A slimline receiver that's serious about sound

Marantz slimline receivers have been among our favorites for years. And our customers love them too. The feedback is consistent: these low-profile receivers fit in tight spaces, they're easy to set up, and they deliver rich, powerful sound. The 7.2-channel NR1608 offers full support for 4K Ultra HD video, flexible connections, and next-level wireless streaming features. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround sound decoding bring movie soundtracks to life with heart-pounding realism.

Built for solid audio performance

The NR1608 features high-current discrete power amplifiers on all seven channels for powerful, precise sound. At 50 watts per channel, there's plenty of power to fill small- to medium-sized rooms with thrilling sound. This receiver lets you enjoy clear, detailed music with playback of high-resolution audio formats. Special processing cleans up lower-resolution audio formats, letting you get the most out of the ample streaming music choices you get through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, and Apple® AirPlay®.

Streamline your music with HEOS

Built-in HEOS technology lets you access all of your music — from your personal library, internet radio, and popular streaming services like Pandora®, Spotify®, and TIDAL.

This receiver can be easily integrated into a wireless multi-room audio system. Stream music to HEOS wireless speakers in different rooms, and control each room's speakers independently with the free HEOS app. The app lets you control playback, browse music sources, and select which rooms you want to use. Play the same music throughout your home, or listen to something different in each room.

Customizable amp configurations let you set up the system you want

The NR1608's surround back channels can be used in whichever of four different configurations suits you best, starting with a standard 7.2-channel surround sound setup. You can use the surround back channels as height channels in a 5.2.2 Dolby Atmos setup, or to bi-amp your front speakers for more powerful sound. Or, you can set up a 5.2-channel surround sound system in your living room and use the surround back channels to power a pair of speakers in a second area like a kitchen or patio.

It was just as good as the reviews I read before I bought. Have not yet tried out crutchfield telephone support as I havent needed it yet. The audio is superior to the Yamaha HT I have been using , about 6 years old.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased Marantz NR1608 recently to replace the legacy SR 880 Mark II. Delivery was swift (2 business days) and product arrived well packaged with no damage, it also came with free wire/cable labels thanks to Crutchfield. Really like the slim profile design compared to the old 880. Same robust and high end feel as usual. Audyssey speaker calibration is an awesome feature to auto tune the sounding level to best fit the room. Solid sound quality with clarity and precision feel. Overall very pleased with the product!

Pros: Design, easy setup, sound clarity, Audyssey, HEOS, Great price for such a feature packed Marantz receiver.

    Cons: none so far.

    Classic Marantz Warmth

Doug from Round Rock, TX on 12/9/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For those who have owned Marantz receivers in the past, you will know what I am referencing when I say sound warmth. Still early with this unit as I am just beginning to dive into all the features but first impression is really good. The speaker / room setup with the Audyssey is impressive as it really makes the listening area equal and dynamic, not just front and center. As someone who was used to adjusting tone levels constantly in the past the auto EQ is a great change. While you can still dial those parameters to your liking, I found that it is not really necessary and the sound is excellent for both movies and music. The 50 watts may be something that keeps some away from this unit but I can say it has no issue in a good size living area. Great deal with the price reduction on Crutchfield, solid product. Marantz rules..

Pros: On screen menus, Audyssey set up and auto EQ, awesome sound.

Cons: Binding posts for speakers close together, wish the remote had a back light.

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to upgrade an old Onkyo system-in-box, but my TV stand's shelf isn't tall enough for many of the 7.2 receivers I'd been looking at. I'm glad for this because the Marantz is amazing; the setup and operation are simple, and the sound is crystal clear. I'm still using the old Onkyo speakers and didn't realize how much better they could sound on a better receiver. I needed a new sub so chose a Martin Logan and overall, couldn't be happier, can't wait to replace all the speakers eventually and really see what the Marantz can do.

Pros: Easy setup and operation, clear sound, doesn't get hot.

    Cons: None

By far one of the smallest receiver that I have owned. The receiver is great for a slim line look. The sound quality is remarkable. Pushing B&W 683 without issues. I am extremely impressed with this unit.

Pros: Great sound, beautiful image quality, slim profile height wise.

Cons: Still as wide and deep as a normal receiver.

    Good all around

Excellent sound in a compact package. Overall I am very happy with my choice. The interface is pretty minimalist. You have to dig a little to find settings after the initial set up.

    Pros: Sound, and size

Cons: Can take some time to find certain settings.

Great amp - confusing 2nd zone

Jim from Huntington Beach, CA on 11/23/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These small Marantz receivers are awesome - lots of clean power, great surround processing and easy to use. The internal calibration with the included microphone makes a huge difference in getting the speakers set up correctly. I've used previous generations of this unit to run pure audio system with sound quality better than some dedicated analog amps like NAD. Apple airplay is great, any apple device in the room can send audio to the receiver and it switches on by itself and starts to play - very convenient + excellent sound quality across the link. My only complaint is that for a 2nd zone application (I want to drive a second set of speakers in the nearby kitchen) you can only use one of the analog inputs as the source. To get the ability to use a digital source, you need to move up to on of the much bigger models in their line - typically >$1,000. The option that I settled for with this unit is called all zone stereo - something you have to access via the option menu. It works well but you can't have surround in the main zone. I was able to tap into the analog outputs from the cable box to drive the second zone but there is an annoying time delay between the two zones (must be the digital processing delay time)

So far I really like this compact receiver. It's a nice size and has a lot of great features. My one reservation is the lack of output power, but no problems yet. I replaced an older Onkyo receiver and this Marantz has a much tighter sound and better surround capabilities

    Pros: Size, features, quality

Cons: Not as much power as I'm used to

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have loved Marantz products since the days of the silver faced analog receivers but had no experience with their digital gear until now. I was eliminating my basement stereo set up and also wanted to replace my old Onkyo AV 100 wpc receiver so I could have just one system for the basement. Wow! What a phenomenal sound. Even though the NR1608 has half the power of my old Onkyo it worked perfectly for the basement home theater. Separation and overall channel distinction are leaps beyond my previous unit, the power it delivers is ample for most home theaters and still some to spare. Additional features of Bluetooth, internet radio, tuner and CD output combined with the Zone 2 feature provide the perfect stereo playback. Now all of my home theater and stereo listening is accomplished with a smaller footprint delivering far more sound. Big bang for the bucks with this unit and I'm happy to have made the switch to Marantz.

Pros: Feature rich unit, lush dynamic sound, small footprint

    Cons: None

    Great For Size Pllacement

Dennis from Lincolnwood, IL on 8/1/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great that it is slim. It has its quirks. The HEOS app and Marantz app for my phone and I Pad is ridiculously hard to use and understand. The sound is clean but a little soft more sounding like the usual Yamaha amplifiers, not bad but soft. I'm using larger speakers and a powered subwoofer and while the wattage is decent the fronts could use more power. When I strapped on my 240 watt a channel amp to the fronts via the pre outs the difference was amazing, and note I do not play things super loud. The apps and internet work fine although it will not recognize my Cocktail audio streamer. I'll work on that. I bought this because it was on sale but could have gone cheaper for a lesser brand. But size worked and chose this over the more powerful model because of lack of height where I needed to put it. Note I had bought two units from other dealers prior to this and both were defective: Tuner wouldn't stay on and the other the hdmi Arc plug was damaged. Both returned. I called Crutchfield and they assured me New in box guarantee and had it to me quickly. I would rate zcrutchfield over the years 5 stars for service and support. Good place to buy something. One last thought: this Marantz receiver will do everything you want. Connecting it has a learning curve however. If you have small to medium speakers it will provide clean power effortlessly. The remote is easy to use. The Hellos wireless system hasn't been tried but the Bluetooth send and receive works great. No phono input.

    Pros: Size, build wuality

Cons: Maybe short on power and amazingly bad interface for I phone with Hellos and Marantz app. They should improve that. Confusing beyond belief.

Awesome size compared to other traditional AV receivers...I was able to reorganize my home theater set-up, and consolidate. Set-up was incredibly easy, including equalizer set-up using Audyssey. Sound output is perfect for our smaller room, and sounds so much better than our previous Denon. Video enhancement to near 4K is amazing...have been watching "24" Season 1 from DVD, via older OPPO BD-103, and the video and audio quality is great! Love my new Marantz AVR!

    Pros:

    Cons:

Nice low profile AVR with lots of features

Bob from Los Angeles, CA on 7/30/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to replace a Marantz 1604 which lacked features like HDCP 2.2, the Dolby Surround DSP, and others that have been added to the line in the last few years. I have limited vertical space for an AVR, and Marantz is one of the very few manufacturers to offer a low profile AVR with most of the features I want. Very typical Marantz setup and operation; if you've owned a Marantz or Denon before, you'll be up and running in no time. The AVR wanted to to update as soon as I plugged it in; took 30 minutes, so budget the time for that. Their implementation of HDMI Control/CEC/ARC is improved over the 1604, but is still lacking in features and is still somewhat finicky in when and how it responds - I took off half a star for that. ALL manufacturers have to do better at CEC/ARC - STOP 'extending' the feature set, stick to the basics like power, volume, and "select the input asking to be recognized". The other half star was taken off because the graphics the Marantz puts up on screen for things like Volume, Info Display, and any time the input changes are incredibly large and ugly black rectangles, and they stay up there a VERY VERY long time. They look like they were designed around 1985 when DOS was the king of operating systems. Seriously, Marantz (and Denon), hire a young designer and DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR BUTT-UGLY ON-SCREEN GRAPHICS! Despite the complaints, I'm happy with the 1608. Crutchfield, as always, ROCKS! Great pricing, fast delivery, excellen

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, the cons -- RCA inputs on the back are too close together for any wire upgrades that are not "stock" size. Audiophiles and videophiles be aware. Also, the speaker terminals are too far apart for a dual banana plug to be used (pos. and neg. on a single device). Third, if you are going to use bare wire on a speaker terminal be aware that any gauge better than 16 will not fit. Again, audiophiles and videophiles take note. Lastly, there doesn't seem to be a front display DIMMER option. So the bright gold display is always on. Quite annoying. But, the price is right. The set up is easy and the sound is as it should be. The AC cord is detachable for an upgrade.

Pros: -Easy set up. -Sounds fine. -Power cord may be upgraded.

Cons: -Several cons -- see above.

This is a replacement unit for an Onkyo RZ820 that I had ordered with Crutchfield and is my first Marantz. First, I want to commend Crutchfield for having top-notch customer service which made the swap out for the Marantz receiver seamless. Now onto the receiver - this thing is a beast! Plenty of power and the warmth in the sound brings a presence to the sound-stage that is quite welcoming to the ears. I could not be happier with the purchase and am officially a Marantz convert!

I bought this reciever to support Definitive Technology speakers, use bluetooth, pc stick and old school CD player and Advent wireless speaker system. And I love it! Since my speakers have built in amps for base, the receiver has plenty of wattage to drive the rest of it. Bonus was the low profile which fits perfectly into the console. Bravo to Marantz for still incorporating a good number of analog ouputs for those who like to blend the old with the new.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Marantz replaced a nine year old Dennon has-been. Having a home theater is costly, and has to be or become something of a hobby to keep and maintain it. One has to be a home theater enthusiast in order for it to mean as much. And due to the recession (2008-2017) and having to relocate, I was not able/willing to re-install the whole thing. I tell you this because the NR 1608 was the cheapest Marantz at Crutchfield, and I had reservations about it because of the low price. The Dennon I replaced cost more in 2009 than I paid for this Marantz. When I set this up and re-installed the theater (7.1 setup in my living room which included drilling, crawling around in the attic in the summer, pulling wire, patching holes in drywall, etc.) I was dumbfounded by the power, the sound stratification in all seven channels, and the ease of setup. The Marantz destroys the Dennon in every category that I can think of. Maybe and probably it has to do with advances since 2009, but improvements are so pleasing. I had never heard Atmos before, but once you do, there is no going back.

Pros: Cost Power Quality Ease of Set up

Pros: Sound quality, easy to follow onscreen setup instructions

Cons: The online manual is enormous and intimidating at first. Just print off the pages that are relevant.

Great Receiver especially at the price here.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Marantz has some of the best features and build quality I have found. All the built-in features on this unit make it a fantastic MBR receiver. Watching a sports broadcast but want to listen to music, no problem, AirPlay switches the sound source automatically while the show your watching keeps playing. I have three Marantz units and have never had a problem and this unit has all the features I look for. Sound quality is superb as usual and don't underestimate the power rating, it will provide all you need for the average size room. Current setup is two subs, two large bookshelf mains, Height and surround speakers.

    Pros: Quality

Cons: They remove some key features from the older remote which gave direct access to M-Dax and Dynamic Volume etc. The smart select replaced the buttons but I find it not as useful.

I love this Marantz slimline series! It has all the features you can possibly need, and it meets the WAF (wife acceptance factor)! It just looks so much better in the entertainment system than a big honking machine like most other receivers are designed. I will warn you that you may need to upgrade your HDMI cables if you buy this unit. I experienced "handshake" issues with my Apple TV and Blu ray players. I upgraded my cables to be HDCP 2.2 compatible and that resolved the issue. Now I am good to go and it sounds and looks great! FYI, i have this paired with an LG Oled and Orb Audio speakers. I am a big fan of both of those items as well. This is by far the best setup I have ever had.

Sounds great. Bought this to convert a current 5.1 config to a future 5.1.2 setup. The Audyssey set up was easy. Makes my KEF T Series sound better than before. The audio is more powerful (even at same watts per channel) as my old receiver, and much cleaner sounding. Old receiver would scare animals out of the room - with this one they don't mind. Simple UI, amazing system, highly recommend. Have not yet installed the atmos speakers but I am excited to do so.

Wish it had a bit more power for my medium size room, but overall, it sounds great, I love the Wi-Fi features, and I like the on screen menu. Size is great and it doesn't get very warm.

Pros: Sound quality, size, features, Denon app.

Cons: Wish it had a bit more power.

If I had to pick one word for this receiver, it would be "smooth". The sound envelopes me like a hot tub filled with slightly above room temperature clarified butter letting me float in all its flavorful sonic warmth.

    Pros: Small size, bi-amping capabilities

Cons: My cholesterol has risen by osmosis.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having owned a 1403 for 5 years, I'm very familiar with the Marantz Slimline. I originally bought this model because it was relatively compact, had descrete amplifiers and was devoid of unneeded bells and whistles. I upgraded to the 1608 because the HDMI board on the 1403 gave up and with the money off of the 1608 it made no sense to spend money on repairs. Just like the old 1403, the 1608 has nice clean sound and adequate power for my application - 14' x 16" great room with an 18' ceiling. It's not a small room and I'm using it as a 5.1 with a 200 watt powered sub. I'd rather have 50 Watts per channnel that is clean at near full volume than 100 watts that has audible distortion at 3/4 volume. As with any audio installation, speaker placement is critical to get top performance and I spent a lot of time on this along high quality, heavy gage, speaker wire. The included Audyssey app with the set up mic does a great job and will make adjustments for you. Features: big improvements over the 1403 - assignable inputs with level adjustments so now the cable input level can be adjusted to match the Firestick and the Blueray. The on-screen interface is still a little clunky but improved. The Smartphone app seems like Marantz just wanted to say they have one - not very useful but the new remote that came with the 1608 works well. Takes some getting used to though - like many products these days, you have to learn the difference is in the "settin

Pros: Clean looking; compact size; clean audio; good selection of HDMI and input options; great buy

Cons: On screen interface is not great; phone app is pretty lame

Cons: None except there is a new NR1609 model out soon.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver has been great since I got it. Set up of the system was super easy, the UI walks a user through a new set up, and the included Audyssey mic makes the speaker balancing a breeze. Having the app on the phone is awesome as well so you can control the unit easily from anywhere on the home network. The surround sound is way better than my old Pioneer unit and it is much easier to configure the unit to get clearer voices during usage.

Pros: Great sound, easy set up, and easy to use phone app

Cons: Some of the unit configuration can be tricky using the on screen UI because it will convert to a different sound mode when in the UI and block some options. Easy to over come by using the unit's LCD screen or the phone app.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an older 5.1 version of this receiver, the NR1402 from about five years ago. It is an amazing receiver for the size. Pleased to say that my initial impressions of the NR1608 is very nearly as good, they've just modernized the same chassis with lots of new features like Zone 2, Atmos and Sirius compatibilty. Otherwise it is the same, so it fits in the same space as my old model and still matches everything. It is very customizable and feature rich. And it looks good, is small and easy to move around , but does not feel cheap or flimsy. The one minor issue I have is that the NR1402 had nicer "feeling" buttons and a more elegant looking display. Also they did away with the navigation buttons on the NR1608 front panel, who knows why. These were very useful on the 1402 when the remote was out of reach. I guess the extra buttons went "to the cloud" as they seem to encourage one to control everything via the app now. I have not tried the app yet, but the included remote is exactly the same as the one with my old unit, and I can also control it with my same Logitech Harmony. Finally, Crutchfield is the only place online to buy your electronics like this... they are authorized resellers for Marantz and everything else they sell. Plus, because of their product research, I knew exactly what this receiver could and could not do before I ordered it. I like the rewards program too, it's generous. Keep up the good work Crutchfield.

Pros: Very compact, solid, feature rich, customizable.

Cons: Slightly lower quality "look and feel" than my older Marantz NR1402.

7-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Marantz NR1608 is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. The seven channel amplifier is rated at 50 watts with 2 channels driven (20-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.08% THD). The NR1608 features low-impedance drive capability, for excellent speaker control, and is compatible with 4-16 Ω speakers.

Amplifier Assignment: The NR1608's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Surround Back Left/Right for Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD 7.1ch playback.
    • Front Height: The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front Left/Right, Front Height Left/Right, Center, and Surround Left/Right for more front effects during 7.1ch playback.
    • Top Front/Middle: This amplifier configuration provides 5.1.2ch playback using top front or top middle speakers for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
    • Dolby Front/Surround: This amplifier configuration provides 5.1.2ch playback using front or surround Dolby Atmos enabled speakers.
    • Bi-Amp: You can configure the amplifier for front bi-amp operation to achieve a higher-quality 2-channel sound by connecting the receiver's front and surround back channels to your main front speakers (if compatible). Receiver will be limited to 5.1ch surround.
    • Zone 2: The NR1608's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital & DTS 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone.
    • Front B: A second set of front speakers can be powered by the surround back amplifier. Receiver will be limited to 5.1ch surround.

Compatible Digital Audio Formats: The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format
    HDMI 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit
    Multichannel Linear PCM 8ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit
Bitstream Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24
High Definition Audio Bitstream Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS Express
    Optical/Coaxial 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit
    Multichannel Linear PCM 6ch, 32-96Hz, 16/20/24-bit
Bitstream Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24

Immersive Surround Sound: The Marantz NR1608 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos or Dolby Surround and DTS:X, DTS Neural:X, or DTS Virtual:X (future firmware update).

    • Dolby Atmos: Dolby Atmos surround sound technology dispenses with channel-based coding in favor of more advanced object-based coding, giving the soundtrack designer the ability to precisely place sounds anywhere in the 3-dimensional space. Now you can enjoy this same award-winning technology at home with the NR1608 that lets you to connect a 5.1 surround sound speaker system and 2 additional overhead speakers or 2 Dolby Atmos elevation speakers for the ultimate home theater experience.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch or multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch, or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X: The latest immersive surround sound system, DTS:X features object-based audio coding that lets the soundtrack designer place sonic elements anywhere in the 3D acoustic soundspace, and provides for overhead speakers to deliver a stunning surround sound experience. Along with DTS:X decoding, the NR1608 features DTS-HD Master Audio decoding and other DTS audio technologies.
    • DTS Neural:X: Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format.
    • DTS Virtual:X: DTS Virtual:X bridges the gap between DTS:X and the reality of reality of most consumers' homes, allowing you to enjoy multi-dimensional sound regardless of room size, layout, or speaker configuration. DTS Virtual:X delivers an unprecedented acoustic performance regardless of speaker configuration or room layout with enhanced bass, crystal clear dialog, and enveloping sound thanks to Virtual Height & Virtual Surround processing based on psychoacoustics (not reflective surfaces). It will deliver an immersive sound experience regardless of room layout or speaker configuration (stereo, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, 7.1, etc). Best of DTS Virutal:X supports any content from DVD, Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray, and more.

Other Listening Modes: You can also choose from the one of the following Listening Modes.

    • Stereo Playback: Sound is output from the front left and right speakers, as well as the powered subwoofer. If multichannel signals are input, they are mixed down to 2-channel audio. The tone settings can be adjusted.
    • Virtual Surround: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
    • Source Direct: Source Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.
    • Pure Direct: Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audyssey Bronze: The NR1608 features the Audyssey Bronze suite of powerful DSP features - including MultEQ speaker/room calibration, Dynamic Volume, and Dynamic EQ.

    • MultEQ: Via the supplied measuring microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures all the speakers in your home theater during setup, including the subwoofer, and then generates multiple high precision DSP room acoustic correction filters, which together provide smoothest and most natural tonal balance, regardless of the brand or model of the various speakers. Up to six listening positions can be measured, configured, and recorded. MultEQ compensates for both time and frequency characteristics of the listening area based on "Audyssey Setup" measurement results. Selection is done from three types of compensation curves - Reference (default and recommended, L/R Bypass, Flat, and Off).
    • Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume features advanced psycho-acoustic processing to deliver clear dialog and wide range sound at reduced volume levels so that you can enjoy theater-level clarity at whatever listening level you choose.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ also features advanced DSP processing to deliver full range wide-band response, even at reduced volume levels. Dynamic EQ Reference Level Offset provides three offsets from the film level reference (5 dB, 10 dB, and 15 dB) that can be selected when the mix level of the content is not within the standard.

Audio Enhancements: The Marantz NR1608 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ: The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic, and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • M-DAX: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The M-DAX function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Level Adjustments: The NR1608 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The NR1608 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Outputs: The Marantz AV receiver features color-coded binding-post speaker terminals, dual sub outputs, and a front-panel headphone jack.

    • Color-Coded Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 4 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color-coded labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the NR1608's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: For compatibility with dual subwoofer home theater systems, the NR1608 features two non-discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system. The same signal is output from each sub output.
    • Front Outputs: This receiver features front channel line-level outputs to connect an external power amplifier to your front speakers for increased power output.
    • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Section

HDMI 2.0b: Featuring eight HDMI inputs (including one conveniently located on the front-panel) and one HDMI output, the NR1608 incorporates an advanced video section that features the latest HDMI 2.0b specification, including support for 4K/60 Hz Ultra-HD video, 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling, BT.2020 Wide Color Gamut, & High Dynamic Range (HDR). The NR1608 also features HDCP 2.2 compatibility, a requirement for 4K Ultra HD copy-protected content.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: The NR1608 supports up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second on all of its HDMI inputs and output (pass-through only). It will also pass a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signals via HDMI.
    • HDCP 2.2: All of the receiver's HDMI jacks support HDCP 2.2, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All of the receiver's rear-panel HDMI jacks support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. The front-panel HDMI only supports 4K 60/50Hz using format YCbCr 4:2:0 only.
    • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.

HDR Compatibility: HDR provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. The receiver support HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and HLG (via 2017 firmware update).

    • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
    • HLG (via 2017 Firmware Update): HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
    • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses no metadata, Dolby Vision utilizes dynamic metadata which adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. Dolby Vision supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits.

4K Video Upscaling: The AV receiver is equipped with a 4K video upscaler that allows standard definition (480i/480p) sources and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) sources to be upconverted to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels) for ultra high definition video images from any video source. This lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the NR1608 and then connect to your TV with just a single HDMI cable.

Other HDMI Features: The Marantz NR1608 AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function.

    • 3D Ready: The NR1608 AV receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the NR1608's HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AV receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-500ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 500ms to synchronize it with the video image.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.

Upgrading from a Marantz 1604 because I needed HDCP 2.2 capability for UHD switching. Also, one of the VERY few low profile AVRs that will fit into the space I have available that has decent specs and features. And as always, Crutchfield rocks in pricing and support. [ Robert  Jul 08, 2018 ]
Price finally came within comfort zone. [ Daniel  Jul 04, 2018 ]
Upgrading the electrical components of my home theater and wanted a smaller receiver compared to the behemoth that I currently have. My speakers are definitive technology bipolor towers that have powered subs so didnt need crazy power to run them. Now I wont have an issue selecting a tv and entertainment center to go along with the setup. The current pioneer receivers size limited what style tv stands I could get but not anymore. The size of it (height) worked for my application, most receivers are a lot taller. In talking to the rep he said it was a good receiver too. [ Daniel  Jun 16, 2018 ]
Needed slim profile unit for apartment downsizing. Marantz product reputation, Crutchfield's reputation and extensive online product information, including item-by-item model comparison charts, and the impressive unit specs themselves, combined with a $250 price reduction for the older model, made this purchase a no-brainer for us. Prize value, 4K Video up scaling plus 8 HDMI Inputs. Marantz makes wonderful reference quality stereo gear and I already own the Marantz AV8801 AV Processor which delivers nothing but outstanding performance. [ Stephan  May 21, 2018 ]
I saw good reviews on Marantz products, and the price at Crutchfield's. [ Charles  May 21, 2018 ]
My Onkyo SR-373 acts up far to often and constantly has troubel dropping HDR signals and switching resolutions causes a black screen for up to 30 seconds or more. Plus this will fit nicely in my entertainment stand as opposed to this monstrosity sitting on the floor next to it like a sore thumb because its too large to sit anywhere. [ Campbell  May 18, 2018 ]

I chose the NR1608 because Marantz has a solid reputation and the NR1608 received a lot of great reviews. Also, the NR1608 has all the features I want without a lot that I'll never use. [ Henry  May 04, 2018 ]
I needed a low profile AV Receiver and the Marantz NR1608 will fit into my existing stand. [ Kim  Mar 18, 2018 ]
My AV professional suggested I choose Marantz for my new Theater Room because he said it had "everything I need and nothing I don't for now and in the future". He said it was hands down the best bang for the buck. [ Anthony  Mar 03, 2018 ]

Very compact for small spaces. I have the NR1402 from about 2010 which was one of the original small form-factor receivers - it was really good-looking and well-made - it looks very similar to this new model - and the NR1402 was phenomenal. So I'm hoping this new model 1608 with more channels & features, will be as good. [ MATTHEW  Dec 21, 2017 ]

    Sorry, I have no idea... [ STEPHEN  Sep 09, 2018 ]
Hi Steve, yes they will play well together, and you will likely enjoy it. I pair my amp to a Marantz SR6011 for my front towers, and let the receiver handle the rest. The amp handles the demands of the towers better than my receiver can. The amp won't provide more 'volume', but more 'power, and stability' of the speakers. With a few tweaks to the level settings, you may find yourself listening to, and enjoying more music, as I have. [ JOHN D  Sep 06, 2018 ]
Nope. I have been loving the sound from my 47" floor standing Fluance signature speakers that are run by the 2 channel MM7025. Was watching Luke Cage, episode 7, I believe, when he and Iron Fist busted through that door. I have the volume level set at 55 when they hit the door, and I almost shook every glass off the shelves upstairs. I spent over $2500 in sound proofing the walls to keep from upsetting the family. Can't wait to let my son hear them. [ John  Sep 06, 2018 ]
Funny you ask this question. I use the MM7025 with a NR1607 currently for my fronts. No it will not drown out your center, and it sounds SO much better. I use this in our Master Bedroom setup with Definitive Technology SM65's in the front and a Definitive Technology Pro Center 2000. I bi-wire my SM65's with a set of Audioquest Rocket 33's from the MM7025 and use a Rocket 33 for my Center from the NR1607, use Pro Monitor 800's as my rears and NHT atmos speakers for my front Atmos speakers. Once you re-run through the Audyssey Calibration in full with the MIC (be sure to use a stand for best results) it balances it out beautifully and my fronts sound perfect, especially with quality cables bi-wired (bi-amp was better when these were my main speakers in our family room with 2 Rotel Amps but I upgraded and those fronts found there way to the Bedroom when I got this amp. Short answer, YES get the amp, it makes a world of difference, especially in 2 channel music listening. [ ANDREW  Sep 05, 2018 ]
You can use the Pre Out Front R/L outputs (see page 20 of the PDF user manual, section 10) with a powered sound bar for the front speakers, but the center would have to be powered by the receiver; or, you could use a passive 3 or 5 channel soundbar powered by the receiver. Crutchfield has several of these. [ Henry  Aug 20, 2018 ]
sorry don't know...not connectedto internet yet...been out of town almost constantly since purchasing and have not had time to use it much [ STEPHEN  Jul 05, 2018 ]
I don't know get answer to the first part but the second answer is "No" because Spotify doesn't stream high res audio. Even the highest Spotify stream is less than CD quality. [ Matthew  Jul 05, 2018 ]
I don't use streaming services, but according to the manual the NR 1608 "...can use many online music streaming services from the HEOS App. Depending upon your geographical location, there are several options to choose from." You can download the NR 1608 manual from the Marantz website. [ Henry  Jun 20, 2018 ]
No. The only streaming it can do is music via Spotify, Pandora, Tidal, Sirius, and I believe internet radio. You will need a separate device like ApplyTV, Chromecast, Roku, or FireTV to stream video content. [ Lawrence  Jun 20, 2018 ]
I don' tsee why not. We have hooked it up to a laptop for a presentation, and it is hooked to cable TV, so I think yes? [ Tonya  Jun 20, 2018 ]

The Marantz's built-in Bluetooth is for receiving audio transmitted to it from your Bluetooth devices (smartphone, tablet, computer). It does not transmit to external Bluetooth speakers or headphones. [ Ryan  Jan 10, 2018 ]  Staff
