    Audio Section

Hybrid Digital Amplification: NAD has moved away from the old-fashioned power-hungry linear power supplies and Class AB output stages that waste nearly half of the energy consumed and produce heat rather than sound. Instead, NAD has developed even better performing circuits based on switch mode power supplies and Class D output stages. Once thought to be inferior to traditional topologies, this new Hybrid Digital Amplifier design is very linear over a wide bandwidth and provides consistent performance into all speaker loads, providing a dramatic advancement over previous Class AB and Class D amplifier designs.

    • Customized Hypex UcD Output Stage: The C 388 BluOS 2i uses a customized version of the proven Hypex UcD output stage operating in a fully balanced bridge configuration. This allows for massive power with nearly un-measurable distortion and noise in the audible range. Every detail of this design has been carefully planned and perfectly executed to deliver every last drop of performance.
    • Sophisticated Power Supply: The C 388 BluOS 2i's power supply is capable of 200 watts continuously and over 600 watts instantaneously to allow for short-term musical transients. It can operate with any AC mains voltage from 100 to 240 volts and provides pure DC power to all the various stages of the C 388 BluOS 2i. This highly efficient supply also provides near perfect regulation of voltage across a wide range of conditions and provides a solid noise-free foundation for the amplifying stages.

Full Disclosure Power (FDP): NAD uses Full Disclosure Power (FDP), the most demanding criterion for performance measurement. FDP specifies distortion under the most extreme conditions of low impedance loads and frequency extremes, rather than the simple and easy 1kHz @ 8 ohms test quoted by many of other manufactures. NAD uses this stricter performance criterion because it more closely matches the demands of real music and real loudspeakers. Maintaining specified distortion at 4/8Ω and at 20-20kHz is a much more difficult achievement. The benefit of NAD's Full Disclosure Power is the total elimination of audible distortion at any listening level. This provides pinpoint imaging and realism with music and movies alike.

    • Continuous Power: 150 watts x 2-channel (@ 20-20kHz, into 4Ω or 8Ω, at 0.009% THD, with both channels driven)
    • IHF Dynamic Power: 400W into 2Ω / 350W into 4Ω / 250W into 8Ω

Binding Post Speaker Outputs: The amplifier features A & B speaker terminals to power two pair of loudspeakers. The speaker terminals consist of eight binding posts that will accept single banana plugs (single only), pin connectors, spade lugs, and bare wire (up to 10AWG). The amplifier supports 4Ω speakers when only one pair is connected, however, when two pair of speakers are connected a minimum impedance of 8Ω is recommended.

Discrete Headphone Amplifier: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i incorporates a discrete headphone amplifier with low output impedance and very high output voltage capability, enough to drive even high impedance studio monitor headphones. Connecting a set of headphone to unit's front-panel 1/4" jack will mute the speaker outputs. Volume, tone, and balance controls are all operable during headphone listening.

Line Outputs: The C 388 BluOS 2i features a low impedance line-level stereo output that can connect to another other amplifier or powered subwoofer to extend the hybrid digital DAC amplifier's versatility.

Tone Control: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i hybrid digital DAC amplifier lets you adjust Bass (60Hz) & Treble (20kHz) from -7 to +7dB, as well as Balance between the left & right speakers (L10 to R10).

Filters: Filters provide easy bi-amplification or subwoofer integration by adding the required filters to redirect bass frequencies to the subwoofer. Select High Pass or Full Range. When High Pass is selected, low pass audio signals within the 40Hz to 200Hz are sent to the C 388 BluOS 2i's subwoofer preout and high pass audio signals are sent to the C 388 BluOS 2i's amplifier section and speaker outputs. Select Full-Range to deliver audio signals with the whole frequency spectrum to the C 388 BluOS 2i's amplifier section and speaker outputs.

    Variety of Sources

Bluetooth w/ aptX: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i integrated amplifier features built-in Bluetooth 4.0 with support for wireless music streaming from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, table, laptop, or desktop computer. You'll be able to stream stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth source device to your compatible NAD digital integrated amp or digital preamp. In addition, the MDC BluOS 2i module offers aptX for "CD-quality" (44.1kHz/16-bit) sound from Bluetooth aptX compatible source devices (such as Android smartphones & tablets). You can even distribute Bluetooth audio to the rest of your Bluesound wireless audio system throughout your home or office over WiFi.

Dual USB-A Ports: The C 388 BluOS 2i features two USB (type-A) ports to directly connect your USB mass storage class (MSC) device; such as a thumbdrive or external hard-drive. The unit's USB ports support music playback from these compatible USB devices formatted in FAT 32. Not only can USB audio be played back on your compatible NAD digital integrated amplifier or digital preamplifier, but can also be wirelessly distributed to the rest of your Bluesound components throughout your home for multiroom playback. The USB ports are not compatible with the direct connection of an Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android devices.

Note: There is also a mini-USB (type-B) port that is used for service purposes only (not for consumer use). Only authorized service personnel can access this USB port.

Digital Inputs: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and two coaxial (RCA) digital inputs. These digital inputs will support 2ch PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital/DTS).

Analog Inputs: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i's stereo RCA inputs (2 Line/1 Phono) can accommodate all kinds of analog source components by offering ideal input impedance characteristics with linear ultra-low-noise buffer amplifiers to prevent any sonic degradation caused by inappropriate loading of the source device.

MM Phono Stage w/ RIAA Equalization: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i hybrid digital DAC amplifier includes an MM Phono stage with precisely accurate RIAA equalization, high overload margins, extremely low noise, and an innovative circuit to suppress infrasonic noise that is present on all LPs - all without affecting bass response.

Modular Design Construction (MDC): Modular Design Construction (MDC), an exclusive feature of NAD, allows you to customize the NAD integrated amplifier with additional capabilities and features, now or in the future. One available MDC slot can accommodate a single MDC module (sold separately).

    • 4K HDMI Module The MDC HDM-2 (745HDM2, sold separately) adds HDMI capability with three HDMI inputs and one HDMI output for video pass-through. Based on the latest 6GHz HDMI chip, the MDC HDM-2 includes full support for UHD (4K) video pass through to a video monitor, plus support for 24-bit/192kHz 2Ch PCM (not compatible with Dolby Digital/DTS).
Note: These MDC modules are all sold separately (not included with the C 388 BluOS 2i). You can add only one MDC module.
    Wireless Network & Multiroom Audio

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i can connect to your home network and Internet provider via a hardwired Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack connector or wireless WiFi (802.11 b/g/n) connection. Either network/internet connection allows you to stream music from internet radio, select online music services and stored music libraries on your network using BluOS.

Note: The included USB/WiFi dongle must be plugged into one of the USB ports on the C 388 BluOS 2i. If wireless connectivity is poor connect the USB/WiFi dongle to the supplied 2' USB extension cable for better signal.

BluOS Wireless High-Resolution Multiroom Audio: The NAD C 388 BluOS 2i comes with NAD's MDC BluOS 2i module pre-installed, making it a part of the BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio eco-system - consisting of powered speakers, soundbar speakers, amplifiers, players, and hard-drives. The BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio ecosystem uses your home's wired or wireless network to connect multiple Bluesound products and play your music in perfect sync, or different music simultaneously, anywhere in your home. BluOS can wirelessly transmit lossless music up to 24-bit/192kHz at ultra-fast speeds with no lag and zero loss in sound quality.

    • Compatible Multiroom Audio Sources: The following audio sources can be used for multiroom audio playback - internet radio (including TuneIn & iHeart Radio); online music services (including Tidal, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer, Slacker, and Napster); Bluetooth & USB audio, plus music libraries (from computers and NAS drives).*NAD components using the BluOS MDC are unable to share their analog or digital inputs with other BluOS devices due to hardware limitations..

Not familiar with this type of connector, so the spade size is not something I can visualize easily. (Certainly over the years, I've had plenty of experience with "in the box" connectors of this type - I'm guessing things get tweaked in many ways when offered by quality makers) Looked at my NAD. Speaker posts a good size. But again, comparisons are nil and I don't have anything handy that gives an actual size of the posts. I'm sure Crutchfield can give you a more accurate opinion. I took the time to write this to tell you that I am very satisfied with my NAD and is worth the look. Good luck

    Q
I have an odd question but one that is important to me. I just bought a pair of speakers B&W 706 S2's. Now I'm looking to pair it up this IA? Actually 2 questions: 1: is this a good fit? 2: I share my music room with my peloton bike which I would like to use with my new system but I am concerned about the bluetooth connection? If I have problems connecting my peloton bike to the bluetooth of the NAD C388 can I exchange it for a different amp?

I purchased the C-388 for four reasons: 1) I needed a powerful amplifier to drive a set of Wharfdale EVO 4.4 speakers; 2) NAD's longstanding reputation for quality and value; 3) I wanted to be able to access a large digital music library on my home computer; and 4) I wanted the convenience of controlling music play from wherever I am sitting. I live in a fairly large open-design home with my prime listening area set up in a loft out of sight from the main living area below. I've had no problems connecting via bluetooth from my iPhone or iPad nor controlling play from the living area, a great convenience for entertaining. I haven't had time yet to explore options on the NAD and BluiOS apps downloaded on my mobile devices. Because I have a very large library of music across digital and analogue formats, I haven't yet felt the need to explore streaming services through the NAD's internet function. However, it is available and there was no problem connecting to my home network. As for returns, it would be good to check with Crutchfield. Generally, their return policy is 60 days. Looks like you've got a super setup. A brother recently purchased a set of B&W floor speakers and couldn't be happier. The NAD should have more than enough power to drive your speakers. Enjoy!

You would have to download the the BluOS app on a smartphone or IPad and see if it finds the Peloton bike.

Can I connect a turntabl with a moving coil cartridge to this amplifier?

You would need an amplifier to boost the MC phono cartridge's level. The phono pre-amp in the C388 is designed for MM cartridges.
    fritz  Jul 13, 2020
    A
You can, but you will need a separate phono amp in order to do so. The NAD's internal phono stage only supports an MM cartridge.
    michael  Jul 13, 2020

Yes, this amp as a phono stage to connect into. I plugged my pro-ject classic directly in and the sound is great/crisp, better then the rega phono amp is used prior (maybe not quite as warm).

    Q
Does this natively support RAAT? (Roon's network protocol). Roon's website seems to suggest yes but nothing in the specs or manual says this amplifier supports RAAT.

I am not a techie and am not sure what you are asking. It does have 2 USB ports and a Lan connection as well as Bluetooth. So far, I've just been playing records, CDs and XM. I am very happy with it so far.
    thomas w  Jun 09, 2020

Based on the NAD website, yes. Personally I do not have the HDMI module on my amplifier. I only have the BluOS-2i module. Do a search online for NAD MDC Modules and the the NAD link at the bottom of the page lists the comparable amplifiers with the HDMI module and the C388 is listed. I hope it helps. Take care!!!
