Overview

Our take on the Klipsch Reference RSB-8

The Klipsch Reference RSB-8 sound bar delivers the same exciting, immediate soundstage as it's sibling, the RSB-6 — but this one has some extra tricks up its sleeve. I raved about how Klipsch's built-in drivers and wireless subwoofer "turned our sprawling, sound-swallowing vendor training room into a lively, intimate space." By adding a versatile wireless sound technology called DTS Play-Fi, this system is capable of delivering an even more riveting experience.

Full wireless surround sound

Using DTS Play-Fi (also called Klipsch Stream), you can turn this bar/sub combo into a full wireless 5.1 surround system. The bar acts as the front speakers. A pair of Play-Fi speakers can be placed behind you and used as wireless surround speakers.

I've watched a movie using Play-Fi's surround feature, and it sounded as smooth and reliable as a wired system. No hiccups or delays through the entire flick.

Control music in every room

Play-Fi also lets you play music wirelessly on this sound bar, and other Play-Fi speakers throughout your home. It all starts by downloading the Klipsch Stream mobile app — free for both Apple® and Android™ devices.

The app gives you access to your music downloads — including high-quality lossless files. You can also dial up songs from music services like Spotify®, Pandora®, and SiriusXM, plus over 37,000 internet radio stations. You can send the same song to other Play-Fi devices or play a different song in every room. You can even mix and match Play-Fi devices from different brands.

Great product at a great price and the Crutchfield support is awesome. The ONE drawback of this product is that it doesn't sync directly with other devices. You must use the Klipsch app which is clumsy and dies not appear to be well supported. I would probably go with Sonos next time.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i bought this as a primary system for tv and to clarify center channel/dialogue when using my (stereo) receiver for high-volume movies. using it with ARC and with CEC enabled has rendered both completely seamless. and on its own, it's really enough for anything i really need to watch. i'm a fan of klipsch sound in general, and this soundbar doesn't disappoint, even when compared to products with better on-paper specs. love it.

    Great Sound. Useless Remote

Bill from Santa Clarita, CA on 9/9/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for our bedroom - the dialogue enhancement and night mode dynamic range reduction were desireable, and as a Klipsch product I had pretty high expectations. The sound bar and subwoofer are a substantial improvement over the stock speakers in the TV - no question about that. For the sale price, I'm completely satisfied with the sound. It is a little disappointing, though, that you can't use the dynamic range reduction and the dialogue enhancement at the same time; that would be particularly useful for late night viewing in bed. What I don't like is the remote. It's poorly designed, difficult to use, and generally frustrating because you can't really use the unit without it. This is exascerbated by the fact unbelievably clumsy way the batteries are changed and that it's difficult to substitute universal remote or one of the other remotes. It's so bad that I am considering returning the bar just because of the level of annoyance the remote generates.

Pros: Good value for the money Sounds good

Cons: The remote is beyond awful.

    Great sound, bad connectivity

Tom from Saugerties, New York on 9/4/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, the sound is great. I had no problems with the HDMI ARC connections - it just worked. However, the WIFI connection dropped out every 10 minutes or so. I tried their app on two different Galaxy S4's, an S5 an Apple X and a Kindle Fire - its terrible on all devices. The connection dropped out every 5 to 10 minutes. The blue tooth connection worked perfectly. Support just suggested a factory reset and try again but the connection continued to drop. Anyways, I don't see rebooting or factory resetting as a long term remedy. At this point in time, wireless connectivity should just work. I'm sending mine back.

    Pros: Sound, Bluetooth, size.

    Cons: WIFI connectivity.

    Power up issues

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When the unit powers up properly it sounds good, but I usually have to plug and unplug the unit to have it power up and recognize a source. The ARC sometimes work, but yeh hint does not power up when you turn the TV or even when you use the unit's remote. Most of the time if does not recognize the ARC even when it powers up. Opened a ticket with the manufacturer but they said they will get to me in 7 business days. It is a joke, no support. By the way, there is a thread on their forum with users having a similar issue and they never posted a solution.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice soundbar, but VERY temperamental. Setting it up was very frustrating, to say the least, seemed to finally work on its own after a day for some strange reason. I haven't even attempted to set up and use the App over Bluetooth, but that's not why I bought it. I was a little worried about this after reading some of the reviews and the problems some people have had. I live in a 1-bedroom apartment and was looking for a soundbar with great sound that wouldn't upset the neighbors. After using it for a week I am very happy with it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the soundbar to be a part of the whole house sound system that can be accomplished with Play FI. The sound bar works great. We are getting great sound from the speakers and subwoofer. I did have and issue with getting it to connect to my wifi router. I had to go direct into the soundbar initial wifi and bring up the page in my browser to put the ssid and password. Once in, it connected no problem. I also have a Polk S2R in another room and tie all of the speakers together with Play-FI thru wifi. I connect my music, Pandora, etc... via Play-Fi. This system I created works great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The soundbar delivers high quality sound and the wireless subwoofer works well. Not a remarkable upgrade to the TV speakers until you crank the volume a little and watch programs that make full use of the subwoofer. Then you can really appreciate the difference. Have not used extended features but I am happy with the purchase. If this is your first soundbar set up, be prepared to call Crutchfield to guide you through installations because the manual is almost useless. As usual, the technical support was patient and helpful. In particular, the manual indicated a button on the sub that does not exist - had to use a paper clip which seems stupid but it worked.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is nice, I am pleased with it for watching TV and streaming music. The remote and iPhone app could use some improvements. I would have expected the app to be able to entirely take place of the remote, but that isn't the case. Setup was easy, except the instructions mentioned pushing a button on the sub to pair it with the sound bar, but I could not find the button. So I skipped that step and it turns out the sub must have already been paired with the sound bar because it works.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had reached the point that I had difficulty hearing dialogue through my existing stereo speaker system. The dialogue was being drowned out by the background noise. I had heard of Crutchfield before, but had never purchased anything from them. I called for sales support and worked with Kevin to weigh the pros and cons of approximately three systems that Kevin felt were good fits based on my needs. What a contrast to the big box stores, who just tried to sell up! This sytem has been great. Outstanding clarity, crisp dialogue, easy to program. Crutchfield after sales support was great on my only phone call regarding programming my Direct TV remote. My next electronic s purchase will come from Crutchfield.

Great sound, but a poor remote controller

Robert from Venice, FL on 6/12/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation went smoothly, but the remote controller is difficult to use. It uses simple button switches to control volume and other functions, which at times are unresponsive. I installed a new battery, which helped, but still revealed the weakness of this system.

Klipsch Reference RSB-8: Great sound quality

Robin from Fairfax, VA on 5/15/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound quality. I have not used some of the "extended" features such as direct link to my phone or Play-Fi, but that's not what I bought it for. One minor note: I think the sub-woofer and sound bar were already paired out of the box, but since the instructions provided pairing instructions I decided to go ahead and un-pair and pair them anyway. The instructions indicated there was a button to push, but I had a tough time finding the button! There is a hole in the back where the button should have been. Taking a chance, I inserted a paper clip, and rather than destroy the subwoofer as I feared that might do, that did indeed depress a button that placed it in pairing mode.

    Pros: Sound

    Cons: High price

    Very nice

Scott from Chicago, IL on 2/3/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Now I am happy. Originally bought the 10B and it worked fine for 2 weeks but then the Bluetooth just stopped working. Called Crutchfield tech support and they offered to send me a new one, but I saw the limitation of the 10B soundbar is the it does not support Wi-fi so I couldn't use it with other Klipsch speakers down the road. So I bought a scratched R8. The package arrived 2 days later but when I set it up, none of my phones or iPad could "see" the R8. So Crutchfield sent out a brand new R8 soundbar. 10 minutes after unpacking it I was streaming from my iPhone. While the R8 is a bit smaller than the 10B, I think the sound is richer. The remote is much more functional than the one which came with the 10B. I like the enhanced dialogue feature on the R8 for TV and movies. Very pleased with the soundbar and Crutchfield. One minor annoyance which others have commented on--every once in a while the Bluetooth connection falls off for a few seconds, then comes back full.

Pros: Small footprint Easy set-up Full sound Full featured remote

Cons: Bluetooth sometimes fades in and out

    Excellent product

Ben from Lakeville, MN on 1/22/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted a sound bar with a good balance of quality/quantity of sound. Use for great room TV, but have theater setup in basement. Sound quality is very good; sharp and clear, especially highs. Bass is good, but not excessive, which I did not want (can control sub volume). Will not shake the room if that is desired. Dialog enhancement feature is nice, but even without it the sound bar brings our dialog more than the TV. Surround mode does not really reproduce true "surround", but again much better than TV speakers. As for power/watts, 100W is sufficient for my needs. This soundbar sounds better the louder it is played. Does not distort when turned up. Will create a good movie experience, but of course no substitute for true surround speakers. As for music, Pandora streamed through the TV or Play Fi app sounds crisp and clear. Plenty of volume to fill our large room, although we usually use or in-ceiling speakers, so did not really buy this for music. Play Fi app is easy to use, very convenient, can synch with other speaker brands that use Play Fi also. Overall a very solid product. Greatest strength is clear quality of sound. I thought about the RSB-14, but was a little much and did not need the extra watts and larger sub. If one does not want the Play Fi feature, might consider paying a little more for the RSB-11 with more watts/bass or a little less for RSB-6 for fewer watts and same bass.

    Pros: Sound quality

    Cons: A little pricey

    Surround Sound

Soundbar w/ Tractrix Horn Technology: The Klipsch RSB-8's soundbar speaker is equipped with two 0.75" horn-loaded textile dome tweeters with 90° x 90° Tractrix horns that deliver crisp highs, plus dual 2.5" fiber composite woofers for dynamic midrange and enhanced vocals. By incorporating highly efficient horn-loaded technology into the soundbar, all sounds are more detailed, dialog clarity is significantly improved, and overall output is maximized to cover even the largest listening areas. The tweeters and woofers are bi-amplified and utilize a DSP-controlled crossover network.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The Klipsch RSB-8 includes a wireless powered subwoofer with a 6.5" down-firing fiber composite woofer in a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing slot-port. The powered sub delivers deep, punchy bass to your movie and music soundtracks. The sophisticated 2.4 GHz technology automatically connects the soundbar and subwoofer together wirelessly; up to 50'. The wireless powered sub's cabinet features a black wood-grain vinyl finish and rubber feet. The wireless powered subwoofer has independent volume control from the included IR remote control.

Dolby Audio Decoder: The Klipsch RSB-8 incorporates Dolby Audio for rich, clear, powerful sound. Its built-in Dolby Audio decoder allows the Klipsch soundbar system to automatically reproduce detailed, high-output sound in almost any size room no matter what format of sound (including Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2ch PCM) is coming from your TV's or Blu-ray player's output.

Sound Modes: The Klipsch RSB-8 soundbar & subwoofer system offers 3 sound modes to choose from - Virtual Surround, Voice Enhance, and Night. The Virtual Surround mode is designed to simulate the effect of a surround sound system. The Voice Enhance mode increases dialogue volume for enhanced vocal clarity without increasing ambient sounds. Night mode adjusts the system's dynamic range for quieter listening environments.

HDMI 2.0: The Klipsch RSB-8's soundbar is outfitted with a HDMI 2.0 input and HDMI 2.0 ARC output. The system's HDMI connectivity supports 4K pass-through and is HDCP 2.2 compliant.

    • 4K Video Pass-Through: The RSB-8 lets you maintain 4K quality from source to screen by allowing 4K video to "pass-through" and be displayed on a 4K TV or projector, without compromising image quality. Giving you the pure 4K experience makes this system the perfect partner for 4K-capable TVs and Ultra-HD Blu-ray players. 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video signal are also supported (there is no upscaling).
    • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by the system's HDMI input and output. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with Ultra HD Blu-ray players, 4K Satellite/Cable providers, and 4k online video services.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the system's HDMI output allows audio to be sent from your ARC compatible TV to the soundbar system through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your TV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
Note: The soundbar's HDMI input does not support HDR (High Dynamic Range) video

Digital & Analog Inputs: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the Klipsch RSB-8 offers an optical (toslink) digital input and a stereo minijack (3.5mm) analog input. Using the digital optical connection, the soundbar accepts sound from both the TV and any device (such as a DVD/Blu-ray player or Cable/Satellite receiver) hooked up to the TV. The system supports Dolby Digital & 2ch PCM audio through its optical digital input.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of many newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, HDMI inputs, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via stereo RCA or minijack.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Klipsch RSB-8 features built-in Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming of stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows PC/Phone, Mac computer/laptop, and more to the Klipsch soundbar & subwoofer system. From the system's remote control you can operate basic playback functions like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track. You'll continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to control advanced music playback functions and to view song/artist information. A simple single button press will pair your device with the RSB-8 system. Once paired, the RSB-8 speaker system will automatically re-connect to your device when within range (up to 33').

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Klipsch RSB-8.

Optional Wireless Rear Speakers: Via a Firmware update, you can use Klipsch's RW-1 Play-Fi speakers (714RW1, sold separately) as wireless rear speakers fro the RSB-8 soundbar speaker system.

Remote Control: The RSB-8 comes with a credit-card size IR remote control for wireless operation of the soundbar & subwoofer system. The remote also operates basic playback functions like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track for Bluetooth-connected devices. You can also program the Klipsch RSB-8's Volume Up/Down and Mute functions into your existing TV remote for further ease-of-operation.

HDMI-CEC: HDMI-CEC allows you to easily manage and operate the RSB-8 system along with an HDMI-CEC compatible TV, Blu-ray player, satellite receiver, and/or cable box with a single remote; when all components are connected via HDMI.

Mounting Options: The soundbar speaker can simply be positioned on a shelf or stand, below or above your TV. It can also be wall-mounted using its dual keyhole slots and included template (mounting screws not included). Because the powered sub is wireless it can be positioned almost anywhere up to 50' from the soundbar speaker. It is recommended that the sub be positioned on the same wall as the soundbar.

Power Requirements: Both, the active soundbar & wireless powered sub will require AC power.

    Wireless Multiroom Audio

DTS Play-Fi Wireless Technology: Klipsch's RSB-8 soundbar speaker system employ DTS Play-Fi wireless technology for wireless sound that is reliable and high-quality. DTS Play-Fi combines DTS audio and WiFi wireless technology to wirelessly stream high-definition "lossless" audio with no impact on sound quality. DTS Play-Fi will stream pure, bit-for-bit, lossless audio, for uncompromised quality sound; up to 16-bit/48kHz. DTS Play-Fi has a range of up to 100' from your wireless router.

Note: All DTS Play-Fi enabled products work seamlessly together, so there's no hassle adding more speakers, or choosing more than one audio brand like Klipsch, Martin Logan, Definitive Technology, Polk Audio, Phorus, Wren, etc..) in your home.

Wireless Network Connection: The Klipsch RSB-8 soundbar speaker system uses your home's network for whole-house audio entertainment. The RSB-8 connects to your home's wireless network via WiFi (802.11 b/g/n; 2.4/5GHz); a dual-band "N" or better router is recommended for the most reliable wireless network connection.

Simple Setup: There are two methods for connecting the DTS Play-Fi soundbar speaker system to your home network. You can perform WiFi setup via the free DTS Play-Fi on your Apple iOS/Android mobile device or Windows PC (this setup allows you to connect multiple Play-Fi device at once to your network). You can also use the WPS button on the soundbar speaker if your wireless router supports WPS (this setup only allows you to connect one Play-Fi device at a time to your network).

Klipsch Stream App: Download the free Klipsch Stream App onto your Apple iOS (8.0+) device or Android (4.0+) smartphone/tablet for easy and convenient management of your music from your mobile device. From the app you can initially set up the RSB-8 soundbar speaker system, as well as add, link, and control all your DTS Play-Fi speakers. You'll be able stream music directly from the system's built-in music online services, or music on your mobile device or computer to multiple DTS Play-Fi enabled speakers through out your home. The app lets you browse your music by artist, album, genre, or title; and provides album art. You can choose to play the same music in each zone or a different song in each room.

Variety Of Sources: The RSB-8 soundbar speaker with DTS Play-Fi supports a variety of music sources.

    • Mobile Device (Apple iOS + Android): You are able to wirelessly stream stored music and music apps on your Apple iOS (8.0+) or Android (4.0+) device to the soundbar speaker system through the free Klipsch Stream App.
    • Online Music Services: From the Klipsch Stream App on your mobile device or computer, you can share and listen to Pandora, Spotify Connect, SiriusXM, TIDAL, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Napster, and Internet Radio. While the Klipsch Stream App is free, not all the online music services are (subscription & purchasing fees may apply).
    • Computer Audio: The RSB-8 soundbar is DLNA compliant for playback of various music files stored on your Windows PC (7/8) or DLNA-certified NAS drives connected to your home network. MAC OSX computers and laptops require third party software to be visible on the network (Twonky, Plex, Servio etc.) as they do not support DLNA. Use the DTS Play-Fi app on your mobile device or computer to access these music files.

Supported Music Files: The RSB-8 soundbar speaker & DTS Play-Fi support music formats such as MP3, AAC, FLAC, and WAV. The system will recognize music files up to 24-bit/192kHz and wirelessly stream these files at up to 16-bit/48kHz (CD quality sound). Some down-sampling may occur to ensure virtually lossless distribution throughout a home network.

Critical Listening Mode: For those who wish to hear high resolution audio as originally intended, Critical Listening mode will enable native rendering of high resolution files up to 24-bit/96kHz, with no down-sampling or network synchronization adjustment. In this way, audio files retain their original audio integrity. Critical Listening Mode is only available on one DTS Play-Fi speaker and not supported for multiroom audio distribution.

Multiroom Audio: You can play the same source in each zone or a different song in each room. Eight separate wireless source devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.), each with its own source, are supported simultaneously and any wireless source device can stream to eight DTS Play-Fi playback devices. Due to the bandwidth limitations of most wireless networks, no more than 16 wireless DTS Play-Fi products on a single WiFi network at one given time is recommended. Supported multiroom audio sources include -

    • Apple iOS & Android devices with the Klipsch Stream App installed.
    • Select DTS Play-Fi online music services and internet radio.
    • Music library from your Windows  PC or Mac computer.
Note: Bluetooth, HDMI, Optical digital, and Analog input sources are not supported for multiroom audio.

Alexa Compatible (future firmware update): The Klipsch Stream series of products will soon be able to support Amazon Alexa voice-commands allowing your to control your Klipsch Stream speakers, soundbars, and multiroom audio systems from any Alexa-enabled device, such as the Amazon Echo or Dot (sold separately). The Klipsch Stream series of products will require a free firmware update (available in 2018 - no exact ETA) through the Klipsch Stream app to enable functionality of Alexa voice control.

    Why did you buy this?

I bought this sound bar for a friend because I have because I have the exact same unit and I love it! I've been a Klipsch fan since the k-horn days in the '70s. [ Thomas  Nov 24, 2018 ]

Based on my "want list" description for a rich sounding sound bar/sub, this was recommended to me by Travis/Crutchfield rep. The fact that it was on sale was attractive, but wasn't the decision factor in making this purchase. I trusted Crutchfield's guidance. Perhaps it might make more sense to ask me this question after I receive and hook it up . . . just saying . . . [ Roseanna  Nov 18, 2018 ]

While the HDMI connectivity does support 4K video pass-thru and HDCP 2.2, it does not support any HDR metadata. So, you would need to connect any external HDR capable video sources directly to the TV and provide the audio back to the Klipsch via optical or HDMI ARC. sorry , it was a gift ... but , she loves the sound bar i am told ... [ Frederick  Oct 26, 2017 ]
No physical power button on either the soundbar or the sub. There is a "Night mode" setting on the remote that will disable the sub. [ Garrett  Oct 22, 2017 ]
The remote has a power on/off button. From most sources the sound bar will automatically turn on when it detects an audio signal and will automatically turn off after approximately 30 minutes of no audio signal. [ Joseph  Oct 19, 2017 ]
