP allows you to wirelessly stream your music library, music apps, podcasts, audiobooks, and other audio content on your Bluetooth source device (such as your smartphone, tablet, or laptop) to the Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver. The unit supports SBC and AAC Bluetooth audio codecs. You'll continue to use your Bluetooth source device to control playback and search functions, as well as view song/artist information. You can pair up to 8 devices, but only one can be connected and played back at a time. Once paired, the TX-8220 will automatically connect with the last device connected when in range (approximately 32'). You can also set the receiver to automatically switch to the Bluetooth source input when a wireless Bluetooth connection is made.

AM/FM Tuner: With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favorite stations as presets for quick selection. You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite FM/AM radio stations as presets. You can even register a custom name (up to 8 characters) for each preset.

A/B Speaker Outputs: The TX-8220 features two sets of binding-post speaker terminals enabling connection of two pairs of speakers. The receiver is designed to drive either a single pair of speakers rated at 4-16, or two pairs of 8-16 speakers, allowing you to enjoy the same audio source in two rooms at once, or to easily switch between two sets of speakers. The binding-post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Line-Level Out & Sub Pre-Out:  The Onkyo TX-8220 is equipped with a stereo RCA line-level output for connecting a recording device. It also features a mono-RCA subwoofer pre-out for connecting a powered subwoofer. The subwoofer pre-out is full-range, so you will need a powered sub with a built-in low pass crossover.

Headphone Jack: A front-panel 1/4" headphone jack allows you to connect a set of  headphones for private listening. Once a set of headphones are connected, the stereo receiver's A/B speaker outputs are disabled.

Remote Control: The Onkyo TX-8220 comes with an IR remote for wireless operation of the stereo receiver. The remote is not designed to operate other audio equipment and will not control connected Bluetooth source devices.

Front-Panel LCD: The Onkyo receiver features a front-panel LCD that indicates Source Input, Station Number, Volume Level, and Menu Selection. The front-panel LCD will not display song/artist/album info from connected Bluetooth source devices. You can adjust the brightness of the display in 3-steps. There is no on-screen menu.

Sleep Timer & Auto Standby: You can set the receiver to enter Standby mode automatically when the specified time (10-90 minutes) elapses. The stereo receiver can also be set to automatically enter Standby mode after 20 minutes of inactivity without any audio input signal.

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

This unit is the closest to my original Marantz receiver. Wanted all the exact same features & this fits the bill! [ Jenny  Dec 03, 2018 ]
goes well with other Onkyo components Bluetooth compatible a plus [ JIMMIE  Nov 28, 2018 ]
I'm an audio-video design consultant. I need something simple for listening and for plugging in and testing components in my home office. The TX-8220 has plenty of power on-board plus pre-amp output to route signal to a component power amp when I need to. And it looks to be very simple to operate, and has no additional "creature feature" stuff that would add complexity that I don't need. Onkyo has been a very reliable brand over the years; I expect nothing less from this offering. [ DAVID  Nov 28, 2018 ]
I have owned Onkyo equipment in the past and I have been highly satisfied. After comparing several comparable models, I though this model had the right combination of the features I wanted for a reasonable price. [ Daniel  Nov 23, 2018 ]
I choose this because i wanted a stereo receiver with bluetooth conectivity and sub-woofer output. [ melvin  Nov 18, 2018 ]
Very decent price, and I needed both a subwoofer input as well as a dedicated phonograph in. Based on the reviews, I couldn't resist [ Brian  Nov 04, 2018 ]
I chose this product because it offers the inputs I need (optical, phonograph, and Bluetooth) at a reasonable price. [ MATT  Oct 15, 2018 ]
I explained to Levi that I was searching for a basic unit with not too many features, but would get the job done right. Levi gave me his honest opinion and I trust he got it right. [ Alexia  Oct 05, 2018 ]
Needed inexpensive stereo receiver. Like the speaker binding posts rather than spring clips, Bluetooth, and digital audio. [ Tom  Sep 21, 2018 ]
I recently moved and found my old albums. New Audio Technica turntable acquired only to discover my old Onkyo receiver was not working. Did my research and found this to be just what I needed. I will have the flexibility to stream via Bluetooth but anticipate just listening to my old vinyl via a pair of tried and true PSB speakers. [ George  Aug 29, 2018 ]
I want good sound for my home gym. I had been using an older (bought in 1990) Onkyo receiver with an Onkyo CD player or an Esinkin Bluetooth adapter. Lightning got my receiver and Bluetooth adapter, so this should be a good replacement. I hope to get as many years of use from this receiver. And, I will be using a surge protector! [ DR SCOTT  Jul 24, 2018 ]
The Crutchfield site offered a very helpful method to compare various models with similar features. That, plus the good experience we've had with Crutchfield in the past led us to this purchase here as opposed to many other internet options. [ HOWARD G  Jul 18, 2018 ]
I chose this model because of the ability to handle 4 ohm speakers. [ Steven  Jun 16, 2018 ]
Wanted a 2ch receiver with bluetooth for the patio and this looked like the best choice for the money. Have had good success over the years with Onkyo. [ MARTIN L  Apr 20, 2018 ]
I picked this item mainly because it has a Phono input and also a coaxial input [ Michael  Apr 17, 2018 ]
Receiver for outdoor stereo system "died" - needed a replacement with preamp outputs [ Michael  Apr 14, 2018 ]
It fit my needs for a small den: phono input, subwoofer input, inputs for a two channel stereo system without the extra frills which I don't need. Exactly what I was looking for. [ David  Apr 02, 2018 ]
Good value for a unit with Bluetooth streaming and a sub woofer connection [ Kenneth  Mar 27, 2018 ]
Bluetooth was a must. Would have preferred higher output power, but in the end THD and frequency range were more important. Also like the built in preamp for phono. [ James  Mar 03, 2018 ]
I was looking for a decent quality basic 2 channel receiver with Bluetooth and a turntable preamp and sub out. This receiver fit my needs. [ LISA  Dec 30, 2017 ]
Needed a GOOD, USER FRIENDLY, RECEIVER that I could use with ALL my stereo equipment. [ Philip  Dec 15, 2017 ]
This receiver has the features I need at a price point I can afford. Thanks again Crutchfield! [ Kent  Dec 13, 2017 ]

I really don't understand the question, with the information you provided. what are the input signal requirements power and frequency of your speakers what is the output power and frequency of the onkyo, define "push" in terms of power and frequency. Lord Kelvin stated: "Measurement is the basis of all knowledge." (circa 1720) [ MICHAEL J.  Dec 04, 2018 ]
How on earth should I know [ edmund  Dec 04, 2018 ]
The published specs only give RMS power output at 6 and 8 ohms (85 and 45 watts respectively). They do give IEC60268 short-term maximum output power at 3, 4 and 8 ohms ( 140, 120, and 80 W). There is no cooling fan, but, at least as I use it, it does not seem to become very hot. [ Alvin  Nov 30, 2018 ]
While the Onkyo is stable down to 4 Ohms on each of it's channels, they do not provide a different wattage rating when presented with the lower impedance. It does not have built-in cooling fans. [ Ryan  Nov 28, 2018 ]  Staff
