About the Marantz CD6005

Seriously musical sound

Enjoy impressive sonic performance from every disc in your CD library or every music track on your iPod or iPhone with the Marantz CD6005. This capable disc player serves up rich, organic sound, revealing layers of subtle details that will have you exploring your music collection deep into the night. How'd they do it? First, Marantz got all the technical details right, borrowing technology from their top-notch Reference series players for vanishingly low distortion, ruler flat frequency response, and ultra-low noise levels. And then they took one more highly important step, fine-tuning the sound to impart life and musicality that go beyond mere technical perfection. This is the hallmark of all great audio components.

Trickle-down technology for top performance

The CD6005 features a range of reference-class technologies from Marantz's high-end disc players for out-of-this-world performance at a more down to earth price. Its precision disc transport and double-layered bottom chassis resist vibrations that can adversely affect sound. Marantz's exclusive HDAM op-amps in the D/A and analog output stages use discrete circuit elements in place of noisy, low-powered integrated circuits to provide wider dynamic range and frequency response for the utmost musical fidelity. A high-current power supply delivers plenty of clean juice for lively, low-noise playback.

Better sound from your iPod and headphones, too

Marantz also outfitted the CD6005 with a handy front-panel USB port that lets you plug in an iPod, iPhone, iPad®, or even a thumb drive that's loaded with tunes for listening through your home audio system. Plus, this direct digital connection bypasses your player's built-for-earbuds circuitry, taking advantage of the CD6005's high-end digital-to-analog-converter for the best possible sound from your portable music library.

The '6005 also boasts a built-in headphone amplifier with an all-discrete component design for robust output and the ability to properly drive a wide variety of headphones, regardless of impedance or sensitivity. The gold-plated, full-sized output jack is compatible with audiophile headphones, and is equipped with an independent front-panel volume control for convenient, high-quality private listening.

Looking for a great amplifier to pair with this CD player? Check out the Marantz PM6005.

Product Research

Disc & USB Playback
Convenience Features

Audio Section

Marantz HDAM Technology: Ordinary CD players employ conventional IC-based op-amps in the D/A and analog output sections, but the CD6005 is equipped with Marantz exclusive HDAM technology, which uses discrete circuit elements and not ICs. HDAM technology provides wide dynamic range and wide frequency response along with lowest distortion for the utmost musical fidelity

High Current Power Supply: For the most stable power to the various circuit blocks, the power supply employs high speed, high current Shottky Barrier Diodes in the AC-DC conversion circuit, and the power supply is fitted with high current storage capacitors for the most stable DC supply to the mechanical and electrical sections.

Reference Quality D/A Conversion: The CD6005 features high resolution D/A conversion and is equipped with the reference class CS4398 D/A converter, which provides up to 192kHz/24-bit resolution for optimum fidelity with high resolution audio file types. To prevent interference with the critical analog audio output circuitry, the digital audio circuit block is housed in its own shielded subsection.

Precision System Clock: The CD6004 employs a precision system clock to virtually eliminate any jitter for distortion-free music that sounds like the artist intended.

Fully Discrete Headphone Amplifier: The all discrete headphone amplifier section features the ability to properly drive the widest variety of headphone types, regardless of impedance or sensitivity, and the headphone output is equipped with a volume control. The gold plated ¼" jack is compatible with audiophile and studio headphone types and adapters.

Audio EX Function: For improved analog audio output fidelity, the Audio EX function lets you disable the front-panel fluorescent display, to minimize noise artifacts. You can also disable the digital audio outputs when listening via analog audio for even greater noise reduction.

Gold Plated Analog & Digital Outputs: The analog audio RCA outputs, along with the digital coaxial output connector, are all gold plated to ensure optimum signal transfer with no degradation.

  • Analog RCA Outputs: The CD player also features a stereo RCA output for analog connection.
  • Optical/Coaxial Digital Outputs: For optimum compatibility with digital audio amplifiers and decoders the CD6005 is equipped with both optical and coaxial digital audio outputs.

Rigid Chassis Design: The CD6005 CD player's front-panel is constructed from aluminum and glass-reinforced resin, which resists harmful resonances that can harm sonic quality. The panel is finished in a soft black tone, and features a graceful curvature that complements any home décor. The CD player also employs a double layered bottom plate to prevent unwanted resonance that could lead to distortion.

Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz CD6005 Single Disc CD Player can play CD, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs (both 12cm and 8cm discs). The CD6005 supports MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC audio files that have been recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs in ISO9660 mode 1/2 or Juliet/Romeo disc format. The Marantz CD player will recognize up to 512 total files and folders on a single disc. The unit will also display CD-Text, ID3, and WMA song/artist information.

Front-Panel USB Port: The CD player features a front-panel USB (type-A) port. The front panel port is designed for USB mass storage class devices, such as your Android smartphone/tablet or USB thumbdrive. The front-panel USB port is compatible with FAT16/FAT32 file systems and will play MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files. The CD6005 can support 700 folders and 65,535 files per folder. Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
Great reviews, matches the PM6005 and it's a Marantz!!!!! [ Gordon  May 17, 2016 ]
ratings [ israel  May 12, 2016 ]
This unit had excellent reviews as a CD player alone and in addition streams I-phone music running it through a processor to improve fidelity. It is awesome to have a CD player that supports older technology as well as new.Doubling its value to me. Way to go Marantz! [ Timothy  Jan 21, 2016 ]
After researching I believe this unit will deliver the quality and features I want with a reasonable price point. [ Joseph  Jan 20, 2016 ]
I picked this item based on the reviews I read and it's ability to play an iPhone or iPad via the front USB port. [ ROHAN  Jan 11, 2016 ]
Had trouble deciding whether a CD player should be multi-disk, or whether I wanted recording. Ultimately decided to opt for what most reviews indicated was the best, warmest sound. [ JAMES H  Dec 30, 2015 ]
I know the brand quality [ Gary  Dec 19, 2015 ]
My husband Julian actually selected this CD player. He's been viewing this amp on the Crutchfield site for some time. The plan is to configure the Marantz CD6005 to a 1961 HH Scott 299c tube amp with a pair of vintage University 315c speakers. Jules custom designed and built the speaker boxes for the 315C's. Thank you for carrying such high quality products. [ Patricia  Dec 11, 2015 ]
This was highly rated as an audiophile quality single CD player and I needed something to replace my 20 plus year old Nakamichi OMS5. [ cspagano  Dec 05, 2015 ]

4 questions already asked

Is there a shuffle/random play feature while playing music files from the thumb drive?
[ Strat  Apr 02, 2016 ]
5 answers
Yes, the random play feature works fine while playing a thumbdrive. Cheers, Joe
[ Joseph  Apr 04, 2016 ]
I don't use the shuffle/random play feature, but the manual says that it is available when "playing files on a USB memory device."
[ Marc  Apr 03, 2016 ]
Sorry, I just operate it simply with basic functions.
[ JULIA  Apr 03, 2016 ]
I'm sorry that I cannot because I do not play files from a thumb drive. I can promise you that this will provide richer sound from your CD's than you can imagine, however. George
[ George  Apr 02, 2016 ]
Yes. It's controlled by the remote.
[ Clyde H.  Apr 02, 2016 ]
doe this player have the " resume" function on regular audio CD? - when power on again, does it start to play from the track when it was left off? Thanks!
[ zhi gang  Feb 29, 2016 ]
4 answers
No, The resume feature works only with an iPod or USB device connected and if you already have the "Resume" feature "ON". The "Resume" feature normally are present in DVD Players and you are watching movies exclusively. If you play a music CD in a DVD player the "Resume" feature does not work either.
[ VICTOR  Mar 01, 2016 ]
I don't think that ever happened, but I would not count on it. You can pause if for a really long time, but once it turns off, you start from the beginning. Really great sound and a solid performance though.
[ Niels  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Sorry, but I have not used it enough to answer your question.
[ JULIA  Mar 01, 2016 ]
No, it doesn't. It does "resume" on media attached to the USB port.
[ Marc  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Does the headphone amplifier in the Marantz CD6005 have enough power to drive a 300 ohm impedance headphone, or do I need to add an integrated amplifier, such as the Marantz PM6005, or a headphone amplifier/DAC, such as the Marantz HD-DAC1?
[ Fred  Jan 12, 2015 ]
3 answers
Sorry it took me so long to answer. Well, all I can tell you is I don't use the headphone jack. I use my receiver headphone jack but, since you asked the question, I plugged my Koss Tony Bennette signature series headphones into the Marantz and have plenty of power, but they are only 38 ohm. I don't know if this helps you but, I love the Marantz and I love Crutchfield!
[ KEITH  Jan 15, 2015 ]
I don't know. I don't have headphones like that to try. Sorry.
[ MICHAEL  Jan 13, 2015 ]
I'm not so into the technical side of things, but it powers my Denon AHD-2000 fairly well. Could be a little better. They are 25ohm though. Hope that helps somewhat.
[ BRANDON  Jan 12, 2015 ]
Can this unit playback flac files?
[ flacman  Apr 09, 2014 ]
8 answers
No. Only play mp3, WMA and AAC formats.
[ VICTOR  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Sorry, I can't help you with this one. I bought this great player for cd play only and am pretty much illiterate as far as the other features.
[ KEITH  Apr 09, 2014 ]
[ JAY  Apr 09, 2014 ]
[ DEWEY  Apr 09, 2014 ]
Yes yes it does
[ JAY  Apr 09, 2014 ]
Good question. I will burn some flac files on a disc and try playing them and get back to you. However, I can say that it plays audio CD's flawlessly, bringing out every detail in the music.
[ SANTHOSH  Apr 09, 2014 ]
I do not have an answer to this question.
[ DENNIS P  Apr 09, 2014 ]
I'm sorry, but I don't know what flac files are. I play CDs on it, and it works very, very well. I am quite happy with it.
[ EDMOND  Apr 09, 2014 ]
