A classic amplifier for the digital age

NAD C 399 Integrated Amp with MDC2 BluOS Module

NAD's C 399 BluOS-D integrated amplifier gives you pristine power and multi-room streaming with forward-thinking flexibility.

The C 399, NAD's flagship integrated amplifier in its Classic line, will give you the fantastic sound we've come to expect from NAD. It gets the basics right, including a precise volume control with accurate channel balance and low-noise circuits. And it also features a high-performance DAC and future-ready expansion slots — one of which contains the new MDC2 BluOS-D network streaming module.

Masterful power

This amp will render your digital and analog sources in sparkling, authoritative detail. Previously featured only in NAD's Masters Series, the C 399's HybridDigital nCore amplifier is super-efficient and effortlessly powerful. It can deliver 180 watts per channel continuous power, and 250 watts per channel instantaneous power. That means it can handle crazy dynamic peaks, from hard-hitting electronic dance tracks to explosive Marvel movies. And it'll drive demanding low-impedance speakers with cool-running high-current power and vanishingly low noise and distortion levels — even when cranked.

High-end digital decoding

The high-performance built-in ESS Sabre ES9028 DAC previously only came in NAD's Master Series components. It's capable of decoding high-res music files at up to 32-bit/384kHz, and it's known for its wide dynamic range, ultra-low noise and distortion, and near-zero levels of jitter (timing errors that can smear musical detail).

Flexible connections

The C 399 has two optical and two coaxial digital inputs for taking advantage of its great internal DAC. You also get an HDMI eARC port for playing TV sound and controlling the amplifier volume with the TV's remote control. Analog connections include two pairs of RCA line-level inputs, plus a moving magnet phono stage that gives you precise, natural sound with extremely low noise. The phono preamp's circuit design cuts down on frequencies below the threshold of human hearing — that inherent turntable rumble — without conceding fantastic bass response.

In addition to two sets of speaker outputs, the C 399 has preamp output jacks and dual subwoofer outputs. Two-way Bluetooth with aptX® HD Bluetooth allows 24-bit streaming from mobile devices, and high-quality output to compatible Bluetooth headphones. A front-panel 1/4" jack connects you to a built-in headphone amplifier that can drive even demanding high-impedance cans.

Future-ready expansion slots

NAD C 399 with BluOS MDC2 Module

BluOS connectivity with NAD's new two-way MDC2 architecture

The C 399 is the first component to feature NAD's next-generation MDC2 architecture. MDC (Modular Design Construction) is a concept NAD introduced in 2006 to "make obsolescence obsolete," and this new version allows two-way communication between the module and the amp.

The pre-installed MDC2 BluOS-D module gives you 24-bit high-res music playback from sources on your local network or from the web. Stream music from personal drives or from internet streaming services. The selection of supported services — including TIDAL, Spotify®, Qobuz, and Amazon Music, among others — is one of the most impressive we've seen. Apple users can easily stream from their devices using AirPlay® 2.

New two-way communication also lets this module stream music from your connected sources — even a turntable — to BluOS components in other rooms.

Dial in perfect sound for your space

It's rare that you find an acoustically perfect space for your system. The BluOS-D module's Dirac Live function lets you compensate for your room's acoustics to get clear and accurate bass and a balanced soundstage across the audio spectrum. Use the supplied mic and free user-friendly app to measure your room's acoustic response, then upload correction curves to the module. Thanks to its two-way architecture, the Dirac Live room correction works for all sources connected to the amp.

HybridDigital nCore Amplifier: Trickled down from NAD's Masters Series, the C 399 BluOS-D's HybridDigital nCore amplifier is highly efficient and remarkably powerful. It can deliver 180 Watts per channel continuous power, and 250 Watts per channel instantaneous power, allowing the C 399 to produce musical transients effortlessly. The HybridDigital nCore design is renowned for its wide bandwidth, flat frequency response, clean clipping behavior with instant recovery, high current capability, and stability into demanding low-impedance speaker loads. With an extremely low level of harmonic distortion, noise and distortion are incredibly low under all operating conditions. As a result, the C 399 BluOS-D is able to produce neutral, distortion-free sound even at very high listening levels, with thrilling dynamics, exquisite detail, and superb portrayal of space.

32-Bit/384kHz ESS Sabre DAC (ES9028): Also trickled down from the Masters Series is the 32-bit/384kHz ESS Sabre high-resolution DAC (ES9028); a design noted for its wide dynamic range, ultra-low noise and distortion, and near-zero levels of clock jitter. This premium DAC (digital-to-analog converter) enables the C 399 BluOS-D to reproduce all of its digital sources with amazing musicality, a precise soundstage, and stunning clarity.

Dirac Live Room Correction: The C 399 BluOS-D employs Dirac Live Room Correction software that delivers optimized sound quality for your home theater system. The built-in Lite version of the computer software (for Windows or Mac), with the option to upgrade to a full-featured version for $99, measures the acoustic performance of the system within the listening room and optimizes playback performance to provide the most transparent music reproduction possible. The setup process is automated and very simple, giving you the control they need to precisely tune for the best results. With Dirac Live, you can build the perfect listening environment that corrects for both the timing and colorations in sound using the supplied microphone and its powerful computer software.

Note: There is also manual Tone Control for adjusting Bass, Treble, and Balance.

HDMI eARC: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D features an HDMI eARC jack to connect the integrated amplifier to your TV's HDMI eARC or ARC input. The integrated amplifier's eARC jack only supports 2ch PCM (up to 24-bit/192kHz). Audio from the HDMI eARC jack can be played back at the C 399 BluOS-D and wirelessly distributed to other Bluesound and BluOS components in your home for multiroom playback.

    • The HDMI eARC jack does not support Dolby Digital, DTS or other multichannel audio formats.
    • The HDMI eARC jack only supports audio transmission; video is not supported.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The NAD C Series C 399 BluOS-D is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and two coaxial (RCA) digital input. These digital inputs will support 2ch PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).

Analog Line-Level & Phono Inputs: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D offers two analog line-level inputs and one MM Phono input, all consisting of stereo RCA jacks. There is an Analog bypass function for the line-level and phono inputs, allowing the analog signals to remain in the analog domain without analog-to-digital conversion. You can also adjust the gain of each analog input.

    • Line-Level: The two analog stereo RCA inputs can accommodate all kinds of analog line-level source components by offering ideal input impedance characteristics with linear ultra-low-noise buffer amplifiers to prevent any sonic degradation caused by inappropriate loading of the source device.
    • MM Phono: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D integrated amplifier includes an MM Phono stage with precisely accurate RIAA equalization, high overload margins, extremely low noise, and an innovative circuit to suppress infrasonic noise that is present on all LPs - all without affecting bass response.

USB-A Port: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D is equipped with a rear-panel USB-A port for connection of a USB mass storage class (MSC) device, such as a thumbdrive or external hard-drive (an external hard-drive will require separate AC power). The unit's USB-A port supports playback of a variety of compressed and high-resolution music files stored on a compatible USB MSC device formatted in FAT 32, NTFS, or Linux ext4. Your connected USB MSC device will appear as a local source within the BluOS app on your Apple iOS or Android OS device. Access and playback of music files stored on your connected USB MSC device will be done through the BluOS app.

    • The USB-A port is not compatible with the direct connection of an Apple iOS or Android device. It also does not support USB hubs or card-readers.
    • There is also a second USB-A port that is used for service purposes only (not for consumer use). Only authorized service personnel can access this port.

Bluetooth aptX HD: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D features two-way wireless Bluetooth capability that is powered by aptX HD for the highest possible sound quality available. aptX HD supports 48kHz/24-bit LPCM audio over a Bluetooth wireless connection for a "better-than-CD" listening experience. The C 399 BluOS-D can act as a Bluetooth Receiver or Bluetooth Transmitter (but not both at the same time). The C 399 BluOS-D supports SSP (Secure Simple Pairing) for wireless Bluetooth connectivity of compatible devices. You can pair multiple devices with the C 399 BluOS-D, but only one device can be connected and used at a time (the BluOS Controller app must be used for pairing). The NAD C 399 BluOS-D has a Bluetooth wireless range of approximately 33'.

    • Receiver Mode: In Receiver mode, you can wirelessly stream stored music and music apps from your smartphones, tablets and laptops to the NAD C 399 BluOS-D. You can control basic playback functions (Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the remote, but your Bluetooth source device will have to be used for more advanced music navigation. The C 399 BluOS-D does not display song/artist/album information. However, you can view song/artist information and album art from the BluOS app on your Apple iOS or Android device.
    • Transmitter Mode: In Transmitter mode, you can wirelessly stream analog & digital inputs of the C 399 BluOS-D and BluOS network content to a set of Bluetooth enabled headphones (only one set of headphones can be connected at a time). Because the NAD C 399 BluOS-D does not support Receiver & Transmitter mode simultaneously, you cannot listen to a Bluetooth audio streaming source on a set of Bluetooth headphones through the C 399 BluOS-D. There is no audio output from the C 399 BluOS-D's speaker, preamp, or headphone outputs when the unit is wirelessly streaming to a set of Bluetooth headphones.

Note: To utilize the Receiver mode or Transmitter Mode for Bluetooth, make sure the included Bluetooth antennas are connected and installed on the back of the integrated amplifier.

Outputs: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D is equipped with A/B binding post speaker output terminals, stereo RCA preouts, and dual mono-subwoofer outputs.

    • A/B Binding Post Speaker Outputs: The amplifier features A & B speaker terminals to power two pair of loudspeakers. The speaker terminals consist of eight binding posts that will accept single banana plugs (single only), pin connectors, spade lugs, and bare wire (up to 10AWG). The amplifier supports 4O speakers when only one pair is connected, however, when two pair of speakers are connected a minimum impedance of 8O is recommended.
    • Stereo RCA Pre-Outs: The stereo RCA pre-outs lets you use the C 399 BluOS-D as a high-performance pre-amplifier with a more powerful external amplifier (sold separately).
    • Dual Sub Outputs: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D is equipped with two discrete mono-RCA sub outputs to connect up to two powered subwoofers. The subwoofer outputs have a built-in low pass crossover that can be adjusted in the BluOS app from 40-200Hz (80Hz default).

Discrete Headphone Amplifier: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D incorporates a discrete headphone amplifier with low output impedance and very high output voltage capability, enough to drive even high impedance studio monitor headphones. Connecting a set of headphone to unit's front-panel 1/4" jack will mute the speaker outputs. Volume, tone, and balance controls are all operable during headphone listening.

    BluOS Enabled

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The NAD C Series C 399 BluOS-D can connect to your home network and ISP (Internet Service Provider) via a hardwired Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack connector or wireless dual-band 2.4/5GHz WiFi (802.11ac) connection. Either network/internet connection allows you to stream music from internet radio, select online music services and stored music libraries on your network using BluOS.

Note: If using a wireless network connection, make sure the included WiFi antennas are connected and installed on the back of the integrated amplifier.

BluOS Wireless High-Resolution Multiroom Audio: The NAD C 399 BluOS-D is part of the BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio eco-system - consisting of powered speakers, soundbar speakers, amplifiers, players, and hard-drives. The BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio ecosystem uses your home's wired or wireless network to connect multiple Bluesound products and play your music in perfect sync, or different music simultaneously, anywhere in your home. BluOS can wirelessly transmit lossless music up to 24-bit/192kHz at ultra-fast speeds with no lag and zero loss in sound quality.

    • Compatible Multiroom Audio Sources: The following audio sources can be used for multiroom audio playback - internet radio (including TuneIn & iHeart Radio); online music services (including Tidal, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer, Slacker, and more); Bluetooth & USB audio; music libraries (computers and NAS drives); Analog inputs (Line & Phono); as well as digital inputs (HDMI, Optical, and Coaxial).
    • Number of BluOS Zones: Up to 16 Bluesound devices can be connected in a strictly wireless environment. Demonstrated practice has shown that you can create up to 8 groups of 8 Bluesound devices or 4 groups of 16 Bluesound devices. If you want to connect more than 16 Bluesound devices, you will need to connect the Bluesound devices to your network using a wired connection. BluOS can then control up to 64 devices in a strictly wired environment.
Note: Make sure the NAD C 399 BluOS-D has the latest BluOS software and firmware update installed.

BluOS Controller App: The free BluOS Controller app (for Apple iOS 9.3-up, Android OS 5.0-up, Windows Vista-up, and Mac OS X 10.15-up) turns your mobile device or computer into a full-featured wireless remote control for the NAD C 399 BluOS-D and the BluOS wireless multiroom audio system. The BluOS Controller app on your compatible device uses your home's WiFi network to connect with Bluesound devices, so you can play all the music you love anywhere in your home for a wireless multiroom music experience. Get on-demand access to your music libraries on your home network, stream live Internet radio from almost any place in the world, or listen to one of the many music services available on Bluesound, all from the palm of your hand with the easy-to-use BluOS Controller app.

    • Multiroom Audio: Play a different song at the same time in different rooms, or group all your BluOS enabled devices together and listen to your favorite music in perfect sync throughout your home.
    • Now Playing Screen: Control your music and adjust the volume in any room, get rich album artwork and detailed artist info, right from the Now Playing screen. Even check what quality you are streaming at to ensure the best possible listening experience.
    • Individual Songs & Playlists: Tap a song and have it play instantly, or create and edit playlists on the fly by simply adding songs or entire albums to the play queue. Playlists can then be saved inside the app and listened to at any time.

High Resolution Audio: High-resolution audio tracks are either 24-bit/96kHz or 24-bit/192kHz, and contain up to 6.5x more data than standard CDs, letting you hear all the detail of your favorite music in superior quality. With full support for hi-res audio, you can stream WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, WMA-Lossless, MQA music files over your home's WiFi network or directly from a connected USB mass storage class device. Bluesound also supports compressed music files such as MP3, AAC, WMA and OGG. Bluesound has been designed to work with today's larger music collections, and has indexed libraries up to 200,000 songs in demonstrated practice (this will depend on the music's metadata & artwork). If you are an Apple Music subscriber and add the C 399 BluOS-D to the Apple Home App on your iPhone or iPad, you can use your iOS device or HomePod to say things like - "Hey Siri, play jazz in the Living Room" or "Hey Siri, turn up the volume in the Kitchen." You can even group Gen 2i Bluesound products with older Bluesound products in the BluOS App to add AirPlay 2 compatibility to your entire BluOS system.

Roon Ready: Roon Ready network devices (such as Bluesound and NAD) have Roon's streaming technology built-in, and are certified by Roon Labs to provide the highest level of quality and performance in network streaming. Roon is a feature rich music library and playback application that compiles all the music files available to your network and makes them easily available to play across all other Roon enabled audio devices in your home. Roon manages digital music files (including FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, DSD, and MQA) collected on hard drives and networked storage. It can also watch your iTunes library, and optionally integrate with the Tidal and Qobuz music streaming services. Roon is available for mobile, laptop or desktop devices. When you open the Roon app, it will display your complete audio library together with its metadata and artwork along with all the Roon enabled devices around your house. Simply select the music you wish to play and the Bluesound product or other Roon device in which you want to hear it on.

Note: To use Roon you will need a Roon Core running on the same network as the Bluesound product. The Core is media server software that runs on your computer, NAS, or turnkey appliance (like Nucleus or ROCK - sold separately), located on the network within your home.

    Customer Q&A

    2 questions already asked

    Q
Does BLUOS on the C 399 support multiple sources or just one source at a time? In other words, if I have two zones, can I play music from a different source on each zone?
    [ Matthew  Aug 14, 2022 ]
    1 answer
    A
This integrated amp only supports 1 zone and is not capable of playing a second audio source in a second zone. However, the BluOS platform does allow multizone audio playback of different sources. It is possible to have two of these C 399 BluOS-D units and each one streaming a different audio source for the speakers connected to each unit.

    Q
    Does this have HT bypass?

    A
This unit does not have a Home Theater Bypass sadly, William. You can still use this with a Home Theater receiver for better 2 channel listening, just connecting to the line in and using the volume controls onboard the NAD as well as your AVR. I hope this helps William!
