About the Boyo VTL375HD Rear-view camera

A simple addition

Adding a rear-view camera to your vehicle expands your view of what's behind you. For some, just the convenience is enough, but Boyo's VTL375HD camera takes things a step farther, giving you a slim-profile license plate frame that doesn't call attention to itself and provides a simple, subtle mounting location. The clean, black design is a match for many car exteriors and it doesn't obscure your license plate, making it a solid choice in all U.S. states. Boyo uses a sturdy zinc metal frame for a long life and mounts the waterproof rear-view camera on an up & down swivel, so you can get exactly the picture you want.

Excellent picture

The Boyo VTL375HD is a cut above with its enhanced 1/4" Sony CCD sensor that gives you the best picture possible, even when it's dark outside, and it's a match for any car stereo with a standard composite video input and viewing screen. The package includes a composite video cable that runs from the camera to the video screen up front.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Killed my truck battery

Christopher from Yardley on 3/26/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I thought this Rear-view camera was ok until the micro connector plug at the end of the extension cord slightly encased in a shrink tube malfunctioned and shorted out. The unit drew a large amount of power through the stereo even with the fuses pulled making diagnosis difficult. After having a dead truck in the Vermont winter for over a week and having to pay a garage for expensive diagnostic work, the tech by accident found the wire smoking when he put the truck up on the lift. I would not recommend this product until this problem is corrected. I cut this section out and made a proper splice.

Pros: OK, video quality, usually has a water drop on the lens.

Cons: Expensive learning experience

Simple, secure design with great video quality

Nick from Middlebury, CT on 1/31/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

A great option to add rear view video to any car (ours is a 2006 Mustang GT). Requires minimal drilling, and all holes are covered completely by the frame and/or the license plate. Installation of the frame itself is straightforward, albeit a bit tricky if there are clearance issues behind the bumper cover or body panel when tightening the nuts. Video quality is very good, and the lack of guidance lines was not an issue because our head unit (Sony XAV-AX5000) has them. Overall, we are very happy with the end result because most people will never notice the camera and the sleek black frame blends in with the rest of the car. The only negative so far is that the finish on the black bolts was already starting to rub off even before installation.

Pros: Unobtrusive appearance that blends in with the bumper. Through-bolted design very secure. Great video quality.

Cons: Securing through the bumper a bit tricky on some cars. Black finish on included bolts already peeling.

Nice back up camera!

Lucas from Hailey, ID on 11/28/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I wanted to add a back up camera to my truck. I installed a Kenwood DNX574S navigation reciever and connected this camera to it. The install was pretty straight forward, except I was thrown off by the Positive and negative wire that comes with camera. I thought it connected to pos and neg on the back of the receiver because the wires were marked cam on them, but it needed it's own positive 12v power source and ground. I connected the power to a 12v acc, and grounded to the chassis. The picture is great in the daytime, and surprising decent at night. I bought it backup into my garage and connecting my trailer hitch, works great for now, time will tell. Also my Kenwood receiver had a grid line option and works great with this camera.

Pros: Nice daytime picture and decent night time picture Nice frame and camera housing

Cons: Wire instructions were a little vague

Could not use the original camera I bought, because it obscured the upper part of the license plate, Bought this one and it works fine. There are virtually no instructions, However if the black and red power wires are connected to the backup lights the camera will be automatically connected. it's only necessary to connect the yellow video wire to the back of the radio. I'd prefer the wires be at least 18 Ga.

Pros: IT WORKS

Cons: you have to figure out the wiring.

Good picture

Devin from Park Rapids, MN on 7/24/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Great camera, but it's very basic for an "HD" camera. It doesn't come with any additional features and the directions are about as simple as they get. What you get is a clear, wide-angle rear-view camera, and that's about it. No parking marks, no night-vision, no auto-engage when putting your vehicle in reverse, just a camera. That said, it does state that there are no parking guides under the details, so I didn't mark it down for that. I was a little disappointed it doesn't have auto-engage in reverse, and don't see that listed anywhere as a feature, either as a yes or no, so that's mainly what I marked it down for; same with night-vision/color correction. The camera itself looks great, though, and has a super wide-angle so I can see almost to the corners of the bumper on my truck. Got it mostly for backing out of tight spaces with little to no view behind me (due to other high-profile vehicles parking next to me) and for backing up to a trailer hitch, unassisted.

Pros: Good picture. Great looking license plate surround. Easy install on a pickup.

Cons: No extra features one expects on a backup camera. Almost non-existent installation instructions. No auto-engage on reverse... for a backup camera...

Boyo VTL375HD Rear-view camera

Crutchfield customer from Ravenswood, WV on 6/28/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Camera quality is good, it is grainy at night but good enough for its intended purpose, as I can clearly see obstacles. Mounting this via the license plate holder was very simple. The design is somewhat genius, this is going to be a huge help getting me lined up with my trailer ball. Routing the wire was difficult, I will recommend safety glasses for anyone under a truck routing a wire, rust flakes in your eyes aren't much fun. The only complaint I have is that the video wire does not appear to have any armor, I'm thinking the canvas like armor that now comes on better phone adaptor cables. Given that this wire it is traversing the undercarriage of a vehicle, exposed to all forms of weather, hot and cold, plus mechanical stresses such as vibration and sharp edges, I am concerned that longevity could be an issue (by that I am saying 10ish years from now I see my older self back under the truck replacing the wire - and probably the camera).

required modification and additional wiring

Phillip from Plano, TX on 1/25/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

It was too tall and required modification to fit between top mounting holes and my bumper cap on a 2012 honda ridgeline. I had to cut about 3mm off of the bottom of the frame, and then paint the exposed bare metal. The wiring diagram is incorrect, and shows the supplied connecting cable with power, ground, video output, plus a "mirror wire" that doesn't exist. I had to run a separate wire to send a 12V signal from my truck's Back-up lights to the reverse input on my Pioneer head unit for triggering. The picture is ok, sharp enough, but it should be on a 7" display. I like that the camera rotates up and down (manually - by hand) to optimize positioning for one man trailer hook-ups.

Cons: as per the review

Gregory from Palmdale, CA on 11/30/2016

This is my 2nd Boyo, different cars, & the quality is awesome. Very easy to install camera, took my time to place wires along vehicle wiring channel, (runs frout to back usually on driver side under scuff guards), but overall only took a couple hours. The picture on my JVC double din receiver is perfect and the 175 degree view angle gives compete coverage from side to side. I drive with the camera on in traffic or on freeways and this eliminates the blind spots nicely. In my opinion if you are looking for a backup/rear view camera the Boyo line of HD cameras is by far the best. The VTL375HD outdoes any competitor in its price range and is well worth the money if you want a clean looking view. Installing a back up camera is all about safety so why not buy a camera that provides the best picture, just be sure the screen you use will let the BOYO VTL375HD shine.

Pros: Great picture, metal frame, easy install, excellent quality. Boyo even has the wire grommets already on for the camera to car feed.

Cons: If you need instructions just follow the Crutchfield Tech support info, there are no detailed instructions with camera although it seems pretty straight forward. Your may want to purchase anti-theft license plate screws, the packaged ones are nice but limited in what vehicles they might fit easily.

Good and Clear

Brad from Portsmouth, VA on 10/8/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Great camera and very sleek, barely even know it's there. It's a very sturdy mount. I drilled a hole to completely conceal wiring however it could have easily been done with out drilling, you would just not be able to put as much torque on the bolts without providing a cable route between the vehicle and plate. Provides plenty of wire to route the wire about anyway you could probably want. Once installed the picture is very clearl and the viewing angle is about right, anymore angle and I think it would obscure the view too much when things are close to vehicle. The instructions are vague but it's literally two wires for power and a connector for the radio, a connector between radio and camera/plate bracket, and connector from camera/plate bracket. The connector from camera/plate is very small allowing me to keep the hole I drilled completely concealed behind the license plate bracket. I did put a very small touch of super glue on the sides of the connectors to ensure they wouldn't come apart in the future as well as heat shrink wrapped the connection with the heat shrink that it comes with for weather proofing.

Pros: - well designed - clear picture -good viewing angle -very sturdy mount and sleek -integrates very good with Kenwood DDX6703S

Cons: - the small connectors while great for routing do not secure very good together (solved as mentioned with super glue and heat shrink) - needed to cut a small notch in lic. plate to keep from pinching wire, again not a big deal and the notch was small enough not to show.

basically a breeze to install once i found a clear routing for the cable. I didn't have one to begin with and back to trailers all the time. I'm pretty good at finding the target (30+yrs of practice) but this makes it dead on and fast. I routed down the driver side frame rail and entered the cab on the drivers side wheel well with the gromet for the parking brake, then fed up to the head unit. Had plenty of length left to hook up and this is an 8' bed, 4 full doors, and a looong truck.

Pros: easy enough to mount and install. Head unit is a Kenwood DDX773BH and is clear, bright, and the head unit allows for a wide range of adjustments for the view alignment.

Cons: none found yet.

Pretty good backup camera

This is a solid unit with a sturdy metal frame. Picture quality is good but maybe not as good as most original equipment cameras I've seen in other vehicles. It gets the job done. Installation was pretty easy but the instructions on how to wire it were pathetic. I ended up watching a couple of YouTube videos to help with that.

Pros: Solid metal construction, easy to adjust camera angle, good but not great picture quality. It would be hard to steal as it attaches using bolts with washers and nuts on the inside of the bumper instead of just screws.

Cons: Don't expect Boyo to send you any meaningful instructions on how to install this. Pretty simple if you've done it before but otherwise not so much.

Great Camera

No complaints on this thing so far. Only had it for a week but it works and I am glad I got it. The black frame goes well with my car and most people don't even notice there is a camera on it. FYI this camera cable supplies the power and video to your head unit then you have to solder the power, red and black lines, to the power supply of your head unit. I am a noob at doing this stuff and had to call Crutchfield to have them tell me to do that. Otherwise it was a breeze to install.

Pros: Easy to install and great picture.

Cons: Instructions were lacking for the inexperienced installer.

Features

Backup License Plate Camera: The Boyo VTL375HD is a backup camera that can be added to almost any vehicle with an aftermarket receiver that features an integrated video monitor and composite video camera input. The Boyo VTL375HD includes a backup camera with an integrated license plate mounting bracket, composite video cable, and power/ground harness.

Note: The Boyo VTL375HD is meant as a driving aid only; never solely rely on the backup camera. In addition to using the camera, always look behind and around you to make sure everything is clear.

1/3" CCD Image Sensor: The Boyo VTL375HD backup camera is equipped with a 1/3" color CCD image sensor with a 520 TV line horizontal resolution.

Wide Viewing Angle & Angle Adjustment: The VTL375HD backup camera offers a 170° wide viewing angle, so you can see more of what's behind you. You can also physically angle the camera up and down on the license plate bracket.

Waterproof (IP67): The Boyo VTL375HD features a waterproof (IP67) housing to protect it from the elements. It's totally protected against dust and protected against the effect of immersion between 15cm and 1m for the duration of 30 minutes.

Composite Video Output: The Boyo VTL375HD backup camera if fitted with a composite video connector (RCA) which makes it compatible with virtually any in-dash receiver with integrated video monitor and a composite video camera input. The total length of the composite video cable is 26'.

License Plate Frame Mounting: The Boyo VTL375HD backup camera features an integrated license plate frame which mounts around your vehicle's rear state license plate (mounting hardware is included). The VTL375HD's ultra-slim license plate frame is made of metal and is street legal in all parts of the United States.

Note: The Boyo VTL375HD is designed to work best on vehicles that have a license plate located at the center and above the rear bumper. If your vehicle has a plate location that is offset to the left side, right side or your plate is located under the bumper then the VTL375HD may not provide optimum performance.

Q
Was told there was a reverse image setting but I can't find it. Where is it?
[ Richard  May 08, 2018 ]

A
This unit is just the camera. All the settings are adjusted in your head unit.
[ Charles  May 14, 2018 ]
A
I think the reverse image setting is controlled by the software of the connected device. For me it is a setting in the connected Pioneer radio.

Q
How is the camera powered/activated?
[ Jesse  Apr 30, 2018 ]
4 answers
A
It gets power through the fuse box, and is activated automatically when it goes into reverse.
[ Jim  Apr 30, 2018 ]
A
Easy way is connecting thought back up lights wire
[ WILLIAM  Apr 30, 2018 ]
A
In my case there was a power lead (12v) connected to the back of the stereo. The camera was activated by putting the vehicle in reverse. Tragically the stereo was stolen a week after I installed it. The camera is just a license plate frame, now.
[ Scott  Apr 30, 2018 ]
A
Either through the reverse light wire or if you elect to have it on constantly then through a constant hot wire. I used it in both applications.

Q
Would this work on a 2010 four runner? With the stock navigation screen?
[ V10isez  Aug 07, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.
[ Kenny  Aug 07, 2017 ]  Staff
Q
Can this be installed with the camera on the bottom of the license plate OR the top, interchangeably?
[ Paul  Jan 02, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
All of the information we have on the Boyo VTL375HD indicates it would need to be mounted with the camera on top. The camera's image sensor doesn't have the ability to "flip" orientation--so if the camera was mounted upside down, the image would appear upside down on your in-dash screen. If you would like to discuss further or explore alternate options, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
im trying to figure out if this unit will work with the kenwood DDX373BT. this visability angle seems way better and sleeker design?
[ sklredhead5  Oct 12, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
I can't speak for the Kenwood DDX373BT , it worked great on my Pioneer SPH-DA120. I would assume that if the Kenwood sends 12 volts to the camera from the reverse switch it should work .The specification on the Kenwood should show whether it will accept a reverse camera.
[ LEE GEORGE  Oct 12, 2016 ]
Q
How well does this camera see at night?
[ Jason  Oct 02, 2016 ]
6 answers
A
The camera does well at night with the back up lights illuminating the area. I can see good images to about 5 feet which is good for backing up to a trailer or other object.
[ J Stone  Oct 31, 2016 ]
A
Works great if your vehicle has lights around your license plate!
[ WENDELL  Oct 03, 2016 ]
A
it's OK, it's grainy but very functional
[ Jim  Oct 03, 2016 ]
A
Very well as it uses the illumination from the vehicles backup lights. So the brighter your backup lights the better the camera view. It's also a very clear imaging camera. Recommended.
[ Steven  Oct 03, 2016 ]
A
Not bad at all. It's going to be fuzzy and a little shaded but the reverse lights provide enough light to see directly behind you.
[ Joseph  Oct 03, 2016 ]
A
Sorry Jason, but I can't be any help. I ended up returning the bu camera. I just wasn't sure it was what I wanted, I still don't know. Let me know what you go with and how you like it. Tommy Hutch
