About the Boyo VTC175M Camera Bundle

The backup bundle

Boyo knows that not everyone can fit a video receiver in their dash, so they've bundled a high-quality dash monitor with their VTL17 HD rear-view camera for a convenient backup solution.

The backup bundle

Boyo knows that not everyone can fit a video receiver in their dash, so they've bundled a high-quality dash monitor with their VTL17 HD rear-view camera for a convenient backup solution.

Easily mount this cam

Boyo has affixed their VTL17 camera onto a sturdy strap that attaches behind just about any license plate. This compact camera delivers an HD picture that's great for low-light scenarios, while selectable parking lines and reverse imaging make it a versatile, little addition. The camera includes a video cable that connects to the monitor.

5" monitor

Once wired for power and video with the included wiring harness, Boyo's 5" monitor attaches conveniently to your windshield with its included suction mount for a crisp view that will be a big help when you're in reverse. An included reverse trigger wire ensures you'll only have to see a backup view when your vehicle is in reverse, and two video inputs allow you to add a front-view camera if you need to be mindful of crunching your low-slung bumper.

Problems when installed in 2011 Forester

Guest from Charlottesville, VA on 4/17/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Purchased the VTC175M kit at Crutchfield and had them install it on my 2011 Subaru Forester. But I experienced intermittent video distortion when backing up. Crutchfield added an "Ignition Line Noise Eliminator", but that didn't fix the problem. Crutchfield was kind enough to completely replace the camera and monitor with another identical kit. Unfortunately the video distortion is now continuous. So at least for my car I rate this backup camera kit a "1".

Pros: Don't know

Cons: Doesn't function properly in my 2011 Subaru Forester.

Camera works for 2005 Toyota Highlander, but wiring can be improved

Crutchfield customer from Essex Junction, VT on 11/19/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I wish that the camera wiring can be much improved. As an engineer myself, I find wiring design for all of the aftermarket camera, including this unit, is totally inadequate. RCA video connection is too wide and making it very difficult to snake through small space, particularly through my 2005 Toyota Highlander. A smaller piece such as 1/8" connector would be much more ideal. The camera works great. Video console is too small for the actual road use. I used the video console for diagnostics purpose only to make sure all wiring is good before final connection. I wish that a small piece of rubber grommet can be supplied for easy of installation since this unit requires drilling a 5/16" hole into a vehicle. More ideally, a camera should be screwed onto a vehicle with O-ring seal to prevent water leak. Unfortunately, no such design exist for any after market camera.

Pros: wiring better than most other cameras and small video control is very useful for diagnostic test.

Cons: Wiring not easy to snake through vehicle.

Boyo VTC175M Camera Bundle

Susan from Coconut Creek, FL on 2/7/2018

Before I purchased the backup camera and monitor I confirmed with the company representative that it was compatible with my car Mercedes C250 2013. It was confirmed that it was. Mercedes of this year do not have a constant voltage to the reversing lights. A connection is required to the reversing lights for the monitor to turn on for reversing. When connected the monitor ran for 15 seconds and then turned off for 3 seconds. I contact technical support and was told to connect the live wire to the fuse box this way it would have continuous 12 volts. Now the camera and monitor are on continuous and I have to switch off the monitor manually. Having it on continuous is very distracting. If I had know this before I would not have purchased this product.

It's cold out and I have not felt much like laying under my truck for an hr to run the lines, so i have not done it, but i have hooked it to my battery to take a peak and I'm satisfied. I had a credit with Cruchfield so I only paid 33.00 bucks for the camera so I am very pleased.

Good-quality, inexpensive backup camera, but....

Bill from Parker, CO on 10/8/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Actually, the equipment in this bundle seems to be of good quality, but getting virtually no directions made it very annoying to install. Perhaps a more knowledgeable gadget freak would have fared better, but I was at a loss. I sent a detailed email to the address enclosed for 'technical support' over a week ago and have yet to receive an answer. I called the Boyo 800 number and spoke to a very friendly guy, but whose English was sketchy. I don't think he really understood my questions and I certainly didn't understand his answers. Camera images and screen resolution are fine, but the lack of explanation was maddening. Once hooked up and working, I discovered the monitor has to be manually turned on each time car is started (!) and then the blank screen stays lit while you drive unless manually turned off (!!).

Pros: Equipment seems good quality and the price was very attractive. Crutchfield was great to do business with, too. I didn't call them for help, thinking the manufacturer would be better equipped, but I will this week, just to speak to someone with no language barrier!

Cons: Monitor has integrated on/off switch, so every time you start the car, you have to turn it on. (can't just be left on and controlled by the key) Then, after backing, the blank screen stays on as you drive, unless you reach up and turn it off. Very unsatisfactory. The camera engagement should trigger it on & off. I suspect the generic monitor is made for other uses and not specifically as part of a backup video system?? Maybe a different monitor would solve problem?

Good bright picture

Jim from Ft Myers, FL on 9/1/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The monitor displays a bright image in the South Florida sun that is highly visible and good clarity. The monitor is mounted in a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan via a suction cup (chose not to stick to dash) to the window, resting on the dashboard, on the left side of the steering wheel near the roof pillar support. It is aligned near the outside mirror for ease of rear view visual scanning. The camera was not used as I had a per-existing camera. Crutchfield service is extraordinary. The staff are highly experienced, competent, and helpful. Thank You!

Cons: None

I might buy another one.

Bob from OHIO on 7/14/2017

Great picture. Good monitor size. I think I will buy another one for my pickup. If it holds up in the weather and continues to work, I would call it a good product for the money. Owners manual almost worthless. No good diagrams. If you search You Tube you can get some help. Never found any real good info " easy to understand and slow enough to comprehend " but you can put it together if you read most of the available info. I worked as an electrician for many years and that helped. I would not call it a con but if you do a nice job concealing the wiring and soldering the connections etc. you will need some time to make a good installation. I put it on a Tahoe.

Pros: Great picture. Good monitor size.

Cons: Owners manual almost worthless.

Good quality picture, and viewing angle. The reason I give it four stars instead of five is the windshield mount feels cheep and it's a bit finicky to adjust right. As far as cables go there are plenty long. I'm pleased over all.

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Finicky windshield mount

I purchased this system to replace one I had purchased recently and was very unhappy with its performance. I had not shopped Crutchfield for several years but remembered that I had always been very pleased with the products. I went on line and found exactly what I wanted. I had it professionally installed in my SUV and it is working perfectly. Color and picture definition are great day and night. I am very satisfied.

Pros: Excellent view definition

Cons: I did not feel proficient to install, so I had it installed professionally. This does not differ from any other system I might have bought.

Features

5" LCD Monitor: The Boyo VTC175M includes a 5" LCD monitor with a resolution of 840 x 480 (384,000) and a contrast ratio of 350:1. The LCD monitor can be used as a front view or backup camera monitor, based on how you configure the included camera. The monitor can be mounted to your dash using the included self-adhesive mounting bracket or to your windshield using the included suction-cup mounting bracket. Both brackets allow you to adjust the LCD monitor for the best viewing angle. The monitor also comes with a sunshade to help block sunlight and reduce glare.

  • Camera Input w/ Auto Switching: The LCD monitor features a composite video jack for its camera input to connect the included camera. Thanks to Auto Switching, when you place your vehicle in reverse gear (requires connection to your vehicle's reverse lamp), the LCD monitor will automatically switch over to the backup camera's video signal so you can see what's behind you immediately.
  • Video Input: In addition to the composite video camera input, the LCD monitor features a second composite video input for connecting a front dash camera (sold separately) or other external video source (sold separately).

Camera with License Plate Bracket: The included camera is equipped with a highly sensitive 1/4" color CMOS image sensor. The camera features a waterproof (IP68) housing and a integrated mounting bracket that is designed to mount behind your vehicle's existing license plate. Once the camera and bracket are mounted, you can position the camera forward or angle it down. The mounting hole spacing of the license plate bracket is roughly 6.75" to 7" apart.

  • Rear or Front View: The camera can be used as a backup or front view camera. By default, the camera will display a mirror image for backup use. If you want to use it as a front camera, cut the white wire loop labeled "mirror control" to get normal (non-mirror) image.
  • Parking Guidelines: The camera provides parking assist lines on the screen of the included monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. There are two vertical lines which help you judge the left and right edges of the parking space and your vehicle. There are also three color-coded (green/yellow/red) horizontal lines that are used to distinguish how close you are getting to the end of the parking spot. If you do not need and want to remove the parking guidelines, then simply cut the blue wire loop labeled "Parking Line Control".
Note: The Boyo VTC175M is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear view camera system when backing-up. In addition to using the rear view camera system, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Q
Hey I am new to this, I just want to make sure before I make a purchase that I can connect the camera the back license plate and have the monitor in the front(right by the driver) and it should work correct? Also, how close does the camera need to be to the monitor for the connections to work?

Mine wasn't wireless but the cam bolts on to the license plate hardware. Just pull power for the cam off the back up light (i wanted mine on while I was driving too, so pulled from running light). I installed mine in a Nissan NV200 and there was plenty of adequate gauged wire included so install was pretty straight forward.
[ JOHN  Aug 02, 2017 ]
A
I just installed this camera on my 2007 Ford Ranger Extended Cab pick-up truck. The supplied cabling was JUST long enough to go from the rear license plate to the dashboard on the driver's. The monitor has to sit very close to the left of the dashboard (close to the side of the truck). I put the connections where the camera cable attaches to the long cable behind my left rear tail light. This used up some cable but it's a convenient location if I need to access the connections.
[ Chet  Aug 02, 2017 ]
A
You can mount camera to license bracket and put monitor on the dash. The video cable that comes with it should get you all the way. With a wired system you should be able to go as far as you need. You can buy an extension for the cable if needed. The wiring diagram that comes with the unit leaves a lot to be desired. If you have a problem with it,ask an electrician to help you out. There are several ways you could wire it. On some vehicles you cannot connect extra load to some circuits. I connected mine to the backup light circuit at my trailer hitch receptacle. The camera works when truck is in reverse. You may want yours to work all the time. Something to think about. If you don,t have trailer hitch wiring you may want to ask your dealer where it is best to connect to. Lots of luck and have fum.
[ Robert A.  Aug 01, 2017 ]
A
You can mount camera to license plate bracket and put monitor on the dash. The video cable that comes with the camera should reach all the way in most cars. On a wired system any reasonable length should be okay. Could get extension cable if needed from Radio Shack or the like. The wiring diagrams that come with the unit leave a lot to be desired. You may need to ask an electrician to explain if you have a problem. In many new cars you should not add an extra load to some lighting circuits. Better check with your dealer about where you get power. I connected to the backup lights at my trailer receptacle which should be okay on any car if you have trailer wiring. Mine works only when my Tahoe is in reverse. You might want yours on all the time. Some thing to think about. There are several ways you could wire it. Have fun.

I put this Boyo Camera on a Honda Oddysey. Camera on License Plate and Mounted the Monitor on the Dash.I did have to get a Yellow RCA Camera cable and coupler to extend the Camera cable about three feet. Van is pretty long. I suggest you only use one power source. The 12V that goes active when you go into reverse worked good for me. In the Honda the 12V reverse signal was behind the Drivers side Kick Panel. Their Support team was very good with answering my questions. NCC
[ Nick  Jul 31, 2017 ]
A
It should work fine. The camera is hard wired with an rca cable so the distance between the camera and monitor can be as far as the cables length.
