Don't let traffic slow you down
The included FM-TMC traffic receiver offers current traffic updates, so you can see where problems lie along your route and navigate around them. The GO 730T also works with TomTom PLUS, an optional service which includes traffic updates and requires a compatible Bluetooth phone with GPRS. Subscription rates apply for traffic services, which are available in most metropolitan areas.

Bluetooth keeps you connected
The GO 730T features built-in Bluetooth wireless technology so you can use your compatible phone on the road. The navigator will handle most of your phone's functions so you can converse hands-free. You can even send the phone's audio over your car's stereo system with the GO 730T's built-in FM transmitter.

Get there faster with IQ Routes
TomTom's IQ Routes feature uses historic traffic flow data based on travel speeds from other TomTom users in the area, so it can find the fastest route to your destination at any given time of day. It'll guide you to back roads with lower speed limits where traffic's moving instead of sending you to a major highway that's clogged at rush hour, depending on your preferences and the available data.

Keep your maps current
TomTom's MapShare software lets you fix map inaccuracies on the spot, instead of waiting for the next update. You can edit speed limits, points of interest, street names and directions, and more right on your navigator. You can also report an error directly to TomTom online and choose to share the fix with other TomTom users. TomTom verifies all changes and you can import other users' edits to your navigator. Plan trips with TomTom's free HOME software suite.

Navigation and entertainment extras
The GO 730T indicates the correct lane for upcoming maneuvers with arrows at the bottom of the screen, reducing the chances of missed turns. Speech address input allows you to input the city, street name, and street address by speaking to the machine and selecting from the options given, rather than typing everything out, saving you time and hassle. You can also use the GO 730T to play music from your Secure Digital™ cards, and send the tunes through your car stereo via the FM transmitter.

Note: Before subscribing to TomTom PLUS, you must subscribe to a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), which allows your cell phone or PDA to send and receive data wirelessly. Check to make sure your device is compatible with both GPRS and Bluetooth.

Blue Tooth on 730 is Not Good

wilcoxx from Heyworth IL on 1/26/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned the 730 for 8 months. As a GPS it is a GREAT unit! Although I have tried to make the GPS work with 2 different blue Tooth phones. It functioned properly with all the Blue tooth functions for a while. Then after a few weeks it would not link up to the phone automatically or down load the phones calling list. Also, it will no longer automatically read incoming text messages. Tom Tom has a list of 40 different phones they support for my AT&T network. As of January 2010 the AT&T web site only sells 2 of phones the rest have been replaced by AT&T with new technology. It is too bad Tom Tom's GPSs can not keep up with today's changing technology. If I would have known this I would not have purchased a Tom Tom. I will contact Tom Tom and ask if they can fix my 730?

Not Happy

Gordie from Little Rock, AR on 2/22/2009

I bought 2 GPS units to try out the Garmin Nuvi 850 and this one. The Tom Tom was not user friendly and the voice recognition software did not work very well compared to the Garmin 850. Also, the screen is washed out in bright sunlight. If you're looking for a hands free GPS that you can speak to for directions etc. then I would recommend the Garmin 850.

The Suction DOES NOT Hold The Unit

Maria from Bronx, NY on 2/17/2009

I bought this for my husband as a b'day gift to upgrade his previous (bulky) version - paid $800.00 back then. But was that a mistake...the suction on this model doesn't hold the unit at all. It falls off of the windshield after awhile - making me very nervous. Think about it, BANG on the ashtray and your money's lost!!! So now, I hold it in my hand and navigate my husband...:) On the days when I'm not with him, he'll put it in the ashtray. Kind of defeats the purpose! What's funny is that the previous version was heavier had a better suction base and NEVER fell. This one is lighter and slimmer and the suction base badly designed! Go figure?!

TomTom 730 very disappointing

GoldenBear from Charlotte, NC on 9/9/2008

This is my 1st GPS and I was very dissatified with the unit and glad that I bought it from Crutchfields, because of there return policy. The unit has more bells, whistles, and options that anyone with a life has time to learn and master. However, it is the core functions, which I found lacking. 1) I specifically bought the T model to get up to date traffic. I used it Labor day weekend to drive through and beyond Atlanta. The Natural route would be I-85 / I-75 Southbound through Atlanta. However, EVERY source available has traffic warnings "DO NOT TRAVEL I-85 / I-75 SOUTHBOUND, DUE TO ROAD CONSTRUCTION". This information was available with a basic google search, which I had done. Well guess where the TomTom 730 T routed me, you guessed it right into the heart of that traffic, the exact spot every source told, every driver to avoid. 2) I like the cool feature of being able to add all of these cool voices, some free, some additional cost. However, what they do not tell you is IF you wish to have the unit use "TEXT TO SPEECH" those voice will not be able to give you those specific names and ONLY THE COMPUTER VOICES WILL WORK FOR TEXT TO SPEECH 3) As I approached the destination, it would give a semi final direction, "Turn Left in x yards and then.........." Then WHAT Mr/Ms TomTom???.....I was left hanging

A home dock with an attached USB cable is included in case you need to update your maps in the future. The GO 730T also comes with car charger and a suction-cup bracket gives you an easy way to mount the GO 730T in your vehicle. It also includes an external RDS-TMC traffic receiver which allows you to receive up-to-the-minute traffic information either from TMC--the Traffic Message Channel (subscription required) or TomTom Traffic (not available in the USA/subscription required).

Slim Portable Design: The TomTom GO 730T is lightweight and slim making it ideal to use in the car or carry around in your hand or coat pocket.

Easy Installation: The GO 730T comes supplied with a cigarette lighter adapter for supplying power to the unit in your vehicle and also comes supplied with an adjustable suction cup mount that can be mounted to the windshield or dash or console using the self-adhesive plastic disc. The unit also features an integrated GPS antenna so there is no external antenna to mount outside of the vehicle.

4.3" Widescreen: The GO 730T features a 4.3" widescreen, touch-panel LCD display (480 x 272 pixels) with an anti-glare coating for easy viewing and simple operation. The unit's LCD touch-panel display features a light sensor that provides automatic brightness control for day or night driving.

Included Maps: The unit features preloaded maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico on its internal 4GB flash memory for worry-free navigation.

SD-Card Slot: The GPS unit features an SD-card slot that supports SD-Cards (SD) and Multimedia Cards (MMC) for storing downloaded MP3 music files, JPEG still photos and mapping updates.

Home Dock: The GO 730T's home dock is used for charging the GPS unit when it is not in the car and for connecting the unit to your computer. The home dock features a mini-type-B USB connector on the top for connecting the GO 730T and an attached 42" USB cable with a type-A USB connector for connecting to your PC. No minimum system requirements are provided.

Rechargeable Battery: Fully charging the internal Lithium-Polymer battery will take approximately 2 hours. A fully charged battery offers approximately 5 hours of operation.

Password: You can set a password for the TomTom GO 730T which must be entered every time you start the unit to prevent others from using the device.

GPS Receiver: The TomTom GO 730T features a high sensitivity GPS chipset that gives you fast, accurate positioning.

Driving View: When the TomTom GO 730T starts, you are shown the Driving View screen, which shows your immediate locations on the current route. The Driving View screen displays your current position; the name of the next major road or road sign information; navigation instructions for the road ahead; the name of the next street to turn on to, information about your trip time, remaining distance and arrival time; GPS signal strength; and Traffic bar. You can tap the screen to zoom in and out of your route.

Note: The Driving View screen is shown in black and white until the GPS unit locates your current position.

Text-To-Speech With Speech Recognition: The TomTom GO 730T understands the pronunciation of city and street names allowing you to speak an address into the unit. You can also answer questions asked by the GO 730T while driving, so you can keep your eyes on the road with the combination of text-to-speech and speech recognition technology. The GPS unit also announces directions and street names giving you easier guidance and allowing you to focus better on the road ahead.

Navigation: The 'Navigate to...' menu is the simplest and most useful starting point in most situations. Given your current GPS position, you can use this to navigate to any given address, intersection, favorite location, POI (Point Of Interest), and so on. You can choose from the following options:

  • Home: Once your home location is stored in memory, it can be quickly be chosen as a destination.
  • Favorite: The locations that you visit frequently can be stored in the Favorite menu. A Favorite can be chosen as a destination without having to enter its address each time.
  • Address: This option lets you enter a specific address as a destination. When you end an address, you can choose from five options.
    • City Center: sets your destination as the center of a city or town
    • Street And House Number: sets an exact address as your destination
    • Zip Code: enters a Zip Code as your destination
    • Cross Street Or Intersection: sets your destination as the point where two streets meet
    • Spoken Address: you can verbally enter the address by speaking the state, city, street name, and house number. You can choose to be prompted on screen only, or both on screen and spoken commands.
  • Recent Destination: You can display a list of addresses, Points Of Interest and other destinations that you've used recently.
  • Points Of Interest: This option lets you choose from a database of 5 million railway stations, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and so on.
  • Point On Map: You can use the map browser to select a destination, scroll around the map, zooming in or out as needed.
  • My Location: You can select your current GPS location as your desitination.
  • Latitude/Longitude: This is a calculated route based on Latitude and Longitude parameters.
  • Position of Last Stop: This is a calculated route based on your last stop.
  • TomTom Buddy: You can welcome friends and colleagues into your network of "TomTom Buddies". Then if you both wish you can be alerted when a friend is nearby, or you can navigate to where they are.

IQ Routes Technology: The GO 730T calculates your routes based on the real average speed measured on roads rather than the speed limits. That gives you much more accurate ETAs, and indicates the routes that are truly the fastest based on real world data.

Advanced Lane Guidance: When navigating difficult intersections, the GO 730T will indicate which lane you should drive in to best negotiate the turns.

Re-Calculation: This feature allows the GO 730T to adjust to your new location instantly and provides a new route.

Points Of Interest: The GO 730T gives you access to 5 million Points of Interests including fuel stations, parking, restaurants, cash machines, and lots more.

Favorite Locations: The Favorite menu allows you to store locations that you visit frequently into memory. You can choose a favorite location the same way you choose a destination. The following menu options are available; Home, Address, Recent Destination, Point Of Interest, Point On Map, GPS Position (allows you to store your current location quickly), latitude and longitude, and the location where your TomTom was last used in the car.

Find Alternative: Once a route has been planned, you can change it using the 'Find alternative...' menu. You can choose from the following options:

  • Calculate Alternative: You can find an alternative route if you don't like the original route.
  • Avoid Roadblock: If you spot signs of trouble (such as backed-up traffic or 'Delays ahead' warning signs), you can choose this menu option. You need to estimate whether the blockage extends 100 yards, 1/4 mile, 1 mile or 3 miles ahead from your current position and then select the appropriate icon.
  • Travel via...: Choose 'Travel via...' if you want to make sure the planned route goes past one particular location, perhaps to pick up or drop someone off. The new location is picked in exactly the same way as you would pick a departure point or destination.
  • Avoid Part of Route: This menu option allows you to avoid intersections that are known for heavy traffic.
  • Recalculate Original: You can return to the original best route.
  • Minimize Traffic Delays: Avoid traffic delays using TomTom Traffic information, a TomTom Plus service

View Route: If you already have a route planned, you can explore it in various ways by choosing 'View route'. You can choose from the following options:

  • Browse as Text: This option provides a simple list of the junctions involved and the distances (or times, use the 'Options' button to change the numbers shown) between them.
  • Browse as Images: Using this option presents each junction in 3D, with your turn instruction clearly marked.
  • Browse Map of Route: This option allows to overlay the route onto a map that you can zoom and scroll around.
  • Show Route Demo: This feature shows an animation of your route.
  • Show Route Summary: This option allows you to display the graphical overview of your route that was shown when it was first calculated.

Itinerary Planning: An itinerary is essentially just a list of 'waypoints' and 'destinations'. Your best route is calculated, visiting each in turn (in the exact order you specify).

Traffic Information: You can obtain traffic information allowing the GO 730T to recalculate routes based on traffic congestion two ways:

  • Traffic Message Channel (TMC): TMC transmits traffic information as a radio signal. TMC is not a TomTom service but is available via the supplied TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver and currently does not require a subscription for the first year (subscription fee required after first year). The GO 730T can manually or automatically search and tune for radio frequencies that carry RDS-TMC information in your area. Traffic incidents are shown in the Driving View and on the Traffic Bar in the order that they occur along your planned route. The estimated time for any traffic delay is shown next to the unit's incident symbol on the screen. The distance from your current location to the next Traffic incident on your planned route is shown at the bottom of the Traffic Bar on the GO 730T's LCD screen. Incidents are also shown in the Driving View of the GO 730T so that you can view the precise location of any incident.
  • TomTom Traffic: TomTom Traffic is a TomTom service for receiving up-to-date traffic information. The TomTom Traffic service is currently available for Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It requires a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone and a wireless data connection (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, CDMA). TomTom Traffic uses the most up-to-date information from many local sources. You must establish a Bluetooth connection between your cell phone and the GO 730T and you must have a wireless data subscription with your mobile network operator and a subscription to TomTom Traffic.

Preferences: You can change much of the look and feel of your TomTom system to your own liking by using 'Preferences'. You can adjust the following:

  • Display Color Scheme: When 'Use Day Colors' is selected, bright colors are used, with a lot of contrast, so that you can see the map clearly. When it is dark outside, you may want to 'Use Night Colors'. The navigation view will then be displayed (by default) using dark and subdued colors that will not interfere with your night vision. The TomTom also has a light sensor which can do this automatically.
  • Show/Hide POI On Map: This option allows you to show or hide each category of POI; for example, show restaurants and don't show ferry terminals.
  • Safety Preferences: The unit provides a list of preferences to make your journey safer. You can select from: Hide menu options while driving, Suggest driving breaks, Show safety reminders, Warn when near churches or schools, Warn when driving faster than set speed or faster than allowed, and Warn not to leave device in car.

Choose 'Turn off 3D display' to revert to an overhead 'plan' map, which is constantly rotated to keep your current direction of travel pointing 'up' the screen. Choose 'Turn on 3D display' to return to the original view.
  • Hide/Show Lane Images: You can choose to hide or show lane images.
  • Change Map Colors: You can independently select from 10 map color schemes for day and night colors.
