Excellent Speakers with full range of sound and crispness

Crutchfield customer from Piney Flats, TN on 9/18/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed these on our covered patio, about 250 sq ft and they are perfect. At half volume powered off my Onkyo RZ-630 they are pleasantly loud enough. At 3/4 volume I can hear their crisp sound and the bass radiators provide a pleasant low on all songs throughout our back yard. If I wanted to piss off my neighbors, these can do the trick at nearly full volume with little to no distortion. I would definitely recommend these.

I installed two of these speakers in my back patio and in about three weeks blew out both of the tweeters. My whole system in my house is difinative speakers which I brag about all the time and very proud of. I did not purchase the cheap ones. I was super excited to get these outdoor speakers of the same brand as my indoor speakers. They are not cheap and I was very disappointed after talking to definitive customer service thinking they were going to send me new speakers which I did not want they sent me to new tweeters which I had to have installed myself. I take my sound very seriously and entertain often I was very embarrassed and disappointed That I blew out my speakers in less than a month And then hugely disappointed again to have the customer service just send me two tweeters without any directions or advice on how to disassemble and install the parts they sent me And this is after I told them I did not want those speakers I had already purchased new ones which are electro voice and running them off the same receiver and I have had Them maxed out and They did not miss a beat.

Pros: None

Cons: Very in adequate product and horrible customer service

I have had these speakers for about 5 years in an all weather environment. Recently I blew out the left channel and had to purchase a replacement. System is as good as new. Love these speakers and fill up the yard with great sound.

Pros: Great sound. Durable speakers well worth the money.

Cons: None.

These are great. Efficient. Wide dynamic range. Great treble and bass. Especially bass. Sound is amazing. Have them mounted horizontally. Had big issues at first. Rattled like crazy. Bracket was shaking against wall. I went to the hardware store and bought 3m double sided tape and white silicon weatherstripping. Surrounded perimeter with foam tape and then taped on the weatherstripping. Then installed using screw locations as supplied with bracket. Cured it. Went from rattling to amazing! They have so much bass they shake too much otherwise. Get them and install this way. Speakers are amazing!

Pros: Amazing sound.

Cons: Shake too much for mounts as designed. But fix is 10 bucks and easy.

Over Rated

Pros: Sound Great At First

Cons: Over time these speakers are garbage. I love my indoor DT home theater speakers. But I have had these speakers for about 3 or so years and have had to fix them every year. I am on my 3rd year and again one of the speakers do not work. First year the speaker terminal broke off due to ice but is safely under a wide over hang. 2nd year the driver did not work. Definitely was not tested for harsh New York winters.... Maybe they would fair better in Florida....

Nice Speakers

Replaced my one of a kind Klipsch and am still trialing, but the sound is very clear, bottom is robust. I like to crank it up outside, and these fill up my deck and backyard listening area very well. I give them a high rating because of the sound clarity playing hi-res files.

Pros: Attractive speaker that sounds quite good at all listening levels.

Cons: I used to refer to my Klipsch outdoor speaker as really "cracking"(in a good way) at loud volume. Haven't quite heard that yet, but still very new installation.

I cannot believe the sound that comes out of these speakers. Unbelievable! I have a 50x50 shop and was worried that 2 of these were not going to be loud enough. Boy was I wrong! They are still within their break-in period, so they will only sound better then they already do! Highly recommend to anyone who needs a speaker for outdoors and other high moisture areas!

Finding it nearly impossible to audition multiple outdoor speakers in person, I had to make my choice based on my AV installer's recommendations along with internet reviews. For me clarity, depth, and spacial perception were more important than pure power. I prefer to play light jazz while grilling out on the Big Green Egg on my patio! I considered the Klipsch Reference AW-650 speakers but ultimately went for the DTs. They sound amazing on my covered patio and look fantastic. A word of caution, though. The black finish appears pitted likely due to the paint not bonding perfectly well with the metal. DT says this is their "new" finish. I purchased the AW6500s in white which actually are a much better match for my white stucco/gray wood trim patio. The paint finish on the white speakers looks really, really good. Don't worry about power with this pair. If you want all the neighbors to think you have a live band providing your party entertainment, just crank up the volume and you won't be disappointed (until the police show up!). Overall, very happy with the Definitive Technology AW6500s and Crutchfield is still my #1 go-to for all home electronics.

Do not purchase if installing on the side of your house without cover.

Pros: Good sound when new. However, see cons.

Cons: These speakers slowly started getting quieter. Two years in they both stopped working at different times. I decided to open one up and found a bunch of water pour out. the padding inside was completely soaked and the speaker cone and magnet were rusted no allowing the speaker to move freely. We live in VA and do not get an enormous amount of rain. More than disappointed.

just added a pair of AW6500's to my pool area and am extremely pleased. They sound great at both low and high volume and boy can they crank out the sound. I'm running them off a Sonos Connect via my Yamaha AV receiver and sending them 90 watts each in stereo. This seems to be a sweet spot. I installed them under the eaves along the rear of the house horizontally which gives the passive woofer a chance to shine -- really great base for a 6 1/2" speaker. I am very pleased with how well they sound 75 feet away from the house.

Pros: very clean highs remarkable amount of base excellent imaging

Prior to this purchase I wasn't familiar withDefinitive Technology, so I was reluctant to go with them instead of a Bose or similar "name brand". However, the reviews convinced me otherwise, so I took a chance. When I first turned them on, quite frankly, I was a little disappointed. The midrange frequencies were somewhat muddled, but I figured what the heck, we're outside in the great outdoors so what can you expect. The documentation that came with the speakers indicated that there was a "break in" period before the speakers would sound their best. I was like, yeah right. However, after listening to them now for over a month, I must admit that they do sound better than they did right out of the box. Highly recommend them.

I did have these for about 6 years. Sounds decent but when you turn them up the bass vibrates the whole speaker. But my main problem was they leak water. Sent one back to company and they sent me back a refurbished one and it leaked again and eventually stopped working. Not a good speaker for outside. Going to try the Klipsch speakers. They have a lifetime warranty so that should tell you something about there product

Pros: Sounds good

Cons: Bad speaker for outside

Sounded amazing initially. I bought 4 of these 2 years ago. I just plugged them in and one of the speakers is dead. I opened the case and the inside was a mess. Corrosion over the wires and board. Tested for current which goes into the board but dead on the output side. Contacted customer service and no response. One of the last 3 is also failing. The woofer doesn't work only tweeter. Tested all wires and connections. I am very disappointed since Def Tech is usually a quality product. I have all def tech for my surround system. I am off to buy Bose.

Set up my pool patio with a pair of DT AW6500 and a pair of Klipsch AW650. The Dts reproduce base ok, but not without significant shattering of the enclosures even at moderate levels. Happens to both of them, so most likely a design flaw. The Klipsch speakers have no problem there. [Pachelbel Chacconne in F minor]. Klipsch hands down. No comparison.

Cons: don't handle bass well.

Great for covered patio for music and surround

TJ from Hermitage, PA on 3/11/2018

I have a 25ftW x 36ft L covered patio with a TV above the fireplace. I bought 5 of these to use for surround sound with the TV and music. The first night my brother-in-law came over, he liked them so much, he was outside until 5am listening to a variety of music. He mentioned that there were subtle tones and sounds in his favorite songs that he had never noticed before. He was impressed by the clear and clean sound. The bass is very good, especially considering the size of the speaker. But since I am using them for TV and movies, I am going to add a powered sub. I've had these about a year now and have had no problems thus far. The only precaution I've taken is to not play them very loud when it is really cold out.

Pros: Sound is very clean and excellent frequency range for this size speaker

Cons: I bought these when they cost $50 more per speaker, but still worth it at that price.

Not sure why anyone complains about this speaker being too large. Can't imagine a more compact speaker with a 6 1/2" driver. Bass is very good, but do not expect it to match a 10" active driver. The definition and clairity of the highs and mids are amazing. Very happy, and sitting out in 20 degree weather just to hear these speakers.

Pros: High quality sound for the outdoors.

Cons: I did not buy them sooner.

These speakers ROCK! I had no clue about Definitive Technology prior to my purchase (~ 1.5 yrs ago) however after checking the specs and looking at reviews I decided to take the plunge... these speakers were so impressive that I will definitely have to look into other products made by DT. The speakers are able to provide complete sound for my backyard (about the size of a two basketball courts). The bass that comes out of these things is pretty amazing given their size, however if you're looking for some serious rap concert thump I would look into getting a dedicated sub. The clarity is noteworthy and the volumes the speakers attain without distortion is outstanding. I was expecting to buy a lot more speakers in order to fill the backyard's sound however two speakers do more than fine (you can hear them from several houses over). The only downside to these speakers (which may not actually be a fault of the manufacturer) is the fact that I tend to get birds nesting on the speakers (a quick google search can provide solutions, the details of are out of the scope of this review). Overall I would highly recommend these for price, quality and performance.

Pros: Clarity, bass, sound output, build quality

Cons: Keeping them bird nest free, having to tighten the mounting screws by hand every month or so because the bass shakes them loose causing the direction of fire to change slightly

Best Outdoor Speaker

I have owned many outdoor speakers throughout my life we have a pool and a dedicated system for the outdoors inside a pool house and these speakers are mounted on the outside of the building. Brands I have owned Bose, Polk Audio and some other brand years ago that I can't remember. These are by far the best I have ever had. Great clear sound bass is supplemented with a powered subwoofer but these speakers out perform any other. For the money they are definitely worth it. This was a replacement for one that had gone bad after being used since 2010 the other 2010 year speaker is still going strong. Can't go wrong with these speakers, made in the US and they are quality built. You get what you pay for in quality electronics but these are reasonably priced.

Pros: Awesome clarity and loudness, great quality and durable.

These speakers are exactly as described. Great sound straight out of the box and relatively easy to install. The rear firing woofer adds a level of depth that I haven't experienced from outdoor speakers. Very happy with the purchase and the Crutchfield service.

Pros: Sound, depth of field, sensitivity, build quality

Cons: Size - the size of these speakers feels a bit like 1997. For the sound quality, maybe it is to be expected and I'm not deducting a star for it. I would like to see Def Tech evolve the size of these speakers while maintaining the sound.

Was going to use a different retailer but wanted to check another company. Glad I did, spoke to Norm and he was great. I have a beach house with 3 decks and wanted whole house system. He recommended these speakers, I wanted the Bose, they sound fantastic. For an outside speaker, I was impressed with the bass and overall range. Loud and clear with good depth. Thanks Norm.

Pros: Good look great sound and bass for an outdoor speaker

Cons: For this price should have stainless steel mounting hardware. It comes with none.

Replacing 15+ year old Bose Outdoor speakers and amp. After a lot of research I installed (2) AW6500 on my upper deck powered by a Sonos. The sound blew me away on the deck and down by the lake 100+ feet away. Excited to add the 2nd set of speakers on the lower patio!

Pros: Great Sound and Easily Installed

Cons: Slightly larger than ideal per my wife.

Great sounding outdoor speaker. Easy to install. Seems like a very high quality component. I installed a pair of these in my pool area and a pair of the AW5500's on my patio and I must say the sound is awesome! Each pair delivers excellent bass, don't bother with a sub unless you are searching for absolute audio perfection. Both pairs of speakers are driven by a single Denon Heos amp.

Pros: Awesome sound, very good bass, high quality products.

Cons: A bit pricey but you get what you paid for.

I have 5 of these wall mounted in a covered patio (25' x 36'). The bass radiator is aimed toward the wall and does add quite a bit to the low end compared to other outdoor speakers I have heard. Even with this simple 5 speaker surround setup, movies and TV sound great. These have a wide sound dispersion as well, which is a bonus for outdoor speakers.

Pros: Better bass than most outdoor speakers, wide sound dispersion

Cons: Fairly large speaker, but improved bass makes it worth it.

Very clear, powerful & stronger bass than I expected

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Very clear and powerful. Better than I had expected. Mounted them on the ceiling of my back porch near the wall. The woofers are on the wall side, reflecting low frequencies out (as advised in install instructions. With midrange and tweeters facing outward. I am driving them with a 130W per channel amp. If I crank it up my neighbors 5 houses down will hear it clearly. So while overkill at lower levels it sounds very clear, with more bass than I expected from a small speaker

Pros: Easy mounting, very powerful

Cons: The box they came in only had foam on the ends. One of the speakers box had a huge hole gashed in the side when I received it. Luckily it didn't damage the speaker, it just missed. I think their packaging needs more protection on the sides.

Disappointing bass response

DJ from South Bend, IN on 5/9/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bought these Definitive 6500s for my new deck based on the excellent reviews for their sound quality. They DO sound very clear and accurate in the mid and high frequencies, however the bass response is much less than I expected for drivers of this size, especially with the passive radiator firing right into the roof soffit. I've tried everything from hip hop to rock and country from CD and vinyl (not just some 128k MP3s) and they are consistently weak on the low end even with significant EQ. I'm a DJ, and I'm used to professional speakers, so my expectations might be too high, but a speaker at this price point should have better bass than a boombox IMO. I also hoped the grills (or the Definitive logo) would be flippable to the top or bottom of the speaker. I mounted the tweeter ends of both speakers in mirror image to give the best stereo separation, but now the logo is at the top of one speaker and the bottom of the other. Minor detail, but again at this price point, that should be a given. Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase and this does seem to be the best speaker on the market for the average homeowner. It's great for casual listening. For parties, I'll just bring out a couple RCF HD32a's and give the little Definitives a rest, lol!

Pros: Great warranty, solid build quality, attractive look

Cons: Weak bass, grills not reversible

I decided to spend the extra money and get the 6500s over the 5500s thinking the little extra frequency and sensitivity and bigger woofer would be worth it. 40-30k and 92 dB. Seemed like the best bang for the buck in terms of performance over all the other outdoor speakers as well. They sound great. I don't live in a neighborhood where I can crank them very loud, but at a reasonable volume, you get terrific sound and great bass. A great and very balanced sound. I play vinyl mostly and have been very happy. So happy in fact that I just bought my second pair when I saw them on sale! Strike now while you can! Weather resistance so far has been great. We've been through some very hard winters in the NE and thought about bringing in but didn't, and they've been fine. I even have one under a leaky gutter (not smart on my part), but no trouble at all. Installation is very well thought through as well. Very easy to mount the brackets, connect wire and then the speakers. Very easy to position as well.

Pros: balanced sound, great bass. Good value for sensitivity and frequency range. Especially when they are on sale. Weather resistance.

Love the sound quality on these speakers, nice housing and hardware, very easy to adjust and install. Bass while very good not what I expected after reading other reviews but not shabby, overall they sound fantastic. 6.5" drivers can only do so much, and my location could be better in some respects for bass response. Love the fact that these are made in Baltimore and not overseas, a true quality American product! Yah!

I made a purchase back in 2008 and when the tec support helped guide me to the equipment I purchased based off of my living room layout, what I was planning on doing and what I expected with success I had to see them again for what kind of outdoor speakers to get. Again based off of my backyard layout and what I was looking to hear I was suggested to purchase these speakers. I mounted mine under the eve and to the house itself. Beautiful sound and good base. Thanks again Crutchfield

I bought these same speakers for my back yard several years ago and just love the clear and crisp sound that they deliver, so I decided to buy a second pair for my garage. Because outdoor speakers tend to be made of more durable materials (e.g. some speakers use Kevlar cones and drivers) I also expect that means some compromise on sound quality, but not so with these speakers. Aside from their clarity, they also have an excellent range from lows to highs and everything in between.

Pros: *Clear, crisp sound *Speakers themselves seem highly durable

Cons: *On my older speakers (same model) I have noticed that the grills are now loose on both, just hanging off of the speaker a bit

I purchased four AW6500's to replace my aging Infinity Outrigger (large ones) speakers on my deck. As the Infinity's were still kicking after 10 years, they were getting a bit tired from being exposed to the elements 365 days a year (snow, rain, etc.). Everyone raves about the bass response of the AW6500's ... I honestly don't think the bass response is any better than my Infinity's were at normal listening volumes. You really have to put some power into the AW's to make them sing ... once you do, they sound awesome, but, are lacking at lower volumes, in my opinion. Now, DT claims to have a 20-40 hour' break-in' period for the sound to be at it's best. To summarize, these are very expensive, but, are worth it if you are going to push them. If you are looking for low-volume only speakers, these may not be a good choice for the cost. Thank goodness, I am going to push these on occasion. Hope that helps!

Pros: Sound fantastic at loud volumes.

Cons: Pricey Lack of bass response at low volumes.

Purchased these to replace a pair of NXG AW-6's that were installed when my home was built. Powered by a Yamaha receiver with 7.2 surround, using zone 2 for outside, the speakers are located on the ceiling of a large covered patio and are configured to take advantage of the radiators bouncing sound off the walls. The speakers are slightly bigger and heavier than the NXG's, but they're built almost identically (solid build). After just a couple of hours of use, the speakers sound clean and have plenty of volume for the area. That said, I expected more filling bass from the radiator design. While listening to music, it's still a huge disappointment walking from inside the house to the patio. Any returning guests that visit this summer will not notice that I replaced the speakers. In retrospect, I wish I had purchased a separate receiver for the patio to move out there for weekends and left the old speakers in place for casual use.

Pros: Solidly built

Cons: Very marginal improvement over cheaper speakers

These speakers do not sound too bad. They have great highs and mids. They are very efficient so a smaller amp. will make them sound good, unlike what the sales adviser told me. (ie 50W x 50W or higher) They have pretty good bass, however push the bass hard and you will get pops, like the cone slamming into the magnet. Not too impressed with that for the price. Also they have 5 and 3/8" driver, not 6 and 1/2" as advertised. They are superior to the cheap KLH and Advent models. I sent mine back and I'm happy with the PSB's I bought here. My system is powered by... Carver : CT-17 Preamp. Adcom: GFA-555 power amp. Pioneer PDR-W739 CD Player/Recorder. Polk Audio: SR-H1000 Sirius Tuner. Keep in mind they have awesome mids. and Highs, bass is descent.

Pros: Good Mids. and Highs.

Cons: Woofer pops when bass is pushed hard.

I bought a pair of Definitive Technology AW6500's 18 months ago. I mounted them under the eaves of the house directed at the fire-pit in the back yard about 50 feet away. These speakers are tremendous at any sound level! Whether at the end of the night with the embers dying and the levels low, or midday with the music cranked and conversation lively, they cut through with clarity and musicality that I haven't heard from any other brand. They are never tinny, they handle the lows and mids very well, and they have a wide sound field that fills the backyard. I run them through a Denon Ceol Piccolo networked receiver. There is nothing better than sitting outside by the fire, using your smartphone to control the Denon, and having near living-room quality audio at your command. I've owned Bose and Polk Audio, and I am very familiar with Klipcsh, and I am extremely happy with my decision to buy the Definitive Technology speakers. So happy that I just ordered an additional pair to face the deck off the side of the house!

Pros: Wide sound field Smooth across the sound spectrum Great sound at all sound levels Quality of construction

I bought these based on the many sales and good reviews that I had read about them. I'm doing an outdoor-backyard theater for an area that's about 25' x 25'. When I first pulled the speakers out of the box, I was a little skeptical. I love Polk speakers and I was torn between the AW6500 and the comparable Polk Atrium 8 for my front Left and Right. I thought that the Definitive enclosure felt kinda cheap and the brackets were a little too flexible. In comparison, I also purchased the Polk Atrium 7's as my rear surrounds and I felt that the enclosures and mounting method were WAY better. I was really concerned that I was going to have to return the speakers, thinking they were going to sound cheap, but instead I really enjoyed them. I thought the volume and clarity were really good, but there was a definite sweet spot in sound direction. I ran them earlier in the day to play the radio while I set up the movie and worked in the backyard. You can really hear the sound change as you walk by. I still think they were great as L&R speakers in the movie, but if I had to do it again, I would have bought the Polk Atrium 8's.

Pros: Good clean sound

Cons: Cheap enclosure/bracket. Sweet spot listening to music.

Pros: Great sound and looks.

Cons: 1) Banana plugs will limit the movement of the speaker within the hanging bracket - no problems without the banana plugs. 2) Expensive price. 3) Light weight - I expected them to weigh more.

I had loved what I read about them. But as usual, a little skeptical as to the final judgement. My Crutchfield Advisor told me they were spot on!! He was spot on as well!! They are AWESOME!! Could not have chosen a better set for the pool area outside!! The rest of my outdoor speakers are Bose regular outdoor speakers. These sound GREAT!!!! Blows the others away. Great Sound, Rich Bass, good indoor speaker quality for outside. Perfect for what I needed around the pool!!

Pros: Sound as good as good indoor speakers. Rich base, overall GREAT SOUND!!

Cons: None really.

Love these new Definitive Technology AW 6500 Outdoor Speakers. I was thinking I would have to spend more money on a powered subwoofer to get good bass outside, but these speakers blew me away. Full rich bass sound and great mid and high range also. Our 20'x40' covered deck is enveloped in great sound now thanks to these speakers.

Pros: Easy install, sounds great, looks great too! With a little positioning, you can change the bass reflection to suit your area.

Cons: That I did not have these years ago!

These speakers were easy to install in my new screened porch. They are attractive. The instructions were easy to understand, especially that the base side of the speaker needs to be near a wall or ceiling for appropriate bounce into the listening area. I have not had them up to full volume yet (again following instructions; they need to be broken in) but at low and medium volume they are magnificent. I am very happy with them and would recommend them.

Pros: easy installation

Cons: expense--but I guess high quality doesn't come free!

I installed these outside in my covered patio. The sound is fantastic. The bass response is excellent, even at low volume. My covered patio is 10'x30' and the sound is evenly distributed. I can play these speakers at low level and hear crisp music with great bass response, and still be able to carry a conversation. They are a bit pricey, but well worth the money if you enjoy entertaining outside and enjoy carrying a conversation without raising your voice above the speakers.

Pros: Easy installation, great sound.

Stunning sound ! I placed 4 of these 6500's across my 40 ft porch 12 ft high an powered them with a yamaha rxa 2020. Staggered the inputs starting on left , right, left, right. powered by 2 zones. Anywhere on the porch you get a stereo sound from this. Move out to the end of the pier and using Yamhas AV App, crank up the amps with your phone an shut your eyes for a outdoor concert. Sounds very nice at all levels. Nicer louder. Even nicer LOUDER. Having neighbors 500 ft away sucks. You will not waste your money buying these. Catch them on sale at Crutchfield an buy all you can. I've had mine 12 months they are as sharp as can be. I also used 4 anchors apiece because they can shake the wall. P.S. talk with their rep. He gave some fine points about these that i liked.

Replaced older pair of Niles with these recommended by a Crutchfield rep. I ordered them before I finished a porch project and set on them awhile before putting them up. They sound ok, but the boxes rattle at high volume and they are a lot hollower sound than the Niles. I am sure if I would have called Crutchfield they would have let me send them back and get the Niles, but I never did. I put my old 11 year old Niles up in the Pergola in the backyard, so I will end up getting the 7" Niles for my porch and put the DT's up in the Pergola. (Running them off Yamaha RX-V2600)

Pros: They sound good at low volume.

Cons: Look cheap and rattle like cheap speakers at high volume.

I installed these on my house over my patio. The speakers are just a little bigger than I expected but were easy to install. I drive them with a Crown XLS-1000 Class D amp, which is probably a bit more power than they need and not super refined. Music source is a mini headphone jack for my kids to plug their smart phones into. The speakers go plenty loud with clarity, and sound great. Bass is superb at low to reasonable volume levels, but begins to struggle if you try to make your patio sound like a club. I have no idea how durable they will be - mine are quite exposed to the Idaho elements, but have only been installed for a couple of weeks. Time will tell.

Pros: Great sound, easy to install. Generally perform per expectations, which were high based upon my experience with Def Tech..

Cons: On the large side.

After reading the glowing reviews here and elsewhere, I bought a pair of these speakers to replace my trusty Niles Audio OS-20's that had given 13 years of faithful service - and provided great sound - out on our lanai. Break-in of audio components can be important, and I was surprised to find that the owner's manual actually addressed this topic. Impressive! Though these speakers were destined for outdoor use, I initially connected them to my main 2-channel system for initial break-in and evaluation. At first they sounded a bit flat and congested, but they opened up noticeably after only a few hours of playing time. By the time I had logged the recommended 40 hours, I had spent several very long and enjoyable evenings sitting in front of these speakers, marveling at how well they acquitted themselves in a mega-bucks audiophile system! They have a nice, even tonal balance, and are clear and detailed. And they actually do a few audiophile tricks surprisingly well; I was particularly impressed with their imaging, soundstaging, and their dynamics. Unbelievable for a relatively inexpensive pair of outdoor speakers! In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with these speakers for outdoor use. And you may just find that you'll want to use them indoors, too!

Pros: Nice build quality Even tonal balance Clear and detailed sounding Great imaging and soundstaging for an outdoor speaker Mid-range is unusually realistic for a speaker in this price range

Cons: Positioning for best sound outdoors can be tricky. You'll want to experiment with placement in order to maximize bass response and minimize boominess / boxiness.

These speakers are absolutely phenomenal. We bought these to replace our worn out outdoor speakers around our pool and patio area. I researched for two months before deciding on these. The price seemed reasonable after reading the other positive reviews on blogs. I must say these speakers sound better than others out there that cost a lot more. The reproduction of the music (highs, mids and lows) is more than I expected. To put it plain and simple our neighbor called the cops on us the first night that I installed them. Well worth the money!!

Pros: Great sound. Easy to install.

Definitive Technology AW 6500

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have heard several different sets of Definitive Technology tower speakers over the years and have consistently liked their full range sound and neutrality. That is what got me interested in the AW 6500. I figured they would have the same "house sound" that I like in their other models, but obviously with less low end frequency response because of their size. I have the pair of these connected to the second zone of my Denon AVR-2808CI (110W, 8ohm), they play louder than I will ever need and their sound is reasonably full for their size. Maybe my expectations were unreasonably high, but for the price and an afternoon up and down a ladder trying out different locations under my eave, I am just not impressed. Regardless of where you place them, they have an inherent "boxiness" to them, like the cabinet is not rigid enough and resonates along with the drivers. I even played them inside set atop stands to see if I just had bad acoustics outside, but I heard the same "boxy" sound. To my ear, a decent table radio like the Sonos is more pleasant to listen to (but obviously can't be left outside). I enjoy having music outdoors too much to send these back, so I will keep them until I find something I like better. However, once I do, I will sell these or give them to a friend. They are not bad speakers, but for the price I was really hoping to like them more. I do not recommend these without listening to them first.

Pros: Can play loud, full sound Unobtrusive appearance when mounted horizontally

Cons: Boxy sounding Placement sensitive bass For the price I would be sure to shop around because I don't think that these are worth it.

I just completed renovating my backyard with a 1400 sf deck, half of which is covered by a roof extension and a 12' x 12' gazebo. I installed two of these speakers inside the gazebo area (pointed inward) and two on the roof extension pointed outward. I connected them to a Yamaha RX-A720 and use AirPlay to play music thru them. Mostly light rock, easy listening type of music. I was skeptical whether or not I would need a subwoofer to get decent bass response from outdoor speakers such as these, but as it turned out my worries were unfounded. These speakers have really great bass response and are crystal clear, no subwoofer required! I am extremely happy with the quality and amplitude of the sound. Overall fantastic speakers.

Pros: Great volume from such a small speaker Great bass response Crystal clear highs and midrange

Blown Away by DT AW6500

Dan B from Essex County, NJ on 5/19/2013

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The idea: Find a solution to deliver music to the deck and backyard. Big clear sound was a must. The choices: I was trying to decide between a Soundcast Outcast portable music system and static, wired outdoor speakers. Ultimately I decided to go with wired speakers and I couldn't be happier. I selected the DT AW6500 after considering other outdoor speaker options and decided that spending a few more extra dollars for a better pair of speakers would be money well spent. Boy, was I right! One of my main concerns was having sufficient bass response without the use of a subwoofer. I really didn't want to have to spend extra money on a subwoofer just to get adequate base outside. I mounted the AW6500's under the eave on the back of the house with the racetrack radiator aimed at the wall. My expectations were low on just how good bass could be coming from two outdoor speakers with 6-1/2" woofers and I was blown away. I found myself having to turn down the bass quite a bit as it was thumping quite loud. What pleased me the most is the sound coming from these despite being hooked up to a cheap 20 year old Sony STR-SE391 receiver. I wired them using 14AWG at a run of about 35 feet from receiver to speakers. I'm happy to say that there is no need for a subwoofer. There is nothing more satisfying than spending perhaps a little more than expected on a piece of equipment only to have it exceed your expectations and day in and day out prove that it was money well spent.

Pros: Build quality, sound clarity, bass response when installed with radiator reflecting off a wall

Cons: None

Pricey, but well worth the $$. Made some stands out of 1" PVC pipe that are a 2'x2' cubes with a PVC roof and floor (for protection from the sun & rain) and the speakers mounted in the middle so that we can easily move them around in the yard or machine shed. The PVC roof and floor also make them sound even better and protect them even if tipped over or turned upside down. We are still playing them on volume setting # 3 (10max) and have about 12 hrs on them. Using a Sony STR-D1011 Receiver with continuous RMS power output of 8 ohms, at 20 Hz-20 kHz, 130 W + 130 W..

Pros: Solidly built, sturdy mounting hardware, angle easily adjustable, nice fit and finish.

Great Sound - Likes Power

These are great speakers! Installed them around a swing pool deck and when I really put the power to them they respond with excellent sound and good full range for out door speakers. I would suspect that the base response would be even better if I hand them mounted against a wall or under a soffit. As it is they still sound great.

Pros: Easy to use mounting brackets and solid sound performance across the board.

Cons: To really get them to fill out they do need a good bit of power. You are going to need a solid strong amp pushing these speakers if you are going to get the most out of them.

These are excellent speakers. They play the audio spectrum very well, especially for outdoor speakers. The installation is easy and Crutchfield provides great tutorial videos for the newbie. I am used to good sound and have very nice indoor set ups. I was very pleased with the sound dispersion for our outdoor area. Even at low volumes the low end comes through. I suggest anyone not used to buying better speakers should read the conditioning article available. If you are not aware, it takes several hours of use before the drivers are at their best. I highly recommend these if you are thinking of upgrading or adding sound to your outdoor areas.

If you are looking for some very good sounding outdoor speakers the AW6500 is the way to go. My Yamaha 2010 at 140 watts a channel is a good match.Being able to control the Amp with my I-pod is great,if this is not an option for you I would get the volume control out side by your speakers. As normal the Crutchfield team did a great job in helping me choose what I needed for my application.

Pros: Good bass for being outside. Easy to install.Turn them up,they can handle it.

I was looking for a great outdoor speaker to add to our Pool Area... Sunken Bar needed great sound... added a roof on the bar - these speakers sound great with roof to bounce the bass off of... without the roof - they sounded really good - but with it added - they sound great. 2nd night they were up - roof wasn't done - they went through their 1st Monsoon - no issues as expected. Previous reviews made me purchase above and beyond the BOSE - glad I did... the sound is much fuller than Bose.

Pros: full sound - great speakers

If you are looking for outdoor speakers, look no further. I have heard almost every outdoor speaker out there and the Def Tech 6500's are far and away the best sounding outdoor speakers under $1,000. Bass reproduction is superb and mids and highs are fantastic. Mounting and bracket are easy and smart. They can get loud, more than enough for my half acre lot. Crazy high recommendation.

Pros: Sound, sound, bass, value, everything.

Cons: None (would have been nice if they came with mounting hardware)

Sounding Great!

To be honest and upfront, I haven't given these speakers the recommended 20-40 hours break-in period before writing this review. That said, they sound great! Highs and mids come through nicely, and bass is definitely present, assisted by the radiator. They aren't mounted near the house, so there's not really anything for the bass to reflect off of either. They also weathered their first storm with flying colors only two days after I hooked them up. It rained so hard that I couldn't see the end of my street a mere six houses away. The next day after the storm, I sat on my deck, fired up the receiver, and happy to hear them still working and sounding great. My wife also hit them with water from the hose while she was watering plants, got worried for a second, and remembered they're waterproof. They're being powered by a Pioneer VSX-1021 K on Zone 2 (which is also awesome, different music/volumes in the living room and kitchen than outside is just fun to do) and at full volume I'm ready to move away from them a bit. Makes me wonder what my neighbors think! If you were pushing them with more power, I can only imagine crisper sound and enough volume to fill a decent space.

Pros: Clean sound, good price, waterproof!

I replaced a 15 year old pair of Polk Audio M5 outdoor speakers which had served me well but one blew out. These are actually an upgrade in my opinion with better bass and crisper highs. Simple and easy bracket design made for an easy swap out and for the price point, I think these are a very good value. Highly recommend these Definitive Technology products and will consider their family of products first when looking at future purchases.

Pros: quality build, simple and effective hanging brackets, excellent sound with strong bass and crisp highs

I purchased these to replace some 8 yr old Bose 151s. After removing one of the 151s, and replacing it with a AW 6500, I played some music to see the difference. The difference blew me away. These are just excellent, and probably are the best outdoor speakers I've ever heard. I have a surround sound with all def tech speakers, and my wife could care less about the sound. She listened to these, and I actually got a "wow" out of her.

Pros: Great separation, with excellent bass, mids, and highs

These Def Tech outdoor speakers replace an aged Paradigm Stylus 250 which served me well over the past 10 years. My comments will be for my initial impression since I have just installed. The Def Techs are about 25% larger and provide about 25% better bass. The highs and mid-range are comparable but the planar woofer does add the expected sonic value. I like the sound. The installation was not a replacement in kind because of the size. I had to move a few inches from the vertical wall. No big deal though it will add some time to the installation. My wife even noticed a difference who is usually ambivalent to musical subtleties. I think the sound will continue to evolve as we pass the break-in period. I am looking forward to it.

Pros: Better bass Nice design -

Cons: Could use better guidance around installation recommendations.

AW6500 Outdoor Speakers on Acre Lot

After some research, decided to purchase and install a pair of these speakers about 35 feet apart below the soffits of a two story home, mounted to the siding. The sound is just amazing, as it projects incredibly well throughout the main entertainment area of my yard (large inground pool and patio spanning an area of about 100 x 80. The most impressive part of these speakers is the combination of bass performance and sound quality /projection at even lower volume levels. Should also note that I purchased the white ones and paint/primed them as indicated in the instructions to match my siding. Hardest part of the job was snaking the speakers wires through the siding over long distances.

Pros: Great sound. Paintable to match home.

Cons: Lack of paint templates to cover the speakers while painting (had to cut my own). You need to get your own mounting hardware as well, but that is acceptable (used Wing-Its)

These speakers sound really great. I have had them about 2 months now. They are attached to my outdoor patio ceiling about 10' apart next to the house wall. The installation into stucco took about a half hour and the provided brackets made it very easy. The speakers have very good low bass due to the 4 x 10 passive radiator that is facing the ceiling while the other drivers are angle down at about a 45 deg angle. I have them connected to an older DENON 2802. I have clear sound throughout the backyard (about 90' x 25') even though they are under the patio. I recommend these speakers and all other deftec's because of their high quality and excellent sound.

Pros: Quality, Clear highs, Pretty good bass, Ease of install

Cons: None so far

I have Bose 251's on my house over the patio...I had an 2nd set of off brand speakers for the other side of the patio....after replacing the 2nd set with these speakers...they just blew my mind. They are incredibly clear. The Bose are going to be taken off the house and will now be the 2nd set of speakers...the bass is 3x's better than the Bose. Don't waste your money on the 251's..these are clearly the better speaker. The only thing to remember is, these speakers are pretty big.

Pros: Nice clear music, excellent bass.

Cons: Wish they added more holes for hanging them on my house for they are too spread apart for my application.

I am a speaker snob and didn't expect much out of these, but I was pleasantly surprised. The sound quality is actually quite good and the bass radiator does a good job of reflecting sound off the outside wall. Of course, they only go so loud in an outdoor setting, but I think they are adequate. Looking forward to my next party to really test them out.

Pros: Good sound quality. Bass better than expected.

Cons: Limited volume in a large yard.

This speakers replace a pair of Russound Outback speakers that had been plugging away for the past five years on the back porch. As a previous reviewer mentioned it takes about 40 hours to break these speakers in. However right out of the box they sounded pretty good. Currently I'm using a very old Adcom 545II amp to drive them. The sound is well balanced, with a minimal midrange peak, and the bass is very good, for a speaker of this size. They are very efficient, so it doesn't take to much power to actually knock squirrels out off the trees in the back yard. Currently using a Logitech Touch, with the iPeng app, so I can happily control the sound remotely from the hammock with a smart phone. For the price these are very good outdoor speakers, highly recommended.

Pros: Balanced sound. Good base response.

Cons: 40 hour break in period, but, sometimes you gotta wait for the cake to bake.

I conducted exhaustive research and there simply is not an outdoor speaker with better "specs" than these for their size. After hooking them up (75 watt per channel Onkyo) I quickly assessed that they were worth about $350, not $500 a pair. After a decent break-in period (recommended by Def. Tech.) they loosened up and improved greatly...and now are well worth the $500. They will solidly hit the advertised 40 hz on the low end. I think the only better setup would be a separate subwoofer, which I considered building. They also seem to handle the power so well I plan on upgrading my amp as they seem to just begin hitting their sweet spot about the time my Onkyo is running out of head room. I mounted them on the house wall about 1 foot below the ceiling of my covered deck.

Pros: Best frequency range for size.

Cons: stickers a pain to remove (frustrating)

Just finished wiring the AW6500s to a Sonos Zoneplayer 120 and couldn't be more pleased. They sound very good. Crisp, clear, and the bass was surprisingly satisfying. They just fit under my eaves, so they will be somewhat protected. I used banana clips to connect them, looks professional and easier to remove than twisting the bindings. The ZP120 has a perfect amount of power to drive them and I have turned the bass up to my liking. Only thing I wish was better was the mounting bracket. It's fine to mount the speaker, but only allows the speaker to be tilted up or down. It would be great if you could turn left or right. I would definitely recommend these speakers to others!

I am powering them with a Sony STR-DN1010. The sound is rich, loud and full ranging. Even in a large open area, the bass comes through and the highs are crisp and clean. It is difficult to pick outdoor speakers partly because there are very few reviews on them. Having Definitive speakers for my living room and after speaking to DefTech support for suggestions, I decided to purchase those 6500 and I would definitely recommend them to anyone. The sound is very clear, separation is excellent, and bass is good too (for outdoors). I have placed the speaker's "baffle" facing the wall to improve bass which worked the best for my setting. Few suggestions: - Even if those speakers are relatively efficient they definitely like a relatively powerful high quality amplifier (I have Harman Kardon and a Marantz amps for my system) - if you are looking for tons of bass you might want to consider pairing them with a sub-woofer - Play around with positioning to get the best sound Overall I am very happy with this product and the service received by Crutchfield, all their videos made my choice and installation easier too. Thank you!

I am using these speakers for my backyard oaisis. I have almost 1 acre of land and with these speakers turned only 1/2 way up can hear them all the way back with perfect clarity. I'm using a Sonos Z100 to power them and there is more than enough sound/power to spare. I was somewhat dissapointed that the speakers were "lighter" than I thought they would be and that they didn't come with the mounting hardware (screws and such, just the bracket) for the cost I thought they would be a little more solid feeling and would come equiped with all the mounting hardware needed.
