About the Klipsch T5 II True Wireless ANC (McLaren Edition)
Noise-canceling earbuds with a premium Formula 1 look
This special edition of the Klipsch T5 II ANC sports a McLaren look and feel — including a carbon fiber lining on the case.
Noise-canceling earbuds with a premium Formula 1 look
This special edition of Klipsch's T5 II noise-canceling true wireless earbuds celebrates their partnership with the McLaren racing team. I recently took these premium, sweatproof earbuds for a test drive. Their streamlined design and striking color scheme were inspired by the Formula 1 powerhouse. They offer active noise cancellation for removing loud distractions, and the sound is pure Klipsch.
Music plays wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0, a strong, reliable version of Bluetooth. And powerful antennas in each earbud ensure a more stable connection for playing music or making calls with your phone. Plus, you can use both earbuds together or one at a time — I often popped the left one in so I could listen to a podcast in the morning while I prepared coffee and breakfast.
Before I even got to the T5 II ANC earbuds themselves, I found a lot of interesting things inside the packaging. There were Klipsch and McLaren stickers, a metal credit-card sized certificate of authenticity, and a neat little booklet that tells the stories of both companies. Thumbing through, it was easy to note the similarities: both have a rich history that helps inform their decisions. But they always keep an eye toward innovation and moving forward.
Easy, one-button controls and a mobile app for more
On each earbud there is a button to push for control over music, calls, and the level of noise cancellation. While touch controls have become the trend, I actually prefer Klipsch's approach. Since I can't see earbuds when I wear them, it makes it easy to know where to push — and I like having the clear, satisfying feedback when I click the button.
Clicking the left earbud button allows you to toggle between noise cancellation and Transparent mode. The latter uses the built-in mics to pick up external sounds and voices, so you can be better aware of your surroundings without removing the earbuds. You can download the free Klipsch Connect app for Apple® or Android™ and get further control over the level of noise you let in.
Newly designed drivers for clear, powerful sound
Klipsch and McClaren both work closely with "high-performance drivers," and that's certainly the case with the T5 II ANC. Under the hood, Klipsch uses a single 5.8mm driver in each earbud. They re-tooled their ultra-thin diaphragm so that it can move, start, and stop with piston-like speed. It's all to serve up Klipsch's famous dynamic sound — high on detail, low on distortion — with a nice helping of bass.
My listening impressions
I found the soundstage up-front and immediate, but well-layered. Even though I felt closer to the music than with some other headphones, there was still space between the different instruments and vocals. The bass is powerful and deep when it needs to be, but doesn't sound overbearing — it hit enough sweet spot for me.
That all worked well for all types of music, from the Foo Fighters to Vince Staples to Keith Jarrett playing solo piano. But these earbuds especially played into the strengths of singer-songwriter Yola's excellent new album Stand for Myself.
Her powerful, genre-defying vocals blend beautifully with the other instruments. It's the sheer will of her soulful emotion that lifts her gospel-infused twang above the groove. But the percussion, bass, and slide guitar all came through with a distinct bite — no soft edges, even in slower songs — that helped build the momentum throughout each track.
Klipsch's sound presentation helped accelerate the sense of urgency. And through these earbuds, I found it hard to not listen to the whole album front-to-back. I had to re-listen immediately.
Large collection of ear tips for patented comfort
Klipsch includes six different sizes of their patented oval ear tips with the T5 II ANC. These soft silicone earbud covers slide in easily to keep the earbuds stable and secure while you move.
I visited Klipsch's headphone lab a few years back, and I saw firsthand how much work and time they put into developing and engineering these oval tips. Their research goes back decades and the design is ever-improving. I find they avoid pressure points and create one of the best seals out there — crucial for noise cancellation and for getting solid bass response.
Super-durable charging case banks 21 hours of power
These earbuds offer up to five hours of battery life with noise cancellation and seven hours without. That's on par for true wireless earbuds. Plus, the case banks an extra 21 hours of power to recharge on the go.
It snaps open and closed in one hand like a thick Zippo lighter, and this version has some nice McLaren design touches. There's a tactile tire tread pattern lining its parimeter, and the front and back are covered in carbon fiber, all punctuated by the iconic yellow "papaya" racing stripe. When you need to recharge the case itself, just place in on the included wireless Qi charging pad.

They are also equipped with Dirac® HD sound to enhance the Klipsch signature sound, and Bragi® hands-free control for accepting phone calls and controlling music playback. The T5 II True Wireless ANC earphones come with 6-pairs of Klipsch's Comfort Fit oval ear tips, a compact charging case, and a dual-position wireless charging pad.
McLaren Edition: The T5 II True Wireless ANC McLaren Edition earphones are the collaboration of Klipsch and McLaren Racing, two companies that specialize in design quality and technical innovation. This special edition features McLaren's signature papaya-colored ear tips, as well as papaya accents and real carbon fiber on the charging case. One ear bud bears the Klipsch logo while the other ear bud has the McLaren logo. The top, bottom, and outer edges of the charging case are covered with a co-molded rubber tread that is patterned after the intermediate tread on the McLaren Formula One car tires. The earphones come with an exclusive metal "The Speed of Sound" membership card that includes the item's serial number and manufacturing date.
Drivers: The T5 II True Wireless ANC McLaren Edition earphones feature custom 5.8mm dynamic drivers for delivering the legendary Klipsch sound. This 2nd generation T5 driver is designed for high output and natural sound with deep bass extension. The drivers were engineered from the ground up to give you the most performance from the smallest form factor, and features an all new ultra-thin diaphragm for better clarity and improved audio quality.
Active Noise Cancelling (ANC): The earphones' state-of-the-art ANC technology utilizes a two-mic hybrid design to remove unwanted environmental noise. One microphone sits behind the driver and faces outside, while the second mic is positioned in front of the driver, in a feed-forward and feed-back configuration. Combined with the natural noise attenuation of the ear tips forming a seal inside your ear canal, the Active Noise Cancelling can provide up to -22dB of noise isolation.
Beam-forming Microphones: The earphones feature four beam-forming microphones that enhance the sound of your voice to make your phone calls loud and clear.
Transparency Mode: The earphones offer a Transparency Mode, which uses the built-in microphones to pick up sound around you and pass it through to your ears. This allows you to maintain awareness of your surroundings without having to remove the earbuds.
Ear Tips: The patented, oval-shaped Comfort Fit silicone ear tips fit the natural shape of the ear canal, ensuring a deeper fit and good seal for excellent noise isolation. The soft silicone tips are comfortable to wear, and help prevent ear fatigue during long listening sessions. Six pairs of ear tips are included to help you find the best fit. Sizes include Small, Small+, Medium, Medium+, Large, and Large+.
Dirac® HD Sound: The Klipsch T5 II True Wireless ANC earphones are the first model to have Dirac HD Sound for best-in-class digital audio performance. Using Dirac's sound-correcting algorithms, the earphones deliver a clear, more dynamic sound stage, crisp vocals, and clear, solid bass.
Bragi® Moves: The headphones feature Bragi AI technology to provide additional features not found in other True Wireless headphones. Bragi Moves is a gesture-based feature that lets you answer or decline incoming phone calls by simply nodding or shaking your head. You can also skip tracks by shaking your head during music playback. Other Bragi-enabled features include:
- Noise Shield: During Transparency Mode, Noise Shield protects your hearing by detecting and cancelling unexpected loud noises.
- Action Button: The button on the left ear bud can be configured (in the Klipsch Connect app) to perform certain functions.
- Sidekicks: Enables smart actions, such as turning on Transparency Mode when a call comes in.
- Equalizer: You can tune the earphones to your personal preferences with 6 EQ presets and a custom EQ (found in the Klipsch Connect app).
- Voice Awareness: While on a phone call, Voice Awareness lets you hear your own voice in a natural way.
Bluetooth 5.0: The earphones feature Bluetooth 5.0, with a range of up to approximately 33 feet (10 meters). A signal-boost external antenna helps to provide a solid connection to your device for fewer dropouts. Bluetooth profiles include A2DP 1.3, AVRCP 1.6, HSP 1.2, and HFP 1.7. The headphones include SBC and AAC codecs for high-fidelity audio streaming.
Voice Assistant Compatible: The earphones can easily connect to your favorite phone-based digital assistant. Pressing the right ear bud for one second will immediately connect to Siri (iPhone/iPad), Google Assistant (Android), or Cortana (Microsoft).
On Board Controls: Control of the T5 II True Wireless ANC McLaren Edition has controls on the outside of each ear bud for music playback and phone calls. There are controls for the left and right ear buds when they are worn together, or individually as a single earphone. Long and short presses, long presses, and double presses are used to adjust the volume up or down, music playback (play/pause, skip forward, skip backward), phone calls (answer call, end call, mute microphone), and activating the voice assistant (Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana). Fewer functions can be controlled when using only one earbud.
Battery: Each T5 II True Wireless ANC ear bud is powered by a 50mAh rechargeable battery. The ear buds are charged when placed inside the supplied Charging Case, which has a 350mAh Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. The case's battery can be wirelessly charged by placing it on top of a wireless charging pad. It can also be charged via with the supplied USB-C charging cable, plugged into the USB-C port inside the case (5.0V, 1.0A). If the charging device does not have a USB-C port, the included USB-C to USB-A adapter can be used. The earphones, when fully charged, provide up to 7 hours of battery life (5 hours with ANC). The case's battery provides enough reserve power for three full charges, or 21 additional hours (15 with ANC). When the T5 II True Wireless ANC is paired with an iOS or Android device, the battery status is visible on the device's screen.
Wireless Charging Pad: A Qi-compatible wireless charging pad is included with the T5 II True Wireless ANC McLaren Edition earphones. The pad has two charging positions, one for the earphones' charging case, and one for your smartphone or other device. Two LEDs on the top of the pad indicate the charging status: Solid: Charging; Slow Blink: Low Power; Fast Blink: Improper alignment. A minimum power adapter of 15W (5V 3A) is required for charging.
Klipsch Connect App: The Klipsch Connect App is designed to provide even more performance and potential for the T5 II True Wireless ANC earphones. With the app, you can adjust the sound of your music with six preset EQ settings (flat, treble, vocal, podcast, bass, and rock). You can also set and save a custom EQ curve along 6 bands (60Hz, 150Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, and 15kHz). The battery status is available at a glance on the app, as well. To keep your earphones working in top shape, any firmware updates are delivered through the app. Klipsch Connect is available on the Apple App Store for iOS devices running version 12.4 or later, and from Google Play for devices with Android version 7.0 and up.
