Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-600M bookshelf speaker

Each Reference Premiere RP-600M bookshelf speaker features a horn-loaded tweeter for ultra-smooth highs.

Hybrid horn technology for dynamic performance

Horn technology is one of Klipsch's long-standing hallmarks. Flared openings in the speaker cabinet project sound waves toward your listening area and prevent them from simply spilling out in all directions. This design reduces reflections that can color the sound, and boosts dynamics and efficiency for powerful, "front row" sound that remains crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Klipsch's Tractrix® horn features a circular throat around an advanced titanium diaphragm tweeter that transitions into a square 90º x 90º mouth. This unique shape provides a cleaner, more efficient transition of sound waves into your listening space. The result is a wide listening "sweet spot" with precise placement of instruments and vocals.

A horn that enhances bass, too

Take a look at the back of these speakers and you'll find that instead of the conventional round port tube found on many speakers, Klipsch uses a Tractrix horn-shaped opening for smoother, more efficient airflow in and out of the cabinet. The resulting decrease in air turbulence makes for cleaner, more powerful bass with reduced port noise and low-frequency distortion.

Because these speakers are rear-ported, I recommend pulling them away from your wall or the back of the bookshelf to give them room to "breathe."

Bi-amp or bi-wire for even better sound

On the back of each speaker you'll find two sets of speaker input terminals. These let you bi-amp or bi-wire your RP-600Ms to get the best sound out of them.

Features

1" Horn-Loaded Tweeter: The Klipsch RP-600M bookshelf loudspeaker features a 1" Titanium LTS Vented Tweeter with a Hybrid Tractrix Horn for exceptional high frequency response, detail, and dispersion. Klipsch proprietary Tractrix horn-loaded technology ensures high-frequency energy of the RP-600M bookshelf speakers are aimed directly at the listener and reduces unwanted, artificial reverb caused by indirect sound bouncing off walls - meaning you experience the most clear, detailed, lifelike sound possible.

  • Titanium LTS Vented Tweeter: The titanium tweeter diaphragm's light weight yet rigid composition exceeds the performance of aluminum, polymer or silk tweeters. A vented tweeter design reduces standing waves behind the tweeter diaphragm for a smoother high frequency reproduction. Klipsch award-winning Linear Travel Suspension technology leverages a piston motion of the titanium diaphragm that lowers distortion and delivers real-to-life sound. A ceramic magnet housing provides premium performance,
  • Hybrid Tractrix Horn Technology: This redesigned 90°x90° Hybrid Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The Hybrid Tractrix Horn's compressed molded silicon face adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and horn resonance for a smoother frequency response with improved detail - creating a clean and natural sound. Klipsch also utilizes computer modeled phase plugs that act as a mechanical filter to further ensure a smooth, flat frequency response while protecting the tweeter from damage.

6.5" Cerametallic Woofer: The RP-600M bookshelf loudspeaker utilizes a 6.5" Klipsch Proprietary Cerametallic woofer. Cerametallic consists of extremely light, rigid materials that can hold shape while being able to deliver lower frequencies with maximum efficiency. The Klipsch Cerametallic cone is matted to a dual-layer, copper-wound voice coil for exceptional conductivity. The 6.5" woofer is housed in a non-resonating, stamped-steel basket that's secured to a large magnet motor for exceptional efficiency and low distortion.

Rear Tractrix Port: The rear Tractrix port of the RP-600M bookshelf loudspeaker is perfectly matched to the cabinet and woofer, creating ideal airflow with minimal distortion and turbulence even at the lowest frequencies. Klipsch Tractrix ports have custom designed inner flares that help reduce air turbulence entering the port. Less turbulent air helps reduce port noise for cleaner, more powerful bass.

MDF Cabinet: The Klipsch RP-600M bookshelf speaker features a MDF cabinet with a scratch-resistant, textured wood grain vinyl that seamlessly integrates into almost any room or decor. The enclosure's reinforced MDF construction reduces cabinet vibration for less audible coloration and improved sonic accuracy. The MDF enclosure also features a satin painted baffle with a scratch resistant design for an elegant look without the grille.

Acoustically Transparent Grille: The Klipsch RP-600M bookshelf loudspeaker comes with a removable, black cloth grille that is magnetic and acoustically transparent. This strong magnetic grille provides protection and a sleek aesthetic look to compliment your home's decor.

Dual Binding Posts: The Klipsch RP-600M is fitted with two sets of sturdy binding posts allowing to bi-amp or bi-wire the bookshelf loudspeaker. These binding posts ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-lugs and bare wire (up to 10AWG). Two plastic caps will need to be removed to use banana plugs.

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

Mounting Options: The Klipsch RP-600M can be placed on a speaker stand, bookshelf, table, or other flat surface. The bookshelf loudspeaker comes with self-adhesive rubber feet to secure the speaker in place and prevent any damage to your stand's or shelf's surface. The rubber feet add approximately 0.125" to the overall height of the speaker.

Note: There are no included brackets, keyhole slots, or threaded inserts to wall-mount the speaker.

Application & Placement: The Klipsch RP-600M bookshelf loudspeaker can be used in a dedicated stereo application or in a home theater application as front and/or rear speakers.

  • Front Placement: For optimum performance in a stereo application or as front speakers in a home theater application, Klipsch suggests placing the loudspeakers 6' to 15' apart. They may also be toed-in slightly for better stereo imaging. The listening position should be about 1 to 1.5x the distance separating the speakers.
  • Rear Placement: When used as surround speakers in a home theater setup, the loudspeakers should be placed approximately 2' above the listening position. Typically this will be approximately 5' to 7' above the floor. The surrounds should be placed on the walls directly adjacent to the listening position. Another option would be on the wall behind the listening position.

Reference Premiere Series: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series utilizes a redesigned hybrid 90°x90° Tractrix Horn, a vented LTS titanium tweeter, Cerametallic woofer construction, and Tractrix geometry port technology for sound that will envelope you and blow you away. The Reference Premiere series by Klipsch consists of a variety of floorstanding, bookshelf, center, and surround speakers (all sold separately). Click on the Accessories Tab to find more Reference Premiere series speakers for your home system.

Optional Powered Sub: For bigger & deeper bass response, pair the Klipsch Reference Premiere series loudspeaker with one of Klipsch's powered subwoofers (sold separately - click on Accessories Tab).

Customer Q&A

Q
Hi, folks. Finally set up my old stereo equipment and ran my speaker wire. Can I connect basic speaker wire to these speakers (exposed wire going into a terminal, or wrapped around a post) or do I need a special type of connector to plug into the speaker? This is a bit of an old guy operation, so my speaker wire is the regular left terminal/right terminal wire that's been around forever. Thanks.
roderick  Oct 08, 2023
1 answer
A
It is possible to connect bare speaker wire to the terminals. Turn the plastic terminals counterclockwise enough to reveal holes in the speaker post under the plastic covers. Put the wire through the hole, then turn the plastic terminals clockwise to tighten them onto the wire.

Q
For the RP 600 speakers, does it matter which set (upper-lower) of red/black posts are used for a single amp connection?
ron  Mar 04, 2022
4 answers
A
It does not matter which set you use as long as the gold brackets are still attached to connect the 2 top posts to the bottom ones. If you remove these connectors it would allow you to bi amp the speakers. If you are just using one amp then it does not matter which ones you connect the speakers to. Hope this helped. Dan
dan  Mar 06, 2022
A
As long as the jumpers are on doesn't matter which one you use
jose  Mar 06, 2022
A
I returned mine but from the picture it appears the top and bottom binding posts are connected via a conductor...which is the case on all speakers I have used. So it doesn't matter which set of binding posts you use as long as the conducted linking the top and bottom is in place. Some folks remove this so that the tweeter and bass drivers can be powered by different amplifiers.
ian  Mar 05, 2022
A
No, it doesn't matter. There is a bridging strap connecting the two reds and two blacks. Whichever one you connect to, the bridging strap will connect to the other one.

A
I had a tweeter issue also.. I called tech at Klipsch directly. They sent me a new tweeter free of charge. I did the replacement myself .... just screws and and reattach the +/- wires. Not a problem since.
mark  Jul 11, 2021
A
If they are in warranty, contact Crutchfield first and find out from them what the process is for having it repaired. If it is out of warranty I would contact Klipsch and get their take on it.

Make sure jumpers are all properly connected with good contact if not bi-wired or bi-amped. That is all you can do.

Q
Any good options for a ceiling mount?
dennis  Jun 08, 2021
4 answers
A
Yes, you'll need to buy or make your own extension bracket so as to keep some space from the wall and speaker, ten inches away from the wall will do, just remember to use a sturdy bracket.
earl  Jul 10, 2021
A
I wouldn't recommend it . They are heavy & sounds better being on a stable stand or hung stable on the wall . They do have great ceilings mount speakers too
kevin o  Jun 10, 2021
A
Will have to custom make for ceiling, if you mean ceiling, or are you talking "wall" mount? Either way you should google the question for best results, as these speakers are a bit heavy! Goog Luck!!!

I use spade ends on my speakers, but you can pop the end caps off the terminals and probably use banana ends. Good luck.

are these good for surrounds or rear surrounds? I also have the RP-502s for surrounds so which would be best placement for this setup? Thank you

A
Yes
earl  Jul 10, 2021

These will work for surrounds I use them and they are great speakers don't think you will go wrong with them
randall  Dec 07, 2020
A
If you have the room to fit ten. The 600 m are very good speaker I Don't know what your using for front L/R either way you will need stands to get the proper sound from the speakers. Thx
james  Dec 06, 2020
A
I use these as my front L & R - surround or rear surround would be good (and maybe overkill since they get so much less attention) - just be aware that they have a good depth to them, so they will be out from the walls. I use Klipsch R-41SA as my rear surrounds in 7.2. Consider them for their wall mounting profile and easier angling if mounting on a wall.
reid  Dec 06, 2020
A
They would be just fine for surrounds. I am currently using them for that placement. They can handle plenty of power!! Awesome speakers.
michael  Dec 06, 2020
Q
HI, Im reviewing the Klipsch RP-600 bookshelf speakers for possible purshase, and i want to know what speaker stands would best fit them, and how is the stand attached to the speaker so that they are secure?
james  Nov 23, 2020
5 answers
A
Call Crutchfield for an answer, they will help you to make a choice.
earl  Jul 10, 2021
A
I can't answer your question as to stands, but as to the speakers I can give you my opinion that they are worth the purchase! Had mine for 6 months now and use them as rear surrounds, and they sound great!!! You may want to try" you tube" to find good stands for them. I have them on side tables that are ear high when seated and that works perfectly.
wayne m  Nov 24, 2020
A
I bought some used Paradigm stands off craigs list and placed the speakers on them, they sounded ok until I filled the stands with sand and it made them sound better. The stands are now solid, heavy and sturdy and the flat rubber inserts on the flat top of the stands hold the speakers in place. I am also getting the RP-600 speaker upgrade kit from GR Research which will significantly improve their sound quality
louis  Nov 24, 2020
A
Sorry, but I don't have speaker stands. They sit on a shelf 11 feet off the floor.
warren h  Nov 24, 2020
A
The speakers are great . Only a smooth base area with no means to secure. Many sturdy stands are avail.
roger  Nov 23, 2020

A
You need an amplifier.
earl  Jul 10, 2021
A
These are not powered speakers but are very sensitive and don't require gobs of power to sound good.
miles  Nov 10, 2020
A
No, these are not powered, you will need an amplifier, but if you don't want to use an amplifier because of space may I suggest using instead the Klipsch Five's, these are powered and do not take up much space and they sound awesome while still looking great.
earl  Nov 09, 2020
A
These are not powered speakers, so you will need an amplifier to drive these.
anindya  Nov 09, 2020
A
These speakers require an amplifier to power them.

Can I wall mount?

Yes, but give it some space away from the wall using an extension bracket because of the port-hole.
earl  Jul 10, 2021
A
No. There is a bass port in the back and no wall mounting features anywhere on the speaker.
randal  Nov 09, 2020
A
Yes, but they sound much better away from the wall.
earl  Nov 09, 2020
A
no,this speaker has a port located on the rear of the cabinet.wall-mounting this speaker will block this port, adversly affecting the bass responseNOT recommended.
steve  Nov 09, 2020
A
I wouldn't buy this if I was going to put it up against a wall. Look for something smaller and front ported.
james  Nov 09, 2020
A
This is could vs. should: one certainly could, but I don't think one should. I guess it depends on how they are going to be used. They truly benefit from being off the wall, toed-in, and angled relative to the listener's seating position.
mark  Nov 09, 2020
A
For best sound, it's recommended to place them a foot or three from the rear wall. I have mine on stands and they sound superb!

A
I bi-Wired my Yamaha receiver to these speakers, and it should be the same process for your receiver . Connect two sets of cables to each speaker, remove the brass bridges that connect the jacks in the back of the speaker, and you're good to go. If you have questions about your receiver, best to address that question to someone with that product.

Yes
earl  Jul 10, 2021
A
Absolutely, these speakers are so efficient that I myself have just for fun ran them through a 15-watt amp, and they performed flawlessly as I expected, I mean, after all, they are Klipsch.
earl  Nov 09, 2020
A
They are very sensitive and agile speakers. I listen to them everyday for one to three hours a day 85 watts should be more than ample.
miles  Aug 27, 2020
A
Yes!These speakers are very efficient.Your Yamaha will sound great with these speakers.
steve  Aug 13, 2020
A
The RP 600m is a very versatile speaker. If you already have the Yamaha you will be fine. Remember the more power the better. I am not saying this for volume because the Klipsch will get loud with very little wattage, but more in terms of headroom. They are efficient but they like power as well.
michael  Aug 13, 2020
A
Absolutely These are incredible speakers that totally belie their size These along with a subwoofer make a great system Your Yamaha will shine
richard  Aug 13, 2020
Q
Can you place these on their sides or do they need to be used with horn on top?
carl  Aug 12, 2020
6 answers
A
Yes, these can be placed on their sides or even upside down.
earl  Jul 10, 2021
A
Yes, these can be placed on their side, upside down, or just simply right side up.
earl  Nov 09, 2020
A
I never tried them on their side and returned them after deciding I didn't like the sound at all.
joachim  Aug 12, 2020
A
These would work on their sides, but you may sacrifice some sound quality as they were meant to be positioned with the woofer below the tweeter and with the tweeter at ear-level when seated. I suppose, if you can get the tweeter at ear-level, the speakers being on their sides might not be a big deal.
cale  Aug 12, 2020
A
I haven't experimented with side placement of the Klipsch, preferring an upright position due to space constraints and my own aesthetic sense. One of the advantages of bookshelf-sized speakers is the flexibility to place any way you want. Sonically it would make little difference. Go for it!
gary duane  Aug 12, 2020
A
You can place them in either configuration. They provide rubber stick on feet that can be applied to any side. I have them on their sides and they sound great.
ray  Aug 12, 2020

Q
How would these speakers perform ON a bookshelf? Or, do they need to be on floor stands? Thanks!
jason  May 22, 2019
12 answers
A
They perform well on a bookshelf as long as they have some space of at least 6-8 inches behind them, on floor stands, they also need at least 6-8 inches behind them, I myself have mine 3 feet from the wall on floor stands and they sound great.
earl  Nov 09, 2020
A
A bookshelf would be a perfect stand. You just need something that won't easily move.
mary  Aug 12, 2020
A
They work just fine on a bookshelf or entertainment center
james  Sep 27, 2019
A
I have mine on 24 inch stands about 3 feet from the back wall and they sound great like that, even in the kitchen. ?? Open floorplan you know!
steve  Jun 02, 2019
A
Mine are on the top of my kitchen cabinets and they fill the kitchen with sound. Don't think you need floor stands.
steve  May 23, 2019
A
Either would be fine, check the dimensions for bookshelf placement. I plan to use wall-mount brackets...
william  May 23, 2019
A
Perfect for a book shelf. Killer speaker set up!
peter  May 22, 2019
A
Great on a bookshelf! I have them on stands and a friend has them on a bookshelf and they sound fantastic.
michael  May 22, 2019
A
This pair is intended for bookshelves. I have a pair on bookshelves and I love the sound of them.
mary  May 22, 2019
A
My Klipsch RP-600M sit nicely on top of a deeper bookshelf. You do want to make sure the shelf is deep enough, because the speakers are larger than they appear. The large port for air flow on the back of the speakers means you want to make sure there is space between the speaker and the wall. So far these speakers have performed beyond my expectations and sound great on top of my shelf.
joshua  May 22, 2019
A
Tradition gives these speakers the "bookshelf" moniker, albeit they don't belong on a bookshelf. These speakers benefit by having room to breathe. YMMV, but in my room, they are off the back wall by about 18", and are on stands that compliment my listening position.
mark  May 22, 2019
A
They're ported in the back so they shouldn't really be enclosed in a bookshelf.
randal  May 22, 2019

Do I have to Bi Wire the Klipsch rp 600 m? Or can I just run one + and one - to my vintage receiver? Can I just use two of the 4 terminals?
michael  Sep 02, 2020

A
no need to bi-wire.
jeff  Sep 02, 2020
A
Yes, you can use just two terminals. There is a post connecting bar included that bridges the two - and + posts (on each speaker) for this very purpose. If you want to connect an additional amp, you'd remove the connecting bar.
danny  Sep 02, 2020
A
Yes. That's how most users do it. It comes ready to use with just one pair of wires, from the factory. Just leave the "straps" in place, and it will work as you intend.
james  Sep 02, 2020
A
By default it is jumpered and only requires 2 wires.

There are two sets of bindings posts for Biamping. Where you can hook up one amplifier to drive the treble, and a second to drive the bass. They are clearly color coded and if you only use one amp. It's straight forward. One red one black. If you use two Amplifiers yo need to remove the connector strip and then use on of each color per amplifier. I have multiple Amplifiers but I have never biamped mine. I use vintage Amplifiers just my preference. You can look up Biamping and see if it's for you but they sound good hooked up conventionally. There is a break in period for these speakers and I also recommend to try different distances from the wall it makes a lot of difference in sound. Fun speakers.

Staggered binding posts are in fact a feature. It is much easier to route and connect heavy gauge wires. If a user is confused by black and red, well, I don't know what to say. Further, once I connected the speaker wires, I tend to see the speakers from the front. Red to +, black to -. Leave the straps on unless you are bi-wiring or bi-amping, in which case you will appreciate the layout even more.

Patrick, I'm not sure why they're staggered (perhaps to reduce the risk of a short circuit) but they are color coded in standard red/black so easy to hook up correctly. The speakers are terrific (the reviewers were right), highly recommended. Chip

I would say between 24" and 30" depending on your chair height when you are listening. My stands are around 21 inches and I kept slouching in my chair get my ears lower.

3 to 4 feet. Mine are sitting on older speakers at this time

I tried the old advice to have the tweeter at ear level and found that it worked best for us in our listening room. This required us to flip the speakers upside down on our 30 inch stands.

Hi Jeff, I'm using a 24 inch stand and it puts the tweeters right at ear level while sitting on my couch.

I utilize these as my front speakers for a 5.1 home theater setup. They are placed at ear level about 10 ft apart while seating down. When playing music they fill my room.

Depends on how high you seat! I'd say 24in high stands are ideal.
