Very easy to set up. The 'radios' are very powerful. My coverage with only one is much better than my old D-Link system. Two combined as a mesh system provides seamless coverage throughout the house.

I wasn't able to set this up the way I wanted because I was told there was no way to set a static IP address. Customer support did take that as a suggestion for a future enhancement, but I was left with having to set it up in bridge mode. There were a couple of hitches in the automated setup process but once I got past that the system seems to be working very well. I now have no WiFi weak spots in my house.

Well worth the money

Crutchfield customer from Dublin, OH on 2/18/2019

If you are router-illiterate like me, this is the product for you. You put an app on your phone or tablet, and it walks you through everything step-by-step. Very easy! As for performance, I am very happy. My media room is at one end of the house, and my bedroom is all the way at the other end, so good coverage from a single router was impossible, and extenders suck. I have the primary node at one end of the house on the second floor, the second node is down one floor and another 30 horizontal feet away, and the third is 30 more feet away from the second. I now have super strong and seamless WiFi coverage everywhere, including the patio and garage. It's pricey, but worth every penny.

Pros: Easy set-up and configuration

Cons:

Needed this to strengthen the wifi in my house for Bluesound. They advertise 1 node can support 2000 sq. ft. - BUT - in the set up they advise adding another if there are 2 walls or more. If your modem is on one side of the house you will need more than advertised. I have 3000 sq. ft. and will need 3. The blue sound streamer shows a signal strength of fair-good. My computers/ipads/phones are incredibly fast now. Music streamers need stronger wifi.

Pros: does the job, very easy set up

Cons: You need more than they advertise. It becomes costly.

I've been fighting poor single and speed trying different extenders, access points and every other available option. These have fixed all my limited connection issues. My home is all home automation and many devices between me and the kids. No streaming issues and it self selects best band and best node to connect you to. You just connect and go. It does rest for you.

Great Wi-Fi Coverage

The set up on this system wasn't exactly straight forward and required some additional re-setting of some of the towers but after everything was completed, seems to be working quite well. The Wi-Fi range in my home has increased substantially and my son is very happy with the performance of his PlayStation now. Still in the testing phase but everything looks pretty good right now.

Pros: Complete System with outstanding Wi-Fi range

Cons: A bit quirky setting up via the phone app

Solid coverage but some configuration limitations

Daniel from Alpharetta, GA on 7/16/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Overall, Velop is a great solution for simple home networks and, with a separate 5GHz backhaul channel, one of the best hardware implementations. Here's why it doesn't get 5 stars: - limited feature set in bridge mode (i.e. parental controls, device prioritization, speed check, etc. do NOT work in bridge mode) - guest mode does not work when using Ethernet backhaul (devices that connect to child nodes cannot obtain an IP address) - app is limited, for example, if you need to have different names for each Wi-Fi band, you have to use the web control panel - web control panel is simplistic, the usual granular settings you might expect on a Linksys router are not available - on boot or reboot, the Velop does not select the least busy channels, you have to run channel finder separately - simple configuration changes require a reboot (e.g. guest mode on/off or unplug child node from Ethernet)

Pros: 1. attractive design 2. hardware seems solid; mesh seems to work well 3. separate 5GHz backhaul channel with the tri-band version 4. auto updates firmware

Cons: 1. feature set limited in bridge mode 2. web control panel is very rudimentary 3. does not auto select the best channels 4. wired backhaul is not supported well

Real improvement! So glad I did this. Read all of the reviews of all of the brands. which can get confusing. At some point, you just have to buy one of them....just make sure you buy from Crutchfield!

Pros: 1. Good connectivity 2. I like the dashboard

Cons: 1. Only a little hitch in the set up due to Bluetooth connectivity...make sure the unit is close to your device! Otherwise, no issues.

Works as advertised

Jose J from Caguas, PR on 3/6/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used to have a setup of one Cisco Linksys E4200 router and two TP-LINK TL-WA850RE N300 extenders. The Wi-Fi signal degraded noticeably with distance. I read about the Linksys Velop mesh system and decided to try it. Installation was easy, but it takes a while for 3 nodes (about 20 minutes, most of which you spend waiting for each node to set up). I decided to give a separate SSID name to each of the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands (I looked up how to do this, as you can't with the iOS or Android app. Google "All connections to Velop are on the 2.4ghz band? - Linksys Community"). After that, I set up the Wi-Fi on some devices. The PlayStation 4 only recognized the 2.4 SSID, whereas my smartphones showed both of the SSIDs for the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands. I took this to mean that the PS4 can't handle 5.0, but my smartphones can. But (caveat) I know little of how Wi-Fi signals work (and how to express myself in English for that matter). Supposedly 5.0 GHz is faster, but you have to be closer to the emitter. I should also mention that our home's walls are made of cement, but my Linksys Velop nodes are like 20-25 ft from each other, and work as advertised. It's convenient that the SSID is the same for the three nodes, so one doesn't have to switch SSIDs as one roams through the house. The power cables are longer than I expected them to be. They work very nicely for me.

Great Performance, Good Price

Chaz K from Smyrna, GA on 2/9/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Prior to installing the Velop my entertainment room, separated from the main house by a courtyard, had nearly non-existent W-Fi (less than 1 Mbps). Comcast suggested leasing another of their routers and opening a second account. A local big box retailer recommended either a $2,500 Wi-Fi hotspot or a $450 Netgear Orbi System. Thankfully I found the Velop on Crutchfield and I could not be happier with the result. I purchased a pair of Velops, one plugged in to the Comcast gateway located in my main house and the other plugged in the wall in my entertainment room. The units are separated by about 50 feet and two exterior walls. I now have a steady 100+ Mbps download speed and 15+ Mbps upload speed. While these speeds are not quite as high as I get in the main house they are more than adequate for streaming movies and music as well as uploading photos. If you need a mesh router I recommend the Velop.

Pros: Easy Setup Reasonable Price Great Performance Good Warranty Adequate iPhone App

Cons: None

Tough urban problem, solved!

Dave from Washington, DC on 1/22/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I had a hard to solve Wi-Fi situation. Old brownstone w/ plaster, mesh wire lath and internal brick walls, plus an apartment building attached on one side with multiple competing wi-fi networks. I had never tried a mesh solution, but knowing how hard it would be for me to get a stable network, I read the reviews and tried to find the best. I think I found it. I have three nodes, and have great wifi on three levels, and from front to back of the home. The most difficult to reach spot (back of house transmitting thru brick walls and multiple plaster walls all along competing (and closer) wi-fi networks even has a pretty stable signal. I occasionally get a yellow warning on this outer node, but the system stays up and seems to automatically figure out how to get the signal back to blue (everything working perfectly). I know I could not have achieved these results w/o mesh wi-fi, and I suspect that a lesser mesh system would not have been able to show results this good.

Pros: Stable wi-fi in a very tough environment.

Cons: To get the best, you have to pay for the best

Welcome to the future of home wifi networking!!!!!

charles from guam on 12/5/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I wanted to see how effective a mesh wifi system would work in my home wifi network where I was utilizing the standard router standalone (Linksys AC1900). My home is a single story 2600sqft structure with all concrete cement walls and ceiling. The main node is situated next to my modem located in center of my house, and one node was placed each at the farthest points of the house from off center of house. Coverage was awesome 100% at both ends of house---no more dead spots nor half speeds due to extenders. This piece of engineering tech is AWESOME! Worth every cent I spent on purchasing it (I just couldn't pass on the Cyber Monday sale price!).

Pros: -easy set up with phone app -elegant design fits in any home -robust design factor (each node utilizes 6 antennas!) -excellent coverage

Cons: -app may need a little bit more work (via firmware update?) -power cord too short (6 feet would be perfect) -price may be a wee bit high

I purchased the Velop 3 node set for my home, Easy set up had all three nodes up and running within 10 min. like the idea of the assistance of placement of the nodes, lets you know if signal is good or not, I live in an old home 1967, lots of walls, corners 2 story home, tried other range extenders with little help but I spent a lot of time on the porch or the yard, with the Velop I have had no problems, the construction is flawless, I like not having to deal with exposed antennas, signal retention is excellent,

Pros: well constructed, easy setup, excellent signal coverage and retention

Cons: price

Amazing wifi coverage. I went from having multiple dead spots throughout my home with a cable modem/dualband router, to 100mps upload/download in every inch of my home. I love this product and would recommend it to anyone needing to get good wifi in their home. I have three floors and three kids who are always on and have experienced no slow downs since setting up the Velop system. So easy to install. Took minutes and my 10 year old set it up.

Pros: Easy install, great coverage

Very easy to setup with phone and app. Internet connections are quite strong throughout the 2500 sq ft, two story home. I did a backhaul after initial setup and it makes a huge difference in the speed. Resetting my previous router was a daily chore. I haven't had to reset the Velop once. after one month of use.

Pros: Speed, coverage, reliability, quality, ease of setup.

Cons: A bit pricey. App a little buggy but hopefully gets worked out.

This has really turned into a terrible experience. This mesh network claims coverage up to 6000 square feet, great my house is around 4000, sounds perfect. I set it up, and after moving it nodes around for a few days, and talking to Linksys tech support, it seems this product isn't powerful enough. Nodes 1 and 2 are about 25 feet apart, almost line-of-site, and connect okay. The distance between nodes 2 and 3 is about 20 feet, with a wall in between, but can never connect. I understand that walls and interference and cause issues with wireless signals, but I currently have a Netgear NighHawk (AC1900) that covers more area than these three nodes. Looks like I'll be sending this back.

Pros: Pretty simple set up. Single network name Nice app

Cons: Not very powerful App is very slow sometimes

Product Research

Features

Velop Whole Home WiFi: Velop by Linksys is a true whole-home WiFi mesh system that delivers blazing-fast WiFi using dynamic Tri-Band technology to give you 100% full-strength signal throughout your home. Velop is beautifully designed with internal antennas placed at the top for better coverage and vented on three sides for optimal cooling. Its footprint is 88% smaller than traditional routers and all connections are hidden to reduce cable clutter, so you are free to place the Velop in plain sight. And best of all, Velop is easy to setup.

Modular System: Velop immerses you in WiFi no matter what type or size of home you live in. It is modular and available in a one, two or three pack. This gives you the freedom to place additional nodes to reach difficult spots like the upstairs, basement, garage, or backyard for flawless WiFi everywhere.

Note: The Velop system is composed of nodes. The first node you will set up becomes the Parent node and you can add another node to expand your network. There can be a total of 10 nodes in a Velop WiFi mesh network.

100% WiFi Mesh Network Signal: The Velop mesh system operates as one network and continuously searches for your connected devices. This ensures a 100% seamless connection as you move throughout your home. A Velop modular WiFi mesh system gives you 100% seamless WiFi without lag or buffering. Velop gives you full-strength WiFi without signal degradation or drop-out.

Dynamic Tri-Band Technology: Featuring Dynamic Tri-band technology, Velop provides blazing fast speeds through its combination of three WiFi radios, each tuned for optimal WiFi load balancing to ensure peak WiFi performance throughout the home. Whether you're streaming 4K content, gaming, or video chatting, Velop delivers exceptionally fast WiFi to ensure optimal performance even when multiple WiFi devices are connected.

  • 2.4GHz: 2.4 GHz band with optimal speeds up 400Mbps for older Wireless-N & G devices.
  • 5GHz x 2: Two 5GHz bands with faster speeds up to 867Mbps each for newer Wireless-AC devices.

Next-Gen AC + MU-MIMO: The Linksys Velop features Next-Gen AC WiFi with MU-MIMO technology, the latest advancement towards uninterrupted, simultaneous WiFi connections. Devices such as 4K TVs, HD streaming media players, tablets, game consoles, and many more use a lot of bandwidth, and with MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) technology, the Velop sends WiFi to multiple devices at the same time and same speed. Your whole family can play, stream, and work at once, without experiencing lag or buffering--at up to 2x the speed of a non-MU-MIMO router.

Beamforming: The Linksys Velop has Beamforming technology on both 5GHz bands which helps improve the quality of voice, streaming of video and other bandwidth and latency sensitive transmissions. Direct WiFi signals to each of your mobile devices to increase signal strength and coverage. Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
I use a two mode system and want to add the third to help support my powerful home entertainment system, everything is wireless now, and that is how my components each get their software updates. [ Steve  Sep 20, 2017 ]
A
Because my router is not working right it keeps loosing connection now and then and I needed something a little stronger distance and lot faster too. I also like the tower look too. I hope these will last a long time just like my TV I bought from you about 9 years ago and still working very well. I also wanted Crutchfield help if needed to set them up. [ Matthew  Jan 28, 2019 ]

These are working as expected. [ Shane  Jul 12, 2017 ]

I chose this product due to the fact that it has a back-channel in order to communicate between units that does not disrupt the wi-fi speed on the primary channels. Also, there are three separate units that allow for up to 6,000 square feet of coverage throughout the house. This may be more than I needed but I have several dead spots in my home that make wi-fi connections extremely difficult. My hope is that this product may alleviate the dead spots so that I can maintain a reliable connection. [ Judith  Jun 26, 2017 ]

Q
Originally I bought a 2 node system(1 parent & 1 node) and it works well. However I still have one spot on the third floor of a 4500 sf house that has some issues. Can I simply buy another node for that area and set it up just as I did the other node?
[ Mark  Mar 29, 2018 ]

A
Yes, it costs about $200 and is really easy to add to set up.
[ RONALD  Mar 30, 2018 ]
A
Yes, definitely. I think they say the Velop system is expandable up to 10 total nodes.
[ Michelle  Mar 29, 2018 ]
A
Yes, as long as they're all daisy chained to the main node.

Q
Is there any advantage to hardwiring the modes?

A
Hard wire is always better and faster but I only hard wired one unit to my router/modem (food) and the nodes are on WiFi only they work great
[ Michael  Jan 13, 2018 ]
A
Hi George. I personally don't have my nodes hardwired. The nodes do an excellent job working wirelessly. They are very reliable. So if it would be hard for you to wire them I don't know if I would do that.

I have the three node system, beyond that check with Linksys about adding more.
[ DANIEL  Apr 06, 2017 ]
A
Thanks for your question. 10. The first node you will set up becomes the Parent node and you can add another node to expand your network. There can be a total of 10 nodes in a Velop WiFi mesh network. Hope this helps.

Q
How do the "nodes" communicate with each other? I currently have three WiFi modems. Can I keep using them if I get this "Velop" system? Will this system work between separate buildings? One is about fifty feet away; the other about 150 feet away.
[ Charles  Apr 02, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
The Velop modes use a proprietary mesh network to communicate with each other. You can continue to use your existing modem. The nodes offer great range and coverage but, depending on the building materials, the one that's 150 feet away may be too far. Q
Does each Velop module need to be hardwired via ethernet to the modem?
[ tim  May 03, 2017 ]
5 answers
A
Only one node needs to be hardwired.
[ sgk  May 06, 2017 ]
A
Nope. Only one module requires a connection to the modem. The others only need an electrical outlet.
[ Charles S.  May 05, 2017 ]
A
No, they all need power. Only one of them becomes your traditional router, that is the one that needs an internet connection.
[ DANIEL  May 05, 2017 ]
A
No, only the first unit.
[ Robert  May 05, 2017 ]
A
No, just the FIRST module needs to physically connected to the Ethernet cable... Any additional modules are connected wirelessly using the downloaded app on mobile phone or wireless device... Setup is simple...
