AudioQuest Type 4 cable Cross section

Solid conductors improve accuracy and clarity

Type 4 cables feature four solid, long-grain copper conductors to ensure highly efficient signal transfer with minimal loss. Solid conductors eliminate electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound with multi-strand conductor cables.

AudioQuest Type 4 cable Closeup details

Precise cable geometry

These AudioQuest cables use two 17-gauge and two 20-gauge conductors. This difference in diameter reduces the possibility of distortion caused by any particular conductor's sonic "signature." A specialized spiral arrangement of the four conductors minimizes potential signal interaction, resulting in sound that's clearer and more dynamic.

Product Highlights:

  • speaker cables with pre-attached banana connectors
  • four solid, pure copper conductors
  • two 17-gauge and two 20-gauge for full-range signal transfer
  • conductors arranged in cross pattern to minimize mutual interference
  • current-carrying equivalent of a pair of 15-gauge conductors
  • silver-plated banana plugs
  • textile braid cable cover
  • warranty: 5 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

What's in the Box:

  • Two 10' lengths of speaker cable with a pair of BFA Banana connectors on each end

If you have a pair of high-end speakers and other equipment then this is a must to bring your speakers to their protential and the difference is Simply Amazing. I have a Mac 7200 and a pair of sonus Faber cremona M's. It seems that finely stranded copper wire for speaker wire creates a lot of crosstalk which was noticed in the early days of telephone. These correct that by using four conductors per speaker cable and really high quality connectors. My first experience on playing music with these cables was a previously pretty scratchy Pink Floyd album and these cables seemed to make the scratches almost disappeared. I purchased these speakers from a high-end shop and Houston and they sounded a lot better than when I got them home and I later found out that they were using a $4,000 pair of audio speaker wires. These audioquest type 4 cables restored that sound that I had heard at the high-end audio store! If you have a cheap crappie pair of speakers I don't think the cables would do much for them though. Next I played the classical piece by , Joshua Bell I think prokofiev Violin Concerto, and I knew then that I had made a very good purchase! So to conclude if you think spending this kind of money for speaker cables is kind of stupid think again! And if you don't like them it'll only cost you $10 to send them back and get your money back and they will send you the return form to be printed!

Excellent sound and design

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was always skeptical about spending money on expensive speaker cables, falsely thinking "It's just wire." This is more than just wire. AudioQuest is pure audio bliss. After replacing my generic speaker wire with the AudioQuests, my system came to life. Detail, depth, and resonance was more pronounced and alive than ever before. I realize now that I had been cheating my system by ignoring the importance of speaker cable.

Pros: Tightened bass, fuller soundstage, high quality build

Cons: Be nice if the cables came in white

an upgrade

Don't bog down your receivers performance with small wires resisting sound to your speakers. These large gauge open the flow like air intake into a motor. Big deep sound and detail.

Pros: deep sound and detail

Cons: expensive

Superb Quality For The Buck

Anthony from Huntington, WV on 5/11/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upon listening to the AudioQuest Type 4 speaker cables. Ive noticed right away the improvement in sound clarity and definition. The sound was very clean and smooth. The only reason why I couldn't give these speaker cables 5 stars for the price. Was because they are kinda on the thin side and are a smaller gauge. Ive noticed that these cables struggle under high volume listening sessions. While my previous cables, larger gauge did not. Do they need a break in time? Are they directional? Im not sure. I will continue to listen and see if they improve over time.

Pros: Amazing clean signal from point A to point B Durable. Definitely worth the upgrade.

Cons: Does not accept high power. Not recommended for power hungry speakers. Not in wall rated.

Easy and best speaker tables.

Best way to go with these wires when hooking up your home theater. The quality is top of the line and the banana clips make for a easy on and off when hooking up your system.

Pros: very durable and no cutting needed.

Cons: none

I was unaware how important speaker wire/connections are to the sound output of speakers. Well, it makes a huge difference! I purchased these with a [pair of Polk bookshelf speakers and every time I listen to music, it sounds like they are playing right in my living room.

Pros: clear crisp sound.

Cons: I would say the price, how ever theses a perfect example of getting what you pay for.

I have been told by other audiophiles that Audioquest has sold out and they are not what they once were. Problem, is that I hear such a tremendous difference from all the other garbage out there. Perfect wire for short distance set ups and durability.

Day and night difference in audio quality compare to cheap Monoprice 100% oxygen free copper 12AWG speaker wire. Slightly harder to work with. Not as flexible/bendable , but the convenience tradeoff for higher quality audio is worth it.

The real deal

Tad from Gallatin, TN on 2/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very substantial cables. The sound seems more "open" and possibly more bass. I was already using what I thought was a good cable (Monster), but I can hear a difference with these. One note: because these are "more substantial" they are not as flexible/bendable as regular speaker cable.

Pros: Better sound.

Cons: Not so flexable.

For the price, the difference was instantly noticeable and it is a great improvement. AudioQuest makes great cables. I am sure their Rocket series, etc. are even better, but the Type 4 has been their cable of choice for some time and I am thrilled with them.

Pros: An excellent step up for a moderate price.

Cons: None

Pros: easy to use plug right in clean 5 year warranty

I purchased these cables once we moved into our new home since we now have a finished basement. All I can say is wow!!!!! I thought long and hard before purchasing but makes my klipsch towers 16 year old speakers sound amazing and clear. I almost wanted to buy new speakers but now i don't have to. It's a great investment don't cheat on wires!!

Pros: Like brand new speakers!!

Cons: Price but well worth it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I'm 61 years old, and have owned many stereo systems in my life, some good some not so good. I quite frankly am shocked by the cost of these cables. I spent well over $400.00 for a pair of speaker cables and the little cables to connect the integrated amp with the power amp! I have had complete systems for the same price as my cables. Until now, I used heavy duty speaker wire that comes on a roll, for speaker connections, and RCA type connectors for everything else and things worked just fine. But that was then, and this is now. I bought a high end Marantz system, and saw no reason the "half step" any part of it with "weak" connections. So I bit the bullet and bought the cables, in order to not ever worry I am "missing something" in the sound dept. My understanding is these cables have no loss in signal, so I guess if you want to play you gotta pay.

Pros: The look great, and they should!

Cons: Very expensive

A good audio system needs good wiring

Phil from Whitehall, PA on 5/4/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In 1988 I bought a pair of JBL L100t speakers and used good quality Monster Cable speaker wire to connect them to my Harman Kardon receiver. They sounded great, but eventually the speaker cable needed to be replaced along with the original receiver. Earlier, I bought a Yamaha, Model RX-797 receiver to replace the HK and last year I broke down to buy a pair of AudioQuest, Type 4 speaker cables. No, I'm not an audiophile, but I do appreciate good sound and the difference in sound quality with Type 4 was noticeable--not night and day, but high frequency sounds were cleaner, the midrange was clear and strong, and the base was somewhat tighter. Was it worth the price? It was for me: I recently bought another pair of AQ Type-4 speaker cable to upgrade my new home theater system that includes a Samsung UN65F9000 4K-UHD TV. I'm so impressed with AudioQuest that I also ordered AQ Golden Gate stereo interconnect cable with RCA plugs to upgrade connections to a HK 3470 receiver and a pair of JBL L100t3 speakers used as part of my home theater. Yes, I'm sticking with stereo instead of going to surround sound--don't want all those speakers. FYI: A few years ago I did an extensive comparison of my old JBLs to the latest in home speakers; better sound would have cost about $5000. I also purchased AudioQuest Cinnamon HDMI cable to connect a new Yamaha, BD-S677 Blue-ray player to the TV. I'm convinced that quality cable is worth the price when connecting quality components.

Pros: Quality construction is obvious when you see and touch AudioQuest Type 4 cables. Their performance in transferring undistorted sound makes AudioQuest Type 4 speaker cable the perfect choice for those who appreciate listening to breathtaking stereo sound.

Cons: Somewhat pricey, but in my opinion, worth it.

I wish I'd got this earlier when I assembled my system. Noticable improvements in highs and bass is more tight. I had type 2 16guage cable earlier with banana connectors. May be the guage was wrong for my speakers or something. Sound quality from speakers is much much better now. Soon, I'll replace for my center and surround speakers too.

Pros: Great clarity in highs and tight bass

Cons: a bit expensive

Great sound, great build quality, and great aesthetics

Dave Z from Rockland County, NY on 9/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these cables along with a pair of MartinLogan ElectroMotion ESLs because I preferred not to use my existing AudioQuest Midnight 3 bi-wire cables with the second set of connectors dangling (the ElectroMotions do not support bi-wiring). I found no difference between these and the Midnights, despite the Midnight being a much beefier and more expensive cable. Very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Sounds as good as more expensive cables that I've tried, build quality is solid, nice aesthetics

Cons: Probably still more expensive than other cables that might do as good of a job (but I happily pay a little more for AudioQuest products because of my past experiences with the brand)

Pros: High quality. Won't come apart. Improved Sound Quality.

I bought a Cambridge Audio Topaz amp from Crutchfield, and 2 good speakers to go with it, all to hook up to a great SONY turntable I've had for about 7 years, and you recommended these speaker wires. I was taken aback because I though, hey, speaker wire is speaker wire, but these blew me away. The amp is relatively small, the speakers the size of small shoeboxes, but the entire system sounds way "bigger" than it is. Very pleased!

Audioquest - The Real Deal

Guest from Dallas GA on 2/16/2013

I have been using boutique speaker wire for a long time. I paid dearly for them too. I decided to try AQ's Pearl HDMI cables after reading that they were the cat sass in What Hi-Fi magazine. I had just gotten a new Plasma TV and blew a wad on it so I didn't have the dead presidents for expensive cables. I bought three of them, hooked them up, and could not believe the performance. This got me thinking about interconnects so I bought the G - Snakes for my CD player and Turntable. Same result - Wow !!! Of course, now I had to try the Type 4's on my Martin Logan Source hybrids. I could not believe the difference ! It was as if someone took blankets off of them. The bass was so much more powerful that I took my 10 inch Velodyne subwoofer off the system. It is collecting dust in the closet now. The soundstage opened up and now I play music at two thirds the previous volume. AQ products helped my system more than I can explain. Expensive? Yes. Worth it ? Yes, oh yes. Solid conductor technology really works and I am sure of it. Buy these with confidence !

Pros: Sound, looks, sonic beauty. No break in period that I can tell. Sounded great out of the box.

Cons: None

Cables matter!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks to Norm at Crutchfield...a real audio guy who steered me in the right direction. Cables are not voodoo magic but rather what was missing in my system. They highlight tones and sharpen the sound stage. If you can spring for the cash, do it!!

Pros: Quality you can see and hear.

Cons: Pricey.

Type 4 -- Worth it!

Tom from Rochester NY on 5/26/2012

When I upgraded my living room speakers to PSB Synchrony Twos, I was still using Audioquest X2 14 gauge speaker wire. Wanted to get as much as I could from my NAD T787 AVR, and was only running 5.2 in that room, so bi-amped with the X2, which gave more depth but for most sources not a huge difference. After a while wondered if stepping up to solid wire like Type 4 would make more of a difference, finally gave it a go bi-wiring. Definite improvement in clarity, especially noticeable in the Synchrony C center, but towers seemed to lose a bit of their punch, so somewhat disappointed. Then decided that if I'd gone this far, might as well finish the job, so bit the bullet and went the bi-AMP route with Type 4. WOW! Everything came alive and have both the clarity and oomph I was hoping for. Had to re-adjust speaker settings several dbs and use port plugs on the Synchronies because bass output kicked up several notches, though was still very clean. Exceptional sound now from all sources, from NAD 565 CD player to Oppo 93 BluRays, even Cable TV and Airplay streaming via Marantz NA7004 with Apple Lossless files. Funny, my first thought was "now it all finally sounds like it did at the shop!". Yeah, the cost of cables can get pretty ridiculous, but I love music and it's worth it to me to get as much as I can from my system, even if the individual improvements are subtle, because they add up. I'm now a believer in solid wire designs.

Pros: Instant improvement in clarity, especially if bi-wiring -- additional depth if bi-amp

Cons: cost, of course :)

I hooked these up today and I can definately hear a difference. My signal is more clear and crisp. Looking forward to more testing! I am running a Yamaha RX-V1900 amp into Canton Ergo 80s. For years I have run heavy gauge copper cable as I've always thought more copper is better. I have to say I am impressed. I am going to get another pair for my second system.

Pros: Not super expensive. Audioquest sells a pair that costs over $8000 !!

Cons: None yet

What a difference a cable makes!

Martin from Chico, CA on 3/3/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

About 10 years ago I bought a Yamaha shelf stereo system from Crutchfield (when I still lived in Charlottesville and could buy it in the brick-and-mortar version). It still works and sounds surprisingly well but I am in the middle of upgrading my AV system. I started with new speaker cables, replacing the thin out-of-the-box Yamaha cables with these AudioQuest cables. Wow! I didn't know that that little shelf system could sound so good! The speakers are on Sanus SF22 stands, which already cleaned up the sound. But with these cables the detail, staging, localization and definition has increased enormously. At first I felt a bit silly to spend this much on speaker cables, but when I turned on a CD to hear the results and could not turn off the CD until I had listened and enjoyed it all the way through I knew it was worth it.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Solid Conductors: All of the AudioQuest, CinemaQuest Type 4 speaker cable conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the single greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat harsh and distorted sound. Solid conductors enable the Type 4 cables to produce very clear sound.

Long-Grain Copper: The Type 4 cable's LGC (Long-Grain Copper) allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper. LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and provides overall better performance.

4-Cross Geometry: The relationship between conductors defines a cable's most basic electrical values (capacitance and inductance). However, even when those variables are kept in a reasonable balance, the relationship between conductors can be varied in ways that greatly effect the sound. The spiral construction of Type 4 cable allows for significantly better dynamic contrast and information intelligibility than if the same conductors were run in parallel. The specific 4-cross geometry used in Type 4 cables maximizes this advantage.

Insulation: Since the Type 4 cables use solid conductors it doesn't require hard insulation and can take advantage of the vibration damping advantage of a softer insulation.

SST (Spread Spectrum Technology: SST (Spread Spectrum Technology) is a method for significantly reducing distortion flaws by using a precise combination of different size conductors.

Terminations: The Type 4 cable utilizes high quality BFA/Banana connectors that allow the Type 4 cables to be securely attached to your speakers and amplifier. The BFA/Banana connectors are a dull looking silver because its metal is plated directly over the connector itself. There is no shiny and harsh sounding nickel layer underneath to distort your audio signal.

made a big diff. in my two channel system over reg. 12 gauge wire . system is parasound p5 and a21 preamp and amp.speakers are focal 836w towers. mostly running lossless i tunes and cds on nad 565 . the type 4 cables made a noticeable diff. in high end and mid bass in my speakers . also using AQ cinnamon rca usb and fiber optic cables for about two years now. all seem to work with no issues. Jose Z: I am not sure about that. You should probably ask AudioQuest, [ ROSS  Aug 10, 2014 ]
I do not know what Class it is rated but I can vouch for the fact that they send 100% of the notes from my Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10 amp to the PSB Image B4 shelf speakers & produce a sound like a system costing 10x as much. [ WILLIAM A  Aug 10, 2014 ]
You could actually have each of the speakers up to almost 10 FT from the amplifier (each cable is 10 feet long) Two 10' lengths of speaker cable with a pair of BFA Banana connectors on each end [ Jeff  Jan 08, 2014 ]  Staff
I use them for mains, but did have to route them to make 90 degree turns. They are pretty flexible. [ Jeffrey  Apr 05, 2017 ]
They need about 3-4" to bend comfortably to a 90 degree angle. However, they can be bent in about half that space if necessary. [ TAD  Apr 03, 2017 ]
