About the AudioQuest X2 Speaker Cable

Kristen Schaub
Compared to commonplace 16-gauge wire, AudioQuest's X2 speaker cable reduces resistance over longer runs, so your high-quality components and speakers will get the cleanest, most accurate signal possible. As a general rule, the lower the gauge, the thicker the wire, and the better its capacity to pass amplified audio signal.

AudioQuest's cable designs come from years of in-house research and careful engineering. Their X2 speaker cables use a special semi-solid concentric arrangement that keeps the bundled strands in the same position throughout the length of the cable. The signal encounters less potentially damaging interactions and shifts in magnetic environment, resulting in sound that's clearer and more dynamic. The conductors are made of long-grain copper to ensure efficient signal transfer with minimal loss.

Product Research

Features

AudioQuest X2 Speaker Cable: AudioQuest's X2 is a 14AWG speaker wire that is built around a Semi-Solid Concentric design which is more robust than conventional stranded bundle wire. In conventional multi-strand speaker wire, strands can change position within the bundle. Electrical and magnetic interaction are compounded as each strand changes position, causing distortion. With AudioQuest's Semi-Solid concentric packing, the long-grain copper strands within the smaller, tighter concentric bundle do not change position, significantly reducing distortion.

  • Semi-Solid Concentric Packed Conductors: Semi-Solid Concentric Packed Conductors use fewer, larger strands that do not change position down the length of the cable to avoid the distortion characteristics of basic stranded conductors.
  • Long-Grain-Copper (LGC): LGC allows a smoother and clearer sound than cab regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper. OFHC is a general metal in specification regarding loss without any concern for distortion. LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and better performance.
  • Spread-Spectrum Technology (SST): Any single size or shape of conductor has a specific distortion profile. Spread-Spectrum Technology (SST) significantly reduces the awareness of these character flaws by using a precise combination of different size conductors.

Note: Available in a 30' or 50' length with a dark grey or off-white PVC jacket.

Installation: The AudioQuest X2 speaker wire is unterminated, allowing for direct connector or the addition of optional connectors such as banana plugs (sold separately). The X2 speaker wire's PVC jackets should be carefully stripped 1/2". For optimum performance, make sure to follow the printed arrows on the X2 speaker wire's PVC jacket. These arrows should point toward your speaker.

Customer Q&A

Q
Is the wire just one cable, or 2? I mean if you run speaker wire to a speaker that is 15 feet away do you need 15 feet or 30 feet too hook up your speaker??
john  May 09, 2020
13 answers
A
Hi John, the AudioQuest X2 speaker cable is a 30 foot spool of speaker cable. If you are using this cable to connect 2 speakers that are 15 feet away from your amp or receiver, you will be able to cut this cable to 2 runs of 15 feet. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, if you need further assistance.

This product ships as one spool of cable, totaling 30 feet. If you plan on connecting one set of speakers that are both 15 feet away from your listening source, you will need to cut the cable's length into one half. This will give you two runs of cable, and will allow each speaker to be connected 15 feet from your listening source.
heath  May 30, 2020
A
15 feet for each speaker, they are very good and easy to work on
samuel  May 30, 2020
A
God bless you, you need 30 feet for two speakersEnter an answer to this question.
agustin  May 29, 2020
A
The wire has two cables, one clearly marked in white so that you can attach it to the + - terminals of your speakers/receiver.
juan  May 29, 2020
A
Its just one wire with negative and positive connection so you just need 15 feet per speaker.
hunter  May 29, 2020
A
Just 15 feet.
james  May 28, 2020
A
It's a real of 30ft of one cable. So if you are hooking 2 speakers like a left and right, then you have to cut the cable. You have to measure your distance from the speaker to your amp/receiver. Keep in mind that you have to account for drop distance because the cable has to drop to the ground.
peter  May 28, 2020
A
The wire is one cable. If your speaker is 15ft away then you would only need 15ft of cable for that particular speaker.
steven  May 28, 2020
A
Each cable has 2 wires (+ and -). Only 1 cable per speaker needed.
herbert  May 28, 2020
A
you would only need 15ft. the speaker wire is ran in pairs and fuse tog. so red and block essentially ran 30ft. exactly how picture is
brian  May 28, 2020
A
Hey John, it's a regular speaker wire. Which has a negative and a positive. So it's two wires running together. So you would need 15ft... but make sure you have a little bit of slack on the wire just in case you want to reposition or anything like that.
anatoliy  May 28, 2020
A
It's just one.

Q
Is the 14 gauge dual conductor cable pliable or is it stiff? I have a concern when pulling the amp out from the cabinet if the wire will loop okay and not pull out of the female banana plug. Is it a personal preference to shrink wrap the over the banana plug or is there a good reason for doing this? Thanks for any input.

A
pliable enough to loop, use shrink wrap... looks nicer and durable
samuel  May 30, 2020
A
It is pliable. Personal preference
jared  Dec 28, 2017
A
This wire is very easy to work with. It does not pull out the banana plug however heat shrinking it will increase strength I would have done it but I don't have the tools to do that with. This is a great wire I've had it for about two years now it's absolutely fantastic for the money.

Q
Does it matter if I use 16gauge or 14 gauge wire?
brian  May 06, 2016
2 answers
A
14 gauge is better at carrying signal
samuel  May 30, 2020
A
There's an important piece of information missing from the question: the length of the run. Assuming the runs to each speakers aren't "long," which to me means anything exceeding 10 feet, I would answer no: it doesn't make any difference if you use 14 or 16 gauge.
philip s  May 06, 2016
Q
Is this wire Oxygen free?
karen  May 13, 2021
1 answer
A
AudioQuest X2 Cable uses long-grain copper. Long-grain copper has less oxides, less impurities, and less grain boundaries than industry standard oxygen-free high conductivity copper, which reduces the amount of interference within the cable. You can read various discussions on-line about cable design and manufacturing to answer this question in detail. Speaker cable, speakers and design are very subjective in my opinion. I am not disappointed in this purchase at all.
christopher  May 13, 2021
Q
What is the resistance of the Audioquest X2 wire?
robert  Feb 23, 2022
1 answer
A
This is 14 gauge wire which has roughly a 2.525 ohms per 1000 feet. This means a 50 foot length or shorter will have very minimal change in the resistance. The entire 50 foot length has a 0.12625 ohm resistance

Q
Is this cable Copper or copper-plated aluminum?

Dee I do not recall as I installed it over a year ago. I believe it was all copper when I cut it. It's also a directional wire so there's printed arrows on the cable sleeve signifying the direction you want to send power/ signal through the cable. And the sounds and performance has been amazing.
richard  Oct 21, 2021
A
Solid copper
michael  Oct 21, 2021
A
Copper as far as I can tell. I've stripped and srewed the ends on all of mine and see no reason to believe otherwise

Im thinking on buying the audio quest 16 gauge wire do to my speakers distance that i heard if less than 50 feet apart is recommended 16 gauge. But will this work better i have cornwall iv and forte iv any advise?

It's similar to networking cable. Attenuation of a signal is real. I had 25' lengths, never know when you're going to move and retire. Why by it again, right? Over engineered? I don't know but didn't want to miss anything. I have this and it works well.
geoffrey h  Jun 06, 2021
A
When in doubt, lower gauge the better. I would suggest 14 gauge at least! Good luck!

I went with thr G2 version. Surround sound spkrs were 38' of wire. Work fantastic! I have a Denon In Command receiver and B&W 7 Series spkrs.

Q
Probably dumb question bit it's been years since I wired speakers. This has an outside cover and a jacket on the inside conductors, do I stripe all the way to the wires or just through the jacket which leaves one covering on. Can it make a proper connection this way? Tx kp
kathy  Apr 25, 2014

A
Strip all the way to bare copper, only as far back as you need to avoid possibly shorting against adjacent wires. There are hand tools that you can purchase at an electronics store that will help you do this properly and avoid cutting into the copper . This stuff is way too tough to use your teeth.
michael  Apr 25, 2014
A
Hi, Kathy. Definitely strip it down to the wire...but just where the connection is. Best, Jon
jonathan  Apr 25, 2014
A
It dosen't have an inside jacket, when you stripe you get directly to the copper. By the way these are excellent audio cables. Still loving them after 2 plus years.
jose c  Apr 25, 2014
A
Kathy, strip the wires so the jacket is removed exposing 1/2 inch of the conducting wire. You'll want the exposed conductor to make good contact with the conductor of the speaker port or wire your attaching it to. I hope this helps.
peter j  Apr 25, 2014
A
Remove about 3/4-1"at the connector end. Bare wire if you use the hole in the post twist the wire as tight as possible.then thred it thru the hole in the post .one for +,one for - .there's a stripe on one of the conductors if you use this for positive at speaker end do same at amp end. If you're handy with a souldering iron tin the bare ends of the cables it will make for a neater job with no stray wires .
paul  Apr 25, 2014
A
I stripped it all the way to bare wire.
