About the Jamo S 801 PM

Nice looks, nice sound, less fuss

I had a chance to audition a pair of the Jamo S 801 PM powered speakers recently. It was easy to get them set up and playing music in my home office in just a few minutes. This is the powered version of Jamo's passive S 801 speakers. So it features the same attractive look and expansive sound that earned high marks from Crutchfield customers. But in this case, no extra amp or receiver is necessary.

I simply pulled them out of the box, connected the left and right speaker with the included speaker wire, and plugged them into an AC outlet. From there, I was able play music wirelessly from my phone via Bluetooth. Then it was just all about positioning them the right distance from the wall, so that the rear-firing port gave me the preferred amount of bass.

Back of the Jamo S 801 M

The Jamo S 801 PM powered speakers feature a number of wired inputs to go along with the built-in Bluetooth — plus a subwoofer output.

Designed to complement your decór

These compact, monitor-style speakers sport an interesting "wedge" shape —  the front panel is slightly narrower than the back. They come with a removable magnetic grille covered in a linen tweed fabric, which I could definitely see fitting in nicely with certain furniture. I personally preferred the "grilles off" look, since the striking wood accents helped punctuate my office's earth tone color scheme.

Convenient connections for your music sources — and more bass!

Along with Bluetooth, Jamo offers a variety of wired inputs on the back of the right-hand speaker. An optical digital input gives you the option to use the speakers to bolster TV sound. There's a USB port for connecting to your computer, and analog RCA inputs for making a direct wired connection with another music source.

When positioned correctly, I found these speakers deliver some nice bass punch for their size. But when you want to go even deeper, there's a mono RCA output on the back, so you can add a powered subwoofer and really hear some thump.

My listening impressions

I don't have many choices for where I can place audio gear in my small office. So fortunately, these speakers fit on either side of a short bookcase without making things feel too cramped. My work desk is about five or six feet away, and that felt like the sweet spot for these speakers.

From that distance, the soundstage felt much larger — taller and wider — than the speakers themselves. And the imaging sounded on point, with vocals emanating from the center, and instruments coming from all directions. I really liked the overall sound presentation. If pressed I'd say that the upper mids and highs were particularly strong. Brandi Carlisle's haunting, echo-y vocals on "The Joke" sounded extra powerful.

But like I mentioned earlier, these speakers produce bigger bass than you might expect. I listened to Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's hip-hop album Bandana, and heard a satisfying amount of sub-bass that gave it a cohesive feel — not detached, like that dreaded "rapping over a backing track" sound you get from speakers with weaker low end.

One track that really played to the Jamo S 801 PM speakers' strength was "Creole Moon" by the late, great Dr. John. It features a hypnotic sax-fueled intro that gives way to a bouncy piano groove with snappy percussion. When the vocals came in, they were clear and distinct, but nicely blended into the mix.

I was taken out of that whole "analytical" headspace, and sucked into the vibe of the song. And believe me, when you're evaluating audio gear, that's the place you want to be!

Product Research

Features

Two-Way Driver Design: The S 801 PM active loudspeaker features a 1" soft-dome silk tweeter for smooth, refined high frequencies, and a 4" polyfiber woofer for balanced, musical low end. The integrated WaveGuide focuses the high frequency sound for dynamic, true-to-life reproduction, while the rear-firing slot port allows for better low frequency extension.

Built-in Amplification: The Jamo S 801 PM's "Right Speaker" employs a built-in 25 watt (RMS) / 50 watt (Peak) x 2 channel amplifier to power both speakers in the system. The built-in amplifier has been custom deigned to maximize driver performance and eliminate the need for external amplification. The "Right Speaker" and "Left Speaker" are fitted with binding-post speaker terminals on the back of the cabinet and come with 6.5' of speaker wire (18AGW) to connect the speakers together.

Bass Reflex Enclosure w/ Magnetic Grille: The S 801 PM features a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. The S 801 PM comes with fully magnetic grilles (no mounting holes or push pins) for a clean, minimalistic front-baffle design, while the large woven linen grille cloth features a heavy texture which finishes off the active speaker's modern look. Wood accents also give the speaker cabinet a handcrafted, natural look.

Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Jamo S 801 PM active loudspeaker features built-in Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP technology which allows you to wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled source device - such as your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer. You'll be able to stream stored music or music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device and control basic playback from the included remote control. Advanced playback control and song/artist information will still be done from your Bluetooth device. Once paired, the S 801 PM will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Jamo S 801 PM.

USB-B Input: The "Right Speaker" of the Jamo S 801 PM features a rear-panel USB (type-B) input for connecting your Windows PC or Mac computer/laptop. Through the S 801 PM's USB connection, you are able to play music files (up to 24-bit/96kHz) stored on your Windows PC or Mac computer/laptop through the powered speaker system.

Optical Digital Input: The Jamo S 801 PM is fitted with an optical (toslink) digital input on the back of the "Right Speaker" for connection to a digital audio device like your TV, Blu-ray, or CD player. The speaker's optical digital input will accept 2ch stereo PCM only (up to 24-bit/96kHz).

Aux Input: The Jamo S 801 PM is equipped with a stereo analog RCA input for connecting an external line-level audio device. If you want to connect a turntable to this Aux input, you'll need an external phono preamp (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) or a turntable with a built-in phono preamp.

Sub Out: The Jamo S 801 PM features a mono-sub RCA output on the back of the "Right Speaker" that allows you to connect a powered subwoofer for added bass response. Your powered sub should have its own low-pass crossover.

IR Remote: The Jamo S 801PM includes an IR wireless remote control for wireless operation of the powered speaker, plus control of your Bluetooth paired devices. The remote offers easy access to system features such as dedicated source selection, volume up/down, play/pause, and previous/next track. Make sure to point the IR remote at the IR sensor on the "Right Speaker".

Mounting Options: The Jamo S 801 PM can be placed on a speaker stand, bookshelf, table, or other flat surface. Integrated rubber feet secure the speakers in place and prevent any damage to your mounting surface

Note: There is no included bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall-mount the speaker.

AC Power: The Jamo S 801 PM's "Right Speaker" which is equipped with the built-in amplifier must be plugged into an AC power outlet using the included AC power adapter with 56" cord.

Q
Is there a way to disable automatic power-off after inactivity? I bought these recently and they turn off after about 15 minutes of inactivity, even with the computer USB input. It's quite annoying that I have to press the power button every 15 minutes if I'm not playing any music.

Not that I know, I haven't found any hidden features just what the remote shows

I have not had that issue. So I'm afraid I'm of no assistance with that.
[ NICOLE  May 30, 2020 ]

Unfortunately, it appears that there is no setting that allows you to toggle off the auto shutoff feature.

[ Ronald  May 19, 2020 ]
A
In my opinion , not at all
[ ALAN C  May 18, 2020 ]
A
Not to large at all. They sound great!
[ JOHN  May 18, 2020 ]
A
Each speaker has a 6 x 6.5" footprint, so if you have a smaller desk, or a lot of stuff on your desk, they would probably be too big. They sound good enough to sit on the floor, next to your desk, if that is an option.
[ Kyle  May 18, 2020 ]
A
They could probably fit on a desk, but they are on the bigger side - if you have a smaller desk, they won't fit.
[ Juliet  May 18, 2020 ]
A
depends on how big your desk is and your available real estate, but they are quite a bit larger than I anticipated. I got them on discount so I can't complain too much, but if I had it to do over again, I'd definitely get something at least 1/2 the size. Sound is decent at low volumes, so it's not overpowering the space. Also, the bluetooth connection caused severe echo in conference calls, and you can't set the power saving timeout, so I ended up using a standard 3.5/RCA plug.
[ PETER  May 18, 2020 ]
A
Not for me, that is exactly what I'm using my speakers for.
[ EUAN  May 18, 2020 ]
A
They would be good for a desk, assuming you have a decent size desk. Watch the videos here on Crutchfield. They show them sitting on a desk for reference.
[ HANS  May 18, 2020 ]
A
I guess that depends on your desk size! I am using them as desktop speakers. I had to move some stuff around but wanted better sound out of my computer than I was getting with the little cheap typical computer speakers. Since these were 50% off and I respect the brand I gave them a shot. Sound good and glad I made the switch.
[ Adam  May 18, 2020 ]
Q
When you talk about them having the best sound at 5-6 feet distance, what does that mean? Will they still sound acceptable inside or outside of that range? Would they be good for a dorm room?
[ Josiah  May 12, 2020 ]
6 answers
A
Hi Josiah, I actually bought them for my son in college for a Christmas present. They sound very nice and are well suited for a college dorm. However, beyond that, if you move off campus or once you graduate, you may want something with a bit more punch. We ended up trading them for the similar sized Klipsch speakers, which have excellent sound quality and plenty of punch for larger spaces than a dorm room. Hope that helps.
[ JOHN  May 13, 2020 ]
A
They have excellent sound throughout my house which is a one-level three bedroom home.
[ JUDITH  May 13, 2020 ]
A
While these are not advertised as near sound like most good monitors they sound great in small rooms. The sound great when loud too but I got these for my office and could not have made a better choice ( if using wires I do recommend using the usb )
[ ashgug  May 12, 2020 ]
A
The speakers sound great at those distances.
[ KEN  May 12, 2020 ]
A
I can tell you that I put them in a fairly large living room, much larger than a dorm room, and they filled the room with plenty of sound! They aren't going to shake your bones with loud sound, but they should fill the room no problem.
[ Jacob  May 12, 2020 ]
A
They would be great for a dorm room. I have them in the living room of my condo and they sound excellent. Make sure you experiment with the distance of the port from the wall It makes a significant difference in the bass response.
[ William  May 12, 2020 ]
Q
what is the bluetooth version on these?
[ ashgug  Apr 24, 2020 ]

A
The s 801 pm is bluetooth in white or black, I have white they look great and sound great. The pm means powered monitor.

Q
Do I need the optical digital cable in order to use the speakers with my tv?
[ Paul  Apr 10, 2020 ]
1 answer
A
Most likely - assuming your TV uses an optical digital audio output (most do)
[ Cosmo  Apr 26, 2020 ]  Staff
Q
for convenience to power outlet, the placement of the passive speaker must go on the left side of the room. is this a problem?
[ reelstuff2007  Apr 05, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
The active speakers on the right and the passive speaker is on the left, that is correct. It would only be a problem if you did not have a power outlet within reach of the power cord from the right speaker.
[ JOHN  Apr 05, 2020 ]
A
I am not having any problems at all.
[ Kathleen  Apr 05, 2020 ]
Q
Can I use the analog input for a direct phono or do I need a preamp?
[ Todd  Jan 02, 2020 ]
1 answer
A
If your turntable does not have a built in phono-stage, you will need separate phono-amp to use these speakers.
[ Calvin  Jan 13, 2020 ]  Staff
Q
can these be used passively?
[ Glendon  Dec 14, 2019 ]

They cannot. They are designed to be used together using the built in amplifier only.

Thinking of buying for TV as substitute for sound bar. Can universal tv remote be programmed to control the volume on these speakers, to keep down the number of remotes?
[ Emsflyer84  Apr 09, 2020 ]

A
Hi Matt, thank you for your question. The Jamo speakers are compatible with some universal remotes, but not all. Jamo does not specify which remotes may or may not be compatible with these speakers.
[ Jess  Apr 26, 2020 ]  Staff
A
There is nothing in the manual about that so it is unlikely

Q
Can you add a subwoofer to them ?? Does it have a sub out put jack
[ James  Nov 24, 2019 ]

Yes they have a dedicated subwoofer preamp output on the back.
