About the Jamo S 801 PM
Nice looks, nice sound, less fuss
Nice looks, nice sound, less fuss
I had a chance to audition a pair of the Jamo S 801 PM powered speakers recently. It was easy to get them set up and playing music in my home office in just a few minutes. This is the powered version of Jamo's passive S 801 speakers. So it features the same attractive look and expansive sound that earned high marks from Crutchfield customers. But in this case, no extra amp or receiver is necessary.
I simply pulled them out of the box, connected the left and right speaker with the included speaker wire, and plugged them into an AC outlet. From there, I was able play music wirelessly from my phone via Bluetooth. Then it was just all about positioning them the right distance from the wall, so that the rear-firing port gave me the preferred amount of bass.
The Jamo S 801 PM powered speakers feature a number of wired inputs to go along with the built-in Bluetooth — plus a subwoofer output.
Designed to complement your decór
These compact, monitor-style speakers sport an interesting "wedge" shape — the front panel is slightly narrower than the back. They come with a removable magnetic grille covered in a linen tweed fabric, which I could definitely see fitting in nicely with certain furniture. I personally preferred the "grilles off" look, since the striking wood accents helped punctuate my office's earth tone color scheme.
Convenient connections for your music sources — and more bass!
Along with Bluetooth, Jamo offers a variety of wired inputs on the back of the right-hand speaker. An optical digital input gives you the option to use the speakers to bolster TV sound. There's a USB port for connecting to your computer, and analog RCA inputs for making a direct wired connection with another music source.
When positioned correctly, I found these speakers deliver some nice bass punch for their size. But when you want to go even deeper, there's a mono RCA output on the back, so you can add a powered subwoofer and really hear some thump.
My listening impressions
I don't have many choices for where I can place audio gear in my small office. So fortunately, these speakers fit on either side of a short bookcase without making things feel too cramped. My work desk is about five or six feet away, and that felt like the sweet spot for these speakers.
From that distance, the soundstage felt much larger — taller and wider — than the speakers themselves. And the imaging sounded on point, with vocals emanating from the center, and instruments coming from all directions. I really liked the overall sound presentation. If pressed I'd say that the upper mids and highs were particularly strong. Brandi Carlisle's haunting, echo-y vocals on "The Joke" sounded extra powerful.
But like I mentioned earlier, these speakers produce bigger bass than you might expect. I listened to Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's hip-hop album Bandana, and heard a satisfying amount of sub-bass that gave it a cohesive feel — not detached, like that dreaded "rapping over a backing track" sound you get from speakers with weaker low end.
One track that really played to the Jamo S 801 PM speakers' strength was "Creole Moon" by the late, great Dr. John. It features a hypnotic sax-fueled intro that gives way to a bouncy piano groove with snappy percussion. When the vocals came in, they were clear and distinct, but nicely blended into the mix.
I was taken out of that whole "analytical" headspace, and sucked into the vibe of the song. And believe me, when you're evaluating audio gear, that's the place you want to be!

Two-Way Driver Design: The S 801 PM active loudspeaker features a 1" soft-dome silk tweeter for smooth, refined high frequencies, and a 4" polyfiber woofer for balanced, musical low end. The integrated WaveGuide focuses the high frequency sound for dynamic, true-to-life reproduction, while the rear-firing slot port allows for better low frequency extension.
Built-in Amplification: The Jamo S 801 PM's "Right Speaker" employs a built-in 25 watt (RMS) / 50 watt (Peak) x 2 channel amplifier to power both speakers in the system. The built-in amplifier has been custom deigned to maximize driver performance and eliminate the need for external amplification. The "Right Speaker" and "Left Speaker" are fitted with binding-post speaker terminals on the back of the cabinet and come with 6.5' of speaker wire (18AGW) to connect the speakers together.
Bass Reflex Enclosure w/ Magnetic Grille: The S 801 PM features a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. The S 801 PM comes with fully magnetic grilles (no mounting holes or push pins) for a clean, minimalistic front-baffle design, while the large woven linen grille cloth features a heavy texture which finishes off the active speaker's modern look. Wood accents also give the speaker cabinet a handcrafted, natural look.
Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Jamo S 801 PM active loudspeaker features built-in Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP technology which allows you to wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled source device - such as your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer. You'll be able to stream stored music or music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device and control basic playback from the included remote control. Advanced playback control and song/artist information will still be done from your Bluetooth device. Once paired, the S 801 PM will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Jamo S 801 PM.
USB-B Input: The "Right Speaker" of the Jamo S 801 PM features a rear-panel USB (type-B) input for connecting your Windows PC or Mac computer/laptop. Through the S 801 PM's USB connection, you are able to play music files (up to 24-bit/96kHz) stored on your Windows PC or Mac computer/laptop through the powered speaker system.
Optical Digital Input: The Jamo S 801 PM is fitted with an optical (toslink) digital input on the back of the "Right Speaker" for connection to a digital audio device like your TV, Blu-ray, or CD player. The speaker's optical digital input will accept 2ch stereo PCM only (up to 24-bit/96kHz).
Aux Input: The Jamo S 801 PM is equipped with a stereo analog RCA input for connecting an external line-level audio device. If you want to connect a turntable to this Aux input, you'll need an external phono preamp (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) or a turntable with a built-in phono preamp.
Sub Out: The Jamo S 801 PM features a mono-sub RCA output on the back of the "Right Speaker" that allows you to connect a powered subwoofer for added bass response. Your powered sub should have its own low-pass crossover.

The remote offers easy access to system features such as dedicated source selection, volume up/down, play/pause, and previous/next track. Make sure to point the IR remote at the IR sensor on the "Right Speaker".
Mounting Options: The Jamo S 801 PM can be placed on a speaker stand, bookshelf, table, or other flat surface. Integrated rubber feet secure the speakers in place and prevent any damage to your mounting surface
Note: There is no included bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall-mount the speaker.

I have the bigger passive version and love Jamos. I used these at my work desk (remote) and love em. One goofy note is that I did drop (doh) one from only a foot or two off the ground and the corners dented. Perhaps not the most hardy, but I love their look and the way they sound.
