About the PSB CS500
Great sound, right where you want it
Great sound, right where you want it
The PSB CS500 outdoor speakers provide amazing sound quality even in the most challenging environments. These weather-proof speakers use high-quality drivers. The 1" titanium dome tweeter delivers crisp highs and the 5-1/4" woofer pumps out solid bass. Each CS500 has a bracket that allows horizontal or vertical mounting. Once mounted, each speaker can be swiveled to direct the sound wherever you like.
As a Canadian-based company, PSB knows as much about harsh weather as they do about high fidelity. The sturdy interior of the CS500 cabinet features extensive bracing to put a damper on vibration. All materials are tough enough to withstand temperature and moisture extremes. Other protective measures include UV resistant enclosures, rust-proof speaker terminals and rubber seals and gaskets. These speakers will provide years of music enjoyment whether you're out listening on your urban terrace, on the boat dock or just cooling off in your toddler's pool.
What I heard
PSB brought a pair of CS500s to Crutchfield for a demonstration. I noticed something different right away — the speakers were mounted diagonally. The unique bracket allows for an amazing variety of positions, which is a tremendous help when you're faced with challenging locations. My second big, positive impression came when I listened to a number of tracks played both from a hard drive and an iPod®. The music files ranged from normal CD-quality to high resolution, and the PSBs' realistic tonal quality and the fact that the cabinets had zero resonance really stood out. In fact, the CS500s reminded me of good bookshelf speakers. Not surprising since PSB modeled the CS500 after their Image B5 bookshelf speaker .

PSB CS500 reviews
I have 4 speakers outside around my pool area. 2 of the speakers are the larger CS1000. All speakers sound very good and both models have good low end and the high's sound smooth. The problem is with both models that the speakers have a seam around the outside and have a gasket to seal out the elements. I took apart the CS1000 and the insulation inside the speaker was soaking wet. One of the CS500's didn't work had water inside the cabinet . The gasket does not hold out moisture and I never took them apart until the CS500 that didn't work and the CS1000 I could hear water inside the speaker when I went to dismount the speaker for the season. The speakers are only in there 4th year for about 6 months a year of use. I do have the speakers in an open area, but for the cost they should be able to handle moisture. I do take the speakers inside for to winter and are only outside for 6 months. If you buy these speakers have them under cover and not exposed to moisture.

I purchased these speakers for our pool area and mounted them vertically on custom stands at ear level. When powered by a 50-watt amp, they produce indoor quality sound with excellent dispersion. Base response will surprise you and excellent highs as well. This was my first purchase of a PSB product and will not be my last.
Pros: Build quality, appearance, unlimited mounting options, and bass response.
