About the Sonos PLAY:5

All the music you want — anywhere in your home

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect multiple Apple players at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den at the same time.

All the music you want — anywhere in your home

Sonos® systems let you tap into music from your personal collection and from the Internet, anywhere in your house. The compact Sonos PLAY:5 makes it easy to get started or add an additional room — it's a self-contained music system with built-in speakers. You'll get top-notch, room-filling sound from a player that easily fits on a counter in the kitchen or an end table in the living room. The PLAY:5 teams up five drivers — two tweeters, two midranges and a subwoofer — with five tailor-matched amplifiers to deliver full-bodied, lifelike sound.

Exceptionally easy multi-room music

Sonos makes setup easy

Place Sonos music players like the PLAY:5 in every room where you want to listen to music. The players connect to your home network — either via Wi-Fi® or by connecting one player to your router via Ethernet to create a dedicated Sonos network. This network, known for its extensive range and superior performance, gives you house-wide access to tunes stored on your PC along with a wealth of Internet audio choices. (We recommend adding the Sonos BOOST to connect all players to your network wirelessly.)

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ phone to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Rhapsody®, Pandora® Internet radio, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, Pandora, Spotify, Napster®, and SiriusXM Internet Radio. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos Controller. SiriusXM Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. Pandora creates customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

Play music stored on your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect multiple Apple players at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den at the same time.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Great System

John R. from Washington on 9/26/2015

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I wanted to go with wireless speakers after decades of using a traditional wired stereo system with floor speakers and a subwoofer. I am impressed with the sound from a fairly small package. The Sonos app is also very good.

Pros: Very good sound, especially from a smallish speaker. Takes up much less space than a traditional wired stereo system. The Sonos app is easy to use and versatile.

Cons: Kind of miss the deep bass of my old subwoofer but these speakers do an impressive job for their size.

The Play 5 is the newest addition to our Sonos household. Our main system is a pair of 1's with the sub- fantastic sound! The 5 is on a different floor in a small den and really fills it nicely. Not as open sounding but to be expected from a single enclosure. Excellent flexibility with the Sonos system. Great shipping and service from Crutchfield as always.

The speaker is very good.

Pros: can put them in any room, or outside.

Cons: Getting them turned on can be a pain, the sonos app is a little hard to navigate for turning them on. I found that if you just unplug them to bring them inside, you have to go through that process all over again. I have tried turning them off first to see if they stay in the same group, but I have not used them since. Not sure if that will help.

Needed some sound for my kitchen and didn't want to run wire into the ceiling to put in hidden speaker system so decided to try the Sonos based on a friends advice.

Pros: The sound is great for the size and certainly is a lot better than the previous speaker system I was using. Nice to have access to my internet music source fairly easily and quickly. The wifi feature is of course critical to avoid hard wiring anything but power.

Cons: I find the Sonos app to be a bit lacking. It's nowhere near as robust as the Spotify app. I enjoy browsing radio stations and other user's play lists on Spotify but in order to listen to them on Sonos I have to save them as playlists before I can see them. Would be better If I could stream directly from any audio app on my iPhone.

I was excited to receive this for my birthday recently! I hear expense mentioned as a con, but with all the free music available, in my opinion, the cost is moot! The sound is fantastic on my Play 5!!! I can't wait to add more! Forgive me, but I LOVE SONOS!!!

Pros: Easy to set up and it was done so very quickly! Black finish is perfect for our decor! Play5 fills our living room, dining room, and kitchen with joyful music easily with plenty of power to spare! Cost of one speaker is great!

Cons: It will start to get expensive to get ALL the speakers you desire!

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Tried to give it a four star rating but your review form wouldn't allow it. Anyhow...4 stars...why? Because it's very good, not great. To be great it needs to have blow the doors off let the neighbors hear your speaker sound and it doesn't. The guy at the store said you could hear it down the block and you can't. It's just a power thing...sorry Sonos.

Pros: Looks good...portable.

Cons: Lacks kickin' loudness...only plays songs on your I-Phone that are downloaded, it will not play anything in your I-Tunes library that is in the cloud.

Bought the Sonos Play 1 for our kitchen and then the Sonos play 5 for our family room. Love the ease of use with mobile app and ease of setup. Now I am able to access my entire iTunes library.

Pros: Ease of setup and use

Cons: If you are a very serious audiophile, I would probably go with sub woofer and pairing the speakers which I might do in the future. I might also need a boost in my wifi signal as my wifi is weak in my kitchen where I have the Sonos 1. Sometimes I cannot connect and have to start on the desktop app.

We use this product in our bedroom and it fills the room with music. We will also unplug it from the bedroom and take it to the dock and listen to great tunes. It took about ten minutes to set up, most of that time it was updating with my slow internet, and the music was crisp and clear in my room. Love Sonos products.

Pros: So easy to set up and all the music you want with your smartphone as controller

Good sound - but two play:1's are better!

mh from California on 6/2/2015

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I had originally bought the play:5 for a larger kitchen+family room area thinking the bigger speaker would fill the bigger space better. I also bought the 2-pack of play:1 speakers for bedrooms in the house. After auditioning both speakers, I found that the the stereo-paired set of play:1 speakers filled the space much better with a wider soundstage and more clarity. The play:5 by itself was a bit boomier in the space. I found that for mid-size rooms, the play:5 sounded great, but going to the larger room, the stereo pair of play:1's did a better job.

Pros: Good bass, rich sound Good for up to mid-sized rooms

Cons: Lack of stereo separation and soundstage compared to a stereo pair of play:1's

After hearing my brother rave about his Sonos system for the last five years and then using Sonos at work and at my girlfriend's home, I decided to invest in the Sonos 5 and the Connect. Wow. What an easy setup. Took 20 minutes to plug in the Connect and setup the interface on my pc and my iPhone. I now have access to my entire library on my pc (200,000 songs), from my Amazon account, from Pandora, etc all managed off my phone, pc or laptop. The Sonos 5 sounds great in my bedroom and I can easily opt to have both the stereo and the Sonos 5 playing together or not. A bit pricey but worth it. Should have bought these products earlier.

Pros: Ease of setup. Ease of use. Flexibility. Access to different sources. Sound quality.

Cons: A bit pricey.

Like many others, I was a little hesitant to spend the money for Sonos, after trying to get by with AirPlay for cheaper for a number of years. Let me just say that I wish I would have done it a long time ago. I can listen to nearly any music I want, and the system works a million times better than AirPlay. The speakers sound great too, it's hard to go wrong.

The ability to control music in your home with the convenience of an easy-to-use downloadable app (Android or Apple) is a luxury I have waited years for! Setup is seemless, and the sound quality on this particular unit is broad and rich. Like most of us out there - I hope - I enjoy music in my home on a daily basis. The Sonos app and speaker(s) allow you to control all aspects of the system from your cell phone, IPAD, etc. Yes, it may promote laziness to some extent, but when you are in the middle of something and want to enjoy a specific song or album you can achieve this as easily as checking the weather on your handheld device. That translates to utmost convenience. When I set up the Play 5 I was admittedly skeptical about the potential sound quality; both high-end and especially low-end. The unit was and still is impressive for its size regarding sound quality. It isn't going to blow the windows out of your home or apartment, but let's be honest - that is what powered subs are for. I am already planning the next addition to my existing Sonos family of speakers/components. Maybe a Play 3 for the office? I currently have the Play 5 linked to a Sonos Connect --> perfect for those who would like to use Sonos and have a pre-existing stereo system in their home. Best thing about multiple Sonos systems in one home is the ability to group or seperate them independently of eachother and control volumes in unison, or individually. Long story short = Try it out!

Pros: Impressive sound from a space saving, convenient, and flexible unit - did I mention great sound! Ease of setup and seemless linking with other Sonos components also stood out to me.

Cons: The Only thing I would add is an in app feature that allows users to manipulate volume controls in the background mode (vs. going into the app to control volume).

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Great sound, I already owned a Sonos-1 and Sonos-3. They sound ok, but the Sonos-5 is even better. In truth, I purchased this unit due to the "Line-In" capability as I just purchased a turntable which I wanted to plug into my existing Sonos system. Due to spatial considerations, I also wanted to place the turntable close to my computer system in order to digitize and convert Vinyl to flac, etc. In any case, all went according to plan and as a bonus the new Sonos-5 exceed expectations w.r.t sound quality!

Pros: Easy setup, great sound quality

Cons: A bit pricey, but the only system that appears to does what I want to do (which is integrate old with new media forms, etc)

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I was skeptical even though I have a neighbor who swears by his Sonos 5. But I took the plunge and I am very glad I did. The setup had a few flaws but it only took about 15 minutes and not only was the 5 working great but I had downloaded SiriusXM, Pandora and some others. At first I thought that all the music services that I had already downloaded would work not realizing I had to download again into the Sonso app. No big deal. I now run the 5 in a 16x20 room with 19 foot ceilings and it sounds great. I'm going to order a second one next week to get my true stereo. No downsides to this. I only wish that I could plug my base cube in.

Pros: Simple setup great sound plenty of volume plays every music service I need plus my playlist on the ipod touch

Cons: wish I could plug in my present base cube

Happy with Sonos.

MSS from California on 2/8/2015

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I am very happy with both of my Sonos 5s. They have a nice low end as well as clear high end. I bought a black to go against a black wall and white for white wall so their size keeps them both fairly invisible. I have Play 1s as my speaker around the house, but use the 5s with a 25 ft. 3.5 jack as input for my TVs upstairs and downstairs. I set their level to 9 since they were both very low to begin with. I also played with the audio delay on both of my Samsung TVs so the the audio is as close as possible to the output of my TV soundbars. Each show or live event changes the delay, but it's still within reason. Very Happy! Sonos is a great system and is truly "plug and play" unlike the Samsung one I tried first. Not cheap, but not expensive compared to other good sounding systems.

Great sound, but limited integration

TomD from Palm Springs on 1/21/2015

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The sound is great-I got two Sonos Play:5s and hooked them up to be stereo. It creates good overall sound for a large room (where there aren't great acoustics) and there are no speaker wires (only electrical plugs), plus they can be moved to other rooms. The set-up was easy and everything is controlled from your smartphone (iPhone). I mostly listen to my iTunes library and Pandora, and primarily as background music. They look great in white, clean and modern. There are only a few downsides. Sonos is an independent system, so you can't easily integrate it with other sound systems (or the TV) unless you buy one of their Connects. I got a Yamaha soundbar for the TV at the same time, wanted to integrate them all together for amazing TV sound. But buying two Sonos Play:5s and the Yamaha already tipped my budget, so adding more money for a Connect would make me rethink the whole set-up. The other downside is the spouse-it isn't easy for two people to work the system. Since it's controlled from my iPhone, if I step out of the room, he has no way to change a song or adjust the volume easily (although there are buttons on the speakers for volume). It would be better if we could control everything from the TV, so Pandora and other sources would be accessible from anyone in the room (another reason to shell out $350 for a Connect). Not sure there was a better option for my situation, other than a TV soundbar with wireless rear speakers.

Pros: Looks great, good rich sound (especially for background music), easy to set-up, flexible to move to other spaces. Great for stand alone sound system using music apps and digital libraries.

Cons: Limited integration with other systems, not great for multiple users (unless they use their own music sources), may not be as good at high volume, not the best choice for a complete AV sound system.

This is my second expansion to my Sonos system. I started this as part of a new home construction. Is economical and flexible than having a central control system and wiring the house. Flexibility to mix up the rooms any time is great. Play area and the Kitchen each is set-up with an Sonos Amp. And can move the payers to combine with those as needed.

Pros: Flexibility, great sound and sleep timer

EASY TO USE, ROOM FILLING SOUND

TR from California on 1/11/2015

THE PLAY 5 IS AN EASY TO USE, ROOM FILLING SPEAKER. I USE THIS SPEAKER IN A SINGLE SPEAKER ARRANGEMENT (CAN BE USED IN STEREO PAIRS) AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO PULLING WORIES AND INSTALLING IN-CEILING SPEAKERS. THE PLAY 5 PERFORM WELL IN THIS SETTING ALTHOUGH THE SOUND IS MORE DIRECTIONAL THAN YOU WOULD GET WITH IN-WALL OR IN-CEIING SPEAKERS.

Pros: SUPER SIMPLE SET UP. INSTANT INTEGRATION WITH MY OTHER SONOS GEAR (CONTROL AMPS)

Cons: A LITTLE PRICE. WISHED THE SOUND DISPERSION WAS A LITTLE BETTER WHEN USED IN A SINGLE SPEAKER ARRANGEMENT.

I love the Sonos system and especially love the Play 5. I bought several speakers (play 1, 3 and 5 in different rooms) for various rooms in the house and the quality and sound of the Play 5 is amazing. The depth of sound that you get with the 5 is really amazing. The ease of which the whole system is set up is amazing and my whole family loves that we can listen to music throughout the house with ease and versatility.

Pros: Quality, ease of set up

I bought one for each of my adult kids. They were not aware of Sonos (out of their price range at this point in their lives) they absolutely are blown away. The sound iincomparable..I.pulled up an Eagles song and heard it like never before. They love these things....couldn't be better...deep, rich, clear and powerful.

Pros: the ability to connect in multiples ways sets them even further apart from the rest.

Cons: absolutely nothing...

Its great sound in a small package. Connected easily enough. Occasionally disconnects from wifi during heavy wifi use. Considering getting a wifi booster.

Pros: Easy to setup. Great sound.

Cons: Only connects to phone or pc via Sonos app. Not as universal as bluetooth. And only connects via wifi. So even if you wanted to take it outside, once out of range its useless.

Went with Sonos as heard great things (pun intended). We love this system! Very convenient way to get great sounding music in every room in the house. Set up and use very intuitive and easy. Way better sound without fade outs versus our prior Bluetooth. The speakers themselves are outstanding. Have both Play 5s and Play 1s - the Play 5s have a bit more lower end but frankly the Play 1s are so good you would have similar great sound just going with Play 1s and getting twice the number of speakers for the same $ outlay. Highly recommend Sonos and will be adding more shortly. Just wish they had a weather resistant outdoor model as well!

Awesome sound. Small package. Looks great. Super easy to install. SONOS is a great system. I have 5 Play:5 speakers and one Play:1 speaker. It is so nice to be able to walk from room to room and even outside and have the same (or different on each speaker) music playing in each room. The online content that is available is out of this world. I am very happy to have finally embraced the SONOS technology. The folks at Crutchfield were very helpful in answering all of my questions. Great product and great place to purchase it.

I highly recommend the play 5 over any other Sonos speaker for its sound quality. The sound is much more balanced utilizing the onboard sub and tweeter config. just sounds better than any other Sonos. Instead of going with ceiling mounted speakers i decided a few years ago to go the Sonos route for instillation simplicity. I'm very pleased with the quality, ease of operation and integration of smart phone control.

Pros: Installation, sound quality and placement options.

Cons: I'd prefer the sound quality to be a little more crisp...but not a deal breaker. A little pricy.

added to an existing multiroom SONOS system (2 PLAY:1 in kitchen and bathroom respectively) with the usual simple, no hassle, setup one has come to expect from SONOS the PLAY:5 was intended for a somewhat larger room and met all my expectations and more the PLAY:3 might have been sufficient, but I needed reserve audio power to play music at higher volume with minimum distortion the PLAY:5 delivers incredibly clear and full range audio, pure listening pleasure at a wide range of volume highly recommended - from Crutchfield - prompt and efficient order processing and shipping

Pros: excellent audio quality

Cons: not wall mountable due to size and weight (perfect for shelf)

Great Speaker System

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is a great addition to my newly acquired surround sound Sonos system. I wanted a speaker system that I could use to listen to music in locations away from my Surround Sound system. This is a fairly full range speaker with excellent sound, even when cranked up. The beauty of it is that it operates within the Sonos wireless network and as such only needs a power cord to operate. It mobility allows me to use it in any room of the house. It is very simple to setup and to maintain. I can play the same music or different music on this speaker sytem as that played on the surround sound system. The flexibility and ease of use of the Sonos system is terrific. The apps for the system operation could use improvement. Surprisingly the PC software is not as good as the Android and iOS software. It is possible to perform all necessary tasks, just not cleanly.

Pros: Flexibility. Portability. Sound quality and range,.Management of many music sources,

Cons: The control applications are not intuitive nor consistent among the OS specifc-implementations.

Music everywhere

ContinentalOp from Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 4/5/2014

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Once we got the main Sonos device for digital music this was a natural for extending the music to the rest of the house. The Play 5 has the Wi-Fi, amplifier, and speakers all built in. All you need to add is power. Sync to the main Sonos unit and you can access the music library and other sources that you set up for the Sonos. Control is via the same program or app. The system can play the same source/playlist on all devices, or the Play 5 can play its own list, separate from what's coming out of the main unit. Our house is relatively small. We set the Play 5 in a back hallway, and the volume is enough to fill the back part of the house. The sound is quite good over the entire tonal range, for a self-contained unit anyway. Not much channel separation, as might be expected for a single enclosure. Supposedly there is a way to use two Play devices to create wireless stereo sound, but that takes away some of the point of a Play - that it's "one and done", plug in a box to AC power, sync to the main Sonos unit, and you're up and running. My wife loves the Play. Her musical tastes are rather different from mine. This way she can listen to her music in part of the house, and I can listen to mine via the other Sonos. I suspect we'll have another Play for the second floor soon.

Pros: It's a self-contained unit that brings the music off your Sonos system to any room in the house that can pick up your Wi-Fi network. I'm tempted to try it on my back deck - if it ever gets warm enough. The sound is quite good, with surprising base for a single box, good volume overall, and surprising depth. You can synchronize the Play 5 to play what's playing on the main unit, or it can play its own playlist or source separate from what's coming out of the main unit.

Cons: Channel separation is limited, as you'd expect for speakers that have only the separation inside the unit itself. For my installation I haven't found this a large problem; when I want the full stereo effect I listen in the room with the main Sonos and the full-on stereo rig. The Play 5 is a substantial box, so it might be a challenge finding a spot for it in a room. The Play 3 might be a better choice for smaller rooms.

I love the convenience that the Sonos provides. The set up was effortless and I had no problems. After playing with it for about 20 minutes I finally discovered the menu option for "music equalization". Actually, it just allows you to adjust the treble and bass so it's a bit misleading to infer that it is an equalizer. But regardless, adjusting these controls made the sound much more to my liking. The sound is very good from such a small speaker. I was able to download the Sonos application to my MacBook Pro and my I-tunes library works seamlessly with all my controllers (Mac, iPhone and iPad). I liked the play 5 so much that I went out and bought a play 1 for my bedroom! Great products - I plan to buy more for the rest of the house!

Pros: Convenience, seamless operation, very good sound

Cons: A bit on the pricey side...

I've had a Sonos system for many years and still believe they offer the most complete wireless sound solution. The Play 5 is a key component of my system. I have one in the den at home and one in the office. I simply take a Connect 90 and a Play 5 with me when I go to the beach, where I can hook up the Play 5 and the beach house stereo to the Sonos system. I love the portability, and in the evenings will move the Play 5 to the deck for music. The Play 5 delivers excellent musicality for a box its size and, if desired, 2 Play 5's can be connected to form a true stereo solution. Even standing alone, one Play 5 achieves a modest amount of stereo separation and I love the clarity of the sound.

Pros: Sonos network - ability to use my Spotify account, Pandora radio, playlists, iphone controller for both me and my kids, etc. portability - both from home to home and around a home very nice sound for the form factor

Cons: a little pricey, just at the edge of the value proposition . . . but what a lot of value! still tied to an electrical cord

Bought both the Sonos play 3 and 5. The three for my den and the five for our larger living room. The five certainly has bigger sound, with the bass, but I'm not discounting the three, as it does wonderfully in a smaller space, and accompanies the five nicely when played together in separate rooms with different volume levels, to give a 'stereo' effect. Bottom line is that I greatly enjoy both the three and the five, and will add another three for the master bedroom.

Have been looking at Sonos for some years, and finally pulled the trigger on Play 5/Bridge combo (free Bridge promotion). Incredibly easy to set up. Sounds good w/streaming music like Pandora or other streaming services, but really shines from a quality digital copy like EAC (free off internet) from my computer. Big sound w/surprising imaging from an unwuired box. Will be looking to put a pair of Play 1s or maybe Play 3s the kitchen.

Pros: Ease of set up, sound, mobility (in a house)

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The Play:5 as a speaker has sound that's quite good enough for me. It fills up a large space (living, dining and hallway) nicely. It also has a line in plug on the back, which is missing (quite disappointing and shame on Sonos for not including it) on the Play:1 and Play:3. A few words about the entire Sonos sytem.... it provides rich sound, the components are attractive and the ability to send different programming to different speakers is a major differentiator from bluetooth speakers. This is a system for a home - not a dorm room or the beach or..... I have found Sonos support to be lacking. Because Crutchfield provides lifetime tech support, that's only a problem for obscure problems. The pricing is high but not unreasonable given the quality. I'll also add that the system doesn't make it easy to add internet sources of music such as Spotify. Only Spotify Premium works with the Sonos system! And, if you're playing Spotify content via Sonos and someone else in your family uses the same Spotify account to play music elsewhere, it shuts down Sonos abruptly. I haven't explored other internet sources because I mostly listen to Spotify. I also had a failure of my router during Spotify playback. I had to reboot the router to clear the problem. This might have been as a result of problems with my internet service provider (Comcast). But, I will be watching to see how my home wifi system handles the load Spotify/Sonos puts on it.

Pros: Great sound. Great control over what plays on which speaker. Many music sources including Spotify Premium (critical for me). Easy to set up. Easy to control if you use your Smartphone for more than phone calls.

Cons: Possible instability of home wifi given the load Sonos puts on it. Not cheap.

Sonos Play 5, good sound and strong transmission

Skeptic from Washington DC on 12/13/2013

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Speaker has very good sound for a wireless speaker, with solid bass. The Sonos wireless transmission is significantly better (stronger, more relialbe) than using my standard wi-fi network for this purpose.

Pros: Good full-range sound for its fairly compact size. Better sound than comparable size Bose wireless speaker.

Cons: Sonos system does not work with powered speakers designed to work with Apple Airplay, at least not without some jerry-rigged connections and additional equipment, so cannot integrate existing Apple-centric (e.g. B&W Zeppelin Air) speakers into Sonos system.

After years of studying and wondering we finally pulled the trigger and bought a Sonos 5. Did consider the equivalent bose system but went with the sonos. It took 5 minutes to set up and the sound was better than we could hope for. It is hidden behind a curio cabinet and still fills the room with music. Ordered a Sonos 3 a few days later and will end up with three sonos 3s and two sonos 5s.

Pros: very easy to set up, can hide speakers and still get great sound, free bridge offer a nice treat, great service from Crutchfield (as always) Can draw music from just about anywhere.

Cons: A little pricey but still cheaper and easier than hard wired

The ultimate alternative to drilling large holes in the ceiling for speakers, then' fishing' wires.... or spending hundreds on an IPad interface/remote amp! Bought (1) play 5....took 10 minutes to get it up and running...and it sounds great! Plan on buying another Play 5 and a play 1 for the pool area! The ability to adjust the base enhanced the low's...nice if you are a classic music listener.

SONOS Play:5 Great

Great equipment. Have one in the garage and one in the basement. It provides just the right amount of ambient sound. Not too overbearing. But therein lies the rub: If you want more separation (for serious listening) then you really ought to consider separate speakers. The Play:5 sound is clean, well balanced and full, even with a condensed "soundstage". The lows are satisfying for the size of the unit. For my needs, this is perfect. Amazing technology to be able to stream non-stop audio through a home network! Crutchfield is super! - as usual.

Pros: Sound...clarity. Unabtrusive (Just sits there, looks great, and delivers high quality audio)

Cons: Separation limited by the physical box (but then again, that's the nature of what it is....)

Powerful and compact. Great tone, amazing bass for a small speaker and light enough to install where and as needed around the house and backyard. Very durably constructed. I carry mine out to the front porch in the morning to enjoy the news with my morning coffee and over to my workshop later in the day or out to the patio while gardening. Love the portability.

Pros: Connects to an existing Sonos system in about a minute and then as easily controllable as any other Sonos component.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

It sounds great. The problem is that it only works in the morning. Every evening, I get this message when I try to use it: "network connection speed insufficient to maintain playback buffer." Crutchfield's "Details" tab for the Play 5 mentions, "[f]or best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable," and I read on some forums that using your computer's wifi instead of an ethernet cable might cause this problem. Since my computer is a MacBook Air, it doesn't have an ethernet port. I never, however, played any music from the computer using the Sonos software, and it was always off, morning or night, whenever I used the Play 5. I only used my iPhone, which one would think needn't be wired to any Sonos device or router as that would seemingly and unnecessarily limit the Play 5's reason for being. I really wanted this thing to work because it does sound great, and because I dread the idea of repacking the speaker and bridge and lugging them to the UPS store, but I can't keep something that selectively works based upon the time of day.

This is my second Play 5 and why not? They are great for dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms or out at the grill. The sound quality and volume level is a lot better than what you think should come from a small plastic box. I find that placement can make a big difference. When I place them angled in a corner, the bass really comes alive. And they will rock too. Plus, the music options Sonos gives you is ridiculous. I never imagined having this many choices at my fingertips. Don't forget that there are spare Ethernet ports on the rear. They come in handy if you need a port in a room that doesn't have a cable. I have used the ports to set up Wi-Fi repeaters where there was poor signal. Pricy but worth every penny.

Pros: Compact. Good sound. More music options than you can shake a stick at.

Cons: A little pricey but you get your moneys worth.

I was a bit concerned when I decided to replace my old Bose Sound Dock with the Sonos system for two reasons: 1) I was concerned the Sonos might not sound as good and 2) my family is used to the Sound Docks and I was not sure the iPhone app would be as simple. Turns out my concrens were completely unfounded. The wireless sound is excellent and the iPhone and iPad apps are top notch. Albert from Gainesville, FL on 12/8/2012

Wow! What elegant design and simple set up and operation. You'd think this had been created by Apple. Once you get the Sonos Bridge (free with this purchase) set up (very easy), then you just plug in the Play 5 and push the button on top. Open up the Sonos app on your computer, iPad, iPhone or iPod, and get into, say, Pandora, and the richest sound comes out of the Play 5 that you can possibly imagine. My wife, who is an extreme critic of my tech forays came running into the room to find out what was making this beautiful, base-rich, yet vey clean sound. The Sonos app works great and I can control it on my Mac, my iPad or my iPod. Just make sure they are all linked to the same Sonos account when you sign up for the apps. There is a headphone jack and an audio input jack on the back and the Play 5 can be paired with another Play 5 for greater stereo separation, if you want it, but the sound is SO GOOD out of one that it really fills up a good-sized room. Worth every penny and more! Why didn't I do this sooner?

Pros: Elegant design Easy set up Fantastic sound (rich bass and clean treble) Portability from room to room (bass port doubles as carrying handle, but you do have to reconnect with the Bridge when you power down to move the Play 5) Pairing option for greater stereo separation Input and output jacks Quality Ethernet and audio cables supplied Excellent computer and mobile app controls

I have been thinking of getting a Sonos system for sometime. When i saw the offer to get a free sonos bridge with a qualifying purchase i did not hesitate. The product is awesome. I was up and running within ten minutes of opening the box. I am already a sirius subscriber and it works seamlessly. The sound is amazing and the controller apps are well laid out and well thought out. Depending on the size of your music library it may take a few minutes to have sonos to find and "index" your music on your computer. But this is a one time issue. Then when you add new music to your computer you just have sonos look for it. while this indexing is happenign you can still listen to other music sources. I highly recommend this and have been doing so to friends and family. I am getting another one to place in my den as i have this one in my living room. Sonos has hooked me as a customer.

Pros: Easy of set up. Finally all my music isnt trapped on my upstairs computer. Sound is great. The app is easy to navigate. They just made a sofware upgrade and you can now send music to the speaker from any apple device.

Cons: the only cons i have encountered so far is that if poer goes out our you move the unit you have to get it to reconnect with the bridge. it onl takes a few minutes to do, so not so bad. The other one is the fact that i do not see a way yet to save favorite stations in iheart radio. they are easy enough to search for, but would be nice to have a favorite list.

Received item and had issue updating Sonos software from the CD install program. Called Crutchfield Tech Support and was directed to call Sonos Support. While waiting on a Sonos callback, I downloaded the latest software from their web site and proceeded with the installation. Had an issue with updating the Sonos bridge. When Thomas from Sonos support called, I explained the "new" issue and he remotely connected to my PC. Discovered that the bridge IP address was the same as an old printer I no longer have and in my wireless router I had that IP address blocked for any internet traffic. Once that rule was deleted, everything updated correctly, all components connected and the music started to play. Although I did have some issues, they were resolved quickly and the sound and ease of use exceeded my expectations. Great Product. I would recommend this to anyone who wants this capability.

Could be much better - Airplay will probably kill Sonos

EM from Miami on 11/5/2012

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

In all honesty I believe Airplay will kill Sonos. I have had a S5 for a year now, not able to play all of my music directly from my Time Capsule, Sonos recommends using a third party software to do an additional back up in Time Capsule, so I have in my TC my music twice (taking up additional storage space) just to be able to play it with my S5. Sonos states that they are airplay/Itunes compatible, but in all honesty, you need to buy an airport base to connect to the S5 (so much for wireless music) so it simply makes the S5 bulkier and a bigger investment. More and more companies are coming out with similar speakers that work with Airplay, so if you purchase a song from Itunes you can immediately play it on an Airplay speaker instead of doing an additional backup in your TC and wait to update your music index in your Sonos. So keep it in mind if your looking for a new wireless speaker.

Pros: Good sound, easy set up

Cons: Not airplay compatible, music index requires updating, not capable of playing your whole Itunes Library.

I'm a novice audiophile. I know what I like, and I like what I hear from the Play:5. I don't have anything to compare it to (namely any Bose docking station of similar size) but it sounds great regardless. This unit is in my kitchen right now and is easy to move around the house considering it only has one cable to plug/unplug. When moving the unit to another room the Sonos network will pick up the signal within about 1 minute of plugging it in. I also have a Sonos Bridge and Connect:Amp. The Play:5 can also handle volume with no distortion... and I mean LOUD. This can easy fill a large space. When compared to my Sonos Connect:Amp setup which has 6.5" Russound speakers the Play:5 doesn't quite measure up... but I'm also not comparing apples to apples, then, am I? When I turn the volume down for some background music I opt to use the "Loudness" toggle on the equalizer. This boosts some of the frequencies so the sound is clear yet still quite. The user interface of the Sonos program/app took some getting used to and is intuitive enough to pick up quickly. In my opinion it still needs some refining, but I digress. I don't think this will replace my iTunes especially since synching the two is fairly easy. If you prefer to continue operating from iTunes then you will need Airplay/Airport Express.

Pros: Portable. Can be controlled from phones and computers. MANY music options available; I prefer Pandora and Spotify in addition to my personal collection.

Cons: Pricey; although don't forget that you are also paying for the convenience of a network based system. Investigate the price of a full blown multi-room setup (all the way to the banana plugs and wall mounted volume controls) and you will find that the cost is comparable to Sonos. Don't forget to weigh the pros and cons of your setup as well. I had some issues getting this to integrate with my wireless router, but a few quick clicks in the DHCP settings has me up and running.

Just a great product. Works out of the box. Easy to set up and easy to use with your home wireless network. Great sound. Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth it if you are after home audio that you can control completely. We started with just one Play:5, but we are expanding with and AMP and powered speakers for the deck, and plan to spread a few more Play:3s around the house.

Pros: Too many to mention

I've been an audio enthusiast for a couple of decades now. I remember how awesome it was to get my first tape deck with Dolby noise reduction. Now with the continued evolution of digital media, and with most of my music library converted to MP3 / MP4, I was looking for an easier way to play music without having to use a dock. I did a lot of research and I have to say since I use primarily Itunes, the increased presence of Air Play in different applications made the decision difficult, but at the end of the day I chose the Sonos and I haven't been disappointed. I have two Play 5s and a bridge and I plan to add another Play 5 and a Sonos Connect down the road. It was simple to set up the Sonos network, it was easy to set up the Sonos system to access my music which is in Itunes. You can't use Itunes directly, but the Sonos interface you download on your iphone / ipad and computer is easy to use and works great. One pleasant surprise with the Sonos was all the radio stations you have access to free of charge - thousands are already set up in the sonos system. The sound from the play 5 was surprisingly good - enough to fill up a kitchen or large living room without distortion. The best thing is the flexibility- you can play the speakers together, play them independently - listen to the radio in one room and a song on the other - it's awesome. Very few connectivity issues as well - only have lost a signal once, and that was my modem's fault. Love it so far.

Pros: Flexibility, sound quality, ease of set up and ease of day-to-day use, the radio stations available through the system

Cons: The only con I've found is that we have our music all on a lap top, and if you're playing a song (not the radio but a stored song) and you close the lap top, it stops the song - you have to have the lap top connected at all times to access stored music. Not a big deal at all. And the cost - it is expensive especially when you look to add more speakers, but so far it's been worth it.

I bought the Sonos Player 5 after hearing about it on tv. It looks great, very inconspicuous. While quality of sound is the one huge reason to buy this unit, ease of setup and use is just as meaningful. After I set it up, my 13-year-old daughter and 2 friends kept me up all night with their teenage antics. When I got up at 6:30 the next morning, I woke them up by pumping up the jams extra loud on the Sonos using my iPhone in the next room. Fun times!

Pros: Great sound, ease of use.

I bought this system for my wife's birthday. She had been looking for a system to play her iPhone iTunes music. This is exactly what she had been searching for. She loves that she can control it wireless and she doesn't have to be "plugged" into some systems that we have seen. Easy to set up and to transfer music from iTunes to the Sonos system. Now she wants more speakers and and the sub woofer. Oh well, lots of gifts to come...we do have an anniversary coming up. Perhaps I'll ask for a Play 5 for my man palace.

The price is high. This caused issues with the Wife and budget. When you finally make the leap and buy into the system, however, it is well worth it. Sort of like the Apple effect. Set up was incredibly simple. Within twenty minutes of taking it out of the box, crisp and clean music was filling the room. I had a Bose iPod dock in the kitchen. The sound from the Sonos 5 is fuller, clearer and, if need be, a lot louder.

Pros: Ease of set up, sound quality, size, appearance.

Great product. I am a relative novice with both networking and digital music. The bridge and Play:5 were very easy to set up and get running. The sound quality is excellent (though I am not an audiophile so probably wouldn't notice fine details). You should note that if you want to play music from your hard drive, you cannot do so if your computer is in sleep mode. This is not a flaw, but if this is your plan, you will need network attached storage, so add that to your budget. Also you need another component to stream music from your iPhone or iPad. So the cost can add up but it is a very elegant system with excellent sound.

Perhaps the 2 stars should be applied to my carelessness in not understanding the Sonos system. I erroneously thought the speakers would essentially broadcast from my iphone. In my house, we do not have a central computer that houses all our music. My kids and wife have their own computers where their music resides. Most of my music just sits on my iphone. I could migrate everything to one computer, but it's not worth the time. I will return the system and try another wireless system that can broadcast directly from my iphone.

Pros: sound quality

Cons: all music needs to reside on one computer.

After researching several options for pumping music through our new house, which is more than twice the size of our other home, I decided to purchase the SONOS 5. I ended up getting three of these, plus the Bridge. Set-up was easy. The Bridge is installed into the Time Capsule, and relays the music throughout the house, into the backyard and garage. So far there have been no interruptions in the music, and no issues. I expect to order two more the of 5's soon. Operating the system is easy, either through the Mac, or iPod Touch. You can use your iPhone or iPad as well. I suggest that you do not buy the Sonos Controller. It is too expensive, and has limited value. I opted for a 32 GB iPod touch, which was less expensive than the Controller, and has a lot more flexibility and capability. I first hesitated to order these due to the cost. But I now see that this was actually a great value. A lot better than wiring speakers throughout the house. And the mobility is quite easy. All you need is a power outlet to stream music. Each speaker can play different music at the same time, or all can play the same music, filling your house with sound. I'm not sure I've ever been so happy with any other system. I think everyone should these.

Pros: Great sound, mobility, easy set-up

Cons: thinking, thinking, thinking. I give up.

I bought the Sonos Play 5, a Play 3 and a Bridge at the same time. My initial impression when removing them from the box was that they were well built and solid. It's hard to describe, but putting hands on the items just instilled a sense of quality. Kind of like driving an expensive car, it just feels right. Setting up the equipment was extremely easy. I know my way around an A / V system and a computer, but it was honestley very simple. Someone with limited knowledge should have no issues in getting it going. I have the Play 5 in the corner of my living room pointing to the dining room. It's an old house and not very open with alomost every room very compartmentalized. Having said that, the Play 5 does an awesome job of pumping out the sound and filling the space pretty well. The sound is excellent too. For those who like to spend thousands on their audio equipment, I'm sure you'll find areas to improve upon, but for the rest of us with "normal" hearing abilities the Sonos Play 5 will more than satisfy your needs. The low end isn't incredible, but for the size, still impressive. Remember, it's not a 10" powered sub in the corner of a room. I put the Play 3 upstairs in the master bedroom, again in the corner of the room. While it sounds good, there is an obvious difference between the sound quality of the 3 and the 5. Obviously there are more drivers in the 5 so it's to be expected. Bottom line: Play 3 will work, but a Play 5 would be better.

Pros: Ease of use, sound quality.

Cons: Price.

After considering the Sonos products for months, I finally purchased the S5 from Crutchfield, and I haven't looked back since. Crutchfield provided a Bridge unit for my network router for free, and the products were delivered the next day for no extra charge. I can't believe how easy it was to set up, and to link my Sirius radio subscription to, as well as using my Pandora and other Internet based music services with. The sound quality is very good - on a par with my Bose SoundDock, and the convenience plus the diversity of sources can't be beat. I've already purchased a second S5, and keep talking myself out of another, but that won't stop me for long...

In the last few months we've bought a PLAY3 and a PLAY5. Our early experiences with SONOS have been great. Setup was simple, and sound quality is very good (especially on the PLAY5). There are a few small improvements to the playlist creation software that we would like to see, and it would be great if the system could somehow equalize the volume of MP3s, but those things are minor. Overall we're very happy with the whole SONOS system, and we're looking forward to adding additional rooms in the future.

Purchased 3 Sonos 5 speakers and a single 3 to set up house music system over the holidays. Installation of the Bridge, 4 speakers and an amp unit for the existing living room system took less than 20 minutes. Most of that was spent walking up and down our 2 flights of stairs to the speakers to push the connect button. Yes, I could have done this all at the computer and TAKEN the speakers to their locations afterwards but I'm slow like that. After installing controller apps on two iphones and two ipads, we are off and running. Set up was 5 stars for sure. It allows us to have continuous (or custom) music throughout our 3 level home and on the deck whenever we want it. The 5's work well outside but the 3 is a little weak in output for open space. Only complaint to date is some background noise on the speakers that is unidentifiable. You can only hear it in between songs, but we have not been able to pin it down and now it's all I can hear sometimes.

Pros: Ease of install, ease of use, good sound quality in and outdoors. Wireless

Cons: background noise

Great sound in a compact design. Easy as pie to set up. Easy to add additional computer music libraries as well (I use the Bridge and the wireless works very well.) One complaint is that in the Sonos Desktop Controller, all the music including playlists become one alphabetical list - so although two users with individual itunes libraries on their respective macs, wind up having to search search for their own playlist selections, even though each apple computer was bringing in a separate itunes library. I called Sonos support and was told that the only "fix" was to delete my library from Sonos, then go into my itunes and rename all my playlists so that they all start with the letter Z, then re-import my library. Now when Sonos alphabetizes the playlists, all the "Z" lists are together at the end as the second user's library. Inconvenient, but it works. No other complaints.

Pros: Easy to set up and use; great sound

Cons: Mixing of multiple user's playlists

I bought this product because I live in a condo and can't hard wire my place with speakers. I was a bit skeptical because I tried using AirPlay with my receiver in the past with mixed results. After setting up my Sonos system, which took about 10 minutes, I am extremely impressed. The sound quality coming from this small speaker is very impressive as is the myriad of music options available. I set up my Ipad to be the system controller and it is very easy to use and looks great. I currenly use the wireless bridge and this Play:5, but plan to add a unit to connect to my home theater. I would highly recommend this product for someone who want's access to streaming music and/or can't hard wire their home.

Pros: Ease of Set up, Sound Quality, Flexibility of Speaker placement, IPad/Iphone Controller, Access to a ton of radio stations and my music collection.

Cons: It would be great if you could play the sonos system through your computer speakers.

If only every piece of technology I bought was as easy to set up, configure, and use as was our two Zone Player S5's. The Sonos CD installs the desktop controller on your laptop and then proceeds to "read your mind" practically and recommend settings best for your setup. It was by far the easiest install & setup I have ever done. I wish we could give some home theater systems to Sonos to simplify! The sound out of the S5 was very surprising. I expected it to be top notch but it exceeded my expectations. Bass is strong and even at higher volumes (at our pool party, for example) the sound is crisp and sounds like it is from a much larger speaker and system. We use both an iPAD and Android phone to control 2 S5's and a ZonePlayer 90, but I really prefer the iPAD because of screen size. Or you can use your laptop desktop controller if that works for you. We move one S5 in and out of the house to get to use it at the pool. Our visitors all love it and the ability to play DJ with the many music services available. It is a great buy for the money and the sound will surprise you.

Sonos is worth every penny and more!

I watched this product for a number of years. I finally pulled the trigger this year . The controller 90 turned my older stereo and speakers into a great sounding system and in the living room the 90 works great with the newer Preference 40 speakers; bringing out the true depth of the music. Add a few zone players and you have whole house music at a fraction of the cost of a built-in system. It also makes my music collection more accessible. Which means CDs that haven't been listened to in a while , are at my fingertips. If you are on the fence like I was, jump in the water is fine!!!!!

We purchased the two-room system (even though we have both units on the same floor), and are doing fine with the two (no more). The S5 sounds wonderfully better than any comparables of that size. We use the iPhone controllers and they work well and good. I was surprised and pleased to find many little nuance features not listed here (like being able to disable the power light so it doesn't illuminate your bedroom for example). Aside from the good sound, scalability, and iPhone/Android apps, I'd say what sold me was the ability to change music from anywhere (no getting up to change the song at a dock). I think the components are still pretty spendy separate....the only downside.

This product is worth every penny. The concept and quality of Sonos are remarkable. But beyond the product itself, I was really surprised by the very personal follow-ups I received from Crutchfield after delivery. I didn't know such a level of customer appreciation existed in the e-business world.

I consider myself an audiophile. I have bought many products over the years. The Sonos S5 is by by far the best purchase I have ever made. Great quality sound and software! I am in music heaven listening to my Sonos.

We had been trying to figure out how to get music throughout our whole house without lots of wires, etc. when I saw the Sonos system in the latest Crutchfield magazine. It seemed too good to be true, but we looked into it, and then purchased an S5 and ZonePlayer to hook into our router and our main stereo system. The setup was so easy, the sound quality is great, and the ability to play our iTunes libraries (from 2 Mac laptops), Pandora or stream radio is awesome. We love it, and are probably going to be ordering a couple more S5's for the rest of the house (a decision we made about 5 minutes after getting the system setup). We also like that we can manage the system from my wife's iPhone, my iPod Touch, or either of our laptops. Awesome product!
