A smart mirror with 7.3" monitor

Boyo's VTW73M replacement mirror is a convenient solution when adding a touchscreen video receiver isn't an option. Its built-in Wi-Fi Miracast allows you to mirror your Android™ or iPhone® screen on the mirror's 7.3" monitor. It's a great way to keep an eye on your favorite navigation app.

Two video inputs

The mirror blends seamlessly with most vehicle interiors and automatically dims or brightens depending on the time of day. The monitor features two video inputs for front- and rear-view cameras, and control is easy thanks to touchscreen controls and a remote control for adjusting parking lines and more.

Installation

Installation will require the replacement of your factory rear-view mirror, and running wire for power and video between the Boyo VTW73M mirror and any video source. If you have not attempted this kind of job before, we recommend professional installation.

Disappointed (and I generally like everything!)

Crutchfield customer from Memphis, TN on 5/3/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The first didn't work at all and was returned. The second one works, but it's buggy. The on-screen buttons are awfully laggy. It has inputs for "camera" (rear view) and "video" (other view) but there doesn't seem to be an option to just ignore the video feed if you only want a backup camera. (Maybe the thing to do is buy a video splitter to make both feeds the rear camera, rather than having one blank feed.) Also I'm not sure the firmware ever updated, in large part due to the only semi-informative user's manual, but also because of the mirror's very clunky interface. I kind of dread using it.

Pros: Crutchfield has been great about the one being returned.

Cons: Extraordinarily laggy/buggy interface, uninformative user's manual.

Great mirror and monitor

Crutchfield customer from Alexandria, VA on 2/10/2019

Got this since it was the brightest and highest resolution rearview monitor I could find shopping around. No complaints from limited use thus far. It is bright and provides a very nice picture from the rear camera and the miracast works very well with my iPhone. Got it for the rear camera display, but playing with the iPhone casting, it was actually somewhat useful, I was surprised that you could still use it as a rear view mirror even with the iPhone casted on it (day or night) and the speaker on it is very audible. You focus your eyes near for the display and far for the mirror. Installed on a 2013 Mini Countryman using the Mini's OEM mirror mount and having to relocate the remote antenna in the Mini's OEM mirror... not too difficult, but not straightforward. Bought a returned version for a few bucks less and the firmware came already updated and absolutely no issues with the unit.

The good: The unit has a nice fit and finish. The video quality is good. There are two video inputs with individual triggers. The Bad: Miracast has not worked for me but that was not an important feature for me. You cannot watch both video inputs at once. There is a slight turn off pop although not noticable when the car is shutting off.

Works as intended

Stefan from Westmon IL on 4/29/2018

Its nice to Mirror your Phone and backup camera image is great when there is no glare. however when the sun hits it and you are backing up you have to tilt the mirror to see the backup camera image or else it distorts your actual mirror image and backup camera image leaving you in a worse situation than having no backup camera, because now you can't see properly through the mirror either. I will try to remove the coating like one of the reviews says and see if there is an improvement .

Pros: Works fast . OEM look . Nice size good speaker

Cons: Remote is cheap buttons stick and most of them don't seem to function . A lot of glare when you have the backup camera on unless you tilt mirror down . While mirroring gps you have lots of glare issues as well .

Awesome if it works the first time

Cyrus from Maui, HI on 4/11/2018

It would be 5star if the harness worked. One of the camera connections were faulty, the screen would flicker. Made think i had the wrong wire and i cut into another wire to check. Turns out i had it right the first time because i went back to the original reverse wire i opened the first time but used the second pair of cam RCA and trigger wire (video1RCA+purple trigger 1 wire) and it worked perfectly, no flickering. Also the directions are very vague and slightly confusing when it comes to the labels or titles given to each wire and plug. Im a very literal person, i need specific directions. Also my 2014 ram 1500 doesnt have the same mirror button glued to the windshield, so i have to find a professional to remove the metal button glued on my windshield from the old mirror and have them glue the new button on. Using a torch or heat can cause the windshield to shatter, so i dont want to take that risk because its been cold here. Ill let a professional at a windshield shop handle it. 3 stars still because the wide screen shot is awesome with my stock camera also its ok. Also the phone screen on the mirror feature is cool, but i wont use that feature much, i just love the wide screen view.

Pros: Wide screen picture, touch screen or remote, adjustable lines, two camera inputs, phone mirroring, oem look not a clip on.

Cons: Vague and confusing directions for install and labeled wires, back car signal would only flicker images (green wire), doesnt fit my ram 1500 mirrors button so i need a professional to remove old button and glue new button on.

Works as advertised

Robert from Sterling, VA on 1/24/2018

I installed this in a 2007 Toyota Tundra. Fit right out of the box with no need for a mounting adapter. Coupled with a camera bought elsewhere that has the factory connector made installation even easier as I was able to connect to an existing factory harness that runs from the tailgate to the overhead console up front, perfect for this mirror install. (Note, only 2007-2009 Tundras have continuity all the way to the front, later models should check the harness to ensure continuity. Some do, some don't!!) The mirror works very well, though it is a bit dark as the earlier reviewer stated. I am choosing to leave well enough alone for now. Connecting to my Iphone and mirrorcasting works seamlessly. Good product!

Pros: Two camera inputs Good image Switching between inputs, dividing screen or full screen works well Mira Cast works on iOS 11 no problem

Cons: A tad dark as far as mirror goes

After Modification, it's Great

CRAIG from Denver, CO on 5/28/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have installed this device as a monitor to continuously show the rear view from a 90-degree field-of-view camera. It worked OK, but the image from the mirrored surface was distracting. After removing the front surface mirroring using a cerium oxide paste glass polish, it works much better. There is no distracting mirror image, and the monitor image is brighter. I suggest the manufacture offer two models, one with the mirrored surface and one without.

Pros: Convenient size Good image

Cons: Mirror image made monitor image hard to see

Product Research

Feature

Rearview Mirror-Monitor: The BOYO VTW73M combines a 8.5" rearview mirror with an inset 7.3" LCD monitor (1280 x 390) that is centered within the mirror. The thickness of the mirror's glass is 4mm; its highly reflective and strong enough to resist impact.

Note: The rearview mirror-monitor comes with a universal mounting bracket. Crutchfield also offers a variety of vehicle specific mounting brackets which can be purchased separately (see accessory list). In addition to these brackets, you'll also need a windshield mount repair kit which can be purchased at most auto parts store (sold separately).

Split Screen: In addition to filling up the entire 7.3" LCD monitor with one image, you can select split screen which will display two images at once side by side. Now you can view the backup camera input image along with your smartphone's screen mirroring image at the same time on the BOYO VTW73M.

Auto Brightness & Picture Adjustment: Automatic brightness adjustment helps you see a clear image day or night. You can also manually adjust the LCD monitor's brightness, contrast, color.

Screen Mirroring: The BOYO VTW73M allows you to mirror your Apple iOS iPod/iPhone/iPad (via AirPlay) or Android smartphone/table (via Miracast) on the rearview mirror's 7.3" LCD monitor. This allows you to view navigation apps, videos, and photos on the rearview mirror-monitor. If an audio signal is present, then the audio will also be sent along with the video signal.

Camera Input w/ Auto Switching: The BOYO VTW73M features a composite video jack for its camera input, so you can add an external backup camera (sold separately). It also features automatic rear-view switching. This means that when you place your vehicle in reverse gear, the rearview mirror-monitor will automatically switch over to the backup camera's video signal so you can see what's behind you immediately.

Video Input: In addition to the composite video camera input, the rearview mirror-monitor features a second composite video input for connecting a front dash camera (sold separately) or other external video source (sold separately).

Audio Output: The rearview mirror-monitor is equipped with a built-in speaker and also features a set of stereo RCA outputs. The stereo RCA outputs can be used to send the rearview mirror-monitor's audio signal to your vehicle's car stereo system (your car stereo must be equipped with an Aux input).

Remote Control: The BOYO VTW73M comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this rearview mirror-monitor.

Mounting Options: The BOYO VTW73M rearview mirror-monitor replaces your vehicle's existing factory rearview mirror. The rearview mirror-monitor's mounting bracket offers adjustable tilt & swivel.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
I wanted a mirror that would replace the factory mirror and have that OEM look. I also wanted the full wide screen monitor built into the mirror. I like that this model will has an easy power button and can be turned off and used as a regular mirror further restoring a factory look and feel to the vehicle if I need to. [ Chase  Mar 12, 2019 ]
A
miracast and a 7 inch display [ Jalal  Mar 14, 2018 ]
A
I chose this because it uses a 7.3" screen and has two video inputs. I plan to install a front and rear camera to help when parking my truck with an oversized cattle guard on the front in urban parking spaces. I'll mount a switch to direct 12V to the front, rear, or no cameras so I can have a video feed of my choosing regardless of gear selection. [ Travis  Jun 14, 2017 ]

Q
how wide is the mirror (what are the external dimensions?)
[ Ansel  Jan 03, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
I tried to get the measurements as close as possible. The outside of the external is as follows, It is 8 inches across the top and the bottom overall is 9 1/2 inches. From top to bottom it is 3 3/8 inches. If You measure from the top center to the bottom center it is about 1/4 taller for the power button. Hope this helps.

How do I know if it will work with my Android phone? I have a Samsung Note 9

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 and I had to contact the Boyo help desk to get the WIFII link to work. They were very helpful. I called Crutchfield for technical help, and while they were very responsive they were unable to resolve the problem but they did give me the technical help line phone number for Boyo (which I no longer have).

just assume that the miracast wont work. If it ends up working then its a bonus. Its a very good looking mirror screen.

I installed this in My Daughters 2011 Dodge caravan. She uses it with a Samsung phone and it works great. You can hear directions and see maps great. It is a great product.

The specs state it is Android compatible.

Q
Is data being used when mirroring my iPhone?
[ Awesomely   Jun 01, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
If You are mirroring the maps app then I would say it uses data for that. Im guessing it doesnt use any more data. The phone and mirror actually message each other by bluetooth which uses no data to show it on the mirror

A
No

Q
My spare tire makes my rear view mirror useless. Can this mirror show a continuous live feed from a back up camera?
[ Elio  Mar 20, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
Yes, you have the option to view a connected camera at any time by selecting the "camera" input from the mirror buttons or via the included IR remote control. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. Hope that helps!

Q
What is the purple "line 1 trigger" wire for? I understand the green wire for the backup camera "trigger" by hooking to the reverse switch, but the purple wire confuses me.
[ Kelly  Mar 09, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
You could, for example, purchase a very small second camera and install it on the passenger side outside mirror, looking at the blind spot and trigger it with the right hand turn signal or a separate switch (or both!)
[ Robert  Jan 15, 2018 ]
A
When the purple wire is connected to +12 volts, the image on the monitor switches to what is coming in on the yellow plug marked "VIDEO." (Note that the backup camera connects to the yellow plug marked "CAM.")
