So happy with this receiver
David from Mineral ridge on 3/21/2023
I've had this receiver in my wishlist for a year . I jumped on it when the price dropped. After Crutchfield advisors answered questions about eARC syncing with my new Sony TV, and a few settings, the sound snd picture are amazing . I replaced a 6 year old Denon 1100w that served me well . Completed Dirac and there is a noticeable improvement in all the sound fields.
Pros: Sound, setup easy . Bid picture and sound improvements
Cons: Cheap remote , and no paper manual . Wouldn't fit in my cabinet

Dirac Live sounds incredible. I marvel at the clarity provided. My current thinking is that I don't need a power amplifier for stereo listening. That's a great product endorsement.
Pros: - Sound quality - Feature set - Adequate power - Ease of setup
Cons: -The need to use a smartphone for some functions

I'm definitely satisfied and there's a big difference between my Onkyo. To 646 and the new RCZ50 it's like night and day I hear the surround better I hear the quality of music better and there's just so much richer and enjoyment of listening and that Dirac is so much fun to play with and I still learning. Oh, and it links up directly with my television and I'm happy with the quality an the finish on this receiver.
Pros: The power the performance, the technology the finish are all on point.
Cons: I haven't found one yet maybe the not being able to adjust my dual subwoofer "but it not a noticeable difference yet I am still playing with it.

Happy with RZ50 Choice
Charlie from Marietta, GA on 2/27/2023
TX-RZ50 was an upgrade for me. Old system was TX-NR807 with DefTech Mythos Gems as fronts and rest of 7.1 was DefTech ProCinema 600. Was a great sounding system and served me well. Updated TV recently so started the domino effects of upgrades.one leading to another. Anyway, I read and saw a lot of great reviews on the RZ50. I also considered ArCam, Anthem, Integra, Marantz, Pioneer, Yamaha, and Denon.even created a spreadsheet. :) While I am sure that those brands have really nice receivers, I am very happy with the RZ50 choice so far. Just got it last week. Easy to use, including DIRAC, and sounds fantastic. Picture on Samsung S95B OLED great as well. I haven't really found any issue that i couldn't solve on my own so far.I am instruction challenged and don't like to read a lot. I know Crutchfield is there if i need them and they helped me during my search. BTW - also upgraded fronts to Wharfedale EVO 4.1.WOW! Pure Direct really sounds great. So do home theater modes. Plan to expand into Atmos Heights at some point. As you can tell I'm very happy with my choice so far. I expect it will continue based on my previous experience with Onkyo.
Pros: Feature rich Good power Easy to use Seems to run cooler than NR807 Value
Cons: Big (NR807 was too for me)

Very impressive
Jacob from CHICO, CA on 2/3/2023
I was impressed with this unit straight out of the box. It sounded better than my 6 year old reciever from another manufacturer. I'm running my 4 height channels with this units internal amps and running a 5x200 external amp for my 5 base speakers. Even with the external amp added in, this setup is an unbelievable value compared to other options. In my opinion Dirac Live is the cherry on top of this system. I have a problematic small room. I have tweeked and fiddled with my old reciever for five years. I ran the quick setup of Dirac and in 10 minutes I achieved far better soundstage, center imaging, overall tone, realism and bass integration than I thought was possible in this room. I highly recommend this reciever it raises my paradigm premier speakers to new heights and the room correction is legit!
Pros: Sound quality HDMI 2.1 with DIRAC

Great sound and surround separation. Took a while getting to 7.1.4 to work. Look closely at the connection diagram. The rear heights connect to the rear surround speaker terminals and the rear surround connects via the rear surround pre-outs to the external amp. I only use it for a Home Theater unit, it stays cool and quiet during use. I will eventually get around to fine tune it and maybe try some of the other features, so far so good. It's an improvement over my old 7010 Marantz.

Product good, support not so much.
Gregg from Monument, CO on 1/23/2023
Product is great but Crutchfield support has dropped way off in quality. Have tried to initiate a chat multiple times and they kept wanting to call me. If you don't want to support chat then get rid of it. Very frustrating to someone who is trying to find information for a future purchase. Sorry, but I don't want to talk to your folks on the phone. Want to ask a simple question, get a simple answer and hopefully purchase from Crutchfield. But I am starting to think I should be touching base with B&H or someone like that. Can't even use email anymore as far as I can tell.

Cons: Chat support sucks. No option for email support.

Amazing
Walter from Spanish Springs, NV on 1/22/2023
Spent way too many hours researching on this. Returned Denon x3800H. Shut down every night at 8pm. Denon had me do a reset, still no go. Inside return window so back it went for the Onkyo instead of the Marantz Cinema 50 which is rich but muted in sound profiles. Integrated easy with my Klipsch as Onkyo has their profiles built in. Amazing sound with Durac built in. No shutting down like the Denon so most likely a defective Denon unit. Durac is a game changer. Will cost several hundred if you want it for the Denon or Marantz if they roll it out in March as planned. Only thing was although 2 subwoofer jacks, it combines the signal (technically 2 subs but one combined speaker so (7.1.2). Surprise so does the other models until they roll out an update. MiniDSP HD with Durac would fix that if its important (7.2.2). Amazing sound like I haven't heard before. I run mostly Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos movies with no disappointments. 77LG with vivid downstairs and 75 Sony Bravia in vivid upstairs. Onkyo is several hundred cheaper than the competition and works right out of the box. Fears about their business issues is unfounded. Alive and well in US and taken over by the parent company of Klipsch who is not going anywhere. Highly recommend the unit.
Pros: Durac built in and can be used from phones, computer, etc. Hundreds cheaper than the top 3 current competitors Pronounced sound and preset configured to Klipsch speaker profiles making life easier.
Cons: Combined subwoofer signal

Onkyo TX-RZ50
Crutchfield customer from RED LION, PA on 1/5/2023
Very good receiver, excellent capabilities. High quality construction. Value for the money when compared to Denon and Marantz at same price point. Replaced a 17 year old Yamaha RX-V2700. Very impressed with Onkyo. I just hope the company continues on. Recommendations: 1. Full hard copy instructions/manual. Such a receiver has too many functions to be reviewed on line. 2. Delay when switching between functions/output. 3. No analog output. Work around is an HDMI to analog converter (cost is $10-$25) 4. Sound volume is extremely low when dialed between 0-40.
Pros: High quality construction, excellent capabilities and many functions. Value for the money when compared to Denon and Marantz at same price.
Cons: No hard copy manual, delay when switching outputs, no analog output, sound volume low when dialed between 0-40.

Very nice unit. It replaced a unit I had for over 20 years. 2 things I do not like about it. It doesn't come with a manual and I have to turn the volume halfway to get sound and I'm using small cheap bookshelf speakers. For the volume reason I am neutral on recommending this to anyone. $1500 plus unit should not have this problem

Happy with the step up to the TX-RZ50
Guy from Portland, OR on 12/26/2022
The TX-RZ50 has been hard to come by, but luckily Crutchfield had some stock. I ended up purchasing an open-box item, and so far don't regret it. The 2-day shipping was a huge plus, so I had it before Christmas. So far I'm only using it in a 2.1.2 mode - mostly to stream music and listen to vinyl LP's - until I finish building out the rest of the video components in our living room (screen, projector, etc.). This is my fourth Onkyo AVR, so the familiarity of the interface made setup a breeze. I installed the Dirac Live software on a PC and cannot wait to use it for room correction, but for now, Onkyo's built-in calibration has been sounding excellent. The TX-RZ50 is well-built and looks great in our AV cabinet. I was a little worried about heat, but it's been running pretty cool. Can't wait to watch video, so I'll update my review once I've completed my setup.
Pros: A little pricey.
Cons: Cheap remote could be more solid and back-lit.

Have been an Onkyo user for years. Previously owned the TX-RZ810. This is a significant improvement largely in part to Dirac. While it takes some time and effort to dial in the proper calibration, it is well worth it. It has taken my speakers to a whole new level in clarity, imaging and bass management.
Pros: Dirac, 8K, VRR, plenty of power
Cons: Learning curve with Dirac. Be sure to use a proper microphone that is calibrated. Mic that comes with unit doesn't cut it.

An AVR for superior movie sound and superbly detailed 2 channel
Crutchfield customer from Macomb, MI on 12/16/2022
I set this AVR up as 5.1.4 and the Atmos Height speakers really add to the excitement. I replaced a Denon AVR that is so old it doesn't have HDMI inputs. I waited for years for a receiver that had ability to run 9 speakers with best in class room correction but that also sounded excellent in 2 channel. My main speakers are 27 year old B&W P5 3 way towers and they've never sounded this good. $1,599 is a lot of money yes, but I am completely satisfied with my purchase. I had a couple set up questions and Crutchfield tech support was spot on answering my questions (correctly).

This Thing is Unbelievable!
Brandon from Gillette, WY on 12/11/2022
Wow! This thing is amazing! A giant step up from an older Yamaha 5.1 unit. It's currently powering a 5.1.2 setup, but will be adding more channels over time. The addition of Dirac Live provides for perfect room analysis and set up. Aside from a few small issues learning new equipment, this thing was a breeze to set up. The power it delivers is unmatched! I've never owned a receiver can litterally be so loud it will push you out of the room. It decodes and processes nearly evey available audio and video format. Onkyo hit a homerun with this unit. At the current price point, it simply can't be beat.
Pros: Easy to set up, clean and modern look, plenty of power, decodes nearly everything, multiple 2.1 HDMI inputs, Dirac Live, expandable to 11.2 with external amp,
Cons: Needs a lot of space for cooling, a bit larger than some units, doesn't display audio output type without pushing "info" button on remote, litterally nothing else

Onkyo does it again - an excellent receiver!
Mike from Wesley Chapel, FL on 11/21/2022
This is my third Onkyo receiver over the years and I don't see myself leaving the brand anytime soon. Setup is a breeze, everything is clearly labeled and laid out, the mobile app is really great and easy to use, and the sound is superb. Dirac did take me some time to go through and it was very picky about audio levels. I would say do yourself a favor and if you do go through the Dirac audio room correction process to not use the mobile app for this. Instead, get yourself a Windows laptop and download the Dirac software from the website. It's much easier to use and is more forgiving than the mobile app was when using Dirac. I did like the room correction it offered when all was said and done (I did the full 13-point correction) but I did need to fine tune some levels as well to suit my taste. Also, I couldn't find this in the manual, but I did see this in a YouTube video, but you can connect to the Onkyo via IP by typing in the IP address of your receiver and using the username/pass of "ciuser" and I was able to adjust all the levels, names, configs, etc. Soooo much easier than using the OSD (on-screen display), in my opinion. Anyway, this is a really great receiver, lots of options to go through and it should offer a nice long life if my other receivers are any indicator.
Pros: - Easy setup, - Great mobile app, - Excellent web interface - Wonderful sound output
Cons: - Heavy - I may have missed it but the manual didn't mention the web accessible configuration and I found out via a YouTube video - Dirac setup via mobile app was a pain, use the Windows PC app instead

Perfect AVR with 2.1 HDMI inputs for Home Theater.
Todd from Herculaneum, MO on 8/19/2022
I have to say coming from a 2014 model Denon X4100 avr, this RZ50 sounds just as good with Dirac Live room correction software in use as my Denon did with Auddessey. Dirac Live can be frustrating to get everything setup perfectly and sounding right, but once you do you be pleasantly surprised. Setting up the RZ50 with my 7.1.2 setup was a breeze. After making all my connections in the back, first time powering up the RZ-50 it automatically updated it firmware. I currently have a PS5, Nvidia Shield Pro, Roku Ultra, and Pioneer SACD player connected to the RZ50 via hdmi. The only device that the RZ50 had issues with was the PS5, it had hdmi handshake issues-causing either only video output with no sound, or sound with no video. I called Crutchfield CS and they suggested a Factory Reset, which thankfully cured the hdmi handshake issue with the PS5 and it hasn't returned yet! I'm pleased by how cool this avr stays when being pushed hard either watching a movie or listening to music on SACD or in Atmos surround. My previous Denon would get hot and required external cooling. I like how this avr is compatible with al, 4K formats as well as HDR, Dolby Vision, HLG and more. For under just 1400.00, this midrange avr imo competes well with the kore expensive big boys on the block. Until companies start releasing they're 2023 avr line up, this RZ50 is the AVR to own for Atmos & DTS:X setups alike. The web and app interface are great with
Pros: -All hdmi ports are 2.1, 1-3 are full 40 gbps/4-6 are rated at around 20gbps. -Doesn't get hot when being pushed hard. -Up to 11ch processing for a 7.2.4 setup w/seperate 2 ch amp. -Dirac Live room correction. -Plenty of power for 9 ch w/out the need for a seperate amp.
Cons: -Remote is cheap and non back-lit... -On Screen Volume display is small compared to other AVR's. -

Perfect for my home theater
John from MCCORDSVILLE, IN on 8/12/2022
I paired this AVR with an Emotiva Bassx A7 to push a 7.1.4 Atmos setup. (7 thru Emotiva amp and the 4 Atmos pushed by the AVR) The Dirac software (controlled via my laptop) made setup an easy task and my movies have never sounded better. The eARC also works perfectly with my LG Smart TV. This AVR is perfect for my theater and has me grinning from ear to ear every time I use it.
Pros: Dirac setup, power, number of processed channels
Cons: Had to make a new entertainment center to house this AVR. (Instructions indicates it needs 33" wide by 21" deep by 16" wide to provide adequate heat dissipation)

A Worthy Upgrade!
Bryan from Sioux Falls, SD on 8/6/2022
I ultimately bought the Onkyo TX-RZ50 based on the need to have additional pre outs besides just LF/RF pre outs on my then current AVR. While this is personally the most expensive AVR I've ever purchased (I'm historically frugal with my money), I still can't believe how much value is included in this AVR with all its features and sound quality. I've only had this AVR for two months and feel I'm still in that "need to get to know it better" phase. But I'll tell you, coming from someone that appreciates sound quality over video quality...Dirac Live is amazing (not to say it doesn't have some quirks but worth it when you're done). This AVR's ability to process two channel streaming video into a fantastic 5.1.2 (my speaker configuration) surround sound event is incredible. I usually like two-channel remain two-channel but the TX-RZ50 outperforms like no other AVR I've owned. This AVR is going to please those that lean toward audiophile interests when sound quality is must. On the video side, while I currently don't have a 8K/4K120 TV capable of taking advantage of HDMI 2.1...it already is a step above from my previous HDMI 2.1 capable AVR with fewer problems. This AVR is a lot less buggy than my other AVR. In my book the Onkyo TX-RZ50 is in that rare sweet spot for those looking for something better than an introductory AVR with all the features you want without having to fully invest more than you can afford into a company's flagship model.

Junk receiver
Craig from Baraboo, WI on 7/30/2022
Buyer beware! Purchased this product a week ago. Works great if you have an eARC tv. But if you are planning to use a set top box connected through the receiver good luck. The receiver constantly defaults back to "TV" so you have to fight to stay on cable/sat input. Called tech support twice. After many changes to my LG tv and the receiver while talking to support finally gave up. Was told by onkyo tech support that it is all the fault of the HDMI 2.1 standards and the TV manufacturers. Rationale is eARC tv's constantly send instructions to receiver to go to TV setting. You can disable HDMI CEC but now you have to use separate remote's to turn all your equipment off. I guess onkyo does not write the software to their own product. Also please note that I have an Apple TV connected to stormbox input and if you select to go back to TV input to go back to your tv you loose the audio. So you must turn the receiver off then back on to actually recover the audio from your tv. Really regret buying this receiver as had no issues with my pioneer receiver just want HDMI 2.1 inputs.
Pros: Tv with ARC workd great
Cons: Using set top box or Apple TV through the receiver has multiple issues.

Great sounding receiver
Jose from Saint Cloud, FL on 6/21/2022
Excellent sounding receiver, but it is not without it quirks. Namely the implementation of Dirac Live. There have been issues connecting the DL servers, timing issues that seem to be set in stone across the board. So the AVR either doesn't display the correct timing of your subs, or they are flat out set to 20ms. I'm running dual subs with a miniDSP, so I had to get creative so that I would have accurate distance measurements. I still gave this receiver 5 stars because the sound and separation are amazing. This was a huge upgrade, in my opinion, over the Denon AVR-X4200 it replaced. I also tried an Integra 3.5, but it was lacking the processing I needed to run my 7.2.4 setup. Other than that, the AVR sounds amazing. It is running my 7.2.4 setup via external amplification. The only amps being used from the AVR are the (4) ceiling speakers. I would definitely recommend even with the nuisances noted above.
Pros: Excellent sound and value.
Cons: Dirac Live implementation needs to be fixed via firmware update.

I was looking for something that can process 11 channels with DIRAC and this was by far the most affordable option. It hasn't disappointed either. The calibration is straight forward and highly effective. It sounds great and has plenty of power for the channels I'm using now. It also allows me to expand into a 7.2.4 from my 5.1.2 in the near future. Also, the new HDMI 2.1 features have been working well for me.

This is a great unit. Pretty easy to set up as long as the rest of your equipment settings are correct. Had to take time on YouTube and reading and re-reading the manual several times before I could get Atmos to work. It's been good once it was all said and done. Plenty of power for my entire Klipsch Reference speakers running 5.2.4. No issues with my PS5.

Lives up to the hype! Easy to use, setup in a flash, does what it is supposed to do and very well.
Pros: 8k eARC, THX , what's not to like!
Cons: Needed a patch right off the bat for video switch to work cleanly.

Well worth the money
Crutchfield customer from Beaverton, OR on 12/14/2021
I have been very pleased with the design, quality and sound of my receiver. I waited a long time for the RZ50 to be released by Onkyo, and it was well worth the wait. Everything just works, including the HDMI 2.1 features over a 28' run of cable. I believe that the receiver is a better value than similar products offered by competitors, and the sound is amazing. Very happy with the purchase.
Pros: Sound Features Design Quality
Cons: A more modern display would be nice

Have had the receiver since 10/13/2021 wanted to give it a run with as many setups as possible. Stereo imaging and sound are excellent and ease of use is wonderful. I'm on the learning curve as far as dirac looking forward to hookup a minidsp 2x4 hd to correct the subs independently which I think will ad a much needed upgrade to bass management without having to fork over cash for upgrade to dirac live bass management when and if it will be ever available at this price point. Superb 7.1 surround sound and am lookin forward to trying 5.2ish.2 listening curve to fully test atmos. with soon to 5.2.4. Everything connected is recognized and switching is responsive source to source. Also ran a Pc with 3080ti and am getting frames as promised even connected my monitor thru hdmi to confirm this!

Onkyo knocked it out of the park!

Outstanding receiver! I purchased this receiver specifically for DIRAC Live and the pre-outs so I can use my separate amplifier. DIRAC eliminated most if not all sound issues like resonance in my center channel and frequency alignment I was having with my sound stage. 4K and 120hz with VRR works great using a PC for gaming. Not to say that the receiver does not have any quirks, it does. But that does not change my score of this product at all. If you are serious about home theater and 4k 120hz gaming, this is the receiver to get!!!
