Marantz AV7706

Started with Marantz SR6012 for my 5.2.6 home theatre. I wanted to improve on it and got an Arcam AV20 receiver. It sounded great but after a few weeks and a network issue, I was uncomfortable with their web-based interface. I prefer the easy-to-use Marantz onscreen commands, also decided to go the separates route. Thus, the AV7706. Once in place, the sound of movies and music on the Marantz is every bit as good as Arcam, if not a tad better, and overall, the AV7706 is rock steady and easier to use. I am particularly pleased how well music sounds in stereo, making a separate DAC superfluous. FWIW, the Arcam did an excellent job in placing the sounds around the room with Atmos, nudging out Marantz in that specific area. Even still, I do not regret the change. Arcam uses Dirac, but I found it complex and not a quantum leap better. Audyssey room equalization has always provided improved sound in my listening area. I opted for ease and a familiar interface, and the bottom line is my home theatre sounds better than ever.

Pros: The step-by-step onscreen setup instructions, albeit simplistic and at times tedious, are always appreciated. Despite having reworked my system many times, given the various cables to connect in a confined space, I manage to plug a speaker wire or cable in the wrong input. The instructions have saved me time and frustration as a double check for proper installation. Sound is excellent. Glad for a detailed PDF manual to explain the unit's complexities.

Cons: Buttons on the remote are small and hard to read, and it is not a learning remote. Porthole design of the unit makes it difficult to see across the room.

Best affordable Processor

Yomar from Anchorage on 12/11/2021

With Pre-Amp mode the Denon 3700h is the best most affordable processor separate with clear sound you can listen to every detail with separate amplifier, I use two Emotiva BassX A4 amps for the surrounds and the Atmos height speakers and the BassX A3 amp for the left, right and center channel.

Pros: Pre Amp mode, 4K@120 for gaming.

Cons: Only one 4k@120 hdmi input.

Better than Yamaha CX-A5200

Guest from Austin, TX on 7/27/2021

Was comparing option with Yamaha CX-A5200. This is a higher grade for audiophile because it has 7Ch Analog direct inputs for SACD multichannel from Oppo BD105D or future higher performance external DACs. The ability to preset LFE mode (LFE only vs LFE+Main) in one quick button allowing us to switch quickly for listening to music with or w/o sub in one button. Better surround sound with Auro3D and options of height speakers location than Yamaha CX-A5200

Pros: 7Ch analog direct in LFE bass management , speaker preset choices High quality DACs XLR outputs

Cons: Does not decode DSD multichannel from USB

Great AV preamp. It sounds wonderful. I have had it for a month now. Still making small tweaks here and there. I like having access to my system through the remote app on my phone. I'm using the 9.2 Bi-amp setting and has been working great.

Awesome all around Pre Amp, Loving balanced connections

I have been told for a long time that balanced connections made a great improvement in the quality of sound, now I am a believer. I had been using a traditional receiver as my pre amp for several years, and I thought it worked great. My receiver started having issues, so I replaced it with this dedicated Marantz pre amp. First I connected it with the same RCA connections that I used in my previous setup. Then I decided to step up to XLR connections. It is the first time I have used balanced connections, and even with the same amp, it is a noticeable upgrade. The Marantz set up, and App are easy to use. The only thing I have not been thrilled with, is it does not stay on the same input when you shut the unit off. For some reason, every time I turn my system back on, it automatically switches inputs to my antenna. Not a big deal, but a mild annoyance since I rarely even use that input. Overall, I am very pleased with the sound, and function of this unit. The blue lights also match my Emotiva Amp perfectly, which is aesthetically pleasing as well.

Pros: Great sound, easy to set up, and XLR connections.

Cons: Still working out the input settings, it switches them automatically every time you restart system

Excellent Pre Amp: I liked the Yamaha better though

Overall: Very easy to use and setup. Full featured with all the latest sound modes and connections including HDMI 2.1. The Audessy set up is easy and definitely helped my room which requires a lot of correction. The app is a great..incredibly easy to use and adds a lot of custom adjustment. I thought the app actually brought it's feature set much closer to Dirac or ARC. I kept the adjustments below 1000hz and it provided clean bass. I used the Marantz mostly for movies. I definitely noticed incredible micro detail; like ice forming Harry Potter Azkaban, flight in Blade Runner, race in Ready Player One and in Man of Steel. There did seem to be some mid range gap. In fight scenes for example, swords or bullets were crisp and bright, but body thumps were hollow. Maybe I could tweak the settings and round this out. I streamed music and it was very clear and precise. I'm not an audiophile, but multiple sources sounded great in direct stereo with subwoofer. The apps (HEOS and Marantz) were both good. Easy to send music to the receiver and the control app gave every detail/adjustment you could want. Not a fan of the Marantz menu. It requires you to click into sub layers and then click again before you can back out. Minor thing overall. Ultimately, I exchanged it for a Yamaha A5200. The Yamaha provided a fuller sound stage to me and suited me better. I can't say anything too harsh though on the Marantz. Overall very good.

Pros: Feature set, HDMI 2.1, incredibly crisp micro details, good surround object steering, Audessy with app adjustment is great

Cons: A little hollow to me in the sound stage, menu is a little clunky.

Disappointing

I bought 2 of these units and could not get either to pass through any sound. I connected them both times with both RCA plugs and XLR plugs and nothing changed. I then reconnected myYamaha CX A5200 and everything worked perfectly. I spent at least 2 hours with Crutchfield support but we could never figure out the problem. Their support was very good and I highly recommend them. Marantz, on the other hand, was completely useless as they never returned a call, or an email from me, or the Crutchfield rep. It absolutely could be me, but after 25years of setup experience, and thorough supervision from Crutchfield, I'm not sure.

Great pre pro

This is my first venture into separates and this Pre Processor has been great. I've had Yamaha Aventage series AV Receivers before but wanted to try out Marantz. So far, the journey has been great. There is a learning curve coming from Yamaha, especially the HEOS part, but that's what the manual and many YouTube videos are for. I pared this with 2 Emotiva amplifiers, XPA-DR3 Differential Reference 3 Channel and a XPA-Gen 3 8 channel custom build, for 11 channels total. Klipsch speakers in front and Fluance for the rears. Wonderful power and detail. Very happy and would gladly recommend this for your home theater and listening enjoyment.

Love it, with a few minor issues...

I recently purchased this unit and paired it with two Marantz amps, the 7025 and 7055 using XLR cables. After a week, here are my thoughts: Pros: Atmos processing (and sound processing in general) are stellar. Movies in UHD are noticeably better in sound quality vs. my Onkyo TX-RZ900. Hard to argue that the Audessey mic and iOS app ($20) didn't improve the overall listening experience. From default flat to post-mic set up, the experience is noticeably better. I actually *like* the iPad version of the remote. Works well and shows relevant information. Cons (opportunities): Biggest issue is that the unit randomly shudders the inputs; the TV will flicker and the sound goes out. This lasts typically a few seconds and doesn't happen often, but when it does it is highly annoying. I'm going to switch out all of the HDMI cables with newer high speed cables to see if that helps. Setting up the second and third zone is difficult to "figure out" and the documentation isn't helpful. The remote is very basic. Would be nice to have a more universal style with assisted setup like the Harmony line from Logitech. I use the iPad more than the remote. I can't get SACD audio to play from my Oppo BDP-95 player. It played fine on the Onkyo using HDMI only. I now have HDM and Optical going to the 7706 and neither render audio. I can get Pandora to stream from the OPPO, but DVD and SACD audio will not play regardless of input
