A Bluetooth Sonos speaker? Your move!

Sonos Move

The Sonos Move is both dustproof and water-resistant, so you can use it poolside — or even oceanside.

Been waiting for a portable Bluetooth speaker that can wirelessly connect to your Sonos audio system? So have we! Enter the Sonos Move. In Wi-Fi mode, it works like other speakers in the Sonos family. It gives you the same easy access to a multitude of audio streaming services, your digital music collection, and more via a smooth, well-designed mobile app. The speaker even has built-in microphones for Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands.

Switch to the Move to Bluetooth mode, and you can use this portable speaker out on the deck or on the beach, beyond the reach of your Wi-Fi network. Just pair your phone with the Move, then fire up a music app like Spotify®, Pandora®, or TIDAL.

Ready for the outdoors

The Sonos Move is dustproof and water-resistant, so it can withstand raindrops or snowfall. Its built-in rechargeable battery can deliver up to 10 hours of playback. Of course, if you leave it on its charging base, the speaker can play all day long. You can even wirelessly pair two Sonos Moves for stereo sound. And it has a built-in handle, so it's easy to bring along.

Fine-tune the sound with Auto Trueplay

You can optimize the sound of the Move wherever you place it. Turn its microphones on and Auto Trueplay will automatically adjust the EQ. And as long as the Move is stationary, it will continue to monitor and adjust for optimal sound.

Compatible with AirPlay 2

The Sonos Move has Apple AirPlay 2 built in. That means you can stream audio directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® computer through your Sonos system. That includes soundtracks from YouTube® videos and Netflix movies.

Hands-on with the Sonos Move

"I've equipped several rooms in my home with Sonos gear, and I've been a frequent user of their system for years. I was excited to get my hands on the Move — the company's first portable speaker — to give it a solid test run. I found myself using it each day for things that my current Sonos setup won't let me do easily.

"One room where I don't have a speaker permanently installed is the bathroom. Because the Move is water-resistant, I was able to place it on a nearby shelf and enjoy tunes while taking a shower. I found that it had plenty of power and volume to play loud and clear over the sound of the running water.

"While I did most of my listening indoors, within the range of my Wi-Fi system, I still found the Move's Bluetooth mode to be useful. I'm an Android user, so for me, Bluetooth was a simple and convenient way to play the sound from my favorite YouTube channels.

"Setup through the app was a snap, as I have come to expect from Sonos. I was a little surprised that the Move is noticeably bigger than the Sonos One and Play:1 desktop speaker models. That extra size seemed to translate into fuller-sounding bass. I never got close to maxing out the volume — again, this speaker has plenty of "gas in the tank" if you need to crank it up. The fit and finish are excellent, and the charging base (a simple ring design) is sleek, minimalist, and cool. "

Voice commands at home

When connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can use voice commands with the Sonos Move, similar to the super-popular Sonos One. Choose either Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, and control your entire Sonos multi-room audio system using your voice. The Sonos Move has a mic array with noise cancellation to ensure it hears your commands. Tell Alexa or Google Assistant to mix and match from Spotify, Deezer, TuneIn internet radio, and more. You can control even more music features through the Sonos app on your smartphone or tablet.

Beyond music

The Sonos Move, connected to your home Wi-Fi network, lets you access many of the services Alexa and Google Assistant have to offer.

The free Amazon Alexa app lets you set up "skills." These are the services you can direct Alexa to access. It includes information sites, popular smart home brands such as Nest and Wemo®, sports sites, and more.

The same is true with the free Google Home app. You can have hands-free voice control over compatible smart home devices from Wemo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Nest, and others.

More details on the Sonos Move

Product Research

Portable & Weather Resistant (IP56): The Sonos Move is weather resistant with IP56 rating, so it can be utilized indoors or outdoors. The IP56 rating makes the Sonos Move resistant to water, dust, and other elements. It is protected from very fine particles (such as dust) and heavy liquid splashing (including light rain and snowfall). The Sonos Move's rugged and durable outer shell is also resistant to bumps and falls; humidity, salt spray, and UV rays; and hot or cold temperatures. An integrated ergonomic handle makes the portable speaker easy to pickup and carry.

Note: The Sonos Move cannot be submerged in water and should not be left outdoors in a rain storm. The included charging base is not weather resistant and should only be used indoors.

Rechargeable Battery & Charging Base: The Sonos Move is equipped with a rechargeable battery that provides 8 to 10 hours of continuous playback time. The battery can easily be recharged using the included charging base. The charging base plugs into an AC wall outlet and the Sonos Move simply docks in the base to charge the battery. There is also a USB-C connector on the back of the Sonos Move which allows you to recharge the battery without the charging base by using a USB-C cable and a USB/AC power adapter (both sold separately). The included rechargeable battery should last about 3 years or 900 charges, after which you can purchase a replacement battery directly from Sonos.

Audio Section: The Sonos Move wireless speaker features a single down-firing tweeter and one mid-woofer driver powered by two Class-D amplifiers. The one downward-firing tweeter creates a crisp, clear high-frequency response that disperses evenly for an ultra wide soundscape. The one cone mid-woofer driver integrated into the cabinet ensures faithful playback of mid-range vocal frequencies plus deep, rich bass. Two Class-D digital amplifiers perfectly tuned to match the speaker drivers and acoustic architecture deliver dynamic sound with low distortion.

  • Auto Trueplay: The Sonos Move speaker's built-in microphones detect what type of music is playing and measure the frequency response of your surroundings. Using this Trueplay Tuning software, the speaker then adjusts its EQ for perfectly balanced sound. Auto Trueplay is triggered whenever the Move speaker is placed in a new location, and continuously refines the sound while the Move is stationary. Make sure the Move's microphone array is turned on (Auto Trueplay will not work when the microphone array is turned off).
  • Stereo Pairing: You can use two Sonos Move speakers in a stereo pair - one speaker acts as a dedicated left, while the other speaker acts as a dedicated right. The Sonos Move cannot be used as wireless rear surrounds. The Sonos Move will not pair with the Sonos Sub.

Note: Trueplay Tuning & Stereo Pairing is only available when the Sonos Move is in Network (WiFi) mode. These features are not available in Bluetooth mode.

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio: The Move is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom audio eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos product and add more Sonos products over time - including speakers, soundbars, players, and amplifiers (all sold separately - see Accessories Tab). With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Up to 32 Sonos devices can be connected in one system.

Note: The Sonos Move only supports wireless multiroom audio distribution when it is in Network (WiFi) mode. It does not support wireless multiroom audio distribution in Bluetooth mode.

WiFi or Mesh Network: Sonos brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through SonosNet or WiFi.

  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the One, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home's existing dual-band WiFi network (802.11 b/g/n; 2.4+5.0GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system's wireless range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network.

  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance. WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi, 2.4GHz, and 5GHz devices on your network.
  • The Sonos Move speaker is not equipped with an Ethernet jack for a hardwire connection to your network.

Built-In Bluetooth: In addition to network WiFi connectivity, the Sonos Move offers built-in Bluetooth for wireless peer-to-peer connection between the speaker and your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer. Using Bluetooth, you can wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content on your Bluetooth-enabled source device to the Sonos Move speaker. All playback control functions and song/artist/album info display will still be done from your Bluetooth source device (not the the Sonos Move). You are able to pair multiple Bluetooth devices with the Sonos Move, but only one device can be connected and used for playback at a time. The Sonos Move will automatically connect with previous paired device when within range (up to 33'). Bluetooth is a great option when you want to take the Sonos Move outdoors.

  • You'll lose many of the Sonos Move's features and functions when you enable Bluetooth. The Sonos app, multiroom audio distribution, voice control, Trueplay Tuning, and firmware updates are disabled during Bluetooth mode.
  • The Sonos Move must be initially setup through the Sonos Cotnroller App via WiFi, before Bluetooth functionality can be enabled.
  • The Sonos Move only supports Bluetooth audio streaming (A2DP). It does not support Bluetooth hands-free control (HFP) for making or answering phone calls.

Sonos Controller App: Sonos allows you to control playback functions, search features, and multiroom audio distribution through the Sonos Controller app (for Apple iOS 10.0+ and Android OS 5.0+) or the Sonos Controller software (for Windows PC (7-up) and Mac OS X 10.10-up) - letting you control the entire Sonos eco-system from your compatible smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer. The new navigation bar (My Sonos, Rooms, Browse, Search and More) at the bottom of the app makes finding what you're looking for effortless and moving between music quicker than ever.

  • My Sonos: Organize your music with the My Sonos tab. It's the simplest way to combine and access all the music you love. Bringing together in one simple screen all your favorite songs, playlists, albums, podcasts and radio stations from across your different music services.
  • Now Playing: The Now Playing screen features album art and basic playback controls. For a deeper look into the music you're listening to, the "Info View" screen gives you artist bios, album reviews and concert listings. See related artist suggestions to discover a new band for your queue. You can also add to your playlists, delete songs from your library, and share tracks to Twitter or Facebook.
  • Rooms: You can choose to play different songs in different rooms, choose to group all rooms together to hear the same music throughout your home, or choose to group only certain rooms together for music playback. You can also crank up the volume for each room individually or together.
  • Browse & Search: Browse your music services, favorites, internet radio, personal music library and playlists. You can browse your music content by Album, Artist, Song, or Playlist. You can even search across all of your music services and files simultaneously, so you can find the music you love instantly.
  • More: Provides personalized & custom settings for your Sonos system. Adjust and audio settings like bass, treble, balance, and loudness for each room location.
  • You cannot use the Sonos Controller App when the Sonos Move is in Bluetooth mode. Its only available when the Sonos Move is in Network (WiFi) mode.
  • The Sonos device, Apple iOS/Android device, Windows PC, and/or Mac computer must be connected to the same wireless network.
  • The Sonos Controller app (for Apple iOS 10.0+ and Android OS 5.0+) is required for system setup. Initial setup is not possible through the Sonos Controller software (for Windows PC (7-up) and Mac OS X 10.10-up).

Music Services & Libraries: Sonos gives you access to popular online music services and internet radio stations, and well as music libraries stored on your computer or NAS drive.

  • Online Music Services: Sonos works seamlessly with Apple Music, Amazon Music (including HD), TIDAL, Pandora, Spotify, SiriusXM, Google Play Music, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Rhapsody, Deezer, SoundCloud, and more; plus downloads from any service offering DRM-free tracks. (Service availability varies by region.) Click here for the latest online music services (some online services require a paid subscription).
  • Music Libraries: Sonos supports playback of music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. Sonos can play music stored on up to 16 PCs, Macs or NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices on your home network, supporting the most popular audio formats. Sonos indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). Sonos supports the following audio file formats - MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).

Note: You cannot access the above music services and libraries from the Sonos Controller App when the Sonos Move is in Bluetooth mode. In order to access these music services and music libraries within the Sonos Controller App, the Sono Move must be in Network (WiFi) mode.

AirPlay 2: AirPlay 2 is an advanced and easy-to-use wireless multiroom audio platform for iTunes, Apple Music, and other Apple iOS apps. With AirPlay 2 you can play any sound from your Apple iOS device (running iOS 11.4 or later) or Mac computer (running OS X 10.13.2) on the Sonos Move, Sonos Move Play:5, Playbase speakers, and other compatible AirPlay 2 speakers throughout your home. You will also be able to ask Siri-enabled devices (like your Apple iPhone, iPad, or Watch) to control playback of your Apple Music on compatible Sonos speakers. You can even watch videos and movies from YouTube and Netflix on your compatible Apple iOS device or Mac computer with perfectly synced audio on a Sonos Move, Play:5, or Playbase speaker. You can choose to play audio in one room, play the same audio in grouped rooms, or play the same audio in every room.

  • Even though the Play:1, Play:3, Playbar, and other Sonos products are not AirPlay 2 compatible, you can still group these Sonos speakers with an AirPlay 2 compatible player (like the Sonos Move, One [Gen 2], Play:5, Amp, Playbase, or Beam ) to unlock AirPlay for your entire system.
  • AirPlay 2 is only available when the Sonos Move is in Network (WiFi) mode. AirPlay 2 is not supported in Bluetooth mode.

Built-in Voice Control: The Sonos Move blends great sound and multiroom audio with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice-activated, hands-free control of your music and more. A far-field microphone array with advanced beamforming and echo-cancellation is built into the Sonos Move to detect your voice from any direction in the room. When the microphone LED is on, Alexa or Google Assistant is ready for a voice command (the microphone array can be turned off). You can speak at a natural volume to activate Alexa or Google supported voice commands. A responsive audio chime lets you know Alexa or Google has has heard you and is working on a response (you can turn this feature on or off). You'll be able to control music and multiroom playback with just your voice. You can also use the Sonos Move like any other Alexa Echo or Google Home device and ask non-music related commands (like information about the weather, traffic, news, sports, etc) or have Alexa control your smart home devices. Specific control functions will vary by digital voice assistant.

  • Amazon Alexa: You can ask Alexa to play music on a specific Sonos device in an specific room of your home from these featured music services (Apple Music, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, & Spotify). Using the Alexa app, you can group your Sonos products and your Alexa-enabled devices together. This makes it easier for Alexa to control your Sonos products based on which room or area they are in. You can pause, resume, and skip songs, as well as change the volume with all Sonos compatible online music services.
  • Google Assistant: You can ask Google to play music on a specific Sonos device in an specific room of your home from these featured music services (Google Play, Spotify, YouTube Music, Pandora, Deezer, Tidal, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio). You can pause, resume, and skip songs, as well as change the volume with all Sonos compatible online music services. Your can even broadcast a message to everyone in your home over your Sonos speakers and/or other Google Assistant-enabled speakers (include your message after the command).
  • Voice Control is only operational when the Sonos Move Network (WiFi) mode. Voice Control is not available in Bluetooth mode.
  • You can only configure your Sonos system to work with one digital voice assistant; choose either Alexa or Google Assistant (you cannot use both). You will need to search and enable the Sonos skill from the Alexa or Google Home app on your mobile device or computer. Your Sonos equipment and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same wireless network.
  • Sonos and Alexa or Google Assistant work together using a single Amazon or Google account. If you have a second Sonos system in another location, you'll need to use a second Amazon or Google account if you'd like to use Alexa. An Amazon or Google account can only be in use on one Sonos system at a time.
  • Click here for more information regarding Amazon Alexa on Sonos. Click here for more information regarding Google Assistant on Sonos.

Top-Panel Capacitive Touch Controls: In addition to control through Amazon Alexa and the Sonos Controller app, the Sonos Move features top-panel capacitive touch controls. Tap the top-panel controls to play/pause your music and turn the volume up or down, and swipe the top-panel controls to skip to the next or previous song.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a wireless router in your home network. If you don't have a wireless router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
  • The Sonos Controller app (for Apple iOS 10.0+ and Android OS 5.0+) is required for system setup. Initial setup is not possible through the Sonos Controller software (for Windows PC (7-up) and Mac OS X 10.10-up)
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly. Or setup your Sonos component wirelessly via WiFi without any hardwire connection.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.
  • Make sure all of your Sonos components have the latest software update installed.
Note: Although Sonos is compatible with most networking equipment, some network devices are incompatible. Usually when networking hardware does not work with Sonos, it's because it lacks support for the network protocols that Sonos uses to operate, like UPnP, STP, and SMB/CIFS.

Automatic Updates: The Sonos Move supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the One and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available through the Sonos Controller app. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself. The Sonos Move must be connected to your home network and the internet for automatic software updates (firmware updates are not available in Bluetooth mode).
