A high-resolution source for digital music

The Marantz SACD 30n is a motherlode of high-resolution digital sources in one component. It's a disc player with an innovative transport mechanism and compatibility with standard CDs, homemade discs, and SACDs. It's also a state-of-the-art network player that gives you access to popular streaming apps, internet radio, and Apple AirPlay 2. My hands-on experience with the Marantz SACD 30n

I was given an opportunity to demo this player at home, and I decided it was a perfect time to purchase my first Super Audio CD and see how it sounded in my own space. I knew I wanted to choose an album I am intimately familiar with, and had heard in many formats. I bought Dire Straits' 1986 album Brothers in Arms on cassette when it first came out, and have heard it on vinyl and high-res streaming, so when it popped up as an SACD best-seller in my research, I knew it was the logical choice.

I paired the 30n with the Rotel RA-1592 MkII integrated amplifier, and listened through my trusty pair of Wharfedale Diamond 11.1 bookshelf speakers. I live in an apartment, and the Wharfedales have always done an excellent job of providing clarity and accuracy at moderate volume levels, so I don't feel like I'm disturbing the neighbors.

Before I get into the music, I want to spare a moment to discuss the SACD-M3L transport mechanism, which features a very smooth, gliding open/close action. I often worry about the durability of this part of a disc player, but those fears were allayed. I've also had the experience where a disc almost rattles around in the CD tray in lesser machines — this one felt like it was almost gripping the disc when I placed it in the center, which was reassuring.

Now, the music was exceptional, full stop. I enjoy Mark Knopfler's precision as a guitar player, and each familiar note rang out pure and clear as I listened. This album won a Grammy award for its engineering in 1986, and I could really hear why. Each member of the band could be heard clearly when I engaged in critical listening, and producer's touches like chirring insects and rolling thunder added to the atmospheric effect. I was duly impressed with my first SACD experience.

What really makes this player a slam-dunk for me is its versatility. I was able to connect it to my home Wi-Fi to stream Spotify Connect and Qobuz, and it has Type-A and Type-B USB inputs so you can stream files stored on a thumb drive or computer. If I had a larger living space, you can bet I'd make good use of the multi-room HEOS properties, too. And the individual volume control for headphone listening was a nice touch.

That's a lot of functionality for a single component. Add in its exceptional performance and good looks, and it's definitely designed to appeal to a music lover like me.

Streamline your music with HEOS

HEOS Built-in technology lets you access all of your music — from your personal library, internet radio, and popular subscription services like Pandora®, Spotify®, and TIDAL.

And HEOS also lets you build a wireless multi-room audio system. Stream music to HEOS wireless speakers and components in different rooms, and control each room's speakers independently with the free HEOS app. The app lets you control playback, browse music sources, and select which rooms you want to use. Play the same music throughout your home, or listen to something different in each room.

Convenient connections

This player is designed to pair with the all-analog Marantz Model 30 integrated amp. To that end, it features an array of digital inputs, including:

  • 2 optical and 1 coaxial digital audio inputs (support for high-res PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz)
  • USB input (Type A) for USB flash drives (up to 24-bit/192kHz; DSD files up to 5.6 MHz)
  • USB input (Type B) for audio playback of stored music files (up to 32-bit/384kHz; DSD files up to 11.2 MHz)

There are two sets of analog outputs. A fixed-level stereo RCA output with gold-plated high-grade terminals lets you connect to a receiver, preamp, or integrated amplifier. Or you can use the variable-level RCA output for direct connection to powered speakers or a power amplifier.

Complete Digital Music Player: The Marantz SACD 30n is built to meet all the requirements of the modern audiophile who wants to combine a large digital music collection with the leading online music services. The SACD 30n combines a classic premium SACD player with a modern digital source's hub/preamp. It plays hi-resolution files including FLAC HD and DSD from your home network, local USB storage, and online sources such as streaming services and internet radio. It features Heos streaming, voice, and multi-room support, and DAC functionality, as well as Apple AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth integration.

HDAM Technology: Hundreds of hours of careful Sound Master tuning ensures the exquisite detail and musicality Marantz always delivers. SACD 30n is built on its own discrete circuit board, the Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Module (HDAM). By custom-curating hundreds of individual parts, rather than adopting an off-the-shelf solution, Marantz HDAM technology significantly outperforms standard integrated circuits to create the unique musicality you always expect from Marantz. Its low-noise pre-amplifier and dedicated headphone amplifier promise the Marantz sound any way you listen.

Exquisite Sound Tuning: The SACD 30n continues the renowned heritage of exquisite Marantz components. The SACD 30n is tuned by the Marantz Sound Master, who channels his passions, experience, and extraordinary ear into every aspect of its unsurpassed design. The SACD 30n continues Marantz's long tradition of delivering a best-in-class listening experiences for all your music soundtracks.

Robust Construction: The SACD 30n is constructed to the highest standards by Marantz. A solid steel chassis is complemented with sturdy side panels constructed from thick, heavy, non-magnetic aluminum and a rigid steel top cover eliminate interference. Robust, brass machined independent analog output terminals for fixed and variable ensure the best signal possible.

Marantz Musical Mastering DAC w/ Upsampling & Filtering: The SACD 30n integrates the Marantz Musical Mastering digital-to-analog converter that supports music files formats all the way up to 11.2MHz quad-DSD and 384kHz/32-bit PCM. The SACD 30n also employs MMM-Steam upsampling and MMM Filtering for the very best playback of almost any audio file every time.

  • MMM Conversion: PCM and DXD inputs are up-converted to DSD at 11.2MHz using the proprietary MMM-Stream converter within the player. The high-frequency signal produced is processed by the unique MMM-Conversion stage, used in place of a conventional DAC, to generate the analogue output. The MMM-Stream section of the process replaces the oversampling filters normally used in digital to analogue conversion and allows the implementation of the Marantz Musical Mastering filtering. Two system clocks ensure the most accurate up-conversion of the incoming signal, whether it’s from disc or the digital inputs, ranging from 44.1kHz to 384kHz. This unique configuration is tuned with, and for, ultimate sound quality reproduction with a highly accurate signal using dual 32bits floating point DSP for MMM-Stream. Sigma Delta Modulation allows a pure DSD-standard signal to be passed to the MMM-conversion section in the form of a very high-frequency stream of pulses. The design of the DSD-to-analogue filter feeds into the Marantz HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules) in the output stage for optimal sound quality.
  • MMM Filtering: The SACD 30n also features the unique Marantz Musical Digital Filtering (MMDF), inspired by their audiophile reference class technology. For Marantz, using standard digital filter solutions is not an option, as this filtering is crucial to the sound reproduction of digital input signals. As a result, they invested extensively in gaining expert knowledge, leading into highly-acclaimed Marantz Music Mastering technology used in award-winning Premium Range 10 Series products. Adapted for the SACD 30n hardware design, the solution is called Marantz Musical Digital Filtering. Two selectable, digital filter characteristics cater for different tastes, and each handle even the minutest of detail with loving care in the digital audio signal, transforming new media files into the finest of high-resolution playback.
    • Filter 1: Offers a short impulse response for both pre-echo and post-echo. Suitable for large information content audio. Produces a deep sound image with clearly-defined positional relationships of the audio sources.
    • Filter 2: This characteristic is known as asymmetrical impulse response. The post echo is slightly longer than the pre-echo. The sound characteristics is more analog like.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The SACD 30n is outfitted with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and one coaxial (RCA) digital input for connecting your existing digital audio source components. The optical and coaxial digital inputs support 2ch PCM audio files up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Note: The optical & coaxial digital inputs do not support Dolby Digital, DTS, or other multichannel surround formats.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Outputs: The Marantz SACD 30n is also equipped with one optical (toslink) digital output and one coaxial (RCA) digital output. These digital outputs allow you to bypass the unit's internal DAC, if you have a higher quality external DAC or receiver/integrated amplifier with higher-quality DAC built-in.

Fixed & Variable Analog Outputs: The SACD 30n provides independent fixed and variable stereo RCA outputs. The separate low noise variable level outputs can be used to connect active speakers or a power amplifier direct input, letting you use it as a multisource digital player/pre-amplifier. Volume can be controlled from the included remote or via apps. When not in use, the preamp power supply is turned off to avoid any noise or interference.

Discrete Headphone Amplifier: Enjoy music directly from your headphones with a completely redesigned, high-quality headphone stage that features a dedicated amplifier module using exclusive Marantz HDAM-SA2 circuitry with exceptional SNR (Signal-Noise-Ratio). To work with a wider variety of headphones, the gain factor can be adjusted to three established presets (Low/Mid/High), making it possible to drive low to high impedance headphones seamlessly. If no headphone is connected to the unit, the headphone amplifier is turned off to avoid noise or interference..

Disc & USB Playback

High Quality Transport Mechanism: At the heart of the SACD 30n is a new, innovative SACDM-3L transport mechanism, engineered solely for the best possible performance when playing SACDs, CDs, and music stored on data discs. This new mechanism promises exceptional sound quality from conventional CD and SACD discs, and allows listeners to enjoy their own created high-resolution audio compilation data discs. While the SACD/CD source is not being used, the power supply for the disc drive is turned of to avoid noise or interference.

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz SACD 30n supports playback of SACD, CD, CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD-R/RW discs. The SACD 30n is compatible with a variety of high-resolution and compressed audio files on a data disc. It can recognize up to 1,000 folders and up to 2,000 files per folder on a data disc.

Roon Tested: Roon is a feature rich music library and playback application that compiles all the music files available to your network and makes them easily available to play on the Marantz player and any other Roon enabled audio devices. Roon manages digital music files (including FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, and DSD) collected on hard drives and networked storage devices. It can also integrate your iTunes library, and optionally merge with the Tidal music streaming service. Roon software can be installed on your Windows or Mac computer, while a Roon Remote app is available for Apple iOS 11.0+ and Android OS 5.0+). When you access the Roon software or remote app, it will display your complete audio library together with its metadata and artwork along with the available Marantz player and other Roon enabled devices. Simply select the music you wish to play and the Marantz player or Roon device in which you want to hear it on.

Notes:

  • To use Roon you will need a Roon Core running on the same network as the Marantz player. The Core is media server software that runs on your computer, NAS, or component (like Nucleus or ROCK - sold separately), located on the network within your home.
  • Make sure your Marantz product has the latest firmware/software update installed.

Q
Can the Marantz30n play UHQCDs in 44.1kHz/16bit resolution? I believe, MQA-enabled hardware/software is necessary to harness the full potential of those Hi-Res CDs.
[ Mark  May 11, 2021 ]
1 answer
A
Do not believe the 30N supports MHQ in its internal DAC - I do not use MHQ but there is a regular upgrade of internal software which could introduce it if Marantz wanted (my OPPO 205 received an update for using MHQ via download). 30N manual - This section explains how to playback music files that are recorded onto a CD-R/-RW or DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW. 0 There are many music distribution sites on the Internet allowing you to download music files in MP3 or WMA (Windows Media® Audio) format. The music (files) downloaded from such sites can be stored on CD-R/- RW or DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW discs and played on this unit. 0 The audio format types and specifications supported by this unit for playback are as follows. See "Playable files" (v p. 127) for details. 0 MP3 0 WMA 0 AAC 0 WAV 0 FLAC 0 Apple Lossless 0 AIFF 0 DSD

Q
how do i connect a sub to this?
[ abcde  Apr 12, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
Well, you don't. You will need an integrated amp or a preamp with that capability. For example, I use Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum III integrated that has a separate set of variable output RCAs that I use exactly for that. Marantz does have a set of variable level RCAs (in addition to a fixed ones) but enabling it somewhat degrades sound quality (even user manual mentions this gently). But again, that would not work for sub only in any case.
