Plays your DVDs, CDs, MP3 discs, and more

In addition to playing Blu-ray discs, the BD5004 can handle a variety of other media, ranging from regular CDs and DVDs to discs filled with MP3 music and DivX® video files. The BD5004 is an especially good CD player, featuring high-quality audio parts, carefully designed audio circuits, and Pure Direct mode. This mode completely turns off the video circuits to eliminate any chance of noise from these circuits entering the audio signal path. A slot on the front panel makes it easy to view photos or listen to music saved on an SD memory card.

Disc Compatibility

Multi-Disc Compatible: The Marantz BD5004 supports the following disc formats: BD-ROM (BD-Video) BD-R (ver.1.1/1.2/1.3), BD-RE (ver.2.1), DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW (finalized discs only), DVD-R DL (finalized disc only), CD, CD-R/RW, DTS-CD, and Kodak Picture CD. This unit will automatically detect what type of disc you have loaded.

Note: This unit uses NTSC, so BD or DVD discs you play back must be recorded in the NTSC system. You cannot play back BD or DVD disc recorded in other color systems.

Blu-ray Disc Compatible: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 40 mbps. Blu-ray Discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better picture quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 1080/24p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better sound quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and uncompressed 5.1 channel PCM.
  • Much greater storage capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Compatibility with your current disc collections: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet.

AVCHD Playback: The Marantz BD5004 will play home videos recorded in AVCHD. AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on a DVD-R/RW discs.

DivX File Playback: The BD5004 supports playback of DivX (Ver.3.x, 4.x, 5.x, or 6.0). The unit can play back files recorded in the DivX moving picture compression format on DVD-R/RW or CD-R/RW discs. This unit supports DivX image sizes up to 1920 x 1080 at 30 fps or 1280 x 720 at 60 fps.

JPEG Playback: The Blu-ray play will also playback JPEG still image files written onto CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, or BD-RE/-R discs. This unit supports JPEG still image resolutions of 32 x 32 pixels up to 5,120 x 3840 pixels. The maximum file size image is 12 MB. The player can recognize up to 255 folders and 999 files for CD and 999 folders and 9,999 files for DVD and BD. The name of the folder and file can be displayed up to 28 characters. Images can be played as a slide-show and can be rotated 360-degrees in 90-degree increments.

Kodak Picture CD: This unit can also play JPEG files stored on a Kodak Picture CD. You can enjoy picture images on the television set by playing back the picture CD. This unit conforms to vers.7.0 of Kodak Picture CD.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Marantz Blu-ray player will play back MP3 and WMA audio files written onto CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, or BD-RE/-R discs. The unit supports MP3 files with a sampling frequency of 44.1 or 48 kHz and a constant bit rate of 112-320 kbps. In addition, the unit supports WMA files with the same sampling frequency and a constant bit rate of 48-192 kbps. The player can recognize up to 255 folders and 999 files for CD and 999 folders and 9,999 files for DVD and BD. The name of the folder and file can be displayed up to 28 characters.

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit, which prevents your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the levels you set, and it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back. The Parental Control feature consists of an 8-level rating system protected by a custom user 4-digit password.

Auto Power-Off: If the unit is in stop mode for approximately 30 minutes, it will automatically switch to standby mode.

Video Features

High Quality Construction: The Marantz BD5004's sleek contoured front panel combines both aluminum and reinforced resin composite to dampen resonance and blend with virtually any décor. The panel's construction helps resist the destructive effects of unwanted vibration, while the custom-engineered feet add a further barrier to vibration as well as a nicely finished look. The Blu-ray player's centrally located disc mechanism places the critical disc-laser interface in the middle of the chassis to minimize the kind of artifacts that could impact both audio and video quality.
