Our customers have discovered that this compact sub adds lifelike punch to music and movie soundtracks. This small-but-mighty sub pumps out potent bass that's ideal for small- to medium-sized rooms.

"This nice jewel for a relatively small room really fills out the lower end....I can really rock this room when the house is empty and the cats are anesthetized.”

— Roger, satisfied Crutchfield customer from Santa Rosa, CA

Easy system integration

Line-level and LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) inputs let you easily connect the R-8SW to almost any home theater or stereo receiver. And its back-panel volume, crossover, and phase controls help you fine-tune the bass to your liking.

Quality craftsmanship

The R-8SW is housed in a durable MDF cabinet and is finished with a brushed black polymer veneer. A front-mounted LED power indicator makes it easy to tell when the sub is powered up and ready to rock.

Features

8" Woofer: The Klipsch Reference series R-8SW powered sub is fitted with a powerful 8" copper-spun IMG (injected molded graphite) down-firing woofer for deep bass. The copper-spun IMG woofer is exceptionally light while being extremely rigid, providing remarkable low frequency response with minimal cone breakup and distortion. The down-firing woofer gives you greater placement flexibility than a front-firing woofer.

50 Watt Amp: The Klipsch R-8SW powered sub employs an all-digital 50 watt RMS (150 watt Peak) amplifier for high efficiency and dynamic bass performance.

MDF Cabinet: The R-8SW is housed in a durable MDF cabinet and finished with a brushed black polymer veneer. The MDF enclosure is rigid and protects against unwanted vibration and distortion.

Down Firing Port: The R-8SW's enclosure uses a bass reflex design with a down-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass.

Controls: The level control, low pass crossover, and phase control allow you to blend the powered subwoofer's low-frequency tones with your system's other speakers, as well as establish the ideal level of bass.

  • Level Control: The level control adjusts the subwoofer's volume relative to the rest of your home audio system. After the sub's level control has been set, the volume control of your AV receiver will be the volume control for both the Klipsch powered subwoofer and your connected loudspeakers.
  • Low Pass Crossover: The variable lowpass crossover is adjustable from 40-120Hz. The crossover point chosen determines where low bass frequencies are "handed-off" from your AV system's loudspeakers to the Klipsch powered subwoofer. Set the crossover point based on the size of your systems' main left/right speakers.
  • Phase Control: This control is used to acoustically match the subwoofer's output to your main speakers. Select the position either 0˚ or 180˚ in which your subwoofer has more output at the listening position.

LFE/RCA Inputs: The Klipsch R-8SW powered subwoofer is equipped with a pair of line-level RCA-type inputs to connect the sub to your receiver or integrated amplifier.

  • LFE Input: Most of today's AV receivers have a line-level subwoofer output (LFE). If your receiver has an LFE output, connect one end of a subwoofer cable (sold separately) to this output and connect the other end of the cable into the powered subwoofer's line-level input labeled "LEFT/LFE". Set the powered sub's built-in crossover to "LFE" with this type of connection.
  • Stereo Input: In absence of a subwoofer (LFE) output on your receiver, as an alternative hookup, you can connect Left & Right channel pre-amp outputs from the receiver to both the "Left/LFE" and "Right" inputs on the powered subwoofer.

LED Indicator: The front-mounted LED power indicator lets you know when the sub is powered on or off. The LED will light green when the powered subwoofer is on and receiving a signal. If the LED is dark and not lit, the powered sub is off.

Auto Power On/Off: The powered subwoofer will automatically turn On when it senses an audio signal. It will automatically go into "Standby mode" after 15-20 minutes with no audio signal. You can also choose to turn the powered sub On or Off manually from the rear-switch on the back.

Placement: Klipsch powered subwoofers are designed to reproduce deep bass and deliver the impact that makes your movies and music come alive. For optimum performance, place your subwoofer in a corner of the room on the same wall as your front channel speakers. Please note that room placement can have a dramatic effect on the performance of your powered subwoofer. Corner placement, as suggested above, will increase the amount of bass output, while placing the subwoofer along the middle of a wall, or out in the room will decrease the amount of bass output.

Q
I am seeking to add a subwoofer to complement my Klipsch RP-500M Bookshelf speakers. I am using an Onkyo TX-8255 receiver. Would the R-80SWi be a good match and how would I plug it into the receiver since I see no subwoofer specific outputs?
cristian  Dec 27, 2023

A
Greetings Cristian. Thank you for your question. There is no subwoofer output on the TX 8255 receiver. only a select few subwoofers will work with it. Those need to have speaker level in which none of the current Klipsch subwoofers have. You can either get a sub with speaker level in, and connect it to the B channels on the 8255, or you would need a sub with speaker level in as well as speaker level out, and wire the sun inline with your speakers, like a daisy chain. We have filters on the subwoofer page to filter for those options. If you need more help, call one of our advisors at 800-324-9695 for more assistance.

Q
I am interested in purchasing a sub to complement my JBL stage a170. It is for a medium room. I don't want the basses to be the protagonists but to enhance them a bit and my budget is not much higher than what this sub comes out of. Is it worth it or will I not notice much difference?
tomirand  Jun 24, 2022

A
Adding a sub to any system will add more dynamic and dimension not mention better bass separation. Depending on how much power you're giving the JBL speakers you have, the 50 watt rms Klipsch Reference R-8SW likely won't make much of a difference in your set up. The JBL Stage A170's actually produce a good amount of bass alone, but adding a sub woofer will deliver more immersive sound. We would recommend something with a little more power to compliment those JBL speakers a bit better. We'd love to know a little more about your system to make a better subwoofer recommendation! If you'd like to give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 we're happy to help!

Its a power subwoofer. Plug it in, connect to the Receiver with RCA cables.

This subwoofer has its own amplifier with power chord.

You'll still need the power cord for the sub. Your receiver will not provide the power.

Hi, I bought a Klipsch R-8SW and when I turn it on or off it makes a thump. It's normal? Thank you

Mine has done this since day 1, now going on 2 years. Weird but doesn't seem to effect anything and now we don't even notice it anymore.

Sounds normal to me. After a couple days you won't even notice it.

I have two of theses subs. One makes the noise as you describe and the other does not.
randy  Aug 07, 2020
A
Not sure if that is normal, but mine does as well.
robert  Aug 07, 2020
A
Evidently it is. I read a number of reviews before I bought it that complained about the thump but I bought it anyway because I really wanted the small footprint and downward facing speaker for a small room. I only find it slightly annoying (more comical really) but not enough to take away from my satisfaction with the overall performance.
robert m  Aug 07, 2020
A
Yes, this is normal and the only way to avoid it is to keep the unit powered on (not on auto setting which turns the amp on/off with signal presence). The amp draws very little current when on with no signal present.
kevin c.  Aug 07, 2020

The only time that mine "thumps" is if I unplug it to move. The best way to eliminate that problem is not to plug the AC power cord into your amp or receiver. Plug it directly into a wall outlet
elton  Aug 07, 2020
A
Mine thumps too, but otherwise my R-8SW has worked fine in the 18 months I have had it, so I haven't really considered it to be a problem. The start-up thump is probably normal behavior for this model.
earl  Aug 07, 2020
A
It does make an unusually loud thump compared to other subs. That also bothered me a bit. I'm sure nothing is wrong as it's a nice performing sub for the money. Ultimately, I decided to upgrade to something different.

Q
Hi Guys,I wanted to purchase a Klipsch sub R-8SW but i had an old TUBE AMP that only have L and R speakers outlet, would like to know how am I going to hook it up to Klipsch sub that don't have high level line in or speaker line in ??? please advice Regards Francis

A
If your receiver/amplifier does not offer a pair of RCA pre-amp outputs or a dedicated subwoofer (mono RCA) output, you'll want to consider using a different powered subwoofer model that does offer the "Speaker Level" inputs and outputs: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_12300/Powered-Subwoofers.html?tp=187#&nvpair=AG_General_Features|YCSpeaker@Level_Outputs
