About the Logitech® Harmony® Smart Control

Own a smartphone? Then you know how convenient it is. The Harmony Smart Control system makes it even more so by turning your smartphone into a powerful remote that can control up to eight different home theater components. The system gives you everything you need — a free downloadable app for your smartphone, a wireless hub to forward commands from your phone to your gear, and a spare remote for others to use.

Intuitive control through the Harmony App

Harmony's free app is available to both iPhone® and Android™ smartphone users. Swipe your phone's touchscreen to change from one component's control panel to the next. You can also group commands together under one-touch activity icons, such as "Watch TV," or "Play a Game." When you select an activity, such as "Watch Movie" for example, the app automatically turns on your TV, receiver, and Blu-ray player — whatever combination is required to make it work in your system.

You can also program up to 50 TV channels with a logo. Want to watch ESPN? Just touch the ESPN icon and let the Smart Control do the rest.

Control devices behind closed doors

The Harmony Hub is the key to this versatile system. It connects to your home Wi-Fi® network and converts signals from your smartphone into infrared (IR) signals your components can understand. This handy low-profile hub comes with an infrared flasher so you can control components stored behind closed cabinet doors.

Game consoles are covered, too. The hub uses Bluetooth® to communicate with your PS3® and Wii® consoles and uses IR for controlling your Xbox 360®. That eliminates the need for extra remotes, and frees up USB connections on your consoles.

All this and a backup remote, too

The Smart Control system comes with a simple remote to control the basic functions of your components. Rather than borrowing your smartphone, friends or family members can use this remote to adjust volume, change the channel, or select an activity button.

Logitech Harmony Remote Hub

The Harmony Hub (left) relays your smarphone's commands to your system. Use the included remote (right) when your smartphone's not available.

Easy setup

Simple, guided setup has always been a big part of Harmony's success. Just download the free MyHarmony software to your Mac or PC. Then connect the Harmony Hub to it via the provided USB cable. MyHarmony will help you program your remote by asking some simple questions about your system and how you use it. It then downloads the commands and command sequences and sends them wirelessly to the app. And you can use MyHarmony to update your remote whenever you upgrade your system with new gear.

Product Research

Features

Harmony Smart Control: The Logitech Harmony Smart Control lets you control your home theater components from your Apple iOS or Android device, via a downloadable remote app. Using the Harmony Smart Control, the MyHarmondy Desktop Software, the free Harmony App, and your Apple iOS/Android device, you can consolidate eight remotes into one simple mobile remote application. The Harmony Smart Control comes with an WiFi/RF Hub, IR blaster, AC adapter, USB cable, and a basic RF remote control.

MyHarmony Desktop Software: You will need to use the MyHarmony desktop software to add devices, setup, configure, and program the Harmony Smart Control. The MyHarmony desktop software downloads for free to your Windows PC or Mac computer, and the Harmony Smart Control connects to your PC or computer via the included USB cable. By connecting the Harmony Smart Control to your Windows PC or Mac computer running the MyHarmony desktop software, you can enter your device information, create activities and choose your favorites. With this information, the MyHarmony desktop software will configure the Harmony Smart Control to operate your entertainment system. During setup you will be prompted to enter your network password in order to connect the Smart Control Hub to your wireless home network, so you can use the free Harmony App on your Apple iOS or Android device. Your can return to the MyHarmony desktop software program any time to update your configuration, though many settings can also be maintained directly from the Harmon App on your apple iOS/Android device. The Harmony database has over 270,000 electronic devices from over 6,000 manufacturers.

System Requirements: Your PC or computer will need to meet the following system requirements.

  • Windows-based PC:
    • Microsoft Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10
    • USB type-A port
    • Internet access
  • Intel-based Mac Computer:
    • Macintosh OS X 10.6 or later
    • USB type-A port
    • Internet access

Harmony Remote App: Download the Harmony App from the Apple App Store or Google Play and turn your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.3.3+) device into a personal universal remote, when your Apple iOS or Android device is paired with the Harmony Smart Control Hub. Your Apple iOS/Android device will transmit WiFi commands to the Smart Control's Hub, which then turns these same commands into IR and Bluetooth for control of your IR audio/video components and Bluetooth game console. This app gives you control of your entertainment devices; including TV, DVR, Cable box, Receiver, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and more. You also get 50 favorite channel icons and one-touch activity control.

Control Hub w/ IR Blaster: The included Hub turns network commands from your Apple iOS/Android device and remote app into IR and Bluetooth commands your home theater devices and game consoles can understand. The Hub send these same commands to the included IR blaster which can be placed beside a hidden IR component or directly to a Bluetooth game console. You'll be able to control your IR audio/video component and Bluetooth game console (like PS3/Wii/Xbox 360), even if they are in an enclosed cabinet or behind a wall.

Remote Commands: The Harmony Smart Control offers a variety of unique remote commands from your Apple iOS or Android device with the Harmony App installed.

  • Activities: The Harmony App uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use the Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "On", the buttons on the app are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.
  • Gestures: When an Activity is running, swiping up from the bottom of the touchscreen on your Apple iOS/Android device will display the gesture screen. Here, simple taps and swipes will perform functions related to the current Activity such as changing the volume, skipping forward or backward, pausing and playing, etc. Tap the button at the top of the screen to see what gestures are available for each Activity.
  • Favorites: Favorites are your favorite TV channels. Using the MyHarmony desktop software you can select up to 50 favorite channels to display on the remote app. Selecting a favorite channel will start your "Watch TV" activity, if it's not already started, and tune directly to that channel. Using the touchscreen of your Apple iOS/Android device, you can add, remove and reorder your favorite channels right on the remote.
  • System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.
  • Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the remote app.

Simple RF Remote: When your Apple iOS or Android device is not available, use the included RF remote control to communicate with the Smart Control Hub and operate your AV equipment. It lets you change the channel and adjust the volume, as well as switch to favorite activities; like Watch TV or Play A Game. The remote uses a non-rechargeable 3-volt battery (CR2032), which is replaceable.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?

I needed to control bluetooth devices and wanted one-touch power for different entertainment options. The $350 for the better version of this was shot down by my wife. :-P [ Donald  Jul 19, 2016 ]

A
This was my second Harmony. My first was great, and lasted years even though I dropped it... A LOT. Unfortunately, dropped my first Harmony too many times so time for a replacement. Like everyone else these days, I always have my smartphone in hand so I loved the idea of controlling the TV with it rather than reaching for a remote. I'm less likely to knock my phone on the floor, and less likely to drop it than a remote, so bonus there. Also nice to have the extra remote laying around for guests. [ Jason  Mar 08, 2016 ]

Q
can the harmony hub communicate with a verizon set-top box without IR blasters, but through wifi? i can control my verizon set-top box controller through my phone, so was wondering if it can all be done through harmony as well.
[ Danny  Jul 18, 2016 ]
2 answers
A
I haven't set one up with a VeriZon box, but I have with a roku which uses a IP address over wifi. I'm assuming that VeriZon does the same thing.. So you shouldn't need a Ir blaster.
[ Jeramy  Jul 19, 2016 ]
A
I do not see it being a problem. The hub receives the wifi signal from phone or iPad through wifi. The hub sends the signal to the connected electronics. You do not need to use the IR blaster if components are close to the hub so they can receive the signal.
[ Marco  Jul 19, 2016 ]
Q
I would like to buy this to control my whole-home receiver to turn music on from anywhere in the house. This involved multiple commands to be sent (turn receiver on, turn zone 3 on, start Pandora, etc). Is this possible? Can it replicate all functions on my current home theater receiver remote control?
[ Dan  Dec 21, 2015 ]
6 answers
A
Absolutely. I have macros set up for watching tv, blu ray, ps3, pandora, whole house audio, etc. You can also control individual components (the database contained all of my various branded components) I started with this system, but upgraded to the full-service remote, which was simpler for my wife to use rather than controlling everything with her phone. I've been using the Harmony system for about 18 months and haven't had any issues so far. I would purchase this again.
[ Jimmie  Dec 28, 2015 ]
A
yes, it can replace but you have to program each key and its functions. also there is newer Harmony Elite remote is available buy that one instead of this one.
[ RAGHU  Dec 22, 2015 ]
A
Yes, it can do this. The remote ( which can be a smartphone are a tablet) operate through your wireless router, which in turn sends the commands to control unit which you position close to your equipment. As long as your wireless router is robust, and you position the control unit properly (which may require some trial and error), this works very reliably.
[ NORMAN  Dec 21, 2015 ]
A
Check Logitechs website for compatibility with your receiver, but if it's a name brand it should work. This is an awesome remote system. I have it controlling TV, DVR, Surround, Blu-Ray, Sonos Amp, and a PS3
[ Michael  Dec 21, 2015 ]
A
As long as you are within reach of your Wi-Fi you should have no problems. It will replicate all those commands. That's only a basic remote control that comes with it. If you want more functionality through the remote control I suggest going with the ultimate home remote. Otherwise you can control all the functions on your smart phone.
[ James  Dec 21, 2015 ]
A
Works with my Denon. Typically if you can do it with your device remote you can do it with the smart control. I bought extra IR emitters and plugged into the hub to cover everything.

How does this device connect to my receiver? I have a Yamaha RX-V661. This model has no Bluetooth nor Wifi. I was thinking about getting a Rocket Fish Bluetooth receiver.
[ Christiaan  Nov 30, 2014 ]
8 answers
A
It connects to the receiver via IR. It works like a normal remote. Hope this helps.
[ John  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
There is no need for Bluetooth or wifi with the reciever, mine does not have that connectivity either. You do need wifi in your home for the remote to connect to. Essentially the remote (or smart phone) works through wifi to the base module. The base module in your cabinet sends a normal IR signal to the reciever, just like normal universal remote would. Hope this helps.
[ JONATHAN K  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
It uses IR signals to control your receiver / TV / etc like a normal remote. It sends out a strong enough IR signal from the hub that bounces off walls to hit the IR port, so it doesn't necessarily need direct line of sight (I have 2 hubs that control their TV by bouncing off a wall 10-12 feet away). The only thing I needed to do was to increase the delay between commands, so that they would arrive in the correct sequence. The simple remote communicates with the hub by RF, and the smartphone communicates via wifi
[ Odi  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
The remote connects to the Hub via a Harmony specific wireless connection. The Hub controls the receive and other equipment with IR. The Hub has WiFi to connect to your home's wireless network so it can call home for updates and communicate with your smartphone Harmony app.
[ James  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
From the Logitech Site: Your Smartphone will act as the wifi and bluetooth. Therefore, you can have your Yamaha inside a cabinet as long as the hub unit is there. In addition, when looking at compatibility for your Yamaha RX-V661: Yamaha iPod docking stations must be added as a separate device in order for them to be controlled by Harmony. Remember to add both the Yamaha receiver and the Yamaha iPod dock into your Listen to Music Activity. Some docking station examples are the Yamaha YDS-10 and YDS-11SL.
[ ERIC M  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
The instructions are not clear. Here is how it works. The hub picks up the Bluetooth signal from the harmony remote. It converts the Bluetooth signal to an IR signal. Plug the IR blaster into the hub and place the tranmitting end of the blaster near your receiver or the device to be controlled. My TV is "floating" in the middle of my room. I placed my receiver, blu ray player, cd player in my basement. I can control everything from my chair in the family room. You can program several devices to be controlled with one command. For example, I push the movie button on the harmony remote and it powers up the tv, amplifier, and Blu ray player. I would recommend the Harmony remote by Logitech.
[ RICHARD E  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
It will send commands over IR to your Yamaha.
[ RANDY  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
The Harmony hub uses infrared (IR) signals to control your receiver (same as the signals used by the receiver's remote to control the receiver)
[ DONALD  Dec 01, 2014 ]
Q
Can I play music from my iPhone/iPad that is already in my library through this device? Essentially I would like to use this as a way to stream my library of music over my receiver.

A
not from this device. Get an apple tv
[ BRICE  Dec 03, 2014 ]
A
No, your receiver needs to support that thru Air Play or DLNA.
[ James  Dec 01, 2014 ]
A
This device is just a high end remote control,if your device has the function the remote will control it.it does not add a function your devices do not have. In my case I push a button on the remote and it turns on my receiver ,changes it to the Bluetooth function and plays my music play lists
[ CHARLES  Nov 30, 2014 ]
A
I think you've mistaken its function. Harmony Smart Control is a multi-device remote. Think of one remote replacing your TV, audio receiver, game console, and cable remotes. It uses wifi, allowing you to run an app that turns your iPhone or iPad into a touchscreen remote. It's not a streaming device, has no streaming capabilities whatsoever.
[ JOHN P  Nov 30, 2014 ]
A
No. It controls devices. I stream through my Apple TV. This can control most any device.

Q
I have a media room with a 3D projector the electronics cabinet is in the master bedroom closet separated by a wall. Currently I have to go in to the closet to start the electronics and then if I need to make any setup changes to my Yamaha 1020 receiver I have to walk from the closet around to the media room look at the screen and then back to closet to make the changes from (my) memory then back again to media room to make sure I got it correctly. Will this device keep me from having to do all that walking back and forth?
[ Jerry  Oct 13, 2014 ]
10 answers
A
Yes. The remote control (or the app on your smartphone) uses wifi network to communicate with the base unit (in your closet). So assuming that your wifi reaches both your closet & media room, you can stay in your media room while making changes and watch the screen.
[ DONALD  Oct 15, 2014 ]
A
If you put the hub and IR blaster in the closet with your gear, you should be able to control it from your media room. Phone or tablet control is WiFi = works anywhere as long as you are connected to the network. Harmony remote is RF= I tried it and works through a single wall, but not at the other end of the house.
[ DYLAN  Oct 14, 2014 ]
A
Yes. This device should work for you.
[ John  Oct 14, 2014 ]
A
I don't know. My remote does NOT work any longer. Even though I have restarted, unplugged and tried everything, the remote still doesn't work correctly.
[ Brad  Oct 13, 2014 ]
A
Jerry Yes it will! The Hub is an IR blaster & will stay in the cabinet. The remote connects to the hub through your wifi network. Also the hub can be accessed through an app on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. It is easy to set up to power on/off and select the correct inputs & settings.
[ MATTHEW V  Oct 13, 2014 ]
A
My gear is all in a closet as well and my Harmony Smart Control (and my smartphone with the downloaded Harmony app ) easily controls all my media from anywhere in the house. I have an Onkyo receiver, Comcast cable box, Sony Playstation, Apple TV, and Sony Television.......with a wireless router.
[ JAMES  Oct 13, 2014 ]
A
Yes this is what u need. The remote that it comes with is a RF remote so you can control all ur electronics without geting up. Ive had this remote for a year now and have no complaints.
[ CONNOR  Oct 13, 2014 ]
A
Yes, this remote is RF however and may not have unlimited range especially when trying go through walls. Works with my closed cabinet which is around 10feet away, no walls however.
[ Justin  Oct 13, 2014 ]
A
Yes. With either the remote or the app. My remote works on different floors of my house, as long as the signal from the remote can reach the hub, it will work just fine
[ RANDY  Oct 13, 2014 ]
A
should be able too. im able to controll my stuff from another room through a wall

Can I buy an additional or blaster?

4 answers
A
Sorry. I have no idea. I suspect you could directly from Logitech.
[ RHETT W  Oct 02, 2014 ]
A
I purchased some third party blasters and some adapters to use with mine. I have 4 blasters working in my system. I tried to include links to the ones I purchased but this app won't let me include links to other sites. So try googling for the following: IR Blaster by Infrared Resources 2.5mm mono plug to 3.5mm mono plug adapter by Infrared Resources 3.5 mm mono plug to dual 3.5 mm mono jack splitter by Infrared Resources Use the splitter to get additional jacks to plug in the IR blasters.. Use the 2.5 to 3.5 adapter to get from the Smart Control Blaster output to the splitter.
[ WILLIAM  Oct 01, 2014 ]
A
You can probably use any blaster with the same pin plug. There aren't any smarts in the blaster.
[ JOHN P  Oct 01, 2014 ]
A
Yes you can,I purchased additional blaster direct from Logitech only because they did not carry them here at the time, they may now

Q
Can this remote control any SMART TV features? Or just basic TV navigation?
[ Jonathan  Jun 15, 2014 ]
4 answers
A
Harmony did not work for me. Turned some features on but couldn't get Sony sound system to work.
[ laura  Oct 28, 2015 ]
A
Yes, it will control smart TV features on any smart TV. If you have an IR remote with your TV you can teach the Harmony any commands that it doesn't already know.
[ RANDY  Sep 15, 2015 ]
A
The remote is pretty simple. My wife uses it. I don't know if it will control your smart tv or not. But the app will control most devices so I use the iphone app instead of the remote.
[ ROBERT  Jun 15, 2014 ]
A
Basic Tv functions, but can assign tasks to the colored buttons for smart function.
[ R  Jun 15, 2014 ]
Q
We had a power outage during the last ice storm. Our Harmony Smart Control no longer operates the TV etc. That is, the hub doesn't respond to the remote signal. I tried taking out the hub's power connection and replacing it, and pushing the "reset" button on the back on the hub, but still no response when using the remote. Is there another way of restarting it? The TV and sound system work when used independently with their own remotes, but I like using the Harmony for everything.

Q
Can I program 2 remote systems in 2 rooms (next to each other) and keep the signals separate from each other?
[ David  Dec 30, 2013 ]
7 answers
A
The RF physical remote would work fine since it pairs with a specific hub, and the app via wifi would work fine since each needs a unique IP address. My concern would be that the two rooms are close to each other and there are components in the two rooms that share IR signals (for example, cable box). The hub blasts the room with the IR signals and could inadvertently control the next room if the opening is large enough. Repositioning of the hub / problem components might mitigate the IR cross contamination, but it is hard to say without actually seeing the how the rooms are situated.
[ Odi  Jan 04, 2014 ]
A
I'm sorry but I don't know the answer. I only have one Remote control.
[ John  Jan 03, 2014 ]
A
I believe as long as you dont have too many components that it would be possible.
[ DONALD  Dec 31, 2013 ]
A
The signal from the remote to the hub goes through wifi. Each remote is paired to one of the hubs; the signalling is separate from each other The signal from the hub to your devices goes via IR (infrared) signalling. If for example there was a doorway between your two rooms that allowed your devices in one room to "see" the IR signal from the hub in the other room, then that part of your signalling would not be separate.

Yes, you can. I have 4 of these in my home and they are all in close proximity. The remote communicates with the hub over RF, so multiple Smart Controls coexist just fine.

I believe so. Can't say I've tried it but as long as it's seperate you'll be good

Q
All my devices except for the TV are located in a closet. The TV is in the living room. Can I use this remote to control the TV? I can't run the blaster from the closet to the TV.

No. the only way it would work if you added an additional wireless IR system but the delay would be insane.

Thanks Timothy. I am buying the Utimate remote which I was told would do the trick.

I suspect you can but I can't confirm that yet. I am in the same boat. Currently I just turn the TV on with the regular TV remote. After that the harmony system takes over nicely. There are two blaster plugs in the back of the unit, one of which can be used in your closet. I suspect you can sneak another blaster out of that closet to aim at the TV and then it should work. I plan to do the same thing over Christmas. I've just not had time to fool with it.

Thanks Eddie. I was looking at the ultimate. I was hoping that I did need to spend the extra amount. But you are correct. This is my only option. Many thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

If you get the "Ultimate" version of this remote that should do it. The "Ultimate" comes with a remote with IR, which you can use for your TV.

Good thing your TV is not in the closet! I believe you should be able to use the remote on the TV but my setup is different. All my equipment is in plain sight. So I guess I don't have a definitive answer, but I believe it will work.

The short answer is that you need a line of sight from the blaster to your TV. You don't need to run the blaster from the closet to the tv, as long as you can run the blaster wire outside the closet and aim it at the TV. I like mine a lot. I'd say if there is a way you can work it out, this is the remote to get. Occasionally the wifi drops, easily fixed by the reset button - or sometimes rebooting my router. I use a PS3 as a blu-ray player and streaming media hub - PS3 is bluetooth, the Harmony Smart eliminates the need for a separate bluetooth remote. My iPad and the 3 iPhones in our house all work as remotes, all work from anywhere in our house.

No, the remote talks to the hub, then the hub (and mini blaster if connected) sends out the signals to the devices. If the closet and TV are close to each other you maybe able to have the hub outside (for TV) and mini-blaster in the closet (or vica-versa)., or i may just work with the hub. my devices are setup in such a way that I usually need to have IR repeaters, but this does the job because it bombards the room with the signals.

Patricia I have a cabinet along an adjacent wall that houses all my components. My TV is mount above my fireplace. The blaster is probably 5 ft away from TV. I have had no problems at all. This remote is by far the best I have ever owned. I had a universal remote that cost 4 times as much as my harmony smart control and my harmony is 10 times better. Plus the set up and the ability to program my own remote vs the other one had to have a tech come out do to software was dealer use only. Hope this answers your question.
