About the Bowers & Wilkins M-1

A sleek, versatile satellite speaker

Bowers & Wilkins M-1 speakers offer a big sound from a pair of compact, low-profile speakers.
A sleek, versatile satellite speaker
The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 is designed to serve just about any role in your home theater system. You can set up two for stereo music, add more to serve as surround speakers, and even mount one horizontally as a center channel speaker. The speaker's 4" woven glass fiber cone woofer and 1" metal dome tweeter deliver crisp, accurate sound for music, TV, and movies.
Smart design
Part of the secret of the M-1's powerful sound is the clamshell enclosure. It's formed from two interlocking, continuously curving sections, so there are no joints or seams. That allows for carefully controlle airflow that reduces noise.
Of course, the speakers' drivers are something special, too. The tweeters are tube-loaded, borrowing an idea from Bowers & Wilkins' revolutionary Nautilus floor-standers.
The midbass/midrange driver also benefits from ideas developed in Bowers & Wilkins' distinguished speaker lineup. It features an Anti-Resonance plug that debuted with their PM1 loudspeaker. It's a mushroom-shaped device made of polymer foam that soaks up resonance and reduces cone break-up, creating unparalleled clarity and detail in the midrange.
Multiple mounting options
The M-1's built-in adjustable tabletop stand lets you mount the speaker vertically or horizontally, and angle the speaker toward your listening position. The included wall mount offers similar positioning options, and comes with a decorative bracket cover. The tabletop stand and wall brackets have built-in speaker terminals that let you route speaker wire internally for the cleanest possible look.
Bowers & Wilkins has created floor stands just for the M-1, to help reduce unwanted resonance and place them for optimal sound.
Get more bass
A pair of M-1 speakers has good bass response especially considering how small these speakers are. But to get the best possible performancee, we suggest using a subwoofer, especially for home theater applications. Bowers & Wilkins recommends the ASW608 powered subwoofer is as an ideal match.

Features
Tube-Loaded, Aluminum Dome Tweeter: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 satellite loudspeaker features a 1" aluminum dome tweeter. As well as featuring a unique surround material, the aluminum dome tweeter is tube-loaded; a design innovation B&W first introduced on their groundbreaking Nautilus loudspeaker. The tube works by soaking up unwanted resonance from the back of the tweeter, so the sound you hear from the front is as detailed and precise as possible.
Woven Glass-Fiber Midbass/Midrange Driver: The M-1 satellite loudspeaker houses a 4" woven glass-fiber midbass/midrange driver with rubber surround. This redesigned midbass/midrange driver features B&W's AntiResonance Plug; an acoustic innovation first seen on B&W's high-end PM1 loudspeaker. Constructed from polymer foam, the mushroom-shaped device soaks up resonance like a sponge while also reducing cone break-up, creating unparalleled clarity and detail in the midrange.
Bass Port: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 utilizes a rear-firing port for greater efficiency and increased bass response from a compact satellite loudspeaker.
Clamshell Cabinet: The key to the M-1's rock-solid sound is its unified, integrated, "clamshell" enclosure. The "clamshell"-style cabinet is formed from just two interlocking, continuously curving sections. The cabinet fits together beautifully with a minimum of noise-inducing seams and joints. The result is a speaker that's rigid, well-damped, and air-tight. The M-1 is available in a Matte Black or Matte White finish
Spring-Post Terminals with Cable Management: The B&W M-1 satellite loudspeaker is outfitted with both spring-post terminals and screw-down terminals. The pre-installed pedestal base has integrated spring-post terminals. The wall-mount bracket has integrated screw-down terminals. Either terminal set will accept up to 14AWG speaker wire. When connected the speaker wire disappears into the back of the table-top stand or wall-mount bracket via a specially-designed, pre-wired arm support.
Note: The spring-post and screw-down terminals will not accept banana plugs, pin-connectors, or spade-lugs.
Mounting Options: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 offers flexible mounting options with the pre-installed table-top stand, included wall-mount bracket, and optional floorstands (sold separately). Each mounting option allows you position the speaker vertically or horizontally. The horizontal orientation allows you to use the speaker as a center channel. The "B&W" logo badge on the speaker grille also rotates vertically or horizontally.
- Table-Top Stand: The pre-installed table-top stand features a ball-and-socket mechanism that allows you to position the M-1 speaker horizontally or vertically. The table-top stand features a rubber foot that provides safe and secure placement on a shelf, table, desk, or other piece of furniture. The table-top stand allows you tilt the speaker upward in case your mounting surface is too low.
- Wall-Mount Bracket: The M-1 speaker can also be mounted to your wall (vertically or horizontally), using the included wall bracket. The base of the table-top stand will need to be removed, leaving only the ball-and-socket arm assembly attached to the speaker. Once the included bracket is screwed into your wall studs (screws not supplied), the arm assembly of the speaker attaches and secures to the bracket. The ball-and-socket arm assembly allows you to angle the speaker downward 27-degrees to aim the sound at your listening area. This wall-mount bracket should never be used to attach M-1 speaker to a ceiling. The M-1 is not compatible with other models of wall-mount brackets.
- Optional Speaker Stands: The optional B&W speaker stands (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) match the M-1 satellites speakers, placing them at the ideal listening height. The speaker stands place the M-1 speaker in a vertical or horizontal orientation. The table-top pedestal stand is removed to mount the M-1 speaker's ball-and-sock arm assembly to the B&W speaker stands.
Note: A torx-key (hidden under the removable rubber foot of the pedestal stand) is used to make mounting adjustments to the pedestal stand, ball-and-sock arm assembly, and wall-mount bracket, as well as the optional speaker stands.
Applications: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 satellite loudspeaker can be used in a stereo or home theater application; they sound great for both music and movie soundtracks. Use a pair of M-1 satellite loudspeakers to create an unobtrusive 2ch stereo speaker system, five M-1 satellite speakers to build a 5ch home theater speaker system, or use a pair of M1 satellite loudspeakers as rear surrounds with large B&W loudspeakers up front in a home theater application. You can even use multiple M1 satellite speakers in a distributed audio application.
- In a distributed audio application, the M-1 speaker is typically mounted more than 8' high on the wall and angled down.
- For stereo applications, a pair of M-1 speakers should be mounted as close to ear level as possible or angled to point at ear level of the main seated listening position. The M-1 speakers should also be angled between 40- and 60-degrees at the main listening position.
- In a home theater application, the front left and right speaker should be as close to the center of the screen as possible and equal distant from sides of the TV and the main listening position. The center speaker can be positioned above or below the screen; whichever is closed to ear level. The surround speakers are best placed at least 2' above ear level and at a 120-degree angle behind the main listening area.
Optional Powered Sub: Add a Bowers & Wilkins powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) for bigger, deeper bass response.
