Not just another amp

Sound that's warm, inviting, and wide open. That's what Marantz amplifiers have long been known for in audiophile circles. Their PM5005 integrated amplifier is a great introduction to this experience, offering sublime performance at an entry-level price. When you connect your sources and stereo speakers, you'll learn that not all amps are created equal.

Sophisticated design yields sweet sound

What's the secret to Marantz's legendary sound? Like their high-end amps, the PM5005 employs their unique Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module and current feedback architecture. This type of amplifier design is very fast and accurate, even when driving difficult speaker loads. This results in beautifully balanced stereo sound with a wide open soundstage. It also helps maintain extremely low distortion at high volume, so you can push your speakers a bit more than you could with less agile amps.

The PM5005 has six stereo analog inputs, including a phono input for connecting a turntable, and two sets of recording outputs. Eight binding posts allow connection of two sets of stereo speakers with front-panel A/B switching for use with speakers in two rooms.

Product Research

2-Channel Integrated Amp: The Marantz PM5005 is a two-channel integrated amplifier rated at 40 watts x 2-channels into 8-ohms and 55 watts x 2-channels into 4-ohms. This unit has a high-quality audio design such as a minimized signal path, use of high sound quality parts, and large power circuits; which is possible only in discrete audio components. The amplifiers themselves are custom-designed entirely with discrete components so you don't suffer any of the built-in limitations of off-the-shelf integrated circuits.

Current Feedback Design: Current Feedback amplification is a well known, Marantz' original circuit technology. The Current Feedback amplifier technology fits perfectly with the high requirements set for Super Audio software providing wide-bandwidth, high-speed reproduction. The impedance at the Current Feedback point is limited resulting in a very low phase shift. Marantz receivers and amplifiers equipped with Current Feedback can keep the phase compensation via Negative FeedBack (NFB) to a minimum, resulting in high through-rate, excellent transient response and superb sonic transparency for the full bandwidth. Unlike conventional Voltage Feedback amplification, the Current Feedback amplification makes the power amplifier in-sensitive to difficult loudspeaker loads.

Analog Inputs/Outputs + Phono: The PM5005 is fitted with a total of six analog stereo inputs (RCA) and two analog stereo outputs (RCA). There is a Tuner, CD, Network and Phono (MM) input; as well as two sets of Recorder inputs/outputs (1-2). All analog inputs are gold-plated for optimum signal transfer.

Gold-Plated Binding Posts: Equipped with two sets of speaker terminals, the PM5005 can drive two pairs of speakers, or it can be connected to one pair of bi-wiring compatible speakers, with one set of terminals for the low range drivers and the other set connected to the high range drivers. The PM5005 is fitted with eight gold-plated binding post terminals for long life and optimum signal transfer integrity. The binding posts will accept  banana plugs (single/dual), pin connectors, and bare wire (up to 10AWG).

Speaker Terminals Used Number Of Connected Speakers Speaker Impedance
Speakers A 2 (1 pair) 4-16
Speakers B 2 (1 pair) 4-16
Speakers A & B 4 (2 pair) 8-16
Speakers A/B Bi-Wired 2 (1 pair) 4-16

Headphone Amp: For superb sound quality with the widest range of headphone types, the PM5005 features a headphone amplifier that is able to handle just about any headphone type, regardless of impedance or sensitivity. The high quality gold plated 1/4" headphone jack is compatible with audiophile and studio headphones and adapters.

Tone Controls + Source Direct Mode: This unit has a tone control function for adjustment of bass (low frequency) and treble (high frequency) sound to produce your preferred sound. There is also Loudness feature which compensates for human hearing characteristics by boosting the bass and treble response at low volume levels to achieve a more pleasing tonal balance. The Source Direct function bypasses unneeded circuit stages (such as the tone controls) for the most direct audio path from input to output.

Aluminum/Glass-Reinforced Resin Front-Panel: The integrated amplifier's front panel uses a carefully chosen combination of aluminum and glass-reinforced resin to create a distinctive three dimensional appearance. Indirect reflecting blue LEDs indicating input selection, heighten its elegant appearance.

Remote Control: Featuring an easy to use ergonomic design, the elegant remote control can also be used to control the matching CD5005 CD player (sold separately), as well as controlling a network player (like the NA8005). Remote input and output terminals let you connect the PM5005 to other Marantz components, such as the matching CD5005 CD player, allowing you to place the PM5005 out of sight (such as in a cabinet) yet still providing full remote control capabilities. The IR (infrared) flasher port lets you connect the PM5005 to an external system remote controller.

AC Outlets: The Marantz PM5005 is fitted with two switched & one un-switched AC power outlets to connect your other A/V components.

Protection Circuitry: The PM56005's Protection Circuitry prevents damage to devices within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage occurs or over temperature for any reason. If a malfunction occurs in this unit, the power indicator blinks red and the unit switches to standby mode.

Auto Standby Mode: With the Auto Standby Mode "On", this unit will automatically enter the Auto Standby Mode after approximately 30 continuous minutes of no output from the speakers or headphones.

can i use a cassette deck with this too?
[ Mark  Nov 03, 2020 ]
3 answers
Yes. It has two "recorder" source selections that have both input and output connections. This model does NOT have a tape monitor, however.
[ Scott  Nov 03, 2020 ]
absolutely. i do and it sounds great
[ BEN  Nov 03, 2020 ]
Yes, you can use a cassette deck with this.
[ Charlie  Nov 03, 2020 ]
What tuner would go with the pm 5005?
[ Luther  Sep 25, 2020 ]
2 answers
I use a vintage Sansui TU-717 that I bought in Germany during Air Force days in early 80's. Although any tuner will work.
[ Mickey  Oct 08, 2020 ]
I highly recommend the NA6005 or the NA6006. You have everything in that player! AM/FM Pandora,Sirius XM, and Spotify. Plus internet radio from countries around the world. I have a NA6005. I love it. It goes perfectly with my PM5005. Hope that helps!
[ angel  Oct 08, 2020 ]
Can I run a vintage marantz receiver through this? I have a 2218B
[ Eric  Sep 08, 2020 ]
2 answers
You can run the tape line level RCA outs from the receiver to the inputs on the amp.
[ Doug  Sep 08, 2020 ]
Yes. Just put an RCA cable from the receiver (monitor out) into the tuner input. I did the same with an old yamaha receiver I had.
[ angel  Sep 08, 2020 ]
Can this amplifier be connected to wireless speakers over bluetooth or wifi? Is there an adapter needed to do so? We would like to connect it to some wireless speakers we bought from crutchfield some time ago and have not been able to connect to our other amplifier
[ Stephen  Jun 17, 2020 ]

Not that I know of. I had a really hard time getting this Amp to do what I wanted with my system. Still trying to tweak it to run the speakers outside on my deck and yard. . I like what it does b but I should have done a little more research.
[ WAYNE  Jun 18, 2020 ]
No the PM5005 does not have bluetooth. Only the Marantz PM7000N has bluetooth.
[ angel  Jun 18, 2020 ]
Would connecting a graphic equalizer to one set of recording input/outputs work? In old receivers, the recording outputs were labeled Tape/monitor, and work fine with an equalizer.
[ Audioholic  May 29, 2020 ]
1 answer
These do not work as monitor loops to feed the audio back into the integrated amp; just let audio be sent to a recorder. Monitor loops are hard to find these days. You might contact an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check if any of our current selection has it.

How do you connect a powered subwoofer without a subwoofer out?
[ Rod  Aug 25, 2019 ]
1 answer
Some subwoofers have speaker level inputs and outputs. In this case you would put the subwoofer in line with your speakers. If you do not have a powered subwoofer with speaker level inputs, you may not be able to to connect it. One of out advisors would be happy to assist you!

Can I hook this up to another amplifier? So I can hook more speakers up to my current system? I'm currently bi amping my towers with my marantz amp and is like to bi amp my surrounds as well but I don't have enough channels. So I'd like to use the pm 5005 to run my surrounds (totem mites)
[ Stu  Aug 01, 2019 ]
1 answer
This amp does not have "pre-amp" out, you may be able to use the tape out to kind of do what you are asking but it will present problems with volume control, etc. I think you would be more successful buying a model that has "pre-amp" out.
[ Charlie  Aug 13, 2019 ]
What is the difference between this one and the 6005, and why would I need the 6005 instead?
[ Gustavo  Jan 16, 2019 ]
2 answers
I only know about the 6005, so I can't compare. All I can say is that I am quite pleased by the 6005.
[ Michael  Jan 18, 2019 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.

Would this work with a pair of 6-ohm speakers without any problem?
[ T-Bone  Jan 18, 2018 ]

Great product handles my Definitive Technology BPs without a problem, they would send my Denon into shut down mode. Love this Marantz. The CD player is also great which I picked up.
[ Henry  Jan 18, 2018 ]
Would this pair well with Affordable Accuracy monitors from Philharmonic Audio?
[ William  Sep 06, 2016 ]

I am not an expert, I can tell you I bought it for some home made speakers and was simply looking for quality and value. The amp doesn't have all the modern features, but is high quality for the cost and that is what I wanted. I now have the speakers set up well with some fone tuning (added a resistor to the tweeter circuit)) using a mic and free software so the response is now level and smooth and they sound awesome using the Marantz amp! I would say the speakers are the most important component of any system Good Luck Andrew
[ Andrew  Sep 08, 2016 ]
This depends on several factors. First, the recommended power wattage to drive these speakers. They do better with four ohm rather than eight ohm speakers. The second is what your music preferences are. The third your listening volume levels. At four ohms, you're only getting about 55 watts per channel. At moderate levels, at least with my system, this integrated amp works fine. If your speakers go below 30 htm you may have problems driving them with this amp. The Marantz works well with light rock, jazz, vocals and some classical. Well produced heavy rock or metal might be too demanding. I play vynal exclusively and with good associated equipment you get a taste of what high end can offer. It is a good start for a neophyte. I believe Crutchfield has a good return policy should this not work out for you. You might also want to check with their sales reps first. Hope this helps.
[ John  Sep 07, 2016 ]
yes this is a very nice amp
[ CRAIG A  Sep 07, 2016 ]
Can't say for sure, but if they are efficient speakers that are not too bright, it should work well.
[ Chick  Sep 07, 2016 ]
Is the power sufficient to drive wharedale diamond 10.1?
[ Derek  Aug 01, 2016 ]
5 answers
it has plenty for me to drive acoustic suspension A.D.S. 's, but I don't play them nearly as loud as I did when I was younger. If memory serves me right, which is questionable, your Warfdales are more efficient than mine.
[ RICHARD M  Aug 15, 2016 ]
This amp should have no problem pushing those speakers it is a very powerful amp
[ CRAIG A  Aug 02, 2016 ]
I don't know how efficient the Wharfdale's are, so it is hard for me to answer. I can tell you that the Marantz drives my Klipsch R-28F floorstanding speakers very well.
[ Chick  Aug 01, 2016 ]
If your speakers are in a typical room and you don't play music at maximum volume, then the answer is yes.
[ Joe  Aug 01, 2016 ]
i'm running a pair of Polk TSx 330T speakers and happy (so far). do you mean Wharfedale Diamond speakers? i'm not familiar but i would think fhat the amp would be sufficient.
[ Peter  Aug 01, 2016 ]
Does this amplifier have a phono pre amp for converting to line level?
[ Rabbit  Jun 10, 2016 ]
6 answers
Yes, it has a phono preamp and I have been using it with my Denon DP-300F since I got it in November.
[ THOMAS R  Jun 12, 2016 ]
Not sure what you mean but I have no problem with sound level when using my record player. The PM5005 was made to be able to use a record player.
[ CRAIG A  Jun 11, 2016 ]
[ Joe  Jun 11, 2016 ]
Yes, it does. The gain of the phono stage is fixed, and I found it to be on the high side. It is probably adequate for most cartridges with a moderate output level, but may overload with high-output level ones.
[ Andrea  Jun 10, 2016 ]
Yes, on the back of the this amplifier there is a 'phono' RCA input so you can hook up a turntable that does not have it's own preamp or that runs through a separate phono preamp.
[ Jason  Jun 10, 2016 ]
yes for moving magnet cartridges
[ Chick  Jun 10, 2016 ]
Will this amp power these two sets of speakers: Bose 251 and Bose Free Space 51?
[ John  Feb 29, 2016 ]
3 answers
This amp will be fine.I play vinyl and cd's through two Klipsch and two Polk 6" speakers.sounds fantastic
[ GREG W  Mar 01, 2016 ]
yes it will work great this is a powerful amp but if you are worried about not having enough power look at the marantz pm8005
[ CRAIG A  Mar 01, 2016 ]
I have it connected to some way more demanding Dynaudio Audience 50 and the amp works like a champ. Those Bose are fairly "easy" so you should have no problems with it. If anything, I would say that it may be a little bit of an overkill (but that's just my opinion)
[ Ibai  Mar 01, 2016 ]
What wires will I need to buy to connect the PM5005 to a pair of Polk Audio TSi100?
[ Vishwas  Nov 12, 2015 ]
1 answer
Speaker wire is needed to connect them. You can use bare wire up to 10AWG, or you can put banana plugs (single/dual) or pin connectors on the end of that wire.
[ Paul  Nov 13, 2015 ]  Staff
Can this amp play both A/B Speaker outputs at the same time?
[ carter  Nov 09, 2015 ]
1 answer
It can play both A&B at the same time. However, with that configuration you will want to be sure that both sets of speakers are 8-ohms or higher to prevent damage to the amp.
[ Jeff  Nov 11, 2015 ]  Staff
Will these pair well with PSB Imagine XB's? Or is more power recommended?
[ Dan  Nov 06, 2015 ]
1 answer
This amp can power the speakers for a certain level of performance. I wouldn't jam out with it, but I do expect that you can get average listening levels with it while keeping the sound clear.
[ Paul  Nov 09, 2015 ]  Staff
Are these powerful enough for PSB Imagine XB's in a living room/main room setup?
[ Dan  Nov 05, 2015 ]
3 answers
Depends on how you listen to your music. As a general rule I would say yes. 89db sensitivity shouldn't be a problem. I use my PM5005 with Def Technology 7006 in a room that is 16X20. Puts out what I want and I listen to 70s rock, Celtic, and a few newer bands.
[ MIKE  Nov 13, 2015 ]
I power a pair of PSB minis through mine and it fills a fairly large room easily. This is a very efficient amplifier and should be a great match for your speakers.
[ Russell  Nov 06, 2015 ]
It should be fine. The XBs are very efficient, a characteristic of ported speakers. Don't let the 20 watt minimum worry you. The sensitivity spec of the XB is 89 dB for 1 watt, the same as my early 1980s DCM Time Windows 1s. My previous integrated amp was the legendary NAD 3020. It was rated for only 20 watts but had a feature that would temporarily allow 3 dB of headroom; 40 watts. It had red LEDs for 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 watts power output. 10 watts showing was extremely loud. Typical living room level was less than 5 watts. You'll like the Marantz a lot. After buying it I discovered I need a better CD player. :) I'll probably buy the matching CD5005.
[ DENNIS  Nov 06, 2015 ]
Ok, ao I only have a digital surround amp. The speakers are all hooked up to it. If I were to get a second amp, just for the vinyl, how do I hook up the speakers because they still must be available for movies and TV?
[ Paul  Aug 11, 2015 ]
2 answers
You would be better off buying a set of speakers and not trying to integrate both systems you will get a better sound this way
[ CRAIG A  Jun 11, 2016 ]
You would have to get a speaker selection switch that allows the speakers to be connected to one or the other of your amps, otherwise you could blow out one or both of the amps. The switch must be of the break-before-make types. Also I would recommend only using your front main speakers with the Marantz. If you can't find anything on the Crutchfield site, you can just get yourself two double pole double throw knife switches from electronics suppliers or other sources. Before you switch your speakers, you should probably turn off the power to both amps just to be safe.
[ Thomas  Aug 12, 2015 ]
Will either the Marantz pm5005 or pm6005 speaker terminals accept spade connectors on speaker wires?
[ chris  Jul 02, 2015 ]

[ THOMAS R  Jun 12, 2016 ]
As I recall, it has standard banana plug/screw type connectors, which can be used with either banana plugs, bare wire, or spade connectors.
