The best just got better

I've reviewed both the original Zeppelin and the Zeppelin Air — and was impressed by both. So I was glad to have a chance to check out the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless. As expected, I found it to be an advancement over the previous versions, with upgraded speakers, electronics, and wireless options.

B&W Zeppelin Wireless

Audiophile-quality sound

The Zeppelin Wireless' distinctive shape isn't just for show — it's designed to hold left and right tweeters and midrange speakers as far apart as possible, angled for optimal sound dispersion. The thick center holds a 6” long-throw woofer that delivers low frequencies with accuracy.

The Zeppelin Wireless' casing is 50% thicker than previous models, virtually eliminating vibration to ensure clean, accurate sound. Each of the five speakers is also powered by its own Class D amplifier, optimizing responsiveness. And the high-performance digital signal processor delivers a clean, accurate signal to those speakers.

High-fidelity Bluetooth

The system features aptX® audio coding, an advanced type of Bluetooth wireless streaming that retains virtually all the detail of the audio signal it carries. The Zeppelin Wireless is also compatible with AAC Bluetooth, which enhances the quality of transmission from compatible devices such as Apple portables.

And if your Bluetooth device doesn't have aptX or use AAC Bluetooth, don't worry.  The system is backwards-compatible with earlier forms of Bluetooth. So you can wirelessly stream your music from almost any portable device and still enjoy great sound.

Best overall combo of style, sound, and usability [of the speakers we tested]. If you're an audiophile or an Apple user, get this one. I would.

Dave Brown, A/V Writer and Editor, from our article Best of the Best Bluetooth speakers

Apple AirPlay

The Zeppelin Wireless also has Apple AirPlay technology built in. This lets you wirelessly connect your iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch® or computer running iTunes® to the system via your Wi-Fi® network. You can also stream audio from your Apple portable directly to the Zeppelin Wireless. Use your Apple portable as a remote to make selections, as well as adjust volume. (Requires Apple's free Remote app.)

Spotify Connect and more

You can also enjoy the convenience of Spotify Connect with the Zeppelin Wireless. Spotify Connect lets you play Spotify's streaming music library through your system via your smartphone or tablet (requires Spotify app and a premium subscription).

Want more? You can also play music from other portable devices through the system's stereo minijack input.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Yes, the Zeppelin Wireless lives up to the hype! I wanted an additional wireless speaker so I could stop lagging my old Samsung DA-E670 from the bedroom to the living room. I researched various speakers for over a year. I wanted to buy a high quality speaker and get the most for my money. Time and again the Zeppelin was mentioned as being one of the best. (unless you're willing to spend double the money or more) So, I bit the bullet and ordered it. This speaker is really tremendous and worth every penny paid. I have a 450 square foot living room with vaulted ceiling and it feels the room with great-sounding, well-balanced music. It especially shines when playing jazz, but every genera sounds great! The wireless connection occasionally drops, but I'm pretty sure that has more to do with my provider and family of 5 that streams everything, than with the speaker itself. Bluetooth and Apple Airplay work great. I'm very happy with this purchase and Crutchfield's exceptional service. Highly recommended!

Pros: Compact and beautiful design. Great highs, lows and midrange for such a small speaker.

Cons: Occasionally looses network connection when playing through wifi.

This is a great product. I wouldn't expect anything from B & W. THE SETUP IS Easy and the speaker sounds great. This is such a good speaker I am thinking of purchasing another one for the living room

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An incredible and fantastic product which was overshadowed by the awesome support I received from the Crutchfield team. I'm using it connected to my Alexa via bluetooth and doesn't skip a beat.

Pros: Simply put looks and sounds fantastic.

Cons: No remote to turn on or off considering the position of the power button.

B&W Zeppelin powered wireless speaker

Paul from Mesquite, TX on 4/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Zeppelin. I bought one when they first were introduced with the old 30-pin connector. Never used it as an iPhone dock, but streamed AirPlay from my Mac and phone. I had connection issues from time to time and whenever my network was down or we lost power, it was a pain to get it connected again. It also failed and had to be sent for service (which was excellent by the way). The second time it failed, I took a chance on the newest model and did so with confidence due to Crutchfield's 60-day return policy. I can tell you I have had no issues with AirPlay, Bluetooth sounds fine, but I don't really use it, and I already had a Spotify Premium account and Spotify Connect is awesome. Recently we lost power and of course the network, and the Zep reconnected on its own with no issues, so I give connectivity A+. I find there is a little less bass even though the woofer is larger than the previous model, but there are no longer bass ports on the back. Bass is not as big an issue to me as balanced and clear sound as I listen primarily to classical, jazz and progressive rock.

Pros: Great connectivity, clear and balanced sound, stylish

Cons: None at this time

B&W Zeppelin powered wireless

Crutchfield customer from Urbana, IL on 12/31/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had high hopes for the Zeppelin. I went with one of the best-rated wireless speaker solutions to do it right and be done with it. But I was disappointed. Sound quality is fine. I really wanted two-speaker, separated stereo channels, but gave up on that hoping that the Zeppelin would produce room-filling sound. It does produce good quality, _loud_ sound, but localized, so that it sounds like it's coming out of a box. I could perhaps have lived with that, but the wireless connection was not reliable. I tried every permutation of router configuration and position, but never found a solution to persistent drop-outs. In addition to dropping out for a second every few minutes, the Zeppelin would sometimes lose the connection entirely and spontaneously reboot. On occasion, it would continue playing but no longer respond to changing the speaker source on the computer. I've returned it.

Simply the Best!

I have the generation before. With every new version they improve on an awesome product. The price may scare you but it's worth every cent! And it lasts. I have a powered Audio Technical turntable hooked into it. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and my friends wonder where the stereo system is with the big speakers

Pros: Incredible sound...nothing comes close

Cons: None...except B&W making a sound bar at this price point

Scott from Rockville Centre, NY on 12/3/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent mid range and high frequency. Bass, however is not nearly as strong as the Zepplin Air (which I also have) because they eliminated the two ports for the lower frequency sound. Imaging and separation of mids and highs is better than Zepplin Air but if you like bass heavy music like rap/hip hop this does not deliver the goods on the bass like the Zeppkin Air does.

Great sound but occaisionally makes a loud cracking noise during play via Bluetooth. Have not used airplay, Bluetooth only. Overall satisfied with purchase.

Pros: Terrific sound Nice looking speaker

The Greatest Gift Ever

Neville from Providence, RI on 10/24/2016

I had the smaller zeppelin (the Z2), and then it died on me. I thought I'd get it fixed under the warranty, but I couldn't find the receipt. B&W graciously offered to replace the Z2 with the Zeppelin wireless for a discounted price. I jumped at it. And holy god are these amazing!! The sound is detailed. You have crisp highs, spatial mids, and the warmest of the warmest lows. You can hear everything! Crank it up all the way, and you still hear everything, with minimal distortion. If you want to give yourself the ultimate treat, grab a live recording and play it. If you close yours eyes, you can't help but be transported to another dimension. The bluetooth, and wireless connectivity is easy to set up, and flawless to use. I use this on a university network and it works perfectly.

Pros: -Everything -Good connectivity -Brilliant Sound -Great service

Cons: -None. While the price may seem a bit too much, these are worth every cent, and in comparison to B&W competitors, these kick major butt

easy set-up, even easier to put back in the box

marc from Chicago, IL on 10/23/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After extensive research, I decided to purchase the Zeppelin as a wired speaker replacement. The set up was extremely simple but the sound quality was similar to a giant portable radio. I put it back in the box immediately and am returning it. My Crutchfield salesperson was very friendly and enthusiastic about this product, but that won't make my music sound as good as my circa 1989 Kenwood speakers and amp.

LarryB from Atlanta, GA on 10/3/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this speaker. Initially , I didn't want to spend the money, but now I'm glad I did. I have this speaker on a very low cabinet at one end of a long, rectangular LR/DR (12x30). The goal was to fill the room with music at a low volume level for entertaining, and that's exactly what the B&W Zeppelin does--with excellent clarity and presence. For critical listening, I prefer my floorstanding Polks. Setup couldn't have been easier--everything's Mac here.

Pros: Quality of sound Ease of setup Better sound and MUCH easier setup than Sonos

Cons: None

Amazing clarity of sound!

Paul from Huntington NY on 8/2/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound reproduction is good via wifi and my ipad. It does cut out at times, but that is due to my wifi signal not the Zeppelin. The sound quality is even better with my ipod and the 3.5mm wire provided by Zeppelin. Streamed music is also of good quality, with the same issue of wi-fi cut out.

Pros: Compact design, great sound, ease of set up.

Cons: Losing bits of songs with weak wi-fi signal.

Fantastic AirPlay speaker

Anton from Baltimore, MD on 6/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sound, quite powerful for the size, heavy and nice looking unit. I'm mostly using the AirPlay feature, didn't use the BlueTooth at all. Very easy to setup, either for Wifi or Wired only. In my case, I have the whole house wired so I turned off the Wifi on the unit. I use it either from my iPhone or in combination with other AirPlay systems (Yamaha R-N 500 and a Denon 5.1 receiver). Using all 3 at the same time with iTunes works very well.

Pros: Look Overall sound quality Ease of setup

Cons: I'm not sure this is AirPlay or the Zeppelin issue but when my laptop is on and iTunes was configured to use the Zeppelin, I can't just take over from my iPhone. I have to first de-activate AirPlay from my laptop and then turn AirPlay on my iPhone. I can't recall having this problem with my other AirPlay devices.

Best in class connectivity

D Smith from San Diego, CA on 6/16/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me give a brief history of my experiences with wireless speakers. The first one I bought (at a warehouse discount club) was easy to connect via Bluetooth, but I didn't think it produced the sound I hoped for. Then I ordered online a top name speaker that pumped out the sound level that I was looking for, and it, too, was easy to connect via Bluetooth. However, it was a bit too boomy in the bass, so I continued to search. Found a great deal online for another top name speaker that listed wireless stereo capability with two speakers. I loved the sound, but found connectivity issues required a bit of patience. However, once connected, it was great. Still not satisfied, I purchased the Zeppelin wireless. Bingo! Easy to connect, and great sound quality, too. Sound is important since I love classical music. The Zeppelin offers a pleasing sound quality that accurately represents the instruments of the orchestra in small and large ensembles. Enough bass to give the foundation for music, but not boomy. It's not perfect - bottom frequency response is 40 Hz, which is about an octave shy of normal hearing range; however, it is more than suitable for my listening. I'm sure it will be the same for many others who want to hear music clearly and without thumping bass. I certainly recommend it.

Pros: Nice design. Easy to connect to other devices. Great sound quality.

Cons: Somewhat larger than other speakers, but more than acceptable for a unit that houses 5 drivers. Sound stage it presents is rather limited, since there isn't much separation between left and right in this configuration.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound and ease of use for this wonderful product. I had a previous "Zeppelin Air" which I still own but the latest and greatest is even better. Bowers and Wilkens has made a superior product.

Pros: Great sound and ease of use

Cons: Not a thing I can think of unless its trying to put it back in the carrying case as the styrofoam blocks are not marked well enough to facilitate just putting it back.

I expected a lot. I have owned B&W speakers for many years including a first generation Zeppelin. The new Zeppelin Wireless is incredibly solid sounding. You can crank up the volume without worrying about distortion. Bluetooth connects seamlessly. I'm hearing nuances in my favorite music that I didn't know was there. Amazing product. (And it arrived on time as promised from Crutchfield.)

Pros: Sound. Ease of use. Sound. Cool looks. Sound.

Cons: None so far.

2.1Ch Discrete Audio: The Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless features a 2.1ch speaker design with five speakers individually driven by dedicated class-D amplifiers totaling 150 watts. The high frequencies are handled by a pair of 1" double dome tweeters, while midrange frequencies are provided by two 3.5" FST (Fixed Suspension Transducer) cone drivers; each tweeter & midrange driver is powered by a discrete 25 watt amplifier. A single 6" woofer driven by a dedicated 50 watt amp delivers deep bass sound.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): Zeppelin Wireless speaker's proprietary Bowers & Wilkins Digital Signal Processing (DSP) using double-precision processing and in-house algorithms optimizes speaker control. Simply put, this means Zeppelin Wireless performs like a considerably larger loudspeaker and produces room filling, controlled bass no matter how loud you like your music.

Wireless & Wired Network Connection: The Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless supports wired (Ethernet) and wireless (WiFi) network connectivity, so you can access AirPlay for Apple iOS devices & your iTunes account on your Windows PC or Mac computer; plus Spotify Connect for Apple iOS devices & Android smartphones/tablets.

  • Built-in WiFi: The Zeppelin Wireless is equipped with built-in WiFi for a wireless network connection. The Zeppelin Wireless is compatible with the 802.11a/b/g/n IEEE WiFi standards, as well as 2.4Ghz/5Ghz bands. WEP and WPA/WPA2 personal encryptions are supported. You will need a computer with an Ethernet jack and access to the internet to open a dedicated web browser ( in order to setup this type of hardwired connection.

B&W Control App: With the B&W Control app, it's simple to set up the Zeppelin Wireless, manage your settings, and control what's playing from your Apple iOS (7.0+) device, Windows PC, or Mac computer. The Bowers & Wilkins Control app is not available to download on Android devices. Android users can either setup the Zeppelin Wireless via the Mac or PC version of the Control app, or via the dedicated web browser for Mac or PC.

AirPlay: Apple's AirPlay technology allows music, downloaded to iTunes, to be streamed wirelessly from your Mac or PC to the Zeppelin Wireless. You can even bypass the computer entirely, and wirelessly stream high-quality audio directly from your Apple iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. The Zeppelin Wireless even supports Apple Lossless audio file transfer. The Zeppelin Wireless and your AirPlay audio source must be connected to the same wireless network via a WiFi (802.11g/n) router or hub.

  • iTunes Streaming: The B&W Zeppelin Wireless is able to play audio from your computer's iTunes account either wirelessly (WiFi) or via a wired (Ethernet) connection using AirPlay streaming technology. When connected to the same network as a computer running iTunes, the Zeppelin Wireless can appear as an output option in the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window. You can then browse your iTunes collection on your computer and stream music to the Zeppelin Wireless. To use the Zeppelin Wireless AirPlay feature you need a Mac (OS X Mountain Lion - up) computer or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.2.2 or later) connected to the same wireless (WiFi) network.
  • Apple Device Streaming: AirPlay also lets you wirelessly stream music and music apps stored on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to the Zeppelin Wireless. So there's no need to dock your Apple device, unless you want to charge it. By downloading Apple's free Remote app onto your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad you don't even need to be in the same room as the components or your computer to play, pause, skip, and stop the songs in your iTunes music library. The Zeppelin Wireless AirPlay feature works with iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad with iOS 4.3.3 or later - connected to the same wireless network. The Zeppelin Wireless will require a firmware update for Apple iOS (9.0+) devices.
  • Multi-Room Streaming: If you have more than one Zeppelin Wireless, you can use them in an multi-room system. You can play the same music soundtrack from your computer's iTunes account on every Zeppelin Wireless in your home or select which Zeppelin Wireless you want to listen to from your computer. You are able to control basic playback functions like Volume Up/Down, Play/Pause, & Previous/Next Track from the Zeppelin Wireless. Advanced navigation and song/artist information will still be done from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

  • SBC, AAC, & aptX: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Zeppelin Wireless offers support for AAC & aptX codecs for higher quality audio streaming from select Apple & Android devices. By supporting AAC, the Zeppelin Wireless offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad. aptX audio coding technology provides even better sound quality with lossless, CD-quality streaming for compatible aptX-compatible smartphones, like many Android smartphones with OS 4.0+.
  • Multi-Device Pairing: You can pair up to 8 devices with the Zeppelin Wireless, but only one device can be active at a time. The Zeppelin Wireless will automatically connect to the last connected audio source device if the two are brought within range (up to 33') of one another, even if another paired device is also within range.
Note: The Zeppelin Wireless will wake from standby mode when a Bluetooth connection is made, but will not switch from an active stream to the Bluetooth audio device until an audio stream is initiated on the Bluetooth audio device.

Aux Input: The rear-panel stereo minijack (3.5mm) input allows you to listen to an external analog audio device that has a headphone jack or analog audio output. The Zeppelin Wireless will select its Aux input automatically when a cable is inserted and deselect the input when the cable is removed. When the Zeppelin Wireless is playing back another source, it will detect audio activity on the AUX input and switch to this input automatically.

Top-Panel Controls: On the top of Zeppelin Wireless are the volume and playback controls. These can be used to raise or lower the volume, to play or pause a music stream and to select the next or previous track. The Zeppelin Wireless is designed to be simple and convenient in operation and will automatically play the most recent audio stream or input signal it receives. There is no need to manually select sources or the AUX input.

LED Indicator: A status indicator is located within the Bowers & Wilkins logo on the front of the Zeppelin Wireless. The status indicator changes color and illumination pattern to indicate different operational states. The Zeppelin Wireless also provides some audible feedback during Bluetooth pairing and connection.

AC Power: The Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless speaker operates off of standard household current (100-240V; 50/60Hz) using its built-in power supply and detachable AC power cord. This speaker is not battery powered.

Auto Standby:  If there is no signal or operation for approximately 20 minutes, the Zeppelin Wireless will automatically switch to standby mode. It can be switched back on by pressing the power button.

Mounting Options: The B&W Zeppelin Wireless speaker can simply be placed on a flat table-top surface, like a shelf, desk, stand, or end-table. The speaker can also be wall mounted using Bowers & Wilkins' proprietary wall-mount bracket (sold separately).

Firmware Updates: Firmware updates may from time to time be available for the Zeppelin Wireless. Firmware update notifications, download, and installation is managed using the Bowers & Wilkins Control app for Apple iOS, Windows PC, or Mac.

I personally do not own the Sonos. However I do own the Bang & Olufsen Beolit 15, as well as the Peachtree DeepBlue 2. I must say that compared to these two speakers the Bowers & Wilkins is my favorite. [ JOHN M  May 29, 2016 ]

I have no experience at all with the Yamaha, sorry. We have been very happy with the Zeppelin, however. [ Brent  Mar 03, 2016 ]
They are two different products in a sense. The NX N500's are two individual speakers that can be separated and placed in spots where you might need them. The Zeppelin is much more portable and can't be staged nearly as well. However, the sound is very comparable to the Yamaha's. [ Terry  Mar 03, 2016 ]
Sorry, can't give you an opinion as I haven't heard the Yamaha. This sounds excellent, don't hesitate to get it! Its sound fuller than the previous model and has better connectivity. [ JOSE  Mar 03, 2016 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Krissy  Mar 02, 2016 ]  Staff
