Another winning headphone from Bowers & Wilkins

If you've ever heard the Bowers & Wilkins P5 or P3 headphones, you've experienced their incredibly smooth sound as well as their luxurious fit and design. But perhaps you prefer a larger headphone that blocks out more noise. In that case, you'll want to check out the Bowers & Wilkins P7. These equally stylish headphones are more effective at keeping the outside world at bay by fitting completely over your ears. That keeps more noise out so you get more of those musical details that these headphones deliver with precision, balance, and just the right amount of punch.

Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones

Gorgeous looks designed for fashion and function

Like its little brothers, the P7's design is impeccable. With soft leather covering the rectangular earcups and headbands, these 'phones offer long-lasting comfort while being tough enough to withstand everyday wear and tear. In between each earcup and the headband glistens a stainless steel hinge, which allows you to fold the headphones up for storage in the supplied case. So even though the P7 may be larger than the P5 and P3, it's no less portable. They'll definitely turn a few heads when you wear them on the plane or in the office.

Take calls and control music with the built-in remote

If you own an iPod®, iPhone®, or iPad®, you'll make fast friends with the P7's built-in remote and microphone. The three-button remote lets you control music playback and skip tracks while also letting you make easy volume adjustments. If you have an iPhone, you can also answer calls with the remote while the built-in microphone picks up your voice. Naturally, calls will sound crystal clear through the headphones. And their noise-isolating design means it won't be a struggle to hear the person you're talking to.

Removable earpads let you swap cables

Don't own an Apple® device? You can always swap out the installed remote cable for the standard one included with the P7. The earpads, held securely in place by magnets, pull off with just a little effort, granting access to the miniplug connector in the left earpiece.

From our Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones review:

Often when I'm reviewing headphones, it takes me a little while to warm up to their sound. I'm used to my own headphones, and anything different requires some time for me to adjust to their tonal signature. But I liked the P7 immediately. I found their sound to be very neutral and uncolored, with particular smoothness in the high and low frequencies.

great sound but like others the fit is a little too snug.

Excellent quality and value for price.

Michael from Lake City, FL on 11/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace a set of Sennheiser HD545 that were wearing out (after 20 years). I originally ordered a set of HD599 from Crutchfield, but they were not as good as my older 545s, IMO. I sent them back and ordered the B&W P7. I can say that I am now pleased. They are sonically better than my old 545s: not Stax electrostatic clarity, but not several thousand dollars, either. More like a pair of B&W loudspeakers. These B&Ws have an "old school" feel. That is, closed around the ear and on the snug side of tight. However they wear well and are not oppressive. Again, well balanced sound. Fit and finish are A+ --much better than the Sennheiser 599. As in the past, Crutchfield service was first rate.

Pros: High quality fit and finish. Well balanced sound.

Cons: Cord looks a little flimsy, but is user replaceable. Cords always need replacing on headphones after a few years of use.

Addictive Sound!!

LongTimeHeadphoneLover from South River, NJ on 9/27/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Some people on will say B&W P7 is a mid-fi headphone with fun tuning, meaning V shaped sound characteristic - bigger bass & treble compared to recessed mid. Well.. I personally typically do not like a V shaped sound profile - but not with this baby. B&W P& just sounds just so darn good!! It may be classified as a mid-fi, but P7 scales very well with sources. To my ears, it sounds better than Senn HD600, AKG K712, Ultrasone pro 750, Bayer DT770 Anniversary edition, Senn Momentum 2.0, etc. HD600 and K712 may offer more resolution than P7, but I'm "enjoying" the overall everything P7 offers than those two venerable cans. Please note that I think P7 is designed to be used with mobile sources in mind (iphone, ipad, etc), but to see how great it is you need to plug it to a better source. A dedicated headphone amp will make this baby shine. Even cheap Dragonfly dongle will make a big difference. However, one of the true strength of P7 is the fact it still sounds so darn good with less materials and less capable sources. Spotify on my phone never sounded this good!! However, all the praises out the door - I do have a small issue with my refurnished P7 that I'm deeply considering whether to keep it or pay more to get a brand new P7 instead.

Pros: Love the sound - it's very easy to enjoy sound with so many difference sources.

Cons: For my big head - it's not that comfortable.

The Real Deal

Crutchfield customer from Honolulu, HI on 8/29/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sparkling, full frequency sound. The over ear is superior in natural noise cancellation, if not still a touch tight on my XL head. The lower spectrum can drive at a meduim+ volume range, but don't expect the trunk rattling 808 style drop bass that you'll get out of a pair of Beats - these are much more sophisticated in their sonic range and far far superior in clarity. The imaging handles sophisticated production beautifully, and the dynamic range is B+ when there's no outside noise competition. They're really great.

Crutchfield customer from Philadelphia, PA on 8/16/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for listening to classical music and music with a lot of vocals. I can tell that the sound is clearer and more balanced than any other over the ear headphones or in-ear earbuds that I've gotten for less than this price. I am not certain that it is the best pair of headphones in this price range for all types of music, so do your research (preferably try it on) because you buy. The main reason I picked these over others is because I tried them at an apple store and they were by far the most comfortable headphones I've ever tried on (I have average-to-small ears). No issues whatsoever with the refurbished version so far.

Bowers & Wilkins P7

Mitch from Urbandale, IA on 7/25/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As everyone else has said, just because these are refurbished doesn't make them any worse than a brand new pair. You are better off buying these and saving the money for something, considering these seem brand new. As far as sound goes, these are an amazing pair of headphones. The sound is wide open and clear. Bass is present but doesn't dirty the rest of the music. I could not be happier with the way these perform sound wise. My main issue with these headphones is that they can become quite uncomfortable. They clamp your head pretty hard. After listening for 30 min to an hour, your ears and top of your head will become quite hot and may even hurt a little. Usually a simple readjustment solves this issue but that is not always the case. If these were more comfortable to wear, they would absolutely be my favorite headphones, but the way they hold on to your head is a serious drawback. Besides that, they also let in a good amount of background noise. This isn't a major problem but I can understand why some people would want more isolation from these closed-back headphones. Despite this, they do a great job of not leaking music. Even when music is being played very loudly, they won't leak any music when you're wearing them. Overall, I am happy with this purchase and plan on keeping them, but they can only be used for shorter periods of time and are not something that I would wear unless I am in a situation where music can't be leaking.

Pros: Great sound, doesn't leak music - even at high volumes

Cons: Let's in a lot of sound from surroundings, becomes very uncomfortable very quickly

Cons: The inner shape of the ear cushions take a bit of getting used to, but even my big ears are doing just fine with it.

Save $$, Go B&W Refurb

John W. from Durango, CO on 6/15/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let's get the "refurbished" part out of the way first. I doubt there is any way I could tell these from brand new P7s. Others have said it but it bears repeating - the only way to know for sure is the label on the box. Everything else - top notch and in perfect condition. Now for the rest. I am moving up from B&W P5s and yes the sound quality is better in the P7s. I am not smart enough to know exactly why, but I do know that over-the-ear vs. on-the-ear helps. I don't hear things I have never heard before with the P7s, but I do hear things more clearly, more deeply. I'm sure isolation from ambient noise is part of the reason. The very afternoon I got them I plugged them into my iPhone, started listening to the beautiful sound, and kept the TV on (I have a theater setup with all B&W speakers and like it loud). I could only hear the television between songs. I could see people speaking on screen and couldn't hear a muffled word or syllable until the iPhone music paused. So these block a lot of ambient noise. And finally, the only reason my review is not 5 stars across the board is that my left ear does get sore after about an hour. A simple adjustment takes care of that, but it might mean these aren't go-to-sleep phones for cross-country or transatlantic flights. All in all, a huge value and highly recommended.

Pros: - Outstanding sound - Very good noise reduction/isolation without noise-cancelling tech - Solid build quality and excellent materials - Price/value is outstanding

Cons: - Just a bit uncomfortable on one ear after a long wearing - Less portable than B&W P5s, which fold flat - I'm not sure what "coolness factor" is, but I suspect these are a bit too big and clunky for coolness

B&W P7

D-Man from Pittsford, NY on 5/6/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looked far and wide at the entire B&W offerings: P3 - nice, P5 - very nice, but not comfortable for me over 30 min. P7 - Exceptional sound - smooth and true, very comfortable for long listens. Definitely getting even better with burn-in - very happy with this purchase - I bought refurbished and cannot tell from new and saved $80. Not thrilled with making phone calls with these on. Your own voice sounds muffled and distant - I am thinking this has more to do with the fact that these are over the ear and passively muffling your ears. It's mildly distracting.

Pros: Excellent Sound, natural, not boomy. Beautiful fit and finish! All in all a very reasonable price point, for this level of quality!

Cons: See review above

One of the best headphones

Ali-G from Ashburn, VA on 3/21/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

B&W P7 are one of the best headphones out there. I finally settled on B&W P7 after trying out Beoplay H6, Sony MDR1A and Sennheiser HD598. These headphones are great with each has their strength and weaknesses. Not sure if you call weaknesses as this is where personal opinion kicks in. B&W P7 and BeoPlay H6 are fairly close to each other.

Pros: Great flat sound with nicely controlled low freq. Built quality is top notch. Passive noise reduction...etc.

Cons: Price?

Audiophile quality at a fraction of the cost other brands demand...

Pigeonhed from Fayetteville, NC on 2/14/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I needed a solution for when the mood to listen to music at high volumes strikes me at 1000 pm on a work night, the family is asleep, and cranking up my living room music system is not an option. When I upgraded my home system a while back, I narrowed my speaker choices down to a few brands; among those were Martin Logan and B&W. I went with ML and have not been disappointed. But this time, I decided to try B&W to give the storied brand a shot. Having a quality home system that I love, I knew the sound of any headphones I purchased would have to be stellar to keep my interest. I have to say, these headphones are worth every penny. After spending some quality time with them, I now know that I would have ponied up the full price for a non-refurbished pair if this option didn't exist. Detail, clarity, imaging... it is all there and spot on. These headphones coax sounds you have never noticed out of quality recordings and will make you give songs you have heard a hundred times a second look. The tone is non-fatiguing, yet powerful and exciting. Unlike some headphone brands that over emphasize certain frequencies, the P7s faithfully reproduce exactly what the artist intended for you to hear. If you are looking for a pair of headphones that accurately capture the sound of a song the way that it was intended to be heard, give these a serious look. For the bargain price listed here, you cannot go wrong.

Pros: They look beautiful and elegant, sound amazing, and can be had at a great price since they are refurbished. But don't let that fact bother you. If the box had not said "factory refurbished", I would not have known the difference.

Cons: If noise canceling is high on your list of considerations, these headphones will probably disappoint. They certainly block ambient noise, but I would not classify them in the noise canceling category. I was fine with that however, as my main focus was fidelity and musicality.

Bowers & Wilkins P7 (Factory Refurbished)

David S from Arizona on 1/17/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound of these headphones is fantastic. As a refurbished product, it cannot be distinguished from brand new. They are flawless. They look and feel like a high end product. Comfort is excellent. As closed back phones, I did expect more sound isolation, but it is not a major issue.

Pros: Sound quality, comfort, materials, fit and finish.

Cons: Noise isolation could be a little better, but sound quality makes up for it.

Superb Headphones

TimB from Missouri on 1/5/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones are really good. Being a refurbished product mean you get headphones rebuilt to a new state at a discounted price. The fit and finish of these headphones are just like getting a new set of cans. The B&W P7's sound detailed and warm. The frequency range is nicely represented. The low end is pronounced but not to the point were it interferes with the midrange. The lows add great body and weight to the sound. The highs add clarity and brings it all together. These headphones are very comfortable to wear. The clamping force is strong but not overly so. Give them some time to loosen up. To me it helps with sound isolation so I don't mind. I'm using my B&W P7's with a CEntrance HiFi-M8. This thing may just be the best portable amp out there and the combination sounds so good. But back to the headphones. You can't go wrong buying these. At this price you won't find better headphones. They are also very portable and come with a nice leather carrying case. If you're looking for a nice set of headphones don't hesitate pick these up.

Pros: Sound, looks, build quality and comfort

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

B&W P7 sounds awesome. Like its speaker, it has a warm smooth sound. it sounds great even connecting to iphone directly. It sounds even better when I use it with oppo HA-2 dac.

Pros: P7 has a warm smooth sound. The bass is good but not overpower.

Cons: P7 has horrible clamping force when it is new. It is reduces with use.

Great sound, very comfortable

Eric from Seattle on 7/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Primary use is to watch movies. Sound is excellent, and after two hours on the head, no discomfort at all. They are light and soft feeling. Truly a pleasure.

Pros: Light weight, soft on the head. Extreme comfort. Very good sound. Look pretty good, too.

Cons: Spendy, but if you can afford it, well worth the price.

Refurbished is as good as new

DCer from the Washington, DC Area on 7/27/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I took a risk and bought the refurb model. Glad I did. The headphones were in pristine condition-no signs of prior use at all. The only noticeable difference between the refurbished and brand new P7s seems to be that the refurbished version comes in a simple white box instead of the sexy black box. I don't know about you, but for an extra $80 B&W can keep their box! Might not be as good as a gift, but for really any other case, the refurbished P7s seem to be as good as the brand-new $400 cans. It almost goes without saying that these sound superb. The build quality is unmatched at this price point, particularly for the refurb model. I'm not audiophile, but I think most people can appreciate the subtlety and clarity that these headphones bring to almost any genre of music. As for comfort: I initially found the P7s to be very uncomfortable-I actually considered returning them. After carefully but firmly stretching out the crown and letting them break in for about a week, they became much more comfortable. I can now easily wear them for 3-4 hours.

Pros: Beautiful sound, beautiful looks

Cons: Uncomfortable at first; not particularly portable

Top notch headphones

C reyes from Tehachapi, CA on 5/3/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome headphones they sound great and look cool. I like the way they feel around my head they are tight but not uncomfortable, I like when I raise the volume the noise doesn't get distorted or how the bass doesn't start muffling, most headphones can only take so much but these seem to dish out whatever music I throw out at it, and I like the way they look, they look expensive they look like they belong in there own category. The beats which are great headphones sorry but look cheap these by far look anywhere but that.

Pros: Great sound great look really comfortable

Cons: Price, but you get what you pay for

Product Research

Overview: The Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) P7 over-ear (circum-aural) headphones are manufactured of the finest materials for ultimate performance. With fine leather earcups and headband, stainless steel frame and folding mechanism, and brushed aluminum logo plates, the P7s are both stylish and comfortable for long listening sessions. The headphones come with interchangeable cables, a 1/4" adapter plug, and a soft padded leather pouch.

Earcups and Drivers: The P7 headphones feature 40mm dynamic drivers that work more like a drive unit in a hi-fi speaker. The removable magnetic earpads feature a dual cushioned design that help the pads mold to the listener's head, and keeps the distance between the drive unit and the surface of the ear consistent. This enhances stereo imaging as well as optimizes the sound for every listener. The over-ear design helps shut out external noise.

Folding Design: The headphones have a hinged design that allows you to fold in each earcup for compact storage. They fold like a pair of sunglasses and can be stored in the included padded leather pouch. The pouch is small enough to slide into a briefcase or backpack.

Cables: The B&W P7 headphones come with two 54" interchangeable cables, including one with an in-line microphone and remote that works with your iPhone. The headphone cable has a unique curved terminal on the headphone end that plugs in under the left earcup. The 2.5mm sub-mini plug rests in a contoured jack to protect the terminal and prevents accidental disconnection. A spare cable, without the mic/remote, is supplied. The 3.5mm miniplug features a slim metal connector (just over 1/4" in diameter) that allows you to plug into your portable music device, even when it's housed in a hard protective case. A 1/4" plug adapter is included to allow you to use the headphones with home hi-fi components.

Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad: The in-line mic/remote on the headphone cable is certified to work with Apple i-devices. The 3-button remote can control volume with the two outer buttons and playback with the center button. A single click of the center button will answer or hang up a phone call, and toggle between pause and play. Two quick clicks will skip the playback to the next song, while three quick clicks skips back to the beginning of the currently playing song. The remote and mic are supported by iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, iPod touch (2nd generation or later), iPod classic (120 GB, 60 GB), and iPod nano (4th generation or later). The remote is also supported by iPod shuffle (3rd generation or later). Audio is supported by all iPad and iPod models.
