Powerful Klipsch sound in a flat, wall-mountable design

Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers have been putting smiles on our customers' faces for years. Their sound is all Klipsch: powerful, hard-hitting, and dynamic — yet accurate and refined, too. With the RP-640D, Klipsch has managed to fit that same great Reference Premiere performance in a thin, flat design that'll look right at home next to your wall-mounted TV.

Versatile options for your home theater installation

This speaker includes a mounting bracket for on-wall installations, plus a nice-looking glass base for placement on a tabletop. Mount one horizontally under your TV to use it as a center channel speaker, and place two more vertically to the sides of the screen to complete the front soundstage of an all-Klipsch home theater. Those iconic copper woofers can make a bold visual statement, or you can use the wraparound magnetic grille to keep 'em under wraps for a more discreet look.

Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-640D speaker

Wall-mount the versatile Klipsch RP-640D by your TV, or place it on a tabletop using the included glass base.

Classic Klipsch sound

Klipsch famously mounts their tweeters inside of a flared opening, or horn. This feature helps control the way sound waves are projected into your room, for crisp, focused highs. The 90° x 90° Tractrix® horn used in the Reference Premiere series is a refined version that delivers a wider sweet spot with more precise placement of instruments and vocals.

The RP-640D teams its 1" titanium tweeter with a pair of 3-1/2" copper-spun woofers plus four more passive copper cones that help reinforce the bass frequencies. It all adds up to rich, full sound from a flat-panel speaker that fits easily on your wall or TV stand.

Build a complete Klipsch on-wall system

You can use three RP-640Ds for a powerful front home theater soundstage. Or mix and match as space allows with the smaller RP-240D. For surrounds, consider the ultra-compact RP-140D. And remember, for maximum home theater impact, we recommend adding a powered subwoofer of your choice.

Product Research

Features

Horn-Loaded Tweeter: The Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-640D features proprietary Tractrix Horn technology coupled with a Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) titanium tweeter to produce clean, natural high frequencies.

  • 90° x 90° Tractrix Horn: The Tractrix Horn's geometry helps to improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The 90° x 90° Tractrix Horn also focuses the high frequency sounds towards the listening area, for the cleanest, most natural sound possible.
  • LTS Tweeter: Behind the Tractrix Horn lies a 1" titanium tweeter with a Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance.

Spun-Copper Cerametallic Woofers & Passive Radiators: The RP-640D loudspeaker features two 3.5" woofers and four 3.5" passive radiators made from Klipsch's distinctive, spun-copper Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, the cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The woofers and passive radiators also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

ABS Enclosure w/ Wrap-Around Grille: The speaker enclosure is made of ABS and features a matte black painted finish. The speaker also comes with a removable, wrap-around cloth magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over the ABS enclosure.

Spring-Post Terminals: The RP-640D is equipped with spring-post terminals to connect bare speaker wire from 16AWG to 12AWG. Due to the position of the spring-post terminals they will not accept banana plugs or pin-connectors.

Applications: The RP-640D on-wall speaker can be used as a front, center, or surround speaker in a home theater setup.

  • Placement for Front Speakers: For the most spacious sound place a pair of speakers 6' to 15' apart with the listening position about 1-.5x the distance separating the speakers. However, excellent sound can still be achieved by placing these speakers close to both sides of your TV if that is more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Placement for Center Speaker: Since a center-channel speaker is designed to place dialogue and primary sounds so that they appear to come from the video screen. The speaker should therefore be placed horizontally, as close to the screen as possible, preferably at least 1" directly below the screen.
  • Placement for Rear speakers: As rear surrounds, a pair of speakers should be placed approximately 2' above the listening position (typically this will be about 5'-7'above the floor. The surrounds should be placed on the walls directly adjacent to the listening position or on the wall behind the listening position.

Mounting Options: The RP-640D on-wall loudspeaker can be mounted vertically or horizontally when wall-mounted or attached to the included table-top base. The included wall-bracket and dual four-way keyhole slots allow for easy, tight-to-the-wall mounting (mounting screws not included). The included glass base provides a table-top solution for placing the speaker on a stand, table, or shelf (the base attaches to the speaker using the two included screws).

  • Wall-Mount Dimensions:
    • Vertical: 6.0" (w) x 28.5" (h) x 2.5625" (d)
    • Horizontal: 28.5" (w) x 6.0" (h) x 2.5625" (d)
  • Table-Top Dimensions:
    • Vertical: 9.0" (w) x 29.9375" (h) x 6.0625" (d)
    • Horizontal: 28.5" (w) x 7.125" (h) x 6.0625" (d)

Q
Base - Do you have the dimensions of the base if I put this horizontal on my mantle below the TV?
[ JOHN  Apr 14, 2022 ]
2 answers
A
I am starting from the bottom of the gold surface mounts to the top of the centerpiece that the speaker attacks to. Its Height is 3in5/8 or 3in3/4. Sorry, but that's all the info I can give cause I have horizontal mines mounted on the wall without the base.
[ PAUL  Apr 14, 2022 ]
A
The base is 9 in wide, 6 in deep and about 4 inches high. With the speaker mounted it's going to stand about 7 inches high.
[ CHRIS  Apr 14, 2022 ]
Q
Can I buy three of these and use them as Left, right and center?
[ SYED FIDA  Dec 02, 2020 ]

A
I had this set up originally and it was fantastic! But a tip, I replace the center Channel with the 504c. That is a world of difference if you have the room for it!
[ CHRIS  Apr 14, 2022 ]
A
Yes
[ MICHAEL  Dec 02, 2020 ]
A
Absolutely. They are designed for it. The Klipsch logo even rotates 90 degrees depending on speaker orientation. I have three of these and I'm very impressed. They are paired with a Klispch 12 inch sub.
[ BENJAMIN  Dec 02, 2020 ]
A
It would probably be okay for TV in a small room, but I think you would want a little more oomph from you mains for music and movies.
[ Jesse  Dec 02, 2020 ]
Q
Would rp640d work well as a center with rp 8000f for left and right fronts?
[ DOBE  Jun 06, 2020 ]
8 answers
A
Hi Dobe, the Klipsch RP-640D speaker can be utilized as a center channel, along side of the RP-8000F floor standing speakers. The size of the RP-640D speaker does come in handy if you are working with limited space.
[ JESSICA  Jun 19, 2020 ]  Staff
A
Hi, I'm using the RP-640D as a center channel with a pair of RP-280F (previous version of RP-8000f) in a 5.2 configuration. The setup sounds great! I hope this helps.
[ David  Jun 14, 2020 ]
A
It will work, I'm using because of space issues, definitely miss my larger center channel that won't fit anymore.
[ Kurt  Jun 14, 2020 ]
A
Yes. The 640 is an outstanding center. I mounted mine directly to the bottom of the TV using a bracket. That way, when I telescope the TV out from the wall for better viewing, the speaker moves with it.
[ STEVEN  Jun 10, 2020 ]
A
I think that they would really work well together . I would have used the rp 8000f for left and right fronts but I didn't have any floor space available. The rp240 I sent back because it just didn't have enough voice projection and range coverage.
[ GREG  Jun 10, 2020 ]
A
Not familiar with 8000f. I use the 640d for my left, right and center. Also have the 440d for my 2 surround with 2 jl 13" subs. Amazing sound even in a large space 25 x 25. They also look great on the wall being very streamlined. I would contact klipsch for advice to make sure they are paired together as the crossovers may not give you the best output.
[ Richard  Jun 10, 2020 ]
A
I didn't use this on site here - it was shipped to an end customer. Contact Will at Crutchfield - he's very knowledgeable about all products.
[ CHANNEL  Jun 10, 2020 ]

I use this as a center channel with klipsch RF 7iii's.
[ Jesse  Jun 10, 2020 ]
Q
What would you recommend for a Denion 7.1 rec to go with these speakers?
[ Kevin  Apr 28, 2020 ]
1 answer
A
I recommend this for any center speaker system. I hang mine directly below the TV on a bracket.
[ STEVEN  Apr 29, 2020 ]
Q
Will the RP-640D On-Wall Speaker work well alone until sub, surrounds are added later?
[ Sterling  Feb 24, 2019 ]
6 answers
A
Obviously, doesn't have the deep, pounding bass due to the slim design, but I think they sound good w/o sub-woofer. IMHO a sub-woofer is always mandatory.
[ Daniel  Feb 26, 2019 ]
A
In my opinion, yes. It is still powerful enough to give you impressive sound. Although it will only act like a sound bar since it is only by itself. Having subs and surrounds of course completes the whole theater system effect that gives you varrying levels of sound.
[ Duke  Feb 25, 2019 ]
A
They will work great until you add sub and surrounds. Really great speakers.
[ Bryan  Feb 24, 2019 ]
A
Yes As long as its connected to an amp
[ Hussein Sami  Feb 24, 2019 ]
A
This speaker has great bass performance so you will get good lows but obviously nothing like a sub will do. Assuming you would be using this as a center channel which is how I am using this speaker.
[ Melissa  Feb 24, 2019 ]
A
You won't get tons of love and out of these but I think as a temporary solution it will be fine. I was really very pleasant is priced with the quality of the speakers.
[ Jacob B.  Feb 24, 2019 ]
Q
What is the intended purpose of the "self-adhesive pads"? I see no reference in the owner's manual.
[ STEPHEN  Jan 18, 2019 ]
3 answers
A
Consider it more as thick self-adhesive tape rather than a pad. Once you route your cable you use the self-adhesive tape to keep your cable flush to the back of the speaker. It is needed more for if you are running th speaker vertical vs. horizontal. Hope this helps.
[ Bryan  Jan 19, 2019 ]
A
They could be used to go on the bottom of the stand that comes with it. On a side note - I purchased a hanging solution that mounts the speaker below the tv. It uses the existing mounting screws for wall mount on the back of the tv. Clean look and you don't have to drill any holes into your wall.
[ JOSEPH  Jan 19, 2019 ]
A
In the manual it mentions using them to cover the wire track on the back of the speaker, to keep the wire inside the indented path, so it stay flush when you wall mount.
[ Michael  Jan 18, 2019 ]
Q
Any advantage over the G-28?
[ Tim  Dec 08, 2018 ]
3 answers
A
I can second the powerful comment. I use this as my center channel speaker and it does a great job paired with my Ref Premiere 260F's and in-ceiling Ref Premiere 180-RPC. Depending on what you're trying to use it for, you would want it to compliment the other speakers pushing sound. I also don't have any experience with the G-28.
[ JOSEPH  Jan 19, 2019 ]
A
couldn't really tell because I have never used the G-28 although the Klipsch RP-640D is a powerful speaker! I was amazed on its performance. Another thing though that I like about it compared to the G-28 is its outer finish, it looks really modern and I like the fact that my fingerprints don't stay on it unlike the G-28's finish which is high gloss that you have to constantly wipe with microfiber cleaning cloth to avoid scratches.
[ Duke  Dec 11, 2018 ]
A
It was February of this year when I bought the RP-640d's, and at the time the Crutchfield rep I spoke to and I both agreed the RP-640D would be a better match for what I was trying to accomplish. I use my home entertainment system more for audio than theater (especially vinyl). We both thought he RP-640D would be a better fit. Hope this helps.
