Our take on the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-500SA

Building a Dolby Atmos® home theater system with Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers? Then I recommend these voice-matched "toppers" to experience overhead sound effects without having to install in-ceiling speakers.

3-dimensional Klipsch surround sound

Building a Dolby Atmos® home theater system with Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers? Then I recommend these voice-matched "toppers" to experience overhead sound effects without having to install in-ceiling speakers.

Each RP-500SA sits on top of a compatible Reference Premiere floor-standing or bookshelf speaker. An upward-firing 5-1/4" spun-copper woofer and 1" horn-loaded tweeter in each cabinet reflect sound off the ceiling for immersive overhead effects.

Do you have an Atmos-capable receiver?

Since these speakers connect to your receiver's "height" channels for power and signal, a home theater receiver with Dolby Atmos is required for operation.

Using them for my 11.3.4 system as dolby atmos speakers. Cannot say how happy I was that I purchased them. As someone before me mentioned....'worth every penny". I agree.

Flawed face/veneer grain pattern

Scott from New Port Richey, FL on 12/17/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very, very disappointed that these speakers look gray, instead of black on top of my Klipsch cherry finish towers - especially in daylight. Nothing like the photos. Should have opted for the piano black finish (at a premium - seriously?) Also there is a bad pattern flaw on the front face the plasti-wood veneer of one speaker. It looks like a knockoff or a scratch and dent compared to my other Klipsch speakers.

Pros: Magnetic grill cover is excellent. Foot pads and wall mount options a plus.

Cons: Not available in cherry, or in dark black - without gouging customer. Grain pattern was flawed and glaringly obvious on one speaker. I have owned Klipsch for 22 years and quality/price ratio is slipping.

Fantastic. Using 4 of them with my Klipsch/Anthem AVM 60/Velodyne sub set up and they perform very well.7.2.4 sounds great. The Atmos experience is really immersive with these speakers. They are solidly built ,heavy, as are all Klipsch speakers. I am a Klipsch guy for over 25 years. Could not be more pleased. They are keepers.Highly recommended.

Pros: Full Atmos experience.Solid build quality.

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Dove right into ATMOS soundtracks once I got these hooked up and never looked back. They added a nice sense of expanded soundstage for movies. Quality is on par with the usual Klipsch builds, fit and finish are wonderful, and they have been a nice addition to my full Klipsch speaker setup, consisting of RF7-III, RC-64 III, RP280F and SVS subs. I am hoping to mount them on the wall soon, for now I'm using the "Ceiling Bounce" mode. Because of the sheer size and volume of my RF7-III I did need to bump up the levels on these a bit but found a nice level I'm happy with.

Pros: Awesome Klipsch build quality and sound as expected.

Cons: None

  • Titanium LTS Vented Tweeter: The titanium tweeter diaphragm's light weight yet rigid composition exceeds the performance of aluminum, polymer or silk tweeters. A vented tweeter design reduces standing waves behind the tweeter diaphragm for a smoother high frequency reproduction. Klipsch award-winning Linear Travel Suspension technology leverages a piston motion of the titanium diaphragm that lowers distortion and delivers real-to-life sound. A ceramic magnet housing provides premium performance,
  • Hybrid Tractrix Horn Technology: This redesigned 90°x90° Hybrid Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The Hybrid Tractrix Horn's compressed molded silicon face adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and horn resonance for a smoother frequency response with improved detail - creating a clean and natural sound. Klipsch also utilizes computer modeled phase plugs that act as a mechanical filter to further ensure a smooth, flat frequency response while protecting the tweeter from damage.

Cerametallic consists of extremely light, rigid materials that can hold shape while being able to deliver lower frequencies with maximum efficiency. The Klipsch Cerametallic cone is matted to a dual-layer, copper-wound voice coil for exceptional conductivity. The 5.25" woofer is housed in a non-resonating, stamped-steel basket that's secured to a large magnet motor for exceptional efficiency and low distortion.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

Did not want to buy new towers to get Dolby Atmos as my RF-3s have been going strong for many years, so these sitting on top were the best choice, plus the larger driver (than 140s) was better for my setup. [ THOMAS  Nov 16, 2018 ]
I LIKE THE PRICE [ DONALD  Nov 15, 2018 ]
Because the versatility [ Pedro C. Pagan  Oct 27, 2018 ]
Have some Klipsch bookshelf speakers that match, but mostly specs showed these could handle more power than other atmos height speakers. Didn't want to start over with floor standing speakers, thought this addition would be great without installing ceiling speakers. [ Jeff  Nov 23, 2018 ]

3 questions already asked

I've searched too and only found where they said it conforms to dolby atmos specifications(whatever these are). [ Craig  Dec 05, 2018 ]
Sorry no; there is no provision for the speakers to be ceiling mounted. They can be placed on top of your front left & right (tower or bookshelf) speakers, firing upwards to bounce the effects off the ceiling (and back down into the listening area) or they can be wall-mounted for use as side or rear surround sound speaker. They have a rear-panel crossover switch that changes between Atmos and Surround speaker modes for optimized performance. [ Ryan  Nov 24, 2018 ]  Staff
Leave it on Atmos [ Matt  Dec 30, 2018 ]
i'm sorry,i can't answer that question because i put the Atmos on top of the front speakers. [ ADONIS H  Dec 28, 2018 ]
I currently have my speakers on surround while elevate on my wall because my receiver does not have atmos. But when it is upgraded I will change the switch to atmos. [ LaTasha  Dec 28, 2018 ]
