About the LG OLED65C8PUA

Already great, OLED just keeps getting better

Last summer I bought my first TV in many years. I'm picky about picture quality, but after doing several side-by-side comparisons, my choice was easy: I bought an LG 4K OLED. All these months later I still find myself remarking to anyone within earshot, "Man, that's a great picture!"

The 65" OLED65C8PUA is sure to be one of the most popular TVs in LG's 2018 OLED lineup. Compared to last year's model, it has more powerful video processing, plus some advanced smart TV conveniences. Plus, the initial price is about a thousand bucks less than last year's model at launch.

Why OLED rocks — infinite picture contrast, absolute black, and wide viewing angles

Each and every OLED pixel — actually every sub-pixel — can switch off completely, producing absolute black. So far, OLED is the only screen technology that can pull off this difficult feat, and it's why OLED TVs can deliver such remarkable contrast and black levels. For watching movies in a dark room, LG's OLEDs are just about unbeatable.

The OLED65C8PUA also delivers brilliant colors, covering nearly 100% of the P3 color format used for digital cinema and HDR movies. Colors pop, and thanks to the OLED65C8PUA's impressive peak brightness and advanced anti-glare screen coating, you'll see a vivid picture even in bright rooms. And if you like to watch TV with family or friends, you won't mind giving up the center seat — OLED images maintain exceptional contrast and color even for viewers seated off to the sides.

One of the OLED65C8PUA's key improvements over LG's 2017 models is the new Alpha 9 Intelligent Processor. It reduces noise, and constantly monitors and corrects color and contrast. But its most noticeable improvement relates to motion processing. The OLED65C8PUA gives you the ability to remove jerky judder in side-to-side camera pans without adding the artificial-looking "soap opera effect." That's a big deal, in my book. I wish my OLED had that capability.

Enjoy a premium HDR experience with more content

TV content enhanced with HDR (High Dynamic Range) is getting easier to find all the time. Its expanded picture contrast range adds noticeable visual punch to HDR-enhanced movies and shows streamed from Netflix® and Amazon Instant Video. And virtually every 4K Blu-ray movie has HDR.

The OLED65C8PUA not only supports the required HDR10 format, but also the more sophisticated Dolby Vision™ format, which is a dynamic system that is able to adjust brightness and color levels in response to the video signal on a scene-by-scene basis. LG's Active HDR circuitry analyzes and optimizes HDR10 content scene by scene, bringing it closer to what Dolby Vision achieves.

Let your TV be the hub for all your connected devices

The '65C8PUA's built-in web apps give you instant access to a nearly limitless selection of entertainment including streamed video from services like Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu. LG's AI ThinQ® intelligent voice control can process hundreds of voice commands. Just speak directly into the Magic Remote's mic to operate the TV as well as a variety of compatible smart devices. This TV is also compatible with Google Home and Amazon Alexa voice control assistants.

LG's motion-sensing Magic Remote is simple and fun to use. You can point, click, scroll and even speak into the remote to find exactly what you want, searching across apps, movies, TV shows and the web, all at the same time.

Use the Sanus MountFinder™ to see a list of wall-mounts that work with your specific TV.

Bought this for the great room in a new construction home that won't be done for another month, and couldn't resist firing it up as soon as it arrived. Incredible picture, easy to use remote, and quick to set up with all of our existing apps. Crutchfield service was awesome as usual!

4 stars because the box that the television came in was a pretty beat-up. Thank goodness the TV was fine though! It's amazing actually. The only issue, which is a personal problem, is that my dog is obsessed with the magic remote. It's akin to a laser pointer on your new fancy TV. I've always loved the customer service at Crutchfield and it is the only place I would even consider buying a major electronic.

4.25 to 4.5 Star rating. First - great price and really fast shipping from Crutchfield! TV was truck delivered and in very good condition (didn't look like the usual box was used for basketball or soccer practice..). It is a two person assembly/setup, so make sure you have an extra pair of hands available. I like that the shipping container lifts off after removing shipping straps - no cutting of box required. First negative - assembly instructions are lacking. They have an initial unpacking/assembly sheet at top of inside , but better instructions inside the baggie containing the remote and other components. Still, just picture based - just study it for a bit and it then makes sense. It's an OLED so beautiful black levels!! Colors are vibrant and fairly accurate out of the box settings using ISF mode. I will do a calibration after 100 hours. I do see a little black level crushing and a bit of soap-opera-effect but haven't seen an explicit motion refresh rate setting? Black level uniformity is not perfect but within range of the other review sites results. Menus are speedy but the cursor wand take a bit to get use to. Overall - very pleased with this TV. Didn't think I could get an OLED in my budget but this 2018 C8 model from Crutchfield made it with a little stretch. Watched my first show encoded with HDR and the TV picked it up and it was really cool to see the bright highlights for windows, sun, etc.

Pros: OLED! Black levels, Off angle viewing, Closeout pricing

Cons: Needs calibration (virtually all displays do), comprehensive setup and menu guides lacking, reflective screen

    Great picture, awful ARC

Chris from Ft Myers, FL on 7/26/2019

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Amazing TV. Picture is great, but the ARC always fails. This is my second LG C8 65 I've purchased now (most recently from Crutchfield) and the 2nd one also failed on ARC. The receiver I was using was working fine when I first got the TV and then after about 20 hours of use, it stopped. This means no "return audio" through HDMI 2, when using smart apps on the TV. Yes, I have other ways of getting to the streaming services I want, but the Smart TV apps SHOULD work for the ARC channel. I've tested multiple formats, different hdmi cables, and still nothing. I'm using a newer Onkyo receiver in the living room and a 1 year old Onkyo (with the same LG C8) in the bedroom. Super disappointing. I don't want to return this TV and get the Samsung Q80R (cuz I feel the LG has a better picture, but I don't want to hold onto something for 8-10 years and keep it when its defective. Its quite disappointing.

Pros: Amazing picture, black levels, color saturation

Cons: ARC doesn't work after 20 hours of use

Great TV but learn from the actions of others...

Excellent picture and easy to set up. Stand assembly should be done with 2 people and requires re-use of the box and styrofoam inserts, so keep all that in order when unpacking. Not great sound but far better than the aged Sony LED Bravia it replaced. The default settings result in a picture too dark for a bright room, so its necessary to use the pre-set Bright Room mode and still dial up the brightness a few clicks. Once that's all done its TV heaven. Only two surprises: 1) I planned on a Sonos Beam soundbar but the stand is short so a Beam in front of the TV will cover an inch of screen. The stand also prevents cords from the Beam to pass through since its a center-mounted base, not Beam-friendly legs like you see in all of the Sonos ads. Bottom line with a Beam and likely any other soundbar you need another spot to put it if your new LG OLED is stand-mounted. 2) I planned on changing from DirecTV satellite to DTV Now but I didn't know that DTV is in bed monogomously with Samsung and is not directly compatible with any other brand TV. So its off to buy a Roku stick, which feels like a waste for such a nice TV with rocket scientist intelligence. But overall I'm very happy with the LG and would recommend it.

Pros: Excellent picture, easy to set up, very intuitive control options.

Cons: LG executives need to go on a date with DirecTV and get the DTV Now app pre-loaded. That only Samsung gets this app is contractual garbage.

The TV is awsome. Breathtaking picture. Cant believe the screen is flatter than my iPhone. connecting sound bar and direct tv and internet was seamless, the thing is smart. Programing the direct tv remote was also seamless and I finally have one remote that controls everything. One exception is if I want to fine tune the soundbar I need to use the remote that came with it. Very pleased with the TV and thank you Crutchfield for your assistance with selecting it and the sounbar.

I bought this tv to replace my aging 55 inch plasma. This LG OLED picture is really nice, super crisp image, and I thought the dark scenes were dark on the plasma, this OLED screen is true black, shows great contrast in scenes. The design is really nice, set up is a breeze, nice logic to the menu, and I was surprised how good the sound is from the tv internal speakers (several different sound modes available to choose) (though I have a 5.1 surround system for movies). Crutchfield staff was knowledgable and helpful as usual, were key in helping me choose the OLED over LED since my living room is wide, and I frequently view off angle and there is no loss of quality.

    From plasma to OLED

If you are one who likes plasma screen television and are ready to upgrade please do yourself a favor and save your money to buy an OLED. I have mine and have had it for a week with some tweaking for better picture quality than what is preset. There are several good YouTube videos to help and please use them. What I started with vs where I am now is much better. I bought the 65" and yes it's bigger but the clarity even in non 4K programs is excellent. I never saw anything from Samsung that I liked near as well and after some friends having problems with them I wasn't a big fan starting out. LG has a great probiotic line and I love how thin this thing is. It will be wall mounted soon so the home theater environment will be better too. Now after 10 years I also realize that it is now time to upgrade my receiver as it ( my old receiver) doesn't have near enough HDMI connections.

Pros: Superior picture quality Easy to learn system

Cons: Standard sound is substandard for a television of this price point. I need a new sound bar or center channel speaker that will mount to the walk mount.

As advertised, the picture quality is more impressive than I thought. Upgraded from LCD, no contest. Assembly requires two people. Instructions a little confusing, but you don't have to be a savant. Crutchfield staff were easy to work with in order process. Enjoy.

Pros: Wow factor, up and running in 2 hrs, signal runs thru receiver with no hiccups.

Cons: Single remote with Directv is challenging, if not impossible.

I have been looking at the OLED TV's for a couple of years now. After very little debate on how I like the picture quality and the rich colors. Crutchfield offered the LG C8 at a price I couldn't pass on. Unboxing and set-up was a breeze. It replaced a Panasonic plasma and there was really no comparison. The way the room was set-up a 50 inch plasma was as large as I dare to go so you didn't get the screen door effect. No worries for that with the OLED it is sharp no matter how close you get so I got the 65 inch I always wanted. This TV does not disappoint. I've had it for about a month now and everytime I turn it on it's like a whole new viewing experience. Crutchfield customer service was very helpful got the TV and accessories delivered in less than a week. Unbelievably light weight but must be handled by two people do to size. Once arrived it was unboxed hung and being watched in less than 2 hours. The definition is amazing sometimes it's like you could just step right into the picture. Thanks Cruthfield Very Happy!

Pros: Beautiful picture, Lots of tuning features, Easy set-up, very light for the size.

Having a 60" Signature Kuro for many years gives you a clear idea on what a "good tv" looks like. Vizio P-65E1 was "ok" in 4k/HDR but very frustrating when connected to an AV receiver, sound skips, and picture lacks depth and accuracy in colors. Now, the LG C8 fixed the issues and impressed enough to make tv watching an enjoyable experience. Of course, it needs isf calibration after few months of breaking in, however, the settings provided from rting.com is good for now. Highly recommended for the discounted price.

Pros: Accuracy/Compatibility with other AV Products

Cons: Not much other than getting stuck in Korean language during initial setup, avoid miss-clicking fixes the Cons.

Recently purchased this TV, I had a Pioneer Kuro Plasma. This new panel has darker blacks, and has vivid colors. You also feel like the people are right in the room with you, almost like 3D. Added Google Assistant. I have Amazon and am happy with the streaming functions. I am adding Netflix. I will try next to cast photos and albums to this TV. I wall mounted it so it can extend 24 inches which worked out great. Extremely happy with this TV.

Pros: Color, image quality, features, streaming. Google Assistant.

    Best television I've owned.

Coming from the last two generations of Panasonic plasma sets, this is the best TV I've owned. The picture has fantastic color, detail, and depth. It's extremely immersive with quality HD/4k source material. The virtually frameless design is modern and attractive, while incredibly thin and lightweight (be careful when lifting/handling) compared to older tech, especially plasma. Connectivity is generous, and while I'm always connected to my home theater for audio, a quick test of the internal speaker far exceeded what I expected to come from the thin chassis design. All functional aspects of this set completely live up to their promise and set a new standard for me. The areas I found slightly less than perfect were the menus and remote. I found the menu layout to be a little less intuitive than I was used to on my previous Panasonics, the magic remote function is a little tricky to master, and the remote itself has no backlight plus is shaped in such a way that I always seem to pick it up pointing backwards. Minor complaints, to be sure, but I wanted to be thorough. I'd have given 4 1/2 starts if that was an option. Wonderfully satisfying TV set overall!

Pros: Picture, design, connectivity, and overall performance.

Cons: Minor issues with menu structure and remote design.

So far so good! Picture is of course amazing as expected. People and objects appear 3D. I had a custom cabinet built to accommodate the 77" model and decided last minute to drop down to the 65 as I couldn't justify the price jump of literally 2.5x to get from the 65 to the 77 ($3k with tax and ship versus $7500 with tax and ship). The "magic" remote is actually nice with the pointer/cursor that quickly moves around the screen. One can also move amongst the options the old fashioned way with left/right/up/down arrows too. SmartTV apps are nice but redundant of my Apple TV (which is already redundant of my Roku) - there are pros and cons to using each streaming source. Disappointed Pandora is not amongst the LG apps. Really like the HDMI ARC for when I'm using LG's streaming apps (and my forthcoming attic antenna for local channels since I don't do CATV or satellite). It sends audio from TV backwards to my ARC-equipped Yamaha receiver for sound distribution to home theatre speakers using the same HDMI cable my receiver forward-feeds the TV for Blu-Ray, AppleTV, Roku, etc. In that situation, the LG remote also controls my Yamaha receiver's power and volume which is nice.

Pros: Picture Remote HDMI ARC feature

Cons: No Pandora in LG app store

The LG OLED65CC8PUA is hands down the best TV I've ever owned. Bright, great black color, and immerse image. My fiance hates watching horror movies on this because you feel like you are in the movie. It is that good. People left bad feedback on the brightness but you can adjust that by choosing the type of feature on the TV. We hung it over the fireplace and it was light and easy. Do not grab the front of the screen lift from the base when you open the box. That is why people get dead pixels. I have zero dead pixels or clusters from following the directions. I feel over-all this is the best you can get for your money. I'm very happy with my purchase. Love it!

The picture on this television is every bit as good as all the glowing reviews you have read so I won't give you more of he same. I debated between the LG OLED and the Samsung Q9. What I liked most about the Samsung was that the picture was almost as good as the LG, it would be fine in the brightest room and burnin would not be a problem. My concern with the LG was possible burn-in and that it would be in a room with large glass doors making the room very bright during the day. I have a Pioneer Elite plasma in another room that I have had for over 10 years without experiencing burn-in. Since I don't play video games I decided that burn-in should not be a problem for me. Now that I have had a few days to watch under different conditions I can tell you that the LG picture looks great in a bright room. In a darker room with a 4K blu-ray and my surround sound system, this set is better than going to the movies and my foot doesn't get stuck to the floor. I couldn't be more satisfied with this purchase.

Pros: Beautiful picture, nice remote, and lots of picture modes to adapt to different viewing conditions.

    Cons: Possible burn-in

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This TV is visually stunning. The clarity and colors on our 65" C8 make the screen really pop and stand out. And this happens on standard definition broadcasts. High definition broadcasts are remarkably better than anything we've had in the past. When we view any 4K broadcasts, we can't help but be amazed. Granted, we came from viewing a 43 inch plasma TV, but we also reviewed and viewed most every competitor out there over 3 months. This TV hit all the must-haves for us. The unpacking was a bit of a challenge, but after a few youtube video's, it pretty simple. The one thing that I might call a negative on this thing is how thin the screen is. Yikes, it's thin at the edges, especially on top. Moving this to another room or house will need some careful planning. The sound quality from this C8 is acceptable and gets a bit better with a decent sound bar and a subwoofer. Like any decent TV in a dedicated media room, it really needs the power and separation of a 5.1 or more sound system. But again, the internal speakers do a better job than most internal speakers in TV's at this size and price point. We really do like this C8 and have no regrets on our purchase. Would certainly do it again.

Pros: Picture quality, upscaling, options and easy setup

Cons: thin screen does concern me, especially if it gets moved to a new room or home

This TV replaced an 8 year old 55" Sony Bravia Plasma that I moved to another area of the house. The 65" screen is a noticable improvement of the 55" screen it replaced. The local cable company's signal is pretty good so the Hi Definition picture is really clear with a lot of detail. Blue Ray and ultra high definition is incredible to put it mildly. The TV was easy to unpack and set up was easy enough to manage but I suggest you watch the unpacking video on Crutchfield's website. It will make unpacking a lot easier. Final set up on the TV is pretty easy just follow the prompts on the screen. I was disappointed to find that my Bose Sound Bar isn't compatible with the TV remote. If my cable company remote works with my sound bar why can't LG make it happen? The TV's internal speakers sound isn't all that great so reduce TV volume to "0" and use external speakers are a must to get the best TV experience. If I can turn the internal speakers off on a $350.00 Panasonic TV in my bedroom why doesn't LG give me the option on a $2500.00 TV? The TV is supposed to be compatible with Amazon's Alexa but I've only been successful in getting Alexa to turn the TV on and Off so I'm not sure if that's all Alexa can do or if I'm missing something. Notice all the things I've fussed about don't have anything to do with the quality of the TV's picture and aren't deal killers. By the way Crutchfield Rocks! Great selections, competitive price and superb customer service!

Pros: Picture quality is incredible. Very slim profile. Light weight Easy TV remote Interface with on screen prompts

Cons: Internal Speakers are Just Ok and can't be turned off. Never gotten the Alexa interface app to work properly. Control interface with other components (Soundbars, etc) seems to be somewhat limited.

Here are my initial thoughts about this TV after having it for less than a week. Picture - absolutely amazing. Playing the Shape of Water Blu-ray (1080p version - non-HDR) through a high end Blu-ray player, the picture was superb - incredible detail and virtually 3D. Don't know whether the TV or Blu-ray player did the upscaling, but it definitely demonstrated what a great screen this is. Sound - acceptable but you really do need an external speaker system to go along with the screen. That of course brings its own issues. HDMI ARC works well except for lip synch issues - the controls to fix this on the LG end didn't really work - just a number system with no indication of the number of milliseconds the numbers mapped to - changing this to any value never fixed the synch. Luckily my HDMI ARC destination has really good lip sync controls and I used this to solve the synch issue - approx 50 ms delay on my system. Note that there is no easy way to stop the LG from not outputting any sound - sound is always output to internal speakers, optical or HDMI ARC - this is no obvious output off option. Remote/Settings. Took a long time to get my head around this - the GUI is not particularly user friendly and the TV manual was thin to say the least. Installation was reasonably easy but only because I saw a great You Tube unpacking video so saw others do it. The installation manual shows diagrams but minimal text and not always easy to see what the diag

Pros: The picture is fantastic. HD programs upscale beautifully

Cons: Sound could be better but you really need a superb home theatre or stereo system to go with this anyway. Wish the remote had illumination.

I purchased my LG OLED television after the local elevation (> 7,100 feet) ultimately defeated my previous one, a Samsung plasma television. The demise of my plasma television provided me an opportunity to research new TV technologies and to increase screen size. After consulting several reliable consumer references, I chose to purchase the LG OLED65C8PUA from a known and reliable vendor: Crutchfield. What an astounding television. All of the references that I consulted praised the quality of the picture, the generous viewing angles, as well as other laudable attributes, but a few provided aesthetic gripes about the television stand. I love this television and I love the aesthetics of the stand. Moreover, I appreciate the Crutchfield customer service, especially the technical customer service. Before I purchased my television, I contacted both Crutchfield's customer service and technical customer service with questions pertinent to my purchase. In both cases I received valuable advice. Great television and great customer service. Priceless!

Pros: Sublime picture quality and wonderful versatility and aesthetics.

Cons: Nothing substantial, though I had a bit of a learning curve learning in how to consistently and effectively use the remote control to find and change some tv settings.

Best TV You Can Get Right Now

Got this to replace my Sony 930E which died after 6 months and Sony bought it back. This TV is sublime, the 930 was a great TV don't get me wrong but the absolute black that oled produces gives the C8 an edge in just about every movie I watch in my dark theater room. It didn't take much to dial it in and get it looking gorgeous in the Technicolor Master setting or in game mode. It's noticeably much brighter than older OLED TVs in hdr and I've had no problems with image retention even after long gaming and movie sessions. Processing wise I've actually had less problems with banding compared to the Sony and I feel the picture is overall sharper looking, especially on things like in game text or subtitles on anime. Not to say the Sony handles those things bad, but this just handles things better. Motion handling is great too after a bit of tweaking in the user setting of TruMotion, panning can be very jumpy otherwise (this is because of OLED having nearly instant pixel response) The built in apps, although limited are some of the nicest and fastest loading I've used to the point of me using them over my roku, the fact it supports Atmos over ARC is great too. The menu system is quite nice and the magic remote works way better than I expected. Dolby Vision support is also far better implemented on the LG which is a good thing as Dolby Vision makes this TV shine even more. Overall at the current price its the best TV you can get hands do

Pros: Image quality, smart apps, ease of use, magic remote, styling, input lag for gaming. Dolby Vision support and Atmos over ARC for streaming video.

Cons: Smart app selection could be better but it's no big deal. I've had a few problems with HDMI-CEC but to be honest that's not uncommon to me.

OLED is the great leap forward in TV technology. If you are debating between "standard" LED and OLED, go OLED. It's worth it. The depth and richness of the image are amazing. Plus Crutchfield is really responsive and easy to work with on the purchase and shipping.

Great Blacks and Picture, Remote Not So Much

This is my first LG OLED and I must say the Blacks are outstanding and the colors pop! When connected to my OPPO UDP-203 Blue Ray player and play a 4k disk you can't get a better picture experience. I gave it 5 stars due to the picture quality. The only think I don't use or care for is the Magic Remote which is a bit clunky for my taste and give the remote 3 stars due to the pointer reaction being a bit all over the place and not easy to control , instead I use a Harmony Universal Remote which to me is faster and easier to set up and use, just a personal preference.

    Pros: Blacks, Blacks, Blacks!

    Cons: Remote

Disappointed. Arc does not work. Optical output does not work. Smart tv sound will not output to AV Receiver. Internet blogs describes this as a known problem. LG tech support finally indicated its a known problem. Remote control neat gadget but a joke. When watching tv for us that just want to punch a button instead of playing with a mouse or talking there is no option. LG will not recognize Comcast (xfinity) cable box. LG & Comcast announced last fall that that they would offer app on lg smart tv to eliminate cable box. Where is it.

OLED TV: "OLED" means organic light-emitting diode, named for the advanced material used in the TV's screen. The secret to OLED is this unique light-emitting diode structure with its electroluminescent layer, a special film made from an organic, carbon-based compound that emits its own light when hit with an electric current. A thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane switches each specific pixel on and off. This configuration enables a thinner, lighter form factor, higher resolution and big, home theater-ready screen sizes. Because OLED TVs do not require a backlight, pixels that are switched off are truly black, so OLED achieves deeper black levels and a higher contrast ratio when compared to LCD and LED-LCD TVs with conventional backlighting. OLED technology also increases energy efficiency.

    • Pixel Level Dimming w/ Infinite Contrast Ratio: LG OLED TV's self-lighting pixels switch off completely for Pixel Level Dimming. As the first display technology that allows self-lighting pixels to switch on and off individually, OLED offers the first "Infinite" contrast ratio. With no light bleed, LG OLED achieves absolute black levels, for Infinite Contrast. Contrast ratio measures the range from the brightest whites on the screen to the darkest blacks. The deep blacks will offer a greater sense of realism and depth on all content.
    • 10-Bit Panel (Billion Colors) w/ Wide Viewing Angle: Thanks to its 10-bit panel, the LG OLED TV is capable of displaying billions of rich colors with fine steps of gradation. With so many more colors to express, you'll see a picture that is more detailed and natural when compared to conventional 8-bit panels. The 10-bit panel even holds up from wide viewing angles, so now everyone in the room will have an ideal view of the action.
    • True Color Accuracy Pro w/ Intense Color: The LG OLED TV's True Color Accuracy Pro & Intense Color Technologies deliver a color palette that virtually matches those seen in today's high-end digital cinemas, thanks to its 4 Color Pixel Technology. LG's 4 Color Pixel technology adds a white sub-pixel to the conventional 3 color red, green, and blue that enhances both color range and accuracy. This considerably improves the OLED pixels' ability to express the realistic colors and represents a giant step ahead of conventional flat-panel displays.
    • Ultra Luminance Pro w/ High Brightness: Ultra-HD picture quality becomes even more dynamic with an extended range of brightness, thanks to LG's Ultra Luminance Pro technology. By enabling higher peak brightness and an enhanced contrast ratio, Ultra Luminance Pro makes 4K & HDR images even more striking.

α (Alpha) 9 Intelligent Processor: LG, the industry leaders of OLED TVs, made their OLED televisions even better by developing the α (Alpha) 9 Intelligent Processor. LG's most powerful processor ever provides true-to-life images with incredibly rich colors, sharpness and depth to deliver the ultimate picture quality with more realism. As a result of the new image processor, 2018 LG OLED TVs can display any content at maximum quality for a truly spectacular viewing experience

    • 4-Step Noise Reduction: A core innovative element of the α (Alpha) 9 is the four-step process of noise reduction, which boasts twice as many steps compared to conventional techniques. This algorithm allows for greater finesse in noise reduction, improving the clarity of images affected by distracting artifacts and enabling more effective rendering of smooth gradations.
    • Advanced Color Mapping: The processor also improves color performance, thanks to the advanced mapping capabilities making colors look closer than ever to the original content. The improved color correction algorithm allows for more natural colors by expanding the reference color coordinates seven-fold compared to before.
    • 120 Hz Frame Rate: The α (Alpha) 9 processor is designed to support high frame rate (HFR) for producing smoother and clearer motion images at 120 frames-per-second (fps) for better rendering of fast-action content such as sports and action movies. As a result, you get even the fastest action to be dependably crystal clear and virtually blur-free.

4K Cinema HDR w/ Enhanced Dynamic Tone Mapping: LG's 4K Cinema HDR supports a variety of HDR formats - including Dolby Vision, Advanced HDR by Technicolor, as well as Active HDR10 & HLG. Thanks to the TV's Active HDR technology with Enhanced Dynamic Tone Mapping and SDR-to-HDR Effect, both HDR and SDR video content is optimized with the correct amount of brightness and contrast, so all types of HDR & SDR content can be displayed beautifully. HDR (High Dynamic Range video) reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail.

    • Dolby Vision: Dolby Vision Content has dynamic metadata that is produced during content creation, capturing the dynamic properties of each scene. This dynamic metadata is used to optimize the picture brightness curve on a frame-by-frame basis. Dolby Vision is the preferred HDR format by major Hollywood Studios and delivers the cinematic experience the creator intended by optimizing the picture frame-by-frame.
    • Active HDR10 & HLG Pro: HDR10 Pro and HLG Pro is LG's own proprietary HDR solution which processes a HDR10 or HLG video signal dynamically frame-by-frame using Enhanced Dynamic Tone Mapping. HDR10 uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the TV that the video content is encoded using HDR; it is currently the most popular HDR format on the market. HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) uses no pre-encoded metadata and is primarily designed for live video and over-the-air broadcasts. Enhanced Dynamic Tone Mapping allows the TV to offer the best picture possible, even when playing HDR10 content which only contains static metadata, or HLG content which uses no metadata at all.
    • Advanced HDR by Technicolor: The same renowned Technicolor technology that helps perfect premium Hollywood movies and TV shows can now be found in LG OLED TVs. Advanced HDR by Technicolor optimizes the color performance, which allows for content to be displayed as intended by cinematographers. *Advanced HDR by Technicolor is supported via USB only.
    • SDR-to-HDR Effect: The TV's HDR Effect feature raises image quality for SDR content to near HDR quality Enhanced Dynamic Tone Mapping technology. With the HDR Effect feature, SDR images are processed frame-by-frame to improve brightness in specific areas, enhance contrast ratios and render more precise images.

Ultra HD 4K Resolution w/ Upscaler: The LG OLED TV has a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution through its built-in upscaler, regardless of input signal. 4K provides four times higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition TVs with a total of 8.3 million pixels. Its detail is so vivid and crisp, even when viewed from close distances; it's nearly impossible to discern a single pixel, even from inches away. Enjoy incredibly flawless images, vivid colors, and picture details as never before. More benefits of Ultra-HD 4K include:

    • Greater Sense Of Depth: At 4K, distant objects in a  scene can be rendered with greater clarity than at 2K, with more nuances of light and shadow and focus for a greater sense of perceived  depth.
    • Better Color: Because pixels are units of colored light, their greater quantity in 4K enables more layered transitions and subtler gradations of tones, so the hues we see up on screen will be truer to what we see in nature.
    • Sit Even Closer: 2K HD TVs carry a recommended viewing distance of three times (3X) the TV screen height, but with a 4K display you can move in to one-and-a-half times (1.5X) screen height without exposing individual pixels. Sitting closer better fills your field of vision, assuring total immersion in whatever you're watching.

Video Inputs: The LG OLED television features HDMI 2.0b and Composite video inputs. All of the television's video inputs are displayed at 3,840 x 2,160 (4K).

    • HDMI 2.0b: The four HDMI 2.0b inputs will accept 4K (60/30Hz), 1080p (60/24Hz), 1080i, 720p, and 480p video signals. The HDMI inputs not only allow you to connect your Blu-ray/DVD player or Satellite/Cable receiver to the TV, but also a laptop or computer. The television's HDMI inputs do not accept 480i video signals.
      • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by all of the TV's HDMI inputs. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with 4K Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
      • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All of the HDMI inputs will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of 4K video (30/60fps). With 4:4:4 color, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. You will need to enable this feature in the menu. 4:2:2 (30/60fps) and 4:2:0 (60fps) are also supported by any of the HDMI inputs, by default.
    • Composite Video: The composite video input will accept 480i only. The composite audio/video terminal consists of an AV 3.5mm connector and a 6" mini-to-composite video/stereo RCA adapter.

Picture Settings: The LG OLED TV provides preset, user, and expert adjustment of the television's picture settings.

Ultra-Surround Sound + Equalizer: Ultra Surround delivers an immersive audio experience from seven virtual channels, requiring only the two built-in speakers of the TV. The TV also provides preset EQ modes. Choose from Smart Sound, Standard, Clear Voice III, Cinema, Sports, Music, or Game. In addition, you can adjust the TV's sound manually by using the 5-band EQ (100Hz, 300Hz, 1khz, 3khz, 10kHz).  Clear Voice III automatically detects human voices in movies and TV shows, then increases their volume to ensure that the dialog doesn't get lost in the soundtrack. You can make the voice clearer by adjusting to one of the three clarity levels.

Sound Controls: Adaptive Sound Control automatically optimizes sound based on the type of content. You can also set the TV's volume to automatically adjust for different broadcasting stations, so you can always listen to channels at the desired volume, even after switching the channels. In addition, if the video and sound of the television are not synced, you can adjust the delay of the audio output to match the video. All three of these features are only available when using the TV's internal speakers.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel of the TV's HDMI 2 input enables the television, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to your AV receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your AV receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input.

    • The audio from the TV's tuner, HDMI inputs, and USB ports can pass as DTS-HD, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, or 2ch PCM.
    • LG Store apps (like Netflix or Vudu) can be output as Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, or 2ch PCM.
    • Analog connected & DLNA compliant devices will be output audio at 2ch PCM only.
Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an AV receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 2 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

Digital Audio Output: The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, HDMI inputs, and USB ports on the TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via stereo RCA.

Note: You can choose to turn the television speakers off or leave them on with the TV's optical digital output active.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming (LG Sound Sync): Thanks to the TV's LG Sound Sync and built-in Bluetooth 4.2, you can pair a single set of Bluetooth headphones, one Bluetooth speaker, or a pair of Bluetooth speakers with the LG OLED TV. You are able to stream audio from any of the TV's built-in sources or connected sources. The TV's built-in speakers and audio outputs will be deactivated when streaming audio to Bluetooth headphones or speaker. The Bluetooth audio output's volume is variable, so volume of your Bluetooth speaker will need to be controlled by both the TV and the Bluetooth speaker for adequate volume level. You can also wirelessly connect a Bluetooth source device (such as your smartphone or tablet) to play audio from your Bluetooth source device through the TV's speakers.

Note: Not guaranteed to be compatible with all Bluetooth devices.

In addition, AI ThinQ supports Alexa Skills & Commands from an external Alexa enabled device (sold separately), so you can control the TV's primary functions from your Alexa Echo, Dot, Show, etc. (all sold separately).

Note: The TV will need to be connected to your home's network and internet provider for the AI (Artificial Intelligence) ThinQ feature to work.

LG TV Plus App: You can download the LG TV Plus app (for Android OS 4.2+ & Apple iOS 8.0+) onto your compatible Apple iOS or Android OS device in order to control the television from your smartphone or tablet, share content from your mobile device to the TV, and other convenient features. The LG TV and your Android or Apple iOS device must be connected to the same WiFi network.

    • Remote Control: With the LG TV Plus app installed, your compatible mobile device will act as a wireless remote control for the TV. You'll be able to change channels and adjust volume from the app on your smartphone or tablet. You can even select the television's LG Smart TV apps and switch between inputs

The reviews are bomber. There's no better picture available until the Micro LED models come out next year and they're are going to be 8k (no media available) their main improvement will be brightness. I don't need brightness as I watch TV in a darkened room. My XBox One matches this model perfectly for video games and 4k streaming/media. [ Craig  Feb 27, 2019 ]

I own the LG 55" OLED, the OLED is an awesome picture. I have two other LG tv's as well and I want to stay in the family, rather than deal with another smart TV's apps, remote and O/S, as would be involved with going with a Samsung QLED or Sony OLED. Consistency equals simplicity equals less aggravation. [ Philip  Nov 27, 2018 ]

This model has the best combination of features relevant to us. [ Amy  Nov 27, 2018 ]

Combination of features with price. Didn't want to pay extra $600 for the LG E8 for better sound and thinness. Also good past experience with Crutchfield. [ David  Nov 25, 2018 ]

best value for a great OLED TV based on my research. Sony would normally be my first choice but the much higher price did not seem justified. [ David  Nov 24, 2018 ]

After lots of research this seems to be a T.V. with a great picture that I will be happy with (replacing our 50" Panasonic plasma that we've had for 11+ years) for at least several years. I saw a 55B8 and it was impressive. [ David  Nov 18, 2018 ]

Saw this LG OLED model side by side with Samsung QLED. Though both great quality picture the LG OLED just had that realistic black that was unbelievable. I did the research and learned that there are benefits going either way, but the picture quality of the LG OLED is unmatched. I hope this helps and do your own research first. There is a reason why OLED is more than QLED. Good Luck! [ OeiOei  Nov 15, 2018 ]

    Q
I had a Plasma TV for over 7 years and did not detect any obvious damage from burn-in. Given my apparent viewing habits, do I need to worry about OLED?
    [ Jack  Apr 30, 2019 ]
    7 answers
    A
I'm not sure what your viewing habits are but I haven't had any issues. However, I only watch a few hours a day. My understanding is that, in the case of OLED, it isn't so much 'burn in' as 'age' or 'fatigue'. In other words, the OLEDs have a life span and since they are lit up individually, each one may get more 'age' than others and create the 'burn-in' effect. But I'm not expert so I may have this wrong or off a bit. I've also read that you can run into trouble with channels that use a logo (i.e., news, espn) in the same location for long periods. There is a mechanism in this TV (I can't remember what it is called) that tries to combat this but I don't know how well it works. For the most part I just watch movies and play video games on my so I don't think it would appear for me. However, I've also read that if you play the same game for hours on end, you may have to consider the 'heads-up' displays.
    [ ADAM  May 01, 2019 ]

No worries. I too had a Panasonic plasma before this OLED. You will notice a huge upgrade in picture quality and I have not experienced burn-in or ghosting problems. Enjoy the TV!
    [ Richard  May 01, 2019 ]
    A
After countless hours of watching sports and 4x3 broadcast black and white shows, we've not observed any burn-in. It's better than my Kuro plasma or anything else. I wouldn't be concerned.
    [ Curtis  May 01, 2019 ]
    A
I also have had a plasma tv for over 7 years without any burn in problems just by using common sense. The LG OLED tv is the same. It also has pixel shift that prevents burn in from things that stay on the screen like a network logo. In short the OLED tv is a great tv with, in my experience, no excessive burn in problems
    [ James  Apr 30, 2019 ]
    A
I have similar viewing habits and I've never had an issue with my OLED.
    [ Ken  Apr 30, 2019 ]
    A
Only have mine for about 6 months. Great picture and don't see any evidence of burn in, nor should it be a concern. Of course, I don't leave it in a frozen picture for days on end.
    [ Mark  Apr 30, 2019 ]
    A
No, you've got nothing to worry about here. I've had many nights where I've left my tv on overnight with something fairly static on the screen with no burn in at all.
    [ Michael  Apr 30, 2019 ]
    Q
    Do you price match?
    [ Brett  Oct 30, 2018 ]
    1 answer
    A
We do have a price match policy where we can sometimes match a focus group of competitors. However, this TV is one item we have chosen to exclude from price matching other companies. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
