More power than you need

Dave from Hudson, NH on 8/7/2017

I bought this amp to power two 8" Apline Type R subwoofers ?? for my 05 Nissan Frontier in a portered box under my rear seat. This amp has tons of power and moves both subs without any issues. I buy from Crutchfield because I know they carry top of the line equipment and they back everything they sell. I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything from these guys.

Pros: Quality, price, and support from the team at Crutchfield. More power than what you need to power two 8" Type R

Cons: None

super product

Crutchfield customer from Pennsylvania on 12/26/2015

I bought this factory refurbished. It looked like a great amp with good reatures and it was discounted. I have it in my single cab f250 powering two alpine 10" sws series wired at 2 ohms. Not once has any of my setup missed a beat. Powers up and operates perfectly, stays cool, I have a very clean sound and probably about 10 times more power than I need. I would recommend this amp to anyone with an applicable set up

Pros: Discounted, good brand, does exactly what it is supposed to.

Cons: The settings could potentially be confusing to someone with little expierence. But that could be with anything. Read the instructions if you need to, it's all there.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4Ω load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples). Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Kenwood KAC-9106D is rated at 500 watts RMS x 1 channel with a 76 dBA signal to noise ratio. The signal to noise ratio at the rated power output (not CEA-2006 conditions) is 100 dB.

2-Ohm Stable: The amplifier can also support a 2-ohm load; the 2-ohm power output is 1,000 watts RMS x 1 channel.

Cast Aluminum Heat Sink: The KAC-9106D utilizes a cast aluminum heat sink design to ensure the amplifier stays cool.

Protection circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuits that will turn the amp off in case of the following events:

  • speaker wire short-circuits
  • speaker output contacts ground
  • unit malfunctions and DC is sent to speaker output
  • the amp overheats

Power Indicator: When the amplifier is turned on the Power indicator (on top of the amp) lights up. This indicator turns off with the amplifier, and will turn off if the amplifier goes into protect mode.

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker level input, the amp will turn on automatically when it senses the input signal.

Controls

Gain: To accommodate the varying range of signal levels from today's factory and aftermarket radios, the KAC-9106D features an adjustable gain control; 0.2-5.0 volts line level (RCA) and 4.0-12.0 volts speaker level.

Crossover: The built-in 24 dB/octave low-pass filter has a continuously variable crossover point; 50Hz to 200Hz. Because this is a subwoofer amp, the crossover is always engaged.

Infrasonic Filter: The 24 dB/octave Infrasonic Filter removes ultra-low frequencies that cannot be reproduced by most subwoofers. These frequencies do not become sound, but unnecessary oscillations which affect sound by causing distortion. These frequencies also waste amplifier power and can cause damage to speakers. The filter's crossover point is continuously variable from 20 Hz to 50 Hz.

Bass Boost: The bass boost is adjustable from 0-18dB at 40Hz.

Connections

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are 0.55" wide screw terminals. The remote turn-on screw terminal is 0.335" wide. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. Spade connectors are recommended. The manual lists a minimum of 10 gauge wire for power and ground, but given the 120 amp fuse value and the current consumption specification of 65 amps, we recommend a 4 gauge wiring kit.

Speaker Outputs: There are two pair of 0.335" wide screw terminal speaker outputs; they are internally wired in parallel, making it easy to connect two subwoofers. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. Spade connectors are also recommended for the speaker wires.

Line Level Input: The line input is a pair of stereo RCA jacks.

Line Level Output: The amplifier has a pair of RCA line level outputs for feeding another amplifier; it is the same signal that is input through the RCA line inputs. The amplifier's crossovers have no effect on the line level output signal.

Speaker Level Input: A wiring harness is included for the speaker level input.

Fuses: The amplifier uses three 40-amp ATO blade-type fuses.

Warranty Note

Warranty Note: This refurbished Kenwood product carries a 90-day warranty when purchased from Crutchfield. Kenwood offers Crutchfield customers an extra 60 days extended warranty beyond the 30-day Kenwood Limited Warranty for Refurbished Product that comes in the box.

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.
